Again, it’s only spring train- ing, but it’s nice to see the Braves merrily rolling along with the best record so far. Now, how that car- ries over to the season is always the big question. Will they right the ship this year and return to the playoffs- and even succeed? We’ll know in six months (or less, de- pending on how good or bad they start off). The pitching has looked solid so far (even Tom Glavine’s first start was a rousing success) and the bats are working- with the big- gest surprise being Jeff Francouer’s .350 average- with just one strike- out. If spring is any indication, Francouer is looking like he’s go- ing to bounce back from a dismal 2008 campaign. By the time this issue hits print, Opening Day will be just 10 days away- and that’s none too soon for me. Craig’s sitcom tandem of “Lowe and the Japanese Fella” look pret- ty good, thought Kawakami was scratched from his last start with some arm fatigue issues- a move that does not bode well for the sea- son, if he’s having them this early. Here‘s hoping that he‘s just not quite loose enough yet… Anybody besides me, who’s cu- rious why the Falcons have been pretty quiet (so far) this offseason? I kind of figured- after last year’s astounding year- that Dimitroff and company would be beating the bushes for such upgrades. Maybe they’re waiting to evaluate how their draft goes to decide what needs to address. After last year’s success, they’re entitled to a little leeway… Something that troubles me, though, is that Brian McCann has played all of three games with the team because of his commitment to Team USA and the World Baseball Classic. Sure, he’s getting games in with that, but he’s not getting to know his own team. I said it already a couple of weeks ago: the WBC is a Catch-22. You want your nation to do well- and they have to field their best players to do that. Then again, you run the risk of injury to said players a’la Chipper’s oblique strain- which could have been much, much worse. And then there’s the fact that Team USA was bounced- again. Ja- pan won the crown with a 5-2, ten inning victory over Korea Monday night… My buddy Tom came up over the weekend to watch some hock- ey and hang out. He was a happy camper at the end of the game, with his Red Wings smacking the Thrashers around pretty good. It’s always amazing to me when the visiting team’s fans outnum- bers the home team’s. I mean, the Blueland folks did their best to raise a ruckus, but there was just no drowning out Detroit’s follow- ers- nor was there any way to deny the see of red in the stands. We go to the game plenty early and got comfortable (after stop- ping to get beverages, of course). things- people watching. The guy with the blue Mohawk was partic-ularly amusing. After the game started, that’s pretty much what I’m about. Tom was, too- to an extent. Tom is a people person. I am not (I’ll pause now while those of you who know say “no kidding” or something like that). He talked Detroit hockey and football with a couple of guys who were waiting in line next to us to get in the arena. He did the same with some guys sitting around us. Then, there was the couple who came in midway through the first period. I have never understood people who come to games late- or leave early. (A couple of years ago, Mike D and I were going to catch a Braves’ game on a Wednes-day. I got the start time wrong, not remembering that Wednesday games started at 7:00 instead of 7:30. When we got to the game, I realized the error. It was probably still early in the game, but we went back home instead. There’s just something wrong- to me- about showing up late for a game. You just don’t do it. I don’t, anyway.) Anyway, this couple came in and sat down next to Tom. I didn’t real-ize until they started talking that they were both women- and one of them kept saying “I’m from Wis-consin” with this weird, honking accent. She was sitting to Tom’s immediate right and she was a

Wings’ fan, so they had that in common. As a result, they chat-ted back and forth for most of the game- much to the chagrin of “I’m from Wisconsin‘s“ girlfriend (as the euphemism goes, they “played for the other team”) who was get-ting jealous of Tom’s monopolizing the first girl’s attention. Now, to his credit, Tom recog-nized that the other girl was get-ting ticked off and quelled his end of the conversation, but “I’m from Wisconsin” was not to be denied. And it turned out she worked at the restaurant where Tom’s bud-dy (the one we’d seen before the game) is the manager. (Curse you, Walt Disney, and your “It’s A Small World”, which wouldn’t stop going through my head.) And her friend kept getting madder and madder, because she wouldn’t stop talking with Tom. I was pretty sure he was going to end up with a black eye. After the game ended with the Thrashers being schooled in the ways of hockey, Tom and I stopped at Dania’s in my building for a cou-ple of more beverages. (Dania’s, for those of you who don’t know or re-member, is the deli on the ground floor of my building. They just be-gan opening week before last for dinner and I think Shelby and I were their first- and only- custom-ers on that Friday night. I thought the day menu was good, but- holy smokes- the brick oven pizza is just awesome, as is the chicken scallopini- which I had last week.) Tom decided he’d reached his malt limit so I finished his, too. Heck,

all I had to do was make it thirty feet to the front door and ride the elevator up (the potential is there for me to spend entirely too much money in Dania’s, that’s for sure). I was happy to see a few more peo-ple in the place, too. Saturday morning I woke up and watched TV a bit until Tom came out. Despite my going to work at a ridiculous hour, I’m not much of a morning person, so we didn’t decide to do anything before 10:30 or so, when we headed over to the World Congress Center to check out the AJC’s car show. I went to this thing a couple of years ago with Mike and Julie and had a really good time look-ing around. It was no different this year- except there weren’t any up-per end models (Porsche, Lambo-rghini, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, etc), which was kind of disappoint-ing. There were some really cool concept vehicles, though, which is always fun. We spent over two hours walking around, taking pic-tures. Tom walked up to a couple of biker/rednecks sitting in a Hemi Challenger and said “license and registration, please.” I was waiting for a fight to break out, but biker-neck in the passenger laughed and asked “dew-w-w-w yew-w-w-w know-w-w-w how-w-w-w tew hotwi-i-i-re a car-r-r-r?” (you have to draw it out when you hear it in your head to get the full effect). After that, we did my standard “take the guests to RuSan’s trip” and then went back home. Tom wanted to get some pictures from

the roof before it got dark, so we went up. We were just kind of looking around and I was watching a police car go flying up the street nearby. I forgot about it for a min-ute- that is, until I hear screeching tires and a HUGE crashing noise. I looked to the north and there was a truck on the sidewalk of the north end of the park. It was upside down. It was being surrounded by police officers. With their weapons drawn. Turns out there was a stolen car, a chase, innocent bystand-ers- the works. Except the police didn’t catch the perp, who took off from of the wreckage on foot. And none of the park’s regular denizens were in the slightest bit affected. (Grumble, grumble, grumble.) Later on that night, we hit Da-nia’s again for some take out, and I was even more pleased to see about 10-15 people inside, having drinks and/or dinner. I hope they’re suc-cessful for at least as long as I live in the building! I fell asleep Saturday night around 10. When I woke up and Tom was watching SNL, I told him what channel he could find it on with the TV in the bedroom and went back to sleep- slacker that I am (hey, my hours are early to ear-ly- I can’t help it, it’s a conditioned response. Even if I stay up late, I still wake early). I guess I’m not much of a host. At least he seemed to have a good time on his mini-vacation, and I always enjoy hang-ing out with friends… Shelby says she’s creeped out by

the Comcast commercials where the people go through the animat-ed streets singing/chanting some song that Julie says is a rip off of something called “Technological” or something. The commercial doesn’t really bother me. I just think it’s stupid. Kind of like the Comcast “Slowski” commercials with the talking turtles…

Back to the WBC, have you watched any of it, or is it like World Cup soccer for you? (Yes, soccer is the most popular sport in the world. The REST of the world. Not so much here in the US)…

So far, the leading tag line re-placement for Bean Spouts’ slogan is Julie’s suggestion “Bean Spouts...Cranky, But Usually Right.” I’m waiting to see yours…

Speaking of hockey, the Thrash-ers suck, but have been playing well lately (except for the beat down by the Red Wings Friday). Maybe they’re gearing up for a “maybe next year” promotion…

That’s it for this week. I’ll be back next time with more general silliness.

As always, send your questions, praises, or gripes to [email protected], or via snail mail to: Bean Spouts c/o Spirit Newspapers P.O. Box 33 Pooler, GA 31322. God, bless America.

748-8298 The 2009 INEX RaceCeiver Legends points season started out with a bang for Pooler’s Andrew Smith at the ‘Lil Texas track at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas on Saturday, March 21st. The weekend featured a dou-ble header event to make up for a rain out the previous week. Even though Andrew did not attend the March 14th event, race officials al-lowed Andrew to “buy” his way into the makeup event. The deci-sion proved to be a detriment to the competition as Andrew - start-ing at the rear of the field - took the lead on lap 8 of the 15 lap feature and drove away from the field for the victory. In the evenings’ second feature, Andrew had a better view as he

started on the pole after winning his heat race earlier in the night. Once again, the competition had to be satisfied with watching the rear deck of the #62 as Andrew once again showed the rest of the field the way to the checkered flag. When asked about the night’s events, Andrew summed it all up by simply stating, “That car is fast!” Andrew will try and keep the momentum flowing as he makes his first visit to the Houston Mo-torsports Park on March 28th.

Andrew Smith competes regular-ly in the INEX RaceCeiver Legends Series, Pro Division. You can follow his progress at www.andrewsmithra-cing.com.

I’m only one week away from the opening of turkey season. It seems that it comes so early that I’m never ready. Alabama has been open for a week now, but other states will wait until the first or second week of April. My goal this year is to hunt more with my bow than with my gun. I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to resist the temptation when that gobbler locks up about fifty yards away. With my Winchester gun and my Federal shells, that distance is not a problem. With a bow however, that twenty pound turkey seems like a really small tar-get. I’ve killed a couple of turkeys with my bow, but more times than not they see me before I can ever get full-drawn. It seems that when three of them are looking down, four begin to look up. I’m always caught by the birds on the look-out. One year a lone gobbler came in while I was deer hunting. I hap-pened to see it as it cleared the crest of the hill, just about forty yards di-rectly in front of me. I determined not to make any moves toward my bow until I decided it had consid-ered the area safe from predator. After looking around, it started

scratching and picking. I knew that it had let its defenses down. My next move was to wait un-til it passed behind a tree. I would then get my bow ready. The next tree I would draw, and hopefully it would step into the clear just enough for me to touch the trigger on my release before it knew what was happening. The gobbler caused me to make a slight adjustment, but otherwise, the plan worked to perfection. There’s only one reason I was able to arrow this nice bird… it was alone. Had this turkey brought another one with it my odds would have decreased; a flock, my odds would have been near impossible. There is a great lesson in this turkey tale. It is in the power of numbers. It is in the power togeth-erness. It is in the power of ac-countability. I’ve noticed in my own Chris-tian life, it is much easier to do the right thing when I am not alone. It is much easier to recognize the enemy when more than one set of eyes are looking out for him. Many people are proud of their independence. Many will declare their self-sufficiency with arro-gance that some consider healthy. The wise man, however, humbly

recognizes his susceptibility when he is alone and prepares himself for these dangerous times. He also lingers as much as possible in the presence of those who fear the same predator. Together they make a strong bond and a formidable foe against the one who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy.

It is a blend of observations and experiences that have come over time from being in God’s great outdoors. We’re proud to offer this column for the outdoor sportsmen in our area.)

By C. Edward Wilson Staying power puts brown in elite class Groves High baseball Kevin Brown has been at the Westside School for more than 21 years. A graduate of Glynn Academy, Brown has been the glue which has kept not only his baseball team, but the entire sports program intact. Currently, he is the Athletic Di-rector and is actually senior A.D. in the Savannah area. Adding to all his success was the most recent win for his baseball team on Tues-day as the Rebels rallied from an early deficit to hand Coach Brown his 300th victory in his illustrious coaching career by defeating John-son High, 18-6. The Rebels improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in region 3-AAAAA play with the win, while Johnson fell to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in region play. Getting the win for the Rebels was pitcher Deklan Woolsey. His brother Dillon contributed three hits including a long home run, while driving in five runs for the victory. Down the road from Groves, another “big bang” theory was

playing out. This time it was from the bats of Savannah Christian. The Red Raiders flexed some pretty powerful muscles in the win against perennially powerful Calvary Day School. The win was especially exciting since the Cava-liers pulled off a major upset last week by defeating No.3 ranked in Class-AAA, South Effingham. Cheshire Brown picked up his third win in four outings and got run support from Chad Boaen 2-3 and Andrew Moore 1-2. Both play-ers hit home runs and Boaen drove in an additional four RBIs to lead his team to the win. The victory upped the Red Raiders overall re-cord to 9-3. The team remains un-defeated in Region 3-A play. Down the road in Statesboro, Effingham County got another brilliant pitching performance from Zach Dotson on the road as it easily defeated nemesis States-boro, 4-0. The Rebels No. 1 pitcher picked up his fourth straight win of the season against no losses. Dot-son pitched six scoreless inning and gave up a solo walk and struck out 11 enroute to the win. Dotson helped his own cause by going 1-3 with one run batted in. The No. 1 ranked team in

Class-AAAA improved to 9-0 with the win, while Statesboro dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in region play. lot of a Pooler restaurant around 8am. When he returned around 5pm, the truck was missing.• Among the items reported stolen this past week in Pooler... two cir-cuit breakers from a Whatley Street home.• Police responded to a burglary in progress call where an anonymous caller suspected that a man was stealing copper from a home under construction. The Officers found that a contractor was actually tot-ing copper into the home to install the air conditioning system.• Around 8pm, an Officer observed a green Chevy pickup westbound in the eastbound lane of Hwy 80 at Rogers Street. The man turned south on Rogers, and the Officer got him stopped a couple of streets away. The man handed over his Mexican ID card, and paid his fines to avoid a trip to jail. • The real estate agent of the month filed a report when her real estate agent of the month sign was stolen from her appointed parking space at the office.• I’m guessing the Officer just ran out of things to say on this report, or got called away in the middle of

it, because it seems to be incom-plete. What we do know is that a Savannah man was in the bed of his stolen pickup truck heading west-bound on I-16, and was throwing items out of the truck in an attempt to get the attention of other driv-ers to call Police. One item struck the front bumper of a red Chrysler Sebring, causing moderate damag-es. (That’s a pretty good story to tell just to let us know about a scratch on a bumper!)• A woman filed a report about a neighbor’s bassett hound, which she apparently likes and insists is not an aggressive animal. But the

dog was causing her problems as it jumps trying to get at her bunny rabbit in her backyard. (Have you ever seen a bassett hound jump? It’s pretty funny!)

BY AL CARRELL ANDKELLY CARRELL

When air conditioners are run-ning, condensation forms as frost on the coils, and when the com-pressor shuts off, this moisture drips off the coils and into a pan. If the drain line from this pan be-comes clogged, then hopefully the secondary drain will function. But again, if it’s clogged, it can over-flow, and you will have a big mess to clean up. Putting a little bleach into your drain pan or directly into the drain line will prevent this, in most cases, and should be done at the beginning of each cooling sea-son. Doing this usually will prevent

costly accidents.* * *

Dear Carrells: My wife likes the metal objects she finds at flea mar-kets and uses them to decorate our home. I must admit I do like the look, but the rust is not too good for the walls and floors. She says the rust is part of the look. I found that I could spray a clear coat of polyurethane on all of these objects and the rust still shows through, but it’s sealed in and won’t rub off on the walls or floors. -- A.W.

* * *A SUPER HINT -- When paint or stain gets scratched off a furniture surface, use a colored marker to “color” it back in. Sometimes a combination of two colors works best. Check your art-supply or crafts store for the widest selec-tion.

* * *Dear Al: I built some new wood-en stairs for our backyard deck. The old ones were rotting but the supports were still good, so I just replaced the steps. This time, I attached the bottom one with a hinge instead of just nailing it down. I placed a plastic box under the step, and this neat little storage area is where I keep my gloves and smaller garden tools. They stay dry in the plastic box and are always handy when I need them. I used to

keep them in the garage, and I had a lot of trouble getting to them and then putting them back after using them. This way is much easier. -- J.T.

* * *Q: I would like to try some of the new solar collecting products that I am starting to see others use. How do you find good companies and good products? -- G.T.

A: I would start with your power utility company first. Many of them will have listings of contractors to recommend. Always ask for refer-ences and check the Better Busi-ness Bureau for complaints. Try to use products with a proven track record. This can be difficult in this emerging market, but there should be some to choose from.

* * *Dear Kelly: The kids and I made some steppingstones with their handprints and special designs on them. But it’s been a few years, and several of them have broken. I was able to glue them back to-gether with epoxy glue. This, as you probably know, is a two-part glue that, when mixed, is super strong. I glued all of the stones back together, and they are as good as new again. I’m glad I was able to fix them. They really mean a lot to me, and I will put them in a safer

place now. -- D.S.* * *

SHOPTALK -- Cordless tools are great, but the cost of replacing a battery, if you can find one, can be almost as expensive as the tool. Rockwell Power Tools has raised the bar on cordless tools by offering “Batteries for Life” on its cordless tools. Just buy qualifying Rockwell cordless tools and register them within 90 days, and you’re set for life. To learn more, visit the com-pany at www.rockwelltools.com or your Rockwell Tool supplier.

A RARE ONE THAT VERY FEW HAVE EVER SEEN OR HEARD OF

It’s most likely you’ve never heard of Niagara automobile, as this “horseless carriage” was pro-duced more than a century ago and is long forgotten -- along with hun-

dreds of other rare brands from the early days of the 20th century.

This car had an unusual fea-ture, decades ahead of its time: a tiltable steering wheel, to make it easier to get in or out of the driver’s seat. Few other cars had this con-venience before the 1960s.

Parts of this car were made of wood instead of steel, even includ-ing the partially wooden chassis frame. The single-cylinder motor was mounted vertically, at the rear. The car was conveniently started from the driver’s seat, unlike many other autos that had to be cranked from the outside, at the front or at the side.

Interestingly, other early cars were built using a Niagara brand name, including the 1900-1902 Niagara from Niagara Falls, N.Y.; the 1902 Niagara Electric from Buffalo, N.Y.; the Niagara Four of 1915-1916 from Buffalo, N.Y.; and the 1905-1906 La Salle-Niagara of Niagara Falls, N.Y., which replaced the 1903-1905 Niagara you see here.

Old cars can provide a lot of fun, and most increase in value the older they get. Cars as old as this one are seldom found and are not suitable for daily use on highways. But there are still plenty of interest-ing cars from the 1920s to 1980s that are roadworthy and fun to drive. Plus, in an old car club, you can enjoy social activities and meet new friends!

1904 niAGArA

BY TOM AND RAY MAGLIOZZI

Dear Tom and Ray: My son, 16, bought a ‘77 Pon-tiac Grand Prix. It’s loud, with a big motor (muscle-car-type motor, original everything). Anyway, he sawed off the exhaust pipe to make it even louder, even though I told him he could get a ticket for this. He proceeded to tell me that this car “deserved” to be loud. Well, he got pulled over by a police of-ficer, who told him he needed to make his car quieter. He tried to put the clamp back on it, but it doesn’t hold. This brings me to my question: He asked me if duct tape will be OK to hold the pipe to the rest of the exhaust system, without starting some type of fire. I’m not a car expert, so we agreed to ask you guys. -- Rob

RAY: Duct tape is pretty hearty stuff. But I don’t think it’s any match for pressurized, 800-degree exhaust, Rob.

TOM: Traditionally, we’ve always used frozen concentrated orange juice cans to patch up exhaust pipes. But sadly, they’re now made out of cardboard. So we now rec-ommend empty tomato paste cans.

RAY: Better than that, your kid can go to his local auto-parts store and buy an adapter. Almost all auto-parts stores sell metal sleeves that are either slightly larger or slightly smaller in diameter than your ex-haust pipe. The sleeve serves as a coupling, where you stick the sev-ered pieces of the exhaust pipe in either end, and then clamp them down to hold them in place.

TOM: It’s a cheap repair, and it won’t last forever. But based on your son’s approach to this car, I don’t think you’re going to need to plan for forever.

RAY: If you want something a little more permanent, or if he cut it too close to the muffler for the sleeve to work, take the car to a garage or a muffler shop, and ask them to butt the pipes together and weld them.

***To buy or not to buy -- options, that is. Are options worth what you pay for them, or are you better off just going with the basics? Order Tom and Ray’s pamphlet “Should I Buy, Lease, or Steal My Next Car?” to find out. Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Next Car, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
