O ur 35th Anniversary year was agreat success, and nowhere moreso than in the media where we

have enjoyed significant exposure andfantastic support from many differentoutlets including the BBC, ITV and theBristol Post. We will now be workinghard to capitalise on this, as it is a vitalpart of communicating what we do to allparts of the community and thusimproving our accessibility.

As I write this, the ground is being preparedfor the new garden room at Brentry, anexciting development funded by a grant fromthe Department of Health. This project servesas a physical symbol of the progress we aremaking. It is principally designed to benefitthe numerous patients, carers and familieswho use the therapeutic services of thePsycho Social Spiritual (PSS) Team. This newbuilding will provide a much betterenvironment for the PSS team to work in andwill in turn free up space elsewhere. Thusoverall it will enable us to increase access toour services. But I hope it will also be usedmuch more widely, and possibly allow us toengage more with other community groups.

The building itself is being created by localtradesmen, craftsmen and professionals. Ofnote is Westwind Oak who crafted thetimber frame; they overcame schedulingdifficulties to ensure they made the framein their local workshops because theywanted to forge the local link with whatthey see as an important project. Ittranspired when I went to see them thatone of their craftsmen had been visiting arelative in St Peter’s only days before, indicative of the extent to which St Peter’stouches so many people.

So this is a building built by the communityfor the community. l

Simon Caraffi – Chief Executive

Leave a Gift in your Will today…make a difference tomorrow

4

W e rely so much on thefantastic generosity of peopleleaving us gifts in their Wills.

Each year, we receive nearly a quarterof all of our income in this way. It’s agreat way to support the Hospice in thefuture especially if you are unable tomake a donation now.

Of course, we want everyone to look afterfamily and loved ones first – but it may bepossible to consider a gift to the Hospice, too. Many people don’t realise that themajority of their estate (their worth) can beleft to their family with a small minority leftto the Hospice. For example, you could leave99% to your family and 1% to the Hospice.

Over the past year or so, we have receivedwonderful gifts left to us in Wills. Many are

legacies

for set amounts of £1,000, £5,000 or£10,000 whilst some are a percentage ofthe estate 15% or 25% – and sometimeseven 100%.

One gentleman left us his miniature traincollection which has been auctioned andraised £20,000 for the Hospice. Anothersupporter left us her car along with a cashsum and one lady kindly left us her houseand all the contents.

Through these and other generous gifts, wewill raise more than £1.5 million this year –enough to run the whole Hospice for nearlythree months.

If you would like to talk to someone aboutleaving a gift to the Hospice in your Willplease phone Jo Gibbons 01275 391406. l

We have received a variety of Gifts in Willsincluding a miniature train set.

FOCUS ON Dave Smith, Spiritual Care Coordinator

I t’s an honour to be part of people’slives at such a crucial time,” says Dave Smith, Spiritual Care

Coordinator. “End of life is often a timeto explore faith issues. It can bedaunting and confusing so I see myrole as helping people through this.”

With a background in social work, Davejoined the Hospice last year in the newlycreated role which is part of the Hospice’sPsycho Social Spiritual team. He is licensedas a lay minister in the Church of Englandalthough he sees the role of Spiritual CareCoordinator as broadening out the spiritualwork of the Hospice to develop a moremulti-faith approach.

It is a varied role that can involve sayingmorning prayers with patients in the DayHospice, sitting with patients or families inInpatient Unit or saying prayers for thedying. Dave may be asked to conductoccasional funerals and he helped lead ourLight Up a Life services at Christmas.

“You meet every variation in people’sresponse to faith. Some people run to faith, seeking comfort in it, whilst others runaway. Spiritual care is for both extremesand everything in between.”

Dave is keen to take a human, compassionate and practical approach tohis work.

“Many patients and families I meet simplyneed comfort, time and space. I’m definitelynot here to evangelise; instead, I try tosense where people are on their spiritualjourney and meet them there.”

As well as providing support for patientsand their loved ones, Dave also offers alistening ear to Hospice staff.

“There is a lot of laughter at the Hospice, but it’s also a place where people feel atease about talking on a deeper level. I’vehad many meaningful conversations thathave lasted only a few minutes,” he says.

Looking to the future, Dave would like tobuild better links with other faith groupsand to increase the number of volunteersinvolved in spiritual care. He would also liketo develop the use of the Sanctuary atBrentry as a sacred and reflective space.

“I hope and pray that thespiritual life of the Hospice willgrow and for it never to lose itshuman touch.” l

As well as starting a course of chemotherapyat Southmead, we started having visits fromone of the St Peter’s Hospice CommunityNurse Specialists. She was wonderful andreally helped us to deal with and understandthe situation.

Maggie attended a 12-week course at the DayHospice in April 2012 to help her manage thesymptoms of her illness. True to form, one dayshe decided to liven things up by organising aconga around the Hospice reception!

Over the next year, Maggie’s healthdeteriorated and she went into the InpatientUnit in March 2013. Despite our expectations, the environment at the Hospice gave us botha lift and Maggie felt very at home there. Ourbeloved dog, Seren, was allowed to visit andsit in Maggie’s lap as she went around theHospice in her wheelchair.

Maggie died peacefully at the Hospice on 14 April 2013. The care she had received wastremendous and the nurses seemed to haveso much time for her. I really wanted to givesomething back so I got in touch with theFundraising Team at the Hospice whosuggested that I set up a Tribute Fund inMaggie’s name. Every time one of her friends

Bob Danaher makes atribute to his wifeMaggie

M y wife Maggie was diagnosed with brain andlung cancer in late 2011, after we’d returnedfrom a cruise to Israel. It was such a terrible

shock for us both. Maggie was such a fun person, fullof life; she was always organising nights out for herfriends, and had a keen eye for interior design and alove of travel.

or family does any fundraising, we tell StPeter’s Hospice that it’s in memory of Maggieand the money raised goes into her fund. Sofar, we’ve raised £5,400 through all sorts ofactivities and people are very forthcomingwhen we mention St Peter’s Hospice. Forexample, two friends raised almost £600 bydoing The Midnight Walk last year, Maggie’shairdresser is donating all her tips and I’veraised money through table top sales and myfootball refereeing. Her friends are planning todo The Midnight Walk again this year and I’vedecided to help marshal the event. It wouldbe fantastic to reach £6,000 or more for sucha great cause – but we’ll just see how it goes.

We all miss Maggie so much but the TributeFund has given us a focus and is a great wayto keep Maggie’s memory alive. l

Big YellowStorageWe’re very grateful to Big YellowStorage which has donated a 200square foot storage space at theirWinterstoke Road site.

One of the main reasons for movingour fundraising office last summerwas to save money but this meansthat our new site is very tight onspace. The storage space at BigYellow is fantastic because we canuse it to store the fundraisingmaterials that we only need atcertain times of the year. It has alsoprovided a new home for our muchloved Lenny the Hospice Bear.

Lee Smith, Manager of Big Yellowsays, “We’re always happy to tryand support a local cause and weknow how much St Peter’s Hospicemeans to the people of Bristol. Wehope that we can save them moneyso that more funds go directly topatient care.”

W e’ve had some fantastic support from local businesses for our St Peter’sHospice 100 Club, with over 50

companies joining in 2013.

The Club was formed to enable businesses in the Bristol communityto join together and collectively raise £100,000 for patient care.

We have been thrilled with the diverse and innovative ways that100 Club members have sought to raise funds for us. Many havefocused their fundraising on their business expertise – here are afew examples:

l Arch House Deli in Clifton is holding Cheese and Wine Eveningswith £10 of the ticket price being donated to St Peter’s Hospice.(Bookings can be for groups of 14 – 20 people, please mentionSt Peter’s Hospice at the time of booking).

l Try4 Fun, an adventure and corporate activity company based inPortishead, is running sponsored cliff abseiling to help raisefunds for the Hospice (St Peter’s Hospice must be mentionedwhen booking).

l Cossey Produce is donating £1 for every fruit and vegetable boxordered using the SPH code (please contact us for more details).

l Four teams from ITEC took part in the September 2013 DragonBoat Race and raised over £8,000.

We’re still working hard to reach our target of 100 members so if youwork for or own a local business, please do get in touch – we’d love todiscuss ways of working together. We also hope to run somenetworking events in the future so that members can meet each other.

Local Lotto success

When Local Lotto launched on 28 August 2009 wehad just over 1,400 members. Now four and ahalf years later we have 5,000 people playing

each week. After costs and prizes, the Local Lotto is raisingan amazing profit of over £13,000 per month. This is allthanks to you!

I’m now leaving the Hospice to move to Scotland but I’ll still bekeeping a close eye on the Local Lotto in 2014. I can’t wait to

see it reach 6,000 members!

Why don’t you sign up? It’s a great way tosupport a fabulous cause and have a weeklychance to win £1,000 at the same time.

Christmas RaffleWe received the best response ever to ourChristmas Raffle in December – withalmost £60,000 raised through ticket sales.

LIzzie Cornell from Patchway won the firstprize of £5,000. She said, “This couldn’tcome at a better time of year. I’m going touse the money to treat my family and then go on holiday, possibly to Brazil for my 30th birthday”.

Many thanks to everyone who bought tickets or sold them on our behalf. We’reespecially grateful to Richard Meyer who wrote about his daughter’s experiencesat the Hospice in the letter that went out with raffle tickets – we know it inspiredmany people to take part.
