A) I won’t go into my yearly spiel about how not only is the two weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl too long, but so is the four and a half hour pregame show. Instead, there’s this: Halftime takes too long. Twenty minutes (a la the sup- posed college national champion- ship) is too long. Thirty minutes makes me want to climb into the TV and break Pete Townsend’s gui- tar for him. I like The Who. I’d love to see them in concert (despite the fact that there are only two of the original band left- but I’d like to see Paul and Ringo team up again, too). Stretching out the halftime show to accommodate a scaled- back “Greatest Hits” performance that featured mostly songs used as themes for CBS shows was beyond annoying. (And the same can be said for Springsteen last year and Prince the year before- two other artists I really dig- the half-time show is too long.) Then again, the Super Bowl stopped being about the game years ago. I think it was around the time Fox started using those “whooshy” graphics. 2) The Colts lost momentum (and, really, the game) on the play in the second quarter where a wide open receiver (Pierre Garcon, I think) flat out dropped a pass into his chest that would’ve resulted in at least a 20 yard gain- perhaps even a TD. The Saints sealed the game with their on-side kick to start the sec- ond half. Despite the Colts’ briefly retaking the lead, the game was pretty much over with that play. C) Once again, terrible offici- ating. I know, I know- the idea during “big games” is to “let them play.” That’s great. Except I saw (and both teams were guilty) blocks to the back, late hits, pass interference that wasn’t called and so much holding I thought I was watching ballroom dancing. And just to remind you- I only saw about 15 minutes’ worth of action. 4) Commercial time (for me) is when I check what else is on, go to the kitchen and get some more building material for my ever- expanding hindquarters, use the bathroom, check on the laundry, read. In short- pretty much any- thing but watch the commercials. This is true whether it’s the Super Bowl or regular football. Or base- ball. Hockey. “24”. Whatever. I love my TV. I grew up with it. A good bit of the time, though, it’s just background noise for me. Either the TV or music is almost always on for me- whether I’m reading, writing (which explains some of my rambles, I suppose) or whatever. So, I see my fair share of commercials. More times than not- I just don’t pay attention to them- because I just don’t care. In fact, let me restate that: I don’t freaking care about the commercials. E) If I say “well, I didn’t real- ly watch much of the game- and didn’t really care who won” to you, would you really see that as an in- vitation to launch into a 20 minute conversation about the plays that were good/bad and what commer- cials you like? I’m pretty sure, if you’re reading this, you have a small inkling of my personality- and realize that my re- sponse would indicate that I wasn’t interested in such a conversation. Too bad the mental midgets I see four days a week don’t have such acumen… Shelby got home Sunday night just in time to see the halftime show. She said she watched the second half and was glad the Saints won (I’m not). She also said I was crabby when she got home. A six week sinus headache, broken washing machine with water all over the laundry room floor, and delivery idiots will do that. Cryptic, eh? Stay tuned… One reason I don’t like the Saints is how freaking obnoxious their fans seem to be. I mean, I used to get aggravated with one of my old bosses who was an LSU grad (and native Louisianan) because of his occasional utterance of the “who dat?” phrase (my response was usually “a Cajun moron who can’t pronounce English properly”- he always thought that was funny. What can I say? I am a jerk, but I don’t kid myself into thinking you guys read this for my sunny per- sonality.) Anyway, another example of the obnoxiousness- I’m working my regular Saturday night gig (using a desktop- not nearly as portable as a laptop- which, by the way, is sit- ting on the kitchen table, still not working due to its beer intake) and I had my usual group (minus one or two folks), including one girl- described by Bobbi (the waitress) as a “huge football fan.” She’s a very polite girl (in fact, if you remember from late last year the story of the Drunk Girl whose sister kept saying “it‘s my sister‘s birthday, isn‘t she the best?”- this is the sister)- but tonight, she‘d taken over her sibling‘s role as Drunk Girl. And she kept screaming “WHO DAT SAY GONNA BEAT THEM SAINTS?!?” over and over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. Seriously. Bobbi (the waitress) came over and said “I love those kids” (the group is probably mid- 20’s, tops) “but I’m going to kill her if she doesn’t shut up!” (You would’ve thought that I would’ve been the one to say that first, wouldn’t you?) Of course, that euphoria will last until maybe the second game of next season, when the Saints get their butts handed to them. Seriously- it’s the curse of the NFC South- win it one year, and the next you’re one of the worst ___________________________________ Continued on page B3 • Charity Bass Boat Raffle... After several days on the road, I’m glad to be home for a few days. I’ve recently visited outdoorsmen in Ohio, Alabama, Georgia, and Wisconsin, and have yet to feel out of place in any location. We all may have a little different accent, but we all love to pursue wild animals and fish. In Wisconsin I took my first snowmobile ride and my first trip across the lake in a truck. I still prefer boats, but my guide assured me the ice would be thick enough to manage the insignificant weight of our pickup. It was very worth-while to experience these new ways of enjoying the outdoors. Even though I enjoy my trav-els, I still love the place that I call home. My little piece of the coun-try has its own special character-istics, but that’s not the reason I call it home. It’s not home because what is there, but because who is there. When each of us thinks of home, we are ultimately remind-

ed of our family and our closest friends. And even though I really like sleeping in my own bed ver-sus all of those hotel beds; what really gives me a peaceful sleep is knowing that I am lying with one that has been my partner for thirty years this month. When the preacher joined us together, he tied a knot that has slipped a few times, but has never come undone. He reminded us that sometimes love and commitment will work hand in hand and other times each will stand on its own. He was right. He admonished us to fight clean and fair, to strive to not hurt one another with our words, and to never use the “D” word. We have tried to do these things as well even though my wife reminds me that he never said anything about the “M” word – Murder. All in all, home will never be a place; it will always be a person. That doesn’t mean that I don’t want the conveniences of my own house, I like them as well. But it simply

means that no matter how many surveys I fill out concerning my recent stay at a certain hotel, they will never get the highest score un-less I’m sharing one of their rooms with my wife.

North Georgia senior left-hand-ed pitcher Chris Rearick has been named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week announced this afternoon by the league of-fice. Rearick picks up the award af-ter his first start in a North Georgia uniform and his first appearance at the NCAA Division II level after transferring from Berry College for his senior season. In the Saints’ season opener last Friday evening, senior left-handed pitcher Chris Rearick stole the show in his North Georgia de-but, tossing eight innings and al-lowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out seven Fal-con batters. He held Pfeiffer to just a .143 batting average against him, while allowing just one extra base hit in his eight complete innings of work. Rearick picked up his first victory for the Saints after posting a 9-2 record last season for the Vi-

kings. Chris Rearick is a native of Pooler, and played his high school ball at Savannah Christian.

By C. Edward Wilson Groves make GHSA Coaches Poll at No. 6 Winning, like love, has a way of curing a lot of ills. Just ask the New Orleans Saints football fans. For the Groves boy’s basket-ball team, all those years of frus-tration came to a screeching halt with the conclusion of the regu-lar season at hand. Now the time comes for one of the best teams in the state of Georgia to launch its second season with only one mission on tap … to win it all and bring a state championship back to Savannah, as the pairings for

the upcoming sub region tourna-ment is now set. Groves is the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with a perfect record in Class-AAAAA with a 12-0 record. The Rebels moved up to No. 6 in this week’s Coaches Poll and played Beach High on Tuesday night at the “Gold Mine.” Another team that could ben-efit from its last two games of the regular season is Richmond Hill. The Wildcats are tied with Liberty County in its region and will play the Panthers on Friday night on the road. The last time the two played, the game went into overtime before Richmond Hill pulled it out, 45-43. This time, the game will be played over in Hinesville as both teams try to jockey for a second-place seeding in the upcoming Georgia High School Association tournament. Saturday night’s game against Washington County may be even bigger than Fri-day night’s game. Washington County holds a 9-1 record in the region standings and has been seeded as the No. 1 team in the

Coaches Poll for most of the sea-son. Barring a letdown after Fri-day night’s contest, the Wildcats could be in a position to win af-ter losing earlier in the season to the Golden Hawks out of Sander-sville. Girl’s basketball The Savannah Christian girl’s basketball team has lost three games this season to cross-town rival Calvary Day School. Both teams will be getting top seeded positions in the upcoming tour-nament, but eventually those two teams will possibly meet again for the fourth time this season down the road. The Lady Cavaliers are ranked No. 2 in the state, while the Lady Red Raiders come in as the No. 10 team in the Coaches Poll. The new Trail Adventures guid-ed walks at Fort Pulaski National Monument will start Wednesday morning, March 10th, at 10:00 AM and will be held on Wednes-day’s each week selecting a differ-ent trail. Volunteer Linda Kennard along with park staff will conduct walks to observe the beautiful na-ture and coastal views of the park. The trails are marked and maps will be provided. This will be a great opportunity to explore the park and ecosystems and natural history of Fort Pulaski National Monument. “There’s no better way to ex-plore the natural beauty of Cock-spur Island than to walk, hike or cycle along the paths and trails or kayak the water ways for an amaz-ing outdoor adventure,” said Su-perintendent Randy Wester. “En-joy over 5,000 acres of beautiful natural resources and wilderness.” Anyone can take part in the Trail Adventures and all partici-

pants are asked to wear appropri-ate clothing and footwear. We also ask that you bring binoculars, in-sect repellent and water. After the guided tour, participants are en-couraged to explore other park fea-tures including the visitor center, the fort and picnic area. Visitors can also pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it at the park’s pavilion. Dogs on leash are welcome and visitors are encouraged to bring cameras. If you enjoy a challenge, like to hike for wellness, enjoy nature, want to learn new things, or ex-plore history, then Trail Adventures is for you! Don’t look for an aero-bic workout. The pace on a natural history walk is very slow, with lots of stops to look at and to learn to-gether. Wednesday, April 7th has been designated Walking Day by the American Heart Association. Join us for our once a year Earth Day Walk on Wednesday, April 21st. This provides a good lead in to the next day, Earth Day April 22, 2010. Come and enjoy nature with us! Fort Pulaski National Monu-ment is on U.S. Hwy 80, 15 miles east of Savannah. An entrance fee of $3 per person is charged; ages 15 and under are free.

teams in the league…

And then there was this woman sitting at the end of the bar while I was setting up Saturday night. She had a male acquaintance with her (I’m hesitant to say date or boy-friend). I wasn’t really eavesdrop-ping (or, frankly, even paying at-tention to them) but I couldn’t help but notice the woman was doing everything except saying “I’d like to sleep with you.“ It was pretty funny, really. You know, in that pa-thetic sort of way…

I got a notice that my laptop is on the way- as of Tuesday at 5:10 PM. I got the notice Tuesday morning at 7:21 AM. It shipped from Shang-hai. I love how the International Date Line messes with my head…

Speaking of ordering stuff- my new laptop won’t have an S-Video connection. Not a big deal- S-Vid-eo is not the ideal hookup. Except,

for me, it is. I use an older model flat panel (not Hi-Def) that doesn’t have an HDMI input (the standard video connection on new laptops). So, I started looking around for adaptors- hoping not to have to spend the bucks on a 50’ HDMI cable, or use my nice (though small) bedroom TV for my gigs. I found what I was looking for at online computer parts mega-store Tiger Direct. It was in stock. It was $39.99 (about $60 cheaper than the model that Radio Shack car-ried). It would be here in about three days. That was last Monday. As of this morning (Tuesday- eight days later), the item was in Jackson, Mississippi. That’s right- something that started out in Il-linois (700 or so miles from here) is still two states (and 400 miles) away. I’d been following the shipment on UPS’ online site. It was received in Doraville (a scant ten minutes from where I sit right now) on the second. I figured there’d be a pack-age for me when I got home that afternoon. I figured there’d be a package for

me when I got home Wednesday. Then Thursday. By Friday, I check the UPS site again, and it said my package is finally out for delivery- in Aus-tin, Texas! Talk about your “what the???” moments. I called Tiger Direct. They could offer no help- since it was a ship-ping issue- and gave me UPS’ num-ber. UPS’ attitude, from the very start, seemed to be along the lines of “mistakes happen- you’ll get it when you get it.” They had abso-lutely zero interest in correcting their mistake. I called Tiger Direct back to complain. After all, they are UPS’ customer. And not a small time customer, either. The guy I spoke to offered to refund my money for shipping, but that was about it. I asked about having another one sent to me via next day delivery (I was counting on using the thing Saturday night, using Shelby’s new netbook). “Sorry,” he said, “we don’t do next day deliveries for Sat-urdays.” So, not only did UPS not give a

hang about where my package was, Tiger Direct didn’t seem to care about when I got it. After all, they had my money. The guy then tried to be help-ful by suggesting that there were other adapters that would work (although I don‘t know how in the ^&*% he thought I‘d be able to get one from them without driv-ing to Illinois)- including the one I already knew about that Radio Shack sells (which I didn’t get be-cause besides the a) cheaper price from Tiger, there was 2) a simpler hookup). I really, really try not to take out my frustrations on people I talk to on the phone. Unless they’re the owner of the company (and be honest- how often do you get to talk to the owner of the company in a case like this?), they’re stuck doing their jobs. It’s not personal. I realize that. So, I said “okay, thank you” and hung up. I went to Radio Shack Saturday morning (another adventure) and bought their adapter. It cost more (suckage) and required an extra hookup (more suckage)- but there

wasn’t someone telling me I’d get it when it got here- and they just didn’t really care just when that would be. Irrational, perhaps, of me to hold the seller responsible for a huge er-ror on UPS’ part, but- since Tiger Direct wasn’t going to do anything to help- I wouldn’t have much faith about buying anything from them again. Which is a shame, ‘cause they have some really cool nerd toys… Well- quite the rambling this week, huh? Guess you’ll have to tune in next time for the “water on the laundry room floor story.” Something to look forward to. I’ll be back next time with more news, notes, and rumors from all around. And maybe even some sports, too. As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322

BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray:

Recently, there was a large re-call of Toyotas because the gas ped-al could get stuck on the floor mat and cause the car to keep accelerat-ing wildly. Yesterday the pedal got stuck in my 2008 Honda Accord. What should you do if such a thing happens? -- Dan

RAY: Well, whether the gas pedal sticks because of the floor mat or because of any other reason, the first thing you do is hope that you’re wearing your brown pants.

TOM: We’ve talked about this be-fore, Dan, but it’s worth repeating -- not only because of the Toyota recall, but because this can happen on any car.

RAY: Right. Floor mats can get bunched up near the pedals. Peo-ple can install thicker, aftermarket floor mats, or those thick, rubber winter mats. Or the pedal can get obstructed by something that you drag into your car, like a chunk of ice or snow, or a kid’s toy or juice box that rolled onto the floor.

TOM: So what do you do? No mat-ter why the gas pedal is sticking, first, put the car in neutral.

RAY: Why? Shifting into neutral disconnects the engine from the wheels. So no matter how fast the engine is revving, the car will sim-ply slow down.

TOM: By putting the transmission in neutral rather than turning the engine off with the key, you also keep your power steering, power brakes, ABS and lots of other stuff working.

RAY: And, most importantly, you keep the steering wheel lock from engaging. If that happens, you’ll need two pairs of brown pants.

TOM: Some people worry that the

engine will rev so high that it’ll blow. But that won’t happen. Mod-ern cars all have rev limiters that cut off the fuel supply if the engine tries to rev beyond the limit set by the manufacturer. So the engine may sound like it’s screaming, but just ignore that.

RAY: Once you’re in neutral, calm-ly coast to a safe stop by the side of the road, and THEN turn off the ignition. Then, if you see that the pedal is clearly stuck on the floor mat, you can throw those floor mats out the window and keep driving. If not, call a tow truck, have the car towed to the dealer and tell them to call you when they’re absolutely certain they’ve figured it out.

THE PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IF GAS PEDAL STICKS

Pontiac owners and fans howled in dismay when General Motors recently dropped their fa-vorite make. No more Pontiacs! An outrage! “Tar and feather the bums who did this!”

Pontiac had been one of the most popular cars of all in the flashy 1960s, when bigger was better, and following the dazzling debut of the 1959 Pontiac with its big, broad wide-track styling. Pon-tiac was on a roll then, under the aggressive leadership of John De Lorean, CEO of GM’s Pontiac divi-sion at the time. With powerful V-8 engines and formidable bulk, the great Pontiac highway cruisers of the 1960s were no gas-sippers, but the comfort and sheer luxury were worth the extra fuel cost. Anyway, gas was only 25-33 cents a gallon before mid-1973, when gas short-ages and big price hikes took over.

Pontiac introduced the luxury Grand Prix two-door hardtop for 1962, and like other Pontiacs of the ‘60s, it caught on big -- nearly 64,000 of the illustrated ‘64 GPs were sold, and nearly a half-million ‘64 Pontiacs (counting the vari-ous other models and body types available).

Sadly, things changed after the 1970s, with continual downsizing and smaller engines, to compete with the popular imports. And beauties like this Grand Prix were considered old gas-guzzling “di-nosaurs,” all for the sake of econ-omy.

But this ‘64 GP is now prized by collectors, and has a market value

ranging from $880 to $22,000. ***

passenger had given her. The driv-er was cited for DUI Drugs, and the passenger was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. (Never heard of anyone getting high off Dramamine. But I’d never heard of anyone drinking Scope for a buzz either until I start-ed doing these Police Reports!)• Deputies responded to a resi-dence around 9:30am. A woman there told them she and her son were awoken by a loud noise in their front yard. They walked out-side and found a Honda Accord stuck in their front yard, with a lot of people trying to get it out. The Honda wagon was being pulled by a Ford pickup when it got stuck. The woman agreed not to press charges if the offender would sim-ply pay the $50 or so it would cost them to repair the ruts in the front yard.• A landlord told Deputies he’d rented out three buildings to a couple and had to evict them for not paying their rent. He’d called Police to see the damage they’d done, including tearing out the light pendants at one home, re-moving the light fixtures, shower head, handicap rails, the hot water heater and the ladder to the attic from another, and pulling the sink off the wall in the third unit. • I’ve seen more than this one re-port of people complaining of ha-rassing phone calls from a trucking company. Or more probably, from some psycho nutjob who works at a local trucking company. The caller makes comments about the victim’s credit, but when they call back to tell them to stop calling, nobody answers the phone. (I be-lieve I’d have to track that trucking company down and go have a face to face with the manager!)• Must be something in the Effing-ham water they’re having to buy from Savannah... another landlord contacted Deputies about a ten-ant he’d evicted for failure to pay rent. They arrived at their property to find the former tenant had lit-tered the home with dirty diapers and oyster shells, as well as cut-ting the electrical wires to the new $6000 air conditioning unit.• And another report of someone receiving the email scam from

[email protected]. This Guy-ton woman was also informed that she’d won an $800,000 lot-tery, and needed to go to her clos-est ATM and send the FBI a $200 money order to receive her win-nings.• A woman called Deputies to tell them her brother had allowed a man to borrow their van the night before, and the man hadn’t brought it back yet. That morning, she’d received a message from other family members that the van was now at a recycling center in Savannah. Before the Deputy en-tered the report in the computer, the van was recovered from the man in Rincon. (Of course, it now fits comfortably in a compact park-ing space!)• Just after 6am, Deputies were dispatched to a Faulkville conve-nience store for a reported stab-bing. They found the victim there, a man who had been stabbed in the chest with a paring knife by a woman I’m guessing was his girl-friend or soon to be ex-girlfriend. This happened after he told her he was moving out and back in with his mother. He said she stabbed him once, and he tried to sweep her feet out from under her but missed, and she stabbed him a sec-ond time. EMS arrived and advised the injuries weren’t life threat-ening. The man said his mother would take him to the hospital. (I know paring knives are small, but that’s still gotta hurt!)• Deputies were still on the phone with a man and woman about the domestic dispute they were in when their son stole their Chevy pickup. • A Clyo man alerted Deputies to the latest in telephone scams to sweep through Effingham County. This was a phone call offering to let the man make his truck loan payment over the phone, even though his truck payment wasn’t even due. (This was from the same trucking company as the other re-port under Effingham County.)• Deputies arrived at the Goshen BP where they found a very drunk Port Wentworth man. The man assured them he had a place to stay for the night, saying he could stay with his mother. The Deputy helped him to his patrol car and told him he would give him a ride. That’s when the man told him Mom was in a nursing home. The Deputy drove him all the way to Springfield to find out what he already knew... that the nursing home wasn’t going to let a drunk spend the night there. Mom tried

finding other family to come and get her boy, but his sister refused, saying they were tired of dealing with him. Since he was already in Springfield, the Deputy went ahead and took the man to jail, charged with public intoxication.• A Detective made a traffic stop on a Camry with a North Carolina license plate that returned sus-pended. As he approached the car, he quickly spotted the three little kids in the back seat not wearing a seat belt. Mom was released with her citations. Her license plate was seized and her Camry was towed.• At midnight, a Deputy was on Sandhill Road and spotted a four wheeler pulling off a side road onto the shoulder of Sandhill. The Bud Light beer box on the back of the four wheeler really caught his attention, so he made a traffic stop. The rider was pat searched, and the Deputy founda baggie of marijuana in his pants pocket. There was also a passenger on the ATV. As the Deputy got ready to pat search him, he noticed the oth-er baggie of dope on the ground beneath the four wheeler. Both men were taken to jail.• Deputies responded to a mobile home in Clyo where a man showed them the broken window on his trailer. He then explained to the Deputy that earlier, a young man in a white car had broken down in the road by his home, and man-aged to coast onto the man’s prop-erty. The man told him he couldn’t leave his car there. He said the young man mumbled something under his breath. A little while lat-er, the man found a rock had been thrown through his window. (“It’s me, it’s me, it’s Ernest T.!”)• Another counterfeit $10 bill has been turned in, this one from the same convenience store that reported the first one about a month ago. (It’s pretty bad when the counterfeiters start making phone ten dollar bills! Don’t be the last one holding it! Check your bills, all of them, before leaving any bank or business!)• At around 3am, the juvenile of-fender showed up and asked the juvenile witness to get the keys to the victim’s Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. I’m guessing that’s one of the fast imports, ‘cause the boy wrecked it within an hour. By 4:30am, he’d shown back up at the home saying he was sorry. They woke up the juvenile victim, who said he didn’t believe them and went back to sleep. About 10:30am, the victim woke up and realized he hadn’t been dreaming. The offender was brought back to the home and he admitted sliding through the in-tersection of Hodgeville and Gos-hen Road and hitting the concrete culvert. He was cited for theft by taking a vehicle, driving while un-licensed, and leaving the scene of an accident. He was turned over to his mother.• Deputies responded a little after 1pm to a Rincon area home, where the man complained that his neighbor was firing his high pow-ered rifles and large caliber hand-guns. He added that he’d been ignoring the shooting for quite a while, but it kept getting worse. The Deputy went and spoke with the neighbor, who told him he was far enough away from the other homes. The Deputy advised him that, in fact, he wasn’t far enough away, and could be arrested for violation of the county ordinance. The man agreed to not shoot around his residence anymore.
