Use: For use with Unit 21.
Players: 2 or more, a caller
You need: a chalkboard and chalk
How to play: The caller draws on the board a shark, a five-rung ladderover it, and the correct number of line spaces for a Unit 21 Basic Word. Theobject of the game is for players to guess which word the caller has chosenand spell it correctly. Follow these directions.
• The caller chooses a player to go first. Player 1 guesses the letters of theword in the correct order. Each time he or she guesses an incorrect letter,the caller erases a rung from the ladder.
• If Player 1, or another player, wants to guess the word, he or she must cor-rectly fill in the missing letters to complete the word.
• If all five rungs are erased before the word is guessed correctly, Player 1 is“shark bait.” Player 1 then becomes the caller.
Play continues until all the Basic Words from Unit 21 have been used.

Spanish In Spanish, the /k/ sound is spelled with c (when followed by a, o,or u) and qu. The /kw/ sound is spelled cu + a vowel, as in cuerpo (“body”).
Activity List the Basic Words with the /k/ sounds. Write the columnheadings k, c, and ck on the board. Say each word and underline the spellingpattern for /k/. Call on students to write each word in the correct column.Then write the Basic Words with /kw/ on the board. Say each one. Havestudents repeat each word as a volunteer circles the qu spelling pattern.
Asian In Hmong and Vietnamese, /k/ is not spelled with k, c, or ck.
Activity Write k, c, and ck on the board. Explain that these letters make thesound /k/. Add shark, check, flake, crack, and sink to the board. Call onstudents to point to the letter or letters that make the /k/ sound in eachword.
