Jeff Kruse Andy RiderTom Miller Flora SperbergerLaura Oliver Adam Haydock

It was about 5:30 am when Laura Oliver

and I arr ived at the airport in Chicago tocatch a direct f l ight to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for what turned out to be one of the most in-tense adventures of my l i fe! I was thinkingabout how amazing this t r ip was going to beas we were going to go to some world classcaves, an island off of Puerto Rico, a cloudforest in the El Yunque, and an at tempt tosummit some amazing waterfal l r iver canyonsystems deep in the south distr ict of the ElYunque. What a way to kick off this 10-daythan to start with one of the best caves I haveever heard about on the very next day, Cueva

Zumbo! We got to San Juan, got the rental car ,

headed to the grocery store to get supplies, and made our way over to Pipos house in

Florida, Puerto Rico. We came to a closedroad continuing down into the jungle sur-rounded by mogote mounta ins and thick vege-tat ion, so I got out of my car and I heard Pipocal l ing my name in the background. Carloscontacted him before I showed up. Aftertalking with Pipo and Carlos over the phone,I was surprised to hear that he was wil l ing toal low us to stay in his backyard instead of us

having to drive into the jungle on the brokenup mossy road at night . Pipo and his familyoffered us drinks and ful l immersion intoPuerto Rican cul ture, which included my half -ass Spanish speaking abi l i ty, a biased Span-ish translat ion book, and hand signs. We gotlost in t ranslat ions a few t imes l ike subti t lesin a late night bravo movie special , but wewere able to understand each other about 80-85 percent of the t ime, which worked o ut f inegiven some people that speak perfect English,I understand a lot less. Pipo has inspired meto learn Spanish that much more, so nowwhen I come back next year I can make surewe can have a conversat ion and I shouldknow Spanish if I am going to be coming toany dest inat ion south of the United States.

We set up the tent and got to bed around9 pm which was l ike 7 pm Chicago centralt ime. Start ing at midnight and at a rate ofone outburst every hour, the family roosterhad to make his presence known and wake meup. I almost forgot about the chickens androosters in Puerto Rico, they are everywhere! The sun came up and we woke up in betweena horse and a rooster hen, f igures! We getready for a long day into the jungle. Pipos

family continued with this unexpected amaz-

ing hospital i ty which included breakfastsandwiches and juice. After breakfast I sawthat damn rooster standing proud and tal lnext to my tent , he turned in my direct ion

and for a second I thought there was going tobe a cock fight . I am on his t err it o ry and hekept me up al l night!!

I got over i t and spared i t from becominga chicken dinner as Carlos showed u p to greetus and get ready for Cueva Zumbo. I t had

been a ye ar s ince I saw Car lo s so it was goodto see him and f inal ly catch up on projects heis working on along with some amazingthings he had been doing to help Puerto Rico.Jeff , Jul ie, and Flora showed up short ly after ,so we jumped into Bros car (Carlos) and

headed for the t rai lhead to Zumbo. Wepassed a fe w caves a lo ng wit h way to Zu mbobut aft er about a mile on t his road we parkedour cars and headed out for an hour hikethrough the jungle to the 80-ft drop intoZumbo. We made i t to the entrance drop andit looked more l ike a cl imb down with diff i -cul t ly but we had the gear and i t was a pi t sowe set up a rope to rap down. We al l make i tdown and we could hear the water roaringthrough the passage below us. We are f i-nal ly here!!

I ts been a long t ime in the making to getto Zumbo but here we are. We proceed todrop down the breakdown pi le avoiding the

expedit ion rope as i t had core shots and ap-peared to suffer fr o m a lo t o f abu se. As weentered the cave passage, immediately we no-t iced the terrain. Jeff 's wife Katrina l ikes todescribe i t as Dr. Susse land and I have toagree with her. The rock in this cave issculpted and scal loped in a way I have neverever seen anywhere on this planet . Not evenin pictures.

The water has carved a passage that lef ttalons of perfect ly sculpted rock to cl imbover and swim around. The water dug semi-circular contours deep within the rock and

has created a geological mix between Ari-zonas Antelope slot canyon and a water park

equipped with warm condit ions and waterfal lsencapsulated in a decorat ed water cave ful l ofact ive f lowstone and formations. The pas-sages had more dynamic and defini t ion thanany passage I have ever been through inUtahs slot canyons or in any cave system.

The water i tself had about 10 f t of viz and ablue t in t to it , the temp o f the water wasaround 72-75 degrees, the air was around 75and humid, i t was a cavers del ight!!

After about 5 minutes in the passage we

popped out into a canyo n passage, an open a ir

Ha. . .Thissystem gets more impressive with each step Iam freaking taking! Unbelievable!!! As wemade our way down the passage we found ourselves f loat ing with our packs in deep water ,cl imbing over steroid induced f luted rockcarvings, and surrounded by waterfal ls , ac-t ive f lowstones, and shear enthusiasm.

I was lagging behind so I could at tempt toget some pictures of this place, which provedto be a chal lenge for me, based on the l ights Ihad, the footing the t r ipod had and just howclose the passage walls were to each other.Continuing down the canyon walls becamemore dynamic where we had to cl imb up mul-t iple levels to be able to continue into thecave. So now we were in the middle and ontop of these massive f luted stone structureswith raging water below us cut t ing circularvortexes in the rock creat ing more of thisstructure. I t s diff icul t to explain how this

cave looks so I hope these pictures can graspjust a li t t le bit o f what this p la ce really lo oksl ike.

After crossing some shady ropes and ex-posed c li mbs, we made it t o t he sump sect io nwhere i t s more of a long duck-under than asump. I peeked my head through the sumpand the cave continues on to Cueva Esclara Iknow where I am going next year!! On ourway out I at tempted to get some more pic-tures and video of this amazing place whilewe made our way back to the entrance.

We continued on to the upper level ofZumbo that connects to Cueva Yu Yu. Wewere out of the water passage, but at t imeswe could hear i t below us. The passage re-minded me more of Indiana now, except i twas in the 70s inside this cave instead of 54degrees. We cl imbed over some exposure andgot into some walking passage that took us toa breakdown room ful l of bats. Jeff pointedout where the connection to Yu Yu was sonext t ime I come back, I want to see i f wecan make a crossover t r ip with Yu Yu andZumbo. We turned around and headed out ofthe cave through the pi t .

The sun was set t ing and the jungle started

a symphony of various insects, coquis, andother unusual sounds. Final ly we make i t

back to t he car aft er cross ing paths wit h someof the biggest frogs I have ever seen hoppingaround. We get back to Pipos house to chi l lout and get ready for Day Two, Cueva Con-vento and Cueva Balcones.

We woke up on our second d ay in the jun-gle of Florida, Puerto Rico, in the backyardof the landowners property. He wanted to

jo in us and t ake us on a t r ip t o vis it CuevaBalcones and Cueva Convento, which are twocaves si tuated r ight next to the Rio Encan-

tado System. We were amazed once again as

his mother cooked us breakfast which wasrather amazing. Eggs, meat , juice, even the

bread were fa ntast ic. We a ll jump ed into ourrental car and proceeded down this nasty bro-ken-up road to the end where these caves arelocated. As I was taking the front wheel drive

Nis san up and down this mo ssy, s li ppery roadI was thinking to myself how I was going todrive this car back up this incl ine of a sl ipand sl ide, as well as how was I going to make

sure the car doesn't go into a f igure-8 spinout off the road when we go down the hi l l. Iwas thinking to myself that an off-road boo-

boo wo uld tumble us into t he ju ng le below. Iwas committed and beyond the turning point ,so I had to make the best of this t r ip and dealwith i t when we decided to get out .

After a half mile of walking we reachedthe entrances of Convento and proceed to getready for a t r ip inside this system. The en-trance was large!! The mossy f lora layereditself over the formations, which gave thiscave a monstrous look to i t . There were two

entrances from where we were and each en-trance had an exi t to the other side. We wentinto and down the f i rst entrance and the large

boreho le passages revi led it s Puer to Ric annature, massive!! There are a number ofcaves in Puerto Rico that appear to be pret tymassive and these two caves were no excep-t ion.

We made our way down the large bore-hole and into another large room fi l led withstalact i tes and stalagmites which concludedin an exi t back into the jungle. After hangingout here for a bi t we decided to turn aroundand proceed back to the entrance to ventureinto the other side of the Convento system. The entrance here was even larger and the

boreho le passage fo ll owed su it to the ma ss iv eentrance we had just walked down from. There were a few more bats in this sect ion,

but aft er walk ing around a fe w be nds , t hecave ended. There was a side passage wechecked out , which was ful l of formations, sowe got a couple pictures of that and pro-ceeded to exi t .

After we left Convento we made our wayover to Cueva Balcones. Pipo cut a B-l inetrai l through a saddle in between two

mogotes, so we could get to the cave quicker. We went through a dense fern overgrowthsect ion, so cut t ing our way through this withmachetes made the descent down the saddleeasier . We get to the entrance and t here was acrack in the wall where the entrance of thecave is .We cl imbed up into this hole and pro-ceeded through a couple rooms with smallsqueeze entrances that connected to largerrooms. I could hear crickets, so I knew wewere about break through into large cave pas-sage.

We looked to the cei l ing and we can see

large bats swarming the cei l ing air space

6 The Windy City Speleonews, March 2014 Vol. 54above us. As we walk into the large roomsthe guava scorpion let i ts presence be known

by runnin g across t he wall s and stoppin g fo rbr ie f p ic tures he re and there. These thin gsare pret ty big! The size of the scorpion isabout the length of two hands and they canrun pret ty fast too!

We continued to walk through these pas-sages to the end of the cave taking pics onthe way in and out . I t was a freakin sweat

box in t he se la rge passages ; it must ha vebeen in the 80 's wit h hig h humid it y. I wassweating my ass off just walking around inthese upper rooms.

We exited the cave and made i t back tothe car just in t ime for i t to rain! Nice, let 'sadd a l i t t le insul t to show of a r ide back tothe normal one in a half lane roads now shal lwe. . . . This was pret ty bad but i t could have

been a lo t wo rse and I have been to ld thatcars l ike mine have made i t out before so Iwas locked in commitment and started myway back up this mossy sl ip and sl ide road,

making sure we didnt rol l into a 200 -f t di tchbelo w us. We were ma kin g good st eady speedunti l I got to the incl ine. The wheels startedto spin, the car locked into ant i-sl ip mode, and I turned to put the wheels on the dir t toget more tract ion as we were now inching ourway up the road with the wheels throwingdirt .

I was making progress as the rain contin-ued to fal l making matters worse. I started tosl ide a bi t more and slowly the car breachedthe top of the hi l l making i t past the mainobstacle. Now we had to go down another h i l l

now, so I slowed down and started the de-scent down the road inching closer to theexit . With the moss, rain, and the decl ine al lworking against me, the car started to f ishtai l . Pipo took a deep breath and I could hearLauras heart skip a beat as I s tar ted to sl ide

    off the road. I turned the wheel in the oppo-si te direct ion against the sl ide a few t imesand was able to gain control of the rental caronce again as we came to the bottom of thehil l . We made i t to the exi t and as the gatew a s b e i n g u n l o c k e d I s h o u t e d o u tyeeeaaaa!! We did i t ! Im not much of a

car guy but that was pret ty good consideringthe consequences we could have been facingotherwise.

We dropped off Pipo and went to thebeach area where Cueva del Ind io is lo catedto check out the Taino petroglyphs, the seaarches, and to wash off our clothes with acoral reef snorkel swim in the o cean. What anepic day. We ended up get t ing a hotel thatnight to break up the jungle l i fe a bi t (afteral l , this is a vacat ion) and while we were si t -t ing down eat ing dinner we heard about a 6.5earthquake with an epicenter 35 miles fromus that happened hours ago. I didnt feel a

damn thing or hear anything about . This musthave happened when we were sleeping in thetent but thankfully there were no serious in-

ju r ie s, no t sunamis, o r aft ershocks when wewere inside the caves shaking breakdown intoour heads. We got rest for the fol lowing dayinto Cueva Larga and Cueva Dos Ojos.

The next morning, we left for Lares,Puerto Rico, to pursue another long day ofhiking through the jungle on a quest to get to

Cueva Dos Ojos and Cueva Larga. We meetup with Rolf , Andy, and Flora at the Wal-greens in Lares so we could gather up ourlast minute supplies and make our way overto the drop-off point for the rental car . We

p la nned to drop off t he car , h ik e to Dos Ojo sand larga, meet up with Rolf at Larga, thencontinue to hike out with Rolf to his car , andget shutt led back to our car . That was verythoughtful of Flora and Rolf to place the carsin a way that would make i t easier for al l ofus, you guys are awesome!!!!

We made i t up the hi l l and talked to the

landowners about what we were going to do.We continued down into the jungle with someindicators to where Dos Ojos was located. After about 45 minutes of mogote hiking wemade i t to the impressive entrance of DosOjos. I t was more impressive from the insidelooking out , but I real ly enjoyed this cave.Once we were able to scramble our way downto the bottom of the entrance, Flora went offto work on her project while Laura, Andy andI went in the other direct ion. We passed animpressive old f lowstone drapery covered infine popcorn textures. The cei l ing was at

least 50 f t and the passage provided break-down and huge f low stone structures to cl imbaround. Soon after we made i t to the end ofthe cave, which had some more impressiveflowstone drapery formations.

Afterwards we turned back and went theother side of the cave where Flora was work-ing. I decided to stay back near the entranceto catch some of the noon sunlight that wasshining into the cave, l ight ing up the forma-t ions. I continued back to see what Flora wasworking on and they were about to wrap upwith what they had going on so I came backout and got some more pics of what wasaround us and of everyone exi t ing the cave.We wanted to get over to Larga in good t imeso we packed up and got ready to go.

We continued to orient and re orient our-selves to get to Cueva Larga. Along the way,we passed Cueva Dugon and I was impressedwith the entrance this cave had, which wassi tuated on a wall of a large sinkhole. Nextt ime Im coming back here. After a few minor

mis-orientat ions, and a st range monkeysound, we found Rolf and the Larga entrance.

Larga had an interest ing vine-covered for-mation entrance that you walk in between the

Some of the pics didnt turn out sowell and others turned out pret ty decent

Rolf was working on some projects so Iwas able to help him document his work with

a few photos for him which I posted on Face-book. I was able to get a pic o f Rolf on t heother side of a massive breakdown pi le thatgot high carbon dioxide readings and waswarmer than where we came from. There wasa lower level where we went down into afterRolf f inished up with his work and I was

We made our exi t from the cave short lyafter going through knee high st icky mud andsl iding down a few mud hi l ls in the cave. After an educat ional speech directed by Flora

about educat ion, we proceeded out andthrough the jungle mogote landscape past thelandowners house and down to Rolfs car .

No t hat wasnt Ro lf s car but it was a car

on the side of the road. I t reminded me ofwhat our rental would have looked l ike i f wefl ipped the edge of the moss road in Florida,Puerto Rico.

After being chal lenged to a duel ofswordsmanship, we changed out of our superhero sexy caver gear into something a bi tmore int imate and proceeded to pack Rolfsouppdee to shutt le back to our car . After a

few wrong turns, direct ional f ingers from lo-cals, 1 pizza side thought , 1 landsl ide, andabout a bi l l ion winding turns in the roads, wemade i t back to our rental and said goodbyeto our fr iends. We got a good nights restfor the next day to Observatory Cave.

Last day in the hotel and we got an earlystart to Observatory Cave on the TanamaRiver. Laura and I got to the parking lot andI talked to the securi ty guard about fol lowingthe trai l to the r iver to visi t the cave. He wasnice enough to help with a bi t more informa-t ion along with a l i t t le history on how theIndians used this historic t rai l to gathergroups together for various events. We madeour hike through the t rai l and popped out in afield and on a few roads after making a fewminor mis-orientat ions. Eventual ly we couldhear the r iver and make a B-l ine to the r iverwhere we sui t up for some waterborne act ivi-t ies. We scrambled over rocks in the r iverand swam downstream to some waterfal lswhere we jumped into the water so we couldcontinue downstream.

We noticed the cut banks where water hadrecently raged through, which created a pathfor us that made i t easier to reach the en-

trance of the cave. Soon after , I looked outto the 500-600 ft cl i ff face and noticed thecl iff start ing to surround us. That is when wenoticed the entrance to the cave.

I t was l ike a 6-lane highway going intothis massive entrance. This is one of thosecaves that remind me of some caves that Ihave read about in Asia, maybe a bi t smaller

but t his one was the big gest cave I have eve rbeen through. We kept go in g deeper in to the

cave al lowing the ambient sunlight to l ightour way as we crossed over t he r iver mental lynoting of the colors on the wall . Beautiful .

We noticed hundreds of bats f lying at thetop of the cei l ing which was amazing to see

but t he sme ll o f the fr esh guano and the fa ctthat we got shat on mult iple t imes rang myhistoplasmosis bel l , so we kept moving andstayed in the water where i t didnt smell so

bad. We could see t he exit fr om the ent rancebut it took us 45 min utes ju st to get to theother side of the cave. The water got deeperso we started swimming in this r iver noticing

the high cei l ing and the act ive f lowstonespour in g water around us. As we got clo ser tothe exi t , there were waterfal ls to the side ofus which made this place look l ike a fantasyland Absolutely breathtaking!!

When we exited the cave, we got to a l i t -t le rock bank where there was another smallcave to swim through with waterfal ls pouringover the entrance!! This place did not evenseem real , I t was l ike a place out of themovie Lord of the Rings . The small cave hadthese waterfal ls pouring over and f lowstonearound i t so we start ing swimming through

and we found the r iver blocked by logs thatpreve nted us fr o m cont inu in g through. I at-tempted to clear the logs but we decided toturn around and cl imb over the wall throughthe jungle and come out the other side. Afterscal ing the wall , we walked down a path thatseemed to be where other people walked toavoid that log jam. We were able to walkdown a spring that was blast ing water whichwas f lowing over to the other side of thissmall cave system.

I was so impressed with this place and Ithink this is my new al l t ime fav cave. Justan incredible place and worth the t r ip in i t -self . Soon after , we decided to turn back sowe could get to the El Yunque Jungle on theother side of the mountain and make sure west i l l had some sunlight left to get dinner andset up the tent .

The original entrance was just an amazingsight to see, and I wil l never forget how wellthe sunlight was able to i l luminate a good

port io n o f t he ent rance. We took one la stgood look into the cave before heading outinto the upstream river and making the cl imb

back out to t he park in g lo t . We also got achance to see what the locals cal l El Radar,

Vol. 54 The Windy City Speleonews, March 2014 9 years previous I have traveled up the Rio Sa-

p ip el ine t rail, and this t ime I wanted to sum-mit the Rio Prieto from the pipel ine t rai l aswell as descend down the Rio Sabana to theconfluence of the Sabana/Cubuy rivers andascend up the Rio Cubuy to old PR 191. Thiscascade hike was no joke! We got dropped

off at the end of the road on old PR 191 andwalked to the t rai lhead where the Rio Sabanaand PR 191 meet . We fol lowed the pipel inetrai l al l the way to the junct ion of the RioPrieto and the pipel ine t rai l which included a40-ft waterfal l and a old ladder that we hadto cl imb up to reach the top of this f i rst wa-terfal l . We make i t around the rusty lockjawinfested ladder and cl imbed up the shady lad-der to the top where we could see the mainwaterfal l . This waterfal l can be seen from theroad and was one of the biggest waterfal ls Ihave seen in Puerto Rico.

Eventual ly we made i t to the last port ionof the fal ls and was able to scramble overthat careful ly so we didn't t ake a sl iding tum-

ble over 100 ft to t he fa l ls belo w. I usednatural anchors and meat anchored myself tosafely get us to the top of the Rio Prieto. I treal ly doesn't look l ike we did much but i t bi toff a chunk of our day working up this cas-cade to the r im while making sure we werenot breaking any legs and running into anyflash f loods. People have died on this routeand other routes due to exposure by r immingthemselves or using poor judgement so we

made sure we were careful and we did i t .Final ly we made i t to the Rio Cubuy Sa-bana conf lu ence and took a swim in the r iverpoo l belo w. Aft erwards, we decided t o ascendthe Rio Cubuy back to the road so we couldwalk back to our car and head to t he hotel forthe last night in Puerto Rico. We scrambledand bouldered over rock unti l . . . .

What the hel l is this thing doing here?!?who put this massive mult i -drop waterfal l inthe way? I have never seen or heard anythingabout this thing! What a surprise it was forus. We continued on and slowly made ourascent by cl imbing up the boulders in the cas-cades scrambling our way to the top. Final lywe made i t to the top!! Nice view and whatan amazing waterfal l to come out of . Thatwas an epic end to our most amazing tr ip ofamazing caves, cascades, desert islands, ocean swims, amazing fr iends, great people, earthquakes, cul ts , weird animals, and just anamazing t ime. My best t ime in Puerto Ricoever. I want to thank the landowners, ourfr iends, and al l the great memories we hadexperienced on this t r ip. I t wil l never be for-gotten and I am looking forward to coming

We grabbed some dinner on ourway to the El Yunque, but r ight about thet ime we got to the jungle, darkness set t led in,so set t ing up the tent and hiking up the 200-ft

p ie ce o f mo unta in to get to t he r id ge was ju sta bi t more interest ing, but the morning views

from the r idge are amazing. So in the middle of the night I heard

something running around the tent . We werehundreds of feet up on a r idge and I hadnever seen any dogs or cats roaming aroundfrom the neighborhood below where we werecamping. So there was something runningaround and al l of a sudden i t ran r ight intothe tent and into my foot! I jumped up andgrabbed my knife! What the hel l was

that!?! I t wasn't a hard punch into the tent

but it was ve ry myst er io us to say the le ast . Itmight have been a mongoose or an iguana,

but I am ju st sure, and it ma y never be kno wnwhat i t real ly was.

We woke up early so we could go getferry boat t ickets to Culebra a day early andget to the north distr ict for a hike. I wantedto check out the La Coca trai l which is sup-

pose to be a bit mo re rust ic wit h waterfa l ls ,and the only t rai l I hadnt been on. We get tothe t rai lhead and I not iced a lot of broken carwindow glass on the ground which was not agood look for me so we decided to summitthe mountain via the El Yunque Trai l whichtook us to the cloud forest .

We started up the gravel t rai l which madeit a hel l of a lot easier to hike up rather thanbushwhacking and s lo gg in g our way throughp la nt debr is and mu d. We not ic ed t heweather change as i t got a bi t cooler and thetrees started to shrink and get smaller .

Eventual ly, we made our summit to thetop of the El Yunque trai l and the cloudsstarted to rol l in with a hard drizzle of rainthat fol lowed. As we were at the top, I wasthinking about how we were in a massive wa-ter cave with previous world class caves be-fore that , and now we are on top of a cloudforest mountain. This real ly put Puerto Ricointo perspect ive for me as to how this islandhas so much diversi ty in ter ms of biology andgeology. I love this island!!

We made our descent back to the car en-jo yin g t he hike and watchin g t he change inweather with the plants around us. Earl ier inthe day we got our t ickets to go to Culebrafor a couple days so we were r eal ly exci ted to

be changin g it up a bit and enjo yin g some Rand R in a remote and beautiful desert island.

cumstances. The dried-out rot ten dolomitepassage we fo und ourselves in mig ht be anancient passage as the f loor showed signs ofsand and si l t deposi t , leading me to bel ieve astream was present here at one point .

We took a break here while some peoplewent to the end of the passage in one direc-t ion to see what was around the St . LouisLimestone corner. Once everyone came back,we continued down into the formation room. This room had some very interest ing art i -facts. There were hel igmites and hel ict i tes onshelves over our heads along with another

interest ing feature that st i l l has been ponder-ing what i t is exact ly. Right before ourselveswas a column of sorts that appeared to be re-connected. Furthermore two shelfstone ta-

bles on t he fo rma t io n belo w, might show evi-dence where an old waterl ine used to be. Theformation was something I had never seen

befo re and piq ued my interest to underst andhow this was actual ly formed.

We continued down to the 45-ft domesthat were next to each other and made i t tothe other end of the upper passage. We tookanother break and short ly after that , we pro-

ceeded into the Maze and into the MazeDome Room, where the passage got interest-ing. There was a dome to cl imb into that hada hole in the ground leading to another dome. This dome took me to a cl imb where I had anoption to go in three different direct ions. Iwent in a direct ion that led back around intoa cl imb connection that was near the old up-

per passage, which a lso connect ed to thelower stream passage. After some small ex-

posure cli mbin g around the p it s we came to adome where we could continue to cl imb upinto the top level passage. This was l ike afreakin playground for cavers!!! I t remindedme of the passages in Ell isons cave but a bi tsmaller . I continued on to where I came to aslot canyon. This slot canyon had clear water

but super-fine mu d, and I could only imagin ehow long this water must have been si t t inghere.

Once we got through the slot canyon Icame back around to get everyone else andwe al l proceeded through the slot canyon tothe Waterfal l Dome Room. The water pas-sage was a lot of fun, the maze was a play-ground, the slot was well defined and sharp-ened, but the Waterfal l Dome Room was the

After looking at the weather reports a fewtimes and watching people back out of thistr ip, we decided to keep our plans and godown to Indiana for a weekend of coldweather caving fun and one hel l of a drive

erty where we would f ind the entrance toTrapper Cave tucked under a small bluff aquarter of a mile behind the landowners

proper ty. This cave appears to have a coupleentrances but only one seemed to be accessi-

back problems, so he and Zelda returned tothe hotel . We worked our way down thesmall breakdown pi le and into the water pas-sage where we proceeded to crawl 150 f t to a

p la ce where we cou ld stand up and get ourbear ings.

The stream passage was a sol id lookingtunnel with gravel and sand for a bottom. This was a bi t different than the t radi t ionalmud-banked bottom passage that we have

After preparing the almighty Honda ac-cord for a 1200-mile round tr ip to TAG,Brian Hunsaker, Laura Sangaila, Noboru Sa-

night t r ip to Alabama. We drove through

the night and got to Huntsvi l le around 6 amFriday morning. Kevin Romanak and Just inThompson were wait ing in the t ruck for us atthe Kennamer Preserve in Alabama. Whensunlight broke through we loaded up Kevins

car and drove his 4x4 to the t rai lhead pre-serve. The Honda would have got stuck inthe thick muddy road if the at tempt had beenmade to t raverse the road, so we put every-thing we needed in Kevins t ruck and pre-

pared fo r a lo ng and co ld day in the melt ingAlabama snow.We hiked up the mountain to Secret Pi t .

This is a 140-ft drop with no passage at thebottom. We r ig ged and bo unc ed this cavewith no issues. I t was a nice starter pi t andat 140 f t , i t was a nice drop to get ready forthe larger TAG drops we were about to go to.

After we de-rigged, we spl i t up andstarted to head for the Orgy Entrance toKennamer Cave, which is where Kenna Pit islocated. The Orgy Entrance is the entrancewe were supposed to come out of for the thrutr ip in Kennamer cave, but we were not ableto f ind it or able to find Kenna Pit , so wehiked up to the waterfal l entrance and dugentrance to see where we should enter thecave system. After a few mis-orientat ions,mis-communicat ions, and some cold chi l lsthinking about the waterfal l entrance, every-one decided to go into the dug entrance.

Laura decided to stay back and head tothe car , so the rest of us e ntered the t iny holein the ground where we had to crawl throughcold water to get to a waterfal l room. Thiswaterfal l room had a 35-ft sheer drop r ightnext to an exposed crawl that we had to t rav-

erse around. This brought us to a 45-50 de-gree mud slope that took us to the lowerstream passage. We down-cl imbed this sec-t ion and got to a room with a series of domeroom connections with waterfal ls rainingdown into small pools.

We started our at tempt to make t his a thrutr ip to the Orgy Entrance. We had the mapand noticed where we were ini t ial ly but asthis cave would show later on in this t r ip, weshould have been paying at tent ion to the map.We walked through a large room unti l we getto the Moby Dick Room which is a massive

bould er t hat is blo cking t he passage ahead ofus. My camera and I were not get t ing alongtoo well in this humid cave, so the pics I gotinside this cave system did not turn out aswell as I wanted them to. The cave is a lotmore beautiful than these pictures show.

This boulder was a couple stories highand i ts weight must have been in theTONS!!! . .HUGE, so huge i t took us 20 min-utes to squeeze through a lower r iver passage

via breathing in to f i t through the squeezepassage t o get back int o walk ing passage. We got to the other side and the domesseemed to get bigger above our heads. Someof these domes reached almost 120 f t up. I twas pret ty amazing to see the design aboveus that has been eroded away by water andother effects. We continued on and come toa down-cl imb where we had to chimney downand go through a series of rain dome roomswith chert levels, st rat i f ied rock, and mineral

jo ints which are a lw ays ama zing to see. Wegot to another dome room, and the passage

started to turn into a hands and knees crawl. We continued down through a small handsand knees passage and passed by formationand flowstone rooms unti l we eventual lycame up to the 40-50 f t drop.

We looked down and couldnt f igure out

how to get down ini t ial ly. We backtracked, checked al l the side passages, checked themap, but nothing appeared to make sense. Iviewed the drop and i t appeared to bel l outunderneath us, so I couldnt imagine how

someone would have down cl imbed this pi t . Icontinued to look around but I didnt see

anything that looked l ike a way to cl imbdown. We were al l t i red but we must havemissed something. We backtracked and tr iedto retrace our steps but after a few at tempts,we decided to exi t and go out of the cave theway we came in.

I t was a defeat , as we wanted to make thethrough tr ip and we are pret ty good at navi-gat ion and survey, but not tonight . Defeataccepted. We got out of the cave pret tyquick so that tel ls me that we mis-orientedthe distance on the map and there must have

been a way down. We were drenche d and itwas in the low 40s by the t ime we got out sowe kept moving unti l we got to the car . I twas a nice feel ing to know that we got a mo-tel at the Liberty Inn for a night so we coulddry everything off and stretch out in a warm

p la ce, t ake a shower, and rela x. We got tothe Honda and in a daze, we made i t to themotel and crashed for the night .

Itook the Honda real ly slow and steady downthis road so I can make sure nothing wouldget damaged mechanical ly, as we needed toget back to Chicago in this thing. The roadwasnt too bad; I was able to get down to the

t rai lhead road where the 4x4 road begins. This 4x4 road was a different story. Therewere t imes where the muddy road would be

on a 30-40 degree slope going straight up the

mountain! The ground was sl ippery, and themud was deep. We loaded up Kevins t ruck

and proceeded to blast uphil l avoiding trou-ble some depress io ns and qu ic k ly ma ke it to abench wit h everyo ne e it her ins id e or ho ld ingto the side of the car outside. Kevin at-tempted to go up another long stretch of road

but the t ruck kept spinnin g it s wheels so hejust s lo wly brought t he t ruck down to t hebench.

We ended up parking the t ruck at thebench and proceeded to hik e up t he rest o fthe mountain to the f i rst cave locat ion, Holi-

day Hole. This was a nice li t t le open-air en-trance with a 105-ft drop into a l ight rainstorm at the bottom. We enjoyed bouncingthis one as i t was not too deep and a goodwarm-up for what was coming. Laura wasable to dial in her rack and was now able togl ide and control the rack with ease, nicework!! After the f irst three people got backup to the top, they agreed to r ig 67-DollarPit , while we came up, de-riged this pi t andmet them over at 67-Dollar Pi t .

We de-rigged this pi t and got on the radioto see i f they were able to f ind the entrance

to 67-Dollar Pi t . They couldnt f ind it sothey went to r ig Mandys Pi t . We went on asearch and found that the waypoints were offa few hundred feet but we were able to locatethe pit entrance. 67-Dollar Pit was an 80-ft

p it wit h a sma ll ent rance and ju st a dropdown into a small room at the bottom. I t wasnice to bounce this pi t , so we left the r iggingin place so the others co uld bounce i t too. Wehiked back uphil l to the road to go to the f i -nal cave on the mountain, Mandys Pi t .

This one is a 170-ft with a small 10-ftdrop to get to the main entrance. We cookedup some lunch while the others came up fromthe drop. They went over to 67-Dollar Pi tand we proceeded to get on rope and dropdown this huge gapping room!!! This wasreal ly nice!! There was this r inging sound wecould hear at the top that gave an eerie yetmysterious sound that echoed inside thisroom. I got on rope and proceeded to de-scend down to the bottom. As I descendeddown, I could see a small waterfal l drippingrapidly on a chert level that is creat ing thisr inging sound. I thought that was so interest-ing as i t sounded l ike a man made instrumentleft for a waterfal l to r ing. I get to the bot-

tom and i t was a pret ty good series of water-fal ls creat ing a rain storm at the bottom alongwith another waterfal l that was going pret tygood. There was cave passage but we de-cided not to go through i t as we wanted tosave some of our t ime for the other locat ionswe were going to be going to. Brian As-cended the pi t and we made i t out of thecave, wet , and into the cold Alabama winterair as the sun was start ing to set . We de-

rigged and hiked back to the car so we canquickly get over to Dog Collar Pi t beforenightfal l .

We parked our cars on the side o f the roadand hiked up to the entrance of Dog CollarPit . This was another 105-ft . drop with a

beaut ifu l act iv e flo wstone water fa ll a t t helast 50 f t . We al l real ly enjoyed dropping thistoo, but i t was t ime for some horizontal large

boreho le passage, Blu ff Riv er Cave. This cave was a great ending to a wonder-

ful day of caving!!! We traversed across ariver stream and fol low i t to the entrance of

Bluff River Cave. After a small crawl, thiscave opened up into a large borehole passage.

NICE!!!! We were all rea l ly impressed wit hthis cave as i t was not only a nice walking

passage cave but it was nice to t ake a st ro llthrough a warm cave system without ropesand extra gear. I was not able to get the best

p ic tures inside Blu ff Riv er Cave, but I wasable to get a couple decent shots of the pas-sage. I highly recommend this cave if youare looking for a nice walking large boreholecave with large rooms.

This reminded me of a smaller typical

Puerto Rico cave in terms of the humidityand the size with fewer formations. BUT thiscave had a lot of formations in sect ions, large

breakdown mo untains over 100 ft high, andcei l ings 30-40 f t with a width of 20-30 f t att imes. We got to the end of the cave systemand decided to turn back and head back outand to the car so we could get back to themotel . I t was a nice addit ion to be able tostay in the motel and i t made a lot of sensefor us, especial ly since we were wet andcold!!

We al l got up a l i t t le later , as the t r ip thenight before went north of 15 hours of sol idcaving. We woke up sore and in need of

breakfast so we fir ed up our st oves and gotready for a classical place, one of my favor-i te places, Stephens Gap! We make i t to thetrai lhead and there were people get t ing readyto drop the gap even before we got there. Weall shared our ropes so everyone was able toget on rope to d rop down to the bottom of thewaterfal l and onto the platform with threeoptions to choose from. People can also walkout of this cave so if you don't feel l ike as-cending (which I do not recommend), i t is anoption.

14 The Windy City Speleonews, March 2014 Vol. 54Kevin was the f i rst to drop down into the

fal ls . After about 10 minutes, he ran up andsaid to me the waterfal l was raging at the

bottom and gave me this lo ok as if I was sureI wanted to go down there. ON ROPE! Isaid as I had been wait ing to get down to the

bottom of t his hurr ic ane waterfa ll Ke y LimeCove madness room for a long t ime!!

I get over the edge and looked at the wa-terfal ls raging away below me. As I de-

scended down, I could start to feel the watervapor turn into water drops than into rainwhich quickly turned into sol id rain. I wasabout 20 f t from the ground and the waterwas hammering down on me l ike a f i rehose att imes! The pressure of the water and the di-rect ion the wind that was created from thewater in this circular col lect ion pi t was l ike ahurricane. I t was awesome!!!

I cl imbed back out on rope and pendu-lumed across to another rope and onto the

p la t fo rm so I could stay down. Laura and Ichecked out the side passages around

Stephens Gap. They didnt go too far , butsome of the rooms had some pret ty interest-ing canyon waterfal l drops. One room had araging waterfal l coming from a passage 20 f tabove us. We came back out and I proceededto go to the top of the passage and check outthe main resurgence. To my surprise, therewas more cave at the top, so I worked myway through and around some bends unti l i tgot to a point where there were a few smallholes too small for me to f it through. Iwanted to see i f there were any dive opportu-ni t ies, but these holes were too small for me

to f i t through. I wouldnt be able to f itthrough even with a no-mount configurat ion.I came back down and checked on every-

one else so see what they wanted to do. Wedecided to de-rig the ropes and make ourheading towards our last cave, Moses Tomb.Kevin and Just in had to leave for Indiana sowe exchanged our goodbyes and we went ourseparate direct ions. After about an hours

worth of driving, we arrived at the propertythat had a beautiful val ley surrounded bymountains. We parked the car and started our

jo urney to Mo ses To mb. We got to t he busand I checked my cords, I t appeared the cavewasnt that far and if we were to make a B -l ine to the cave we should be there short ly.

This decision turned out to be a pret t y badone as the terrain drast ical ly changed to thickdead branches, thorny vines that grabbed atyour clothing with each step you made, and adisorient ing feel ing of wondering which di-rect ion to go. Thankfully it was st i l l l ightout and we were going up, yet we had tochoose which dead bush we should dodgearound first to get to the next foot step.Something must have come through thismountain wiping out everything in i ts path.

I t appears that a tornado came through since

there was man-made debris laying around themountain. After inching our way closer towhat appeared to be the longest 1/4 mile hikein Alabama, we got to a small r idge and l ine

po int ing t he way. Here we were, well no treal ly. Now we could not find the cave. Thecords did not bring us to the entrance!! Wecontinued to look around and turned up noth-ing, so I made the decision to go down therocky wash as i t was a bi t easier to t raverse

and hopeful ly we would f ind a t rai l leadingus to the cave or back out . Once we got downto a confluence we found another wash thatled us r ight to the cave entrance.

Man that was one hel l of f ind!!! The nextchal lenge was to r ig and trust a pair of deadtrees that would hold us in place so we coulddrop this 230-ft pi t . We rigged a tensionlessanchor to a fal len tree and backed i t up toanother t ree. Feel ing moderately comfortablewith the r igging, we made the decision todrop and pad our way down to the bottom ofthe pit . There was no cave passage down

here, so we quickly ascended and got out inreasonable t ime. As I was ascending myCroll was start ing to sl ip, and on a 230-ftcl imb, this is not the place for these issues tocome up. Regardless, I made sure I set theteeth in each t ime I made a revolut ion andeventual ly I got to the top. We de-rigged andstarted our descent down to the val ley below.

We got about halfway whacking throughthe bush and fol lowing yel low tape along therock wash only to real ize that I did not havemy GPS unit!!! AAGGHHH!! I wasnt happy

about that at al l , and I dec ided to continue on

without i t as I didnt want to keep everyonewait ing. I am hoping the next group that vis-i ts the cave wil l return i t to me. We started toquest ion our route but r iver (wet or dry) al-ways lead to people and leads into the val leywhere we wanted to be, but we couldnt see

anything ahead of us except for more deadtrees. We turned our l ights off to identifythe terrain and the r idge around us which wasa bi t of help so we continued to fol low thewash. Eventual ly we came up on the old busthat we passed when we made our hike up themountain so we knew we were on the homestretch into the val ley and back to the car!!!i t was a great feel ing to get back to the carand reflect on what an amazing TAG trip wehad let alone what an adventure i t was just toget to the f inal drop at Moses Tomb.

I want to thank Kevin Romanak, Just inThompson, Noboru Sakabe, Laura Sangaila, and Brian Hunsaker for the team work, greatmemories, and one hel l of a t r ip we had to-gether!! I t was a blast and one I wil l neverforget . The next morning we went to the Lib-erty Caf to sign the cave log and start our

jo urney back to Chic ago .

10 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

If you look closely, you may notice a subtlechange in the appearance of the Speleonews .

Not ic e in part ic u lar the table o f cont ents andthe Trip Reports header. Beginning with thisissue, I am now using Microsoft Publisher to

format and lay out the newslet ter . Blocks oftext are contained within text boxes, whichcan be l inked, moved or placed anywhere inthe document. Each item, ranging from shortf i l lers, to recurring things such as the meet-ing notice, to major art icles and tr ip reports,is in a text box or group of l inked text boxes. The cover photo was scanned into a JPEG fi leand then imported into a picture frame.

And I st i l l remember the days when cutt ingand past ing was a low-tech operat ion, usingscissors to cut blocks of text on paper, and

rubber cement to paste onto a layout over al ight table. (Apri l 2004)

20 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

Last January record low temperatures and icestorms caused an unprecedented rockfal l inMammoth Cave that destroyed one of i ts most

popula r art if act d is p la ys. A 100 -ton rockslab, which fel l in the Rotunda area about800 feet from the Historic Entrance, thecaves largest natural entrance, is considered

the most signif icant geological occurrence atthe cave since i t opened to tourists in 1861.

The slab, which fel l about 40 feet from thecei l ing of the Rotunda, was about 70 feetlong, 20 feet wide and one foot thick. Parkofficials and geologists say that heavy windsapparently sent extremely cold air well be-yond the cave entrance, due to the fact thatthe natural entrance was widened to accom-modate a new entrance gate. Frozen moisturewithin the l imestone formations caused theslab to pry loose. (Apri l 1994)
