President’s Word
It is a big honour for me as I write this first annual report of our SPIE Chapter, University Of Delhi at Acharya
Narendra Dev College regarding the activities which were held by the student members during the first year of
its institution.
It has been a good journey so far as the president of the ANDC SPIE Chapter. In the beginning, students did not
have much knowledge about SPIE. We started off with a small group of eleven with each of us very
enthusiastically involved in this chapter. We started our term by designing promotion poster so that we could
inform about the chapter not only to our peers in the college but also to other undergraduate, postgraduate as
well as research scholars of University of Delhi. We also installed an exclusive Chapter bulletin board, which
we thought was the easiest way to keep the students updated about our upcoming events as well as on
developments in optics and photonics.
ACTIVITIES HELD
A workshop on DIGITAL HOLOGRAPHY was held on Feb 15-16 2011, students showed keen interest for
attending this workshop. Over 40 students took part in this workshop and made it a great success. Invited talks
were given by eminent Professors like Prof. Kehar Singh and Dr Joby Joseph from IIT Delhi. Also, we had
hands on sessions under Dr. Sanjay Singh, an industry expert in holography. During the sessions, students learnt
the basics required for recording and viewing the holograms. It is worth mentioning here that all the student
groups were able to record and view the holograms in their first attempt. Students were very ecstatic after the
session. During the workshop, we also visited IIT Delhi for more demonstrations on Digital Holography. After
the workshop got over, many students showed great interest for joining our SPIE Chapter. Our small group of
nine has now become a big family of nineteen members. Surely the increment in the number of student
members is a first step forward towards the promotion of Optics and Photonics.
ACHEIVEMENTS BY OUR STUDENT MEMBERS
Kanika Sandhu presented paper in the conference COE 2011, which was jointly organized by the SPIE
CHAPTER, JIS College of Engineering and University of Calcutta. Kanika presented the paper on
“Measurement of Planck’s constant using Radiation Law”.
4
Another paper was presented by Purnima on the topic “CCD based Diffraction Studies” in the
conference COE 2011, jointly organized by the SPIE CHAPTER, JIS College of Engineering and
University of Calcutta.
It was a great exposure for the fellow colleagues and also an inspiration to the juniors.
Pratik Chakravarty, Vice President, ANDC SPIE student chapter will be attending the Conference SPIE
Optics + Photonics 2011, during August 20 – 25, 2011 in San Diego, CA, USA on an officer travel
grant provided by SPIE. He is going to present a paper on “Laser Based Studies in Geometrical Optics at
School Level”.
I would like to thank our faculty advisor Dr. Amit Garg without whom the ANDC SPIE CHAPTER wouldn’t
have been possible. He has been a great motivator and also a supporter. He believes in giving the students
opportunities so that they get maximum exposure to do hands-on research at the Undergraduate level.

WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL HOLOGRAPHY
University of Delhi at Acharya Narendra Dev College SPIE student chapter was inaugurated on 15
th February
2011 by Prof. K.N. Tripathi, Ex-vice chancellor Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University,Agra. On this occasion, he
unveiled the SPIE student chapter poster and complimented the college on being first to have such a chapter in
University of Delhi and wished the chapter a great success. A two day workshop on Digital Holography was
also organized from 15 -16 February 2011 with Dr. Amit Garg as the convener. The workshop was attended by
36 students. Eminent speakers like Prof. Kehar Singh and Joby Joseph delivered their invited talks on
holography. Hands-on sessions were conducted both in the college and at department of Physics, IIT, Delhi
where students successfully recorded the holograms for the very first time. The students enthusiastically
participated in the workshop and learnt the art of holography.

Promotional Poster
Our chapter kick started by designing a poster for the chapter promotion. It was a joint effort by the student
members and our advisors. Our college is the only college in University of Delhi which is affiliated with SPIE.
So it was our first promotional step. The official poster was inaugurated by Prof. K.N.Tripathi, Ex-vice
chancellor Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Agra, during the digital holography workshop which was held from
15-16 Feb 2011.
21
Establishment of SPIE student Corner in the college
After promoting our SPIE chapter among the other colleges of Delhi University, it was very important for us to
promote the chapter among our college mates. The best way of doing that was to establish a separate bulletin
board for the chapter. It is placed in the main hub of the college where it is easily visible to every student as
well as visitor to the college. We named it as the “SPIE CORNER”. All important notices, chapter
achievements and developments related to Optics and Photonics are put up there. This move has been important
for us to make our chapter inter disciplinary.
22
23
Promotion of Optics at School Level (Social Outreach Programme)
Our Team consisting of a group of undergraduate students started off the demonstrations on the basic light
behaviour with an initiation of group discussion among students. The team discussed many common light
phenomena such as reflection, refraction; eye defects with a complete scientific proof through an experimental
approach. Also, students were given a chance to do the experiments hands-on. This approach excited the
students towards the subject and invoked query based learning rather than mugging up of the concepts. The
students came into the interactive mode during the demonstrations.

Council Meetings
We held Council meetings almost every alternate Mondays to discuss and plan various chapter activities. We
also held a number of full chapter meetings to make the students aware of the activities of the chapter and to
involve them in participation and organization of the activities. During these meetings we charted out the
various goals of the chapter.
Planned Activities for the Future- 2011-12
We have outlined a number of objectives during our chapter meetings. The objectives awaiting completion are
listed below:
We will be continuing our outreach programme of promoting optics at school level using the hands-on-
approach as well as to hold a workshop.
We have decided to design a low cost optical fiber kit for the outreach activity.
We will be holding elections for the various officer posts, as the present batch will be passing out soon.
We have planned to establish a SPIE chapter official website in the coming year.
We have also planned to organize a conference in collaboration with other SPIE chapters in Delhi.
We have planned to organize a two day workshop in Optics.
Promotional material for distribution to other colleges and departments in University of Delhi.
