Spelling techniques

• There are many ways of learning how to spell new words and make sure they are spelt correctly in your finished work.

• Here we are going to cover a few techniques to help you achieve this.

• Are there any techniques you use that you can think of?

Page 7: SPELLING Techniques

Break the word into syllables

• Break the word into syllables:• Split up complicated words into syllables and

concentrate on spelling one syllable at a time.

• What is a syl - la - ble?

• Syllables are chunks of sound.

• One way to understand what syllables are is to think of a song, like "Happy Birthday".Each syllable is a different beat in the song, i.e:

"Hap - py  Birth - day  to  you“.

Exercise 1

• Exercise 1: word jigsaw. Match the word cards up by joining up the syllables to make up a word.

Make up your own technique (mnemonics)

• Mnemonics, simply, is something intended to assist the memory, as a verse or rhyme.

• Because – big elephants can’t always use small exits.

Page 10: SPELLING Techniques

• Exercise 2: Can you think of one for diarrhoea? In groups write it down and compare. Remember, the more ridiculous the better!

• Write the word down, then think of a new word that begins with each letter. Try to get your words to make a sentence.

Learn a spelling rule

• ‘I’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’ whenever it rhymes with ‘me’. This helps you to spell words like ‘niece’ and ‘ceiling’.

• When you add ‘full’ to the end of a word, use one ‘I’ – this helps you to spell words like ‘helpful’ and ‘useful’.

Page 14: SPELLING Techniques

Exercise 4

• One person from each group to write on the board:

• A) ceiling

• B) believe

• C) mindful

• D) deceitful

Prefixes and suffixes

• One of the most effective ways of constructing new words is to find common letter patterns which can be added to the beginning or the end of a word.

Page 16: SPELLING Techniques

Root words

• Faithful, faithfully, unfaithful, unfaithfully.

• What do the letters in bold have in common?

• A root word is a word that has nothing added at the beginning or the end. It stands on its own as a word, it has a meaning. New words can be made from root words by adding beginnings and endings.

Page 17: SPELLING Techniques

Prefix

• A prefix is a group of letters which you can add to the beginning of a root word to change the meaning of the word.

• What is an example of a prefix?

• E.g. mis (prefix) + fortune (root) = misfortune

Page 18: SPELLING Techniques

What one prefix can you put at the front of all 3 of these words?

• Interest

• Appear

• Trust

• Disinterest

• Distrust

Suffix

• E.g. walking, helpful.

• The most common are 'ed' and 'ing'.
