Collections inspired by the beauty of nature...

Rich and Complex Hot PatinaOur talented team of patina artists use various techniques to give the solid brass sculpture color and texture.

The hot patina technique is a finishing method for metal sculptures that results in a rich, deep, complex finish. High end bronze sculptures found in the finest art museums and galleries are typically created using the hot patina technique.

With this method, patina artists first apply a cold, chemical patina on the sculpture to form a foundation for the hot patina layers. The artist then uses a blow torch to heat the metal sculpture to upwards of 250 degrees. While the metal is hot, proprietary formulas are applied using different techniques to achieve the desired color and unique effects such as marbling.

The artists continue to heat and apply formulations section by section, one layer at a time. Many layers and several hours later, the piece is covered in stunning colors. A special compound and several coats of protective lacquer are also applied.

Lastly, the piece is hand waxed with several layers of a proprietary metal wax that results in a deep, transparent finish with intricate subtleties that no other finishing method can emulate. A single piece can take days to finish.

Lost Wax and Sand Casting

The lost wax casting process, also known as Investment Casting, is a complex technique that has been used for thousands of years. Metal objects that require fine detail and intricacy, such as fine jewelry, are cast using this method. Because of its low yield, time consuming nature, and high cost, the lost wax casting method is a fading art form. However, SPI Gallery is proud to use this technique in our fine art sculptures.

Sand casting is a process whereby molten metal is poured into sand molds to produce typically larger metal parts. Molten metal is poured into a cavity formed out of fine grain sand.

A single sculpture is typically made of several sand and lost wax cast pieces carefully welded together to form an SPI Gallery original.

How We Work

SPI Gallery is a team of talented 2-D artists, sculptors, and craftsmen, inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us and dedicated to expressing that beauty in extraordinary sculptures.

Each SPI Gallery original begins life as 2-D concept art designed by our team of talented artists in Northern California. Our master sculptors breathe life into the artwork with up to weeks of hand sculpting in modeling clay in our own atelier.

Each part is cast in our own foundry using either the lost wax or sand casting method. Artisans take the various cast parts and carefully weld them together. After up to several days of welding, sanding, and polishing, the metal sculpture takes its final form and the patina artists then have their turn.

hot patinaEach piece in our Patina Collection starts its life as a clay sculpture, and is then cast in brass using the lost wax technique (the same method used in casting fine jewelry) for unparalleled dimensional detail. The sculpture is then meticulously hand finished using our proprietary hot patina finishes.

Our patina artists heat the brass surface with blow torches and apply secret formulations of chemicals that react to the metal using various techniques, one layer at a time. Several coats of hand waxing result in a vibrant, deep, layered finish with complex subtleties that no other finishing method can achieve. Due to this hand finishing process no two sculptures are the same. Each piece is unique with its own colors.

This is the original SPI Gallery finish. Tried and true, for decades. This traditional museum look appears as though the sealife are swimming below the surface of the ocean. Reflections and contrasts appear and are accented by small brass highlights. Some of the pieces have larger brass highlights giving them an almost retro style.

Many of the sculptures are mounted to a green or black marble base to complete the package. Your Gallery customers will want at least one of these in their collection, probably more. Perfect for that yacht… or any home.

Not just a table but truly a handmade work of art.

SPI Gallery tables are all brass with tempered glass tops, some with marble bases. Many parts of these tables are cast in the “lost wax” technique with the balance being sand-cast. After casting all tables are welded by hand into their final shape and then finely polished into the structure you see before you. Finishing is in either a hot or cold patina.

All SPI Gallery sculptures will last for several lifetimes and can be protected by re-applying a thin coating of carnauba wax every year or two. Future generations will be in awe of the craftsmanship of our time and will be captivated by the mystery and color of the sea. Enjoy...
