There are lots of misconceptions out there about college, but you’re not falling for them! Match the Myth with the Bust.

1. It’s tough to get into college.

A. Nationally, on average, students will usually have only $2,500 - $3,500 per year in loans. And because college grads earn more than high school grads, the investment pays off.

2. Colleges don’t care what I do on social media.

B. On average, a college degree is worth a cool $55,700 a year in earnings. Non-college grads rake in a much lower amount: $33,800 yearly. You do the math.

3. I’ll be paying off student loans forever. C. Financial aid is for everyone. No matter who you are or where you come from, there’s likely a scholarship, grant and/or loan waiting for you.

4. College is too far from home. D. Colleges want to recruit you, not reject you! In fact, only 65 colleges nationwide reject more applicants than they accept.

5. You have to be a superstar athlete to get financial aid.

E. Portland area features more than 15 community colleges, 2-year colleges and 4-year colleges.

6. Applying for financial aid is too hard! F. Applying for aid isn’t difficult. There are counselors at high schools and colleges to help you with the process.

7. A college degree isn’t worth the time. G. Some colleges really do check your social media streams for anything deemed “inappropriate.” Clean your streams before applying!

College Week: Myth Busting Monday

Monday is the launching pad for College Week. Discuss and bust other myths you’ve heard about college with your teacher and fellow students.

There are numerous excuses students come up with as to why they think they can’t go to college. They think it’s too far away. It’s too expensive. They’re ready to make money now. None of these are good enough reasons not to attend college. That’s what College Myth Busting is all about.
