SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION : (3rd MARCH 2017)
The Post Graduate and Research Department of Physics celebrated Science day on 3rd
March 2017 at Mar Clemis Hall. Dr. Mathew P Joseph, Principal gave the Principal’s
remark in the meeting. The function was presided over by the Head in charge of the
department, Dr. Dhanya I. The rank holders of UG and PG streams and other students
of the depart ment who excelled in academic activities were honoured in this function.
Dr. Raveendran (Former Principal, S.N. College, Varkala) gave a talk on ‘Personality
development and Career guidance for Science students’.
PROF: N G KUNJACHEN MEMORIAL LECTURE SERIES ON
“QUANTUM MECHANICS” (27th October 2017)
Quantum mechanics, the science of the microscopic world, was the greatest
development in science witnessed by the last century. This fascinating field has
always puzzled the common man thanks to its novel concepts which contradicts
with the ‘common sense’ of the layman. Even the students of Physics many a
times find quantum mechanics a difficult subject. This have prompted the Post
graduate and Reseaerch Department of Physics in collaboration with International
Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) Bellingham, USA, to organize a lecture
series on Quantum mechanics –‘Quantum Realm’. Inauguration of the same and
the first lecture was conducted on 27.10.2017.
The lecture series was inaugurated by the resource person, Dr. Moncy V John :-
Visiting Professor, SPAP, MG University. Topic for the first lecture was
‘Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics’. The technical session had the
participation from both teachers and students of Chemistry and Physics
departments. The technical session led by Dr. Moncy V John elaborated on the
basic concepts of Quantum Mechanics. An interactive session was provided
after the session for clarification of doubts in the topics discussed.
ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE “PYTHON”
(9th November 2017)
In the present technology driven world, machines are slowly but steadily getting
more important than humans. This is the reason for the development of the
whole lot of computer languages which are nothing but the communication
bridge between the man and the machine. In order keep up with these
developments in the technological world, Post graduate and Research
Department of Physics in collaboration with International Society for Optics and
Photonics (SPIE) Bellingham, USA, organized a one-day workshop on the
programming language ‘Python’. Resource person of this workshop was
Dr. Kiran Mathew - Faculty of Physics, Catholicate College
During the lecture session, Dr. Kiran Mathew emphasized on the need for free
softwares like LINUX and PYTHON. According to him, open source softwares like
these are going to be critical for the future technological advancements. The
lecture session was followed by a practise session for the participants of the
workshop. In the practise session, PYTHON language programmes were written
to solve simple problems relevant to Physicists. An interactive session was also
provided after this session for the clarification of doubts.
