ployees who do not have a computer.“We encourage our employees to

share their thoughts about our organiza-tion in the survey,” said Ken McCollum, vice president of Human Resources. “Not only are we hoping for inclusion on Mod-ern Healthcare’s list, but we have found the feedback from previous surveys (such as the Great Place to Work Survey) to be very helpful.”

For instance, other surveys led to the creation of our own professional secu-rity team here at NorthBay. It also led to renovation of the cafeteria in NorthBay Medical Center. The NorthBay Way re-wards and recognition program is also another result of input from employees.

“The information inspired us to make major changes,” explained Ken. “And we are always on the lookout for more employee-inspired improvement.”

Occupational TherapyCelebrates Special Week

It was fun and games when it came to celebrating Occu-pational Therapy Week at NorthBay Healthcare.

Interactive games staged at both NorthBay Medical Cen-ter and NorthBay VacaValley Hospi-tal included “Name that therapist,” a sensory game, and a “Name that Adaptive Tool” competition.

Anyone who participated earned a raffle ticket, according to Anna-belle Estrella.

Many of the participants enjoyed the food, educational materials and games.

For OT month, the SIPT team, cardiology, joint replacement pro-gram, neurological, neurosurgery, orthopedic and trauma programs received a basket with goodies and information on how Occupational Therapy helps their patients. NorthBay Raffle Winners

Strike Out Cancer

is Saturday

Survivors Share Their Stories at Special Day of Celebration

A Saluteto the Heroesof EMS WeekNorthBay Healthcare Trauma Outreach Coordinator Ashley Barrios (right) salutes local Emergency Medical Service providers by handing out a NorthBay Trauma Center mug with a Starbucks gift card during EMS week at a mixer Thursday, May 21. Some of the happy recipients included (left to right) Annica Welcker, EMT, Paramedic Supervisor Jim Bugai and Paramedic Cliff Henderson, all of Medic Ambulance.

Defeating cancer is a feat worth celebrating, and that’s what Cancer Survivors’ Day is all about. This year’s festive event is set from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sun-day, June 7, and NorthBay Cancer Center is hosting it at the Clubhouse at Rancho Solano.

Cancer Survivor’s Day events are held across the country on the first Sunday in June, and NorthBay has been coordinating Solano County’s celebration with the American Cancer Society for 18 years.

Survivors and their family members gather to en-joy a luncheon, hear information about the latest in cancer treatments and inspirational stories.

Sharing this year will be Orlando Torres, a young man who has been treated for testicular cancer. Orlando, a cinematography student at Solano Com-munity College, decided at the beginning of his treatment that he would document it, and plans to share some of his videos with the audience. He was also featured in a 2014 Wellspring article, where he shared his thoughts about being diagnosed with can-cer at age 20.

“I try to keep things light and joke about it. I don’t want people to feel bad, but to have fun with it. Cancer is not funny, but we can make fun of it. There’s nothing to be ashamed of (regarding testicu-lar cancer). We have to talk about these things and not shy away from them.”

Guests will also hear from Victor Diaz and Wendy Wasserman Kellogg during the “Speaking from the Heart” portion of the program. Jonathan Lopez, M.D., oncologist with NorthBay Cancer Center, will provide an update on the latest treatments.

Hundreds of NorthBay Healthcare employees and family members have bought tickets to at-tend Genentech’s Strike Out Cancer event when it kicks off at a Sacramento River Cats game on Saturday, June 6.

That means it’s likely to be a sell-out for the NorthBay section, reports Colleen Knight, program coordinator with NorthBay Healthcare Foundation. “We’re encouraging everyone to show their NorthBay pride by wearing NorthBay apparel if they’re going to the game,” Colleen adds.

For the past four years, Genentech and the River Cats have teamed up to raise funds for the NorthBay Cancer Center.

Festivities begin when the gates open at 6 p.m. Genentech employees will greet fans and sell Strike Out Cancer raffle items; some of the funds raised during the raffle will be donated to the NorthBay Cancer Center. At around 6:30 p.m. a short video featuring NorthBay Cancer Center patients who received Genentech drugs will be shown on the Jumbotron.

NorthBay Cancer Center patients will have a chance to throw out the first pitch, and then Colleen will take the infield to sing the National Anthem. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. and the evening concludes with fireworks.

What If Disney Ran Our Hospitals?Workshop Asks Team to Consider the Philosophy

More than 300 NorthBay Healthcare employees participated in two-day workshops in May that focused on “Creating Connections” and building a patient- and family-centered culture.

Keynote speaker Fred Lee, author of the book, “If Disney Ran Your Hospital” offered myriad stories from his research and experiences, and encouraged participants to make courtesy more important than efficiency.

“When you look at your fan mail, you’ll see that the things people really remember and appreciate are the kindness and care that you show,” he said. “They expect efficiency.”

Three patients shared their stories of experiences in our hospitals and NorthBay senior executives shared their vision of the future. The workshops were created and executed by Leadership Academy III. The next step will be to encourage employees to share their stories of connections.

Fred Lee fielded questions at the end of his two-day presentation.

Three of our patients, James Edwards (left to right), Robert Harris and Jennifer Schopp shared stories about their hospital stays.

Nurses Honor TheirSpecial Mentors

The final day of National Nursing Week 2015 was a touching one, with tears and trib-utes offered up during a Day of Remembrance on the patio at NorthBay Medical Center.

Retired Chaplain Gretchen Shilts officiated at the ceremony, in which guests were invited to write the name of a nurse they wanted to honor on a paper ornament and hang it on a small tree.

Guests were also invited to speak up, and a number offered tributes to Barbara Lum, R.N., who died after a short battle with conges-tive heart failure on May 8.

Barbara (see article, Page 7) is re-membered as NorthBay Healthcare’s Mother of Maternity Services. She was hired in 1966 at what was then Intercom-munity Memorial Hospital, and officially retired in 2006.

Barbara’s family attended the event and thanked the speakers who shared their memories of working with Barbara through the years.

Nursing delegates from Hoag Orthopedic Institute in Southern California, including their chief nursing officer, recently visited NorthBay Healthcare to learn more about our Evidence Based Practice program, after hearing a speech given by Elisa Jang, R.N., clinical practice manager, at a National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists Convention.

Elisa described how NorthBay created its Evidence Based Practice and Research Fellowship Program.

The team visited Elisa, Rhonda Martin, assistant vice president of nursing operations and Kathy Richerson, vice president, chief nursing officer. They discussed our Magnet journey and then toured NorthBay Medical Center.

“They were extremely impressed with their observations and loved our huddle boards,” Rhonda notes. “They were also impressed with the unit quality boards and postings of caring and uncaring behaviors.”

In the afternoon, Elisa was able to share a new innovation

of developing an EBP-specific strategic plan.

The team reviewed NorthBay’s EBP Toolkit, which Elisa developed, and has requested a copy.

Hoag is not the first to contact NorthBay about its EBP program, Elisa notes, as she has fielded requests from such organizations as the Mayo Clinic and Good Samaritan multi-hospital organizations based in Cincinnati.

The family of Barbara Lum has requested that Green Valley Administration Center be the site of a special memorial service for the longtime employee who has been called NorthBay Healthcare’s “mother of Maternity services.”

“NorthBay was my mother’s life,” noted her son, Tony Lum.

The service will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, at the Green Valley Administration Center.

Barbara passed away on May 8 at David Grant Medical Center, where she was being treated for congestive heart failure.

Barbara joined Intercommunity Memorial Hospital in 1966, and became director of maternity services in 1973. She was instrumental in building NorthBay’s maternity department and laying the groundwork for the establishment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 1985. She also joined the NorthBay Guild in 1998,

and served for many years as a volunteer and also as chair of the tennis tournament portion of the Guild’s major fundraising event, the Golf & Tennis Classic.

Although she officially retired from nursing in 2006, she did not leave NorthBay. She continued to serve as an instructor for Human Resources for many years, and also volunteered right up until her passing.

Barbara was so passionate about maternal care at NorthBay that she endorsed the creation of a special endowment fund to

benefit families of NICU babies. The Robert and Barbara Lum Endowment fund was initially established when her husband, Robert, passed away last December, and contributions came from employees and physicians throughout the organization, as well as through the recent March of Dimes’ “March for Babies” walk. The fund reached its minimum investment threshold of $10,000 just before Barbara’s passing, and will now continue to serve NICU families through perpetuity.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the fund in Barbara’s memory can do so by sending a check to NorthBay Healthcare Foundation, and putting “Lum Endowment Fund” on the memo line, or making an online donation at www.NorthBay.org, selecting the “Support NorthBay” tab, and then the “Donate Online” buttons. Select the Lum Endowment Fund from the designations menu.

Catherine Baxter of Sen. Lois Wolk’s office came to present a resolution honoring the NICU, co-authored by Sen. Wolk and Assemblymember Jim Frazier.

The oldest “grad” to attend was Jason Wixon who turned 29 this year and the smallest was Lo-gan Doerr, born Feb. 26. Actually, several “grads” in their 20s came with parents to thank the doc-tors for giving them a solid start on life.

Neonatologists Richard Bell, M.D., and Steven Gwiazdowski, M.D., were pleased and stunned to see them all, big and small.

Every grad was invited to leave a handprint or footprint on a canvas, part of special art proj-ect, that will soon be posted on the walls of the second-floor hallway at NorthBay Medical Center.

“We knew we had to do something special to mark the 30th anniversary,” explained Heather Troutt, clinical manager for the Women’s and Children’s Services Department. “We wanted all of them to leave their mark.”

Jason Wixon (above) was the most senior grad of the day while baby Logan Doerr (below) was the youngest.

STARS?Are You Seeing

If you thought you were seeing stars during Employee Appreciation

Meals, you’re right.

It was all part of the annual de-partment decorat-ing contest.

“There were some steller en-tries this year,” said Cyndy Gia-

quinto, R.N., member of the Employee Appreciation Committee.

The competition was judged by Guild volunteers, and the winners are:

First place: Engineering/biomed

Second place: General Surgery (outpatient offices)

Third place: Adult Day Center.

Honorable mention awards

went to the Center for Wound Care and Neurology.

All the stars entered in competition were carried in the Fiesta Days Parade.

Jessica Johnson shows off some of the star entries.

Employees at all three locations (Green Valley, North-Bay Medical Center and NorthBay VacaValley Hospital)

took a few minutes to sign the “Celebrating Excellence” banner that was carried in our entry in the Fiesta Days

Parade on May 23.

Sharing Some Super Summer Recipes

Grief is not something expe-rienced only by adults; children can suffer as well, and it can af-fect their appetite, sleep, school-work and overall life.

If you know a child or teen who is struggling with the loss of a friend or loved one, guidance is available through a free NorthBay Hospice & Bereavement work-shop.

“Parenting Your Grieving Child” will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. tonight (May 27) at the NorthBay Bereave-ment Center, 4520 Business Center Drive in Fairfield. Theresa Baides, LCSW, a trained facilita-tor leads the workshop, where she teaches adults to recognize warning signs of grief in kids, and how to help them.

NorthBay Bereavement also conducts support groups for teens and children, and parents will have an opportunity to learn more about these free meetings and when the sessions are held.

To reserve a space, call (707) 646-3517, or go to www.North-Bay.org/griefsupport.

Help is There forGrieving Children

By Kathleen Shafer, MA, RD

NorthBay Healthcare can-not do the great things it does without great employees and we have some of the best.

We just finished a whirlwind week of Employee Appreciation Meals and have had several re-quests for recipes. I’m including both the bulgur wheat salad and the kale slaw salad. Remember that you can add and subtract in-gredients and tailor it to fit your taste.

These recipes are also easy

to produce in large batches for leftovers or larger parties. Be healthy, be happy.

Bulgur Appre-ciation Salad

(Serves 4) Ingredients: 3/4 c. Bulgur wheat 1/2 c. Vegetable broth 1 to 1/2 tbls. Roasted red pep-pers, chopped 1/4 c. English cucumber, chopped 1/8-1/2 c. Green onions, chopped 1/2 to 1 oz. Feta cheese, crum-bled 1/4 c. Black beans, canned, drained, rinsed 1/4 c. Shredded carrot 1/4 c. Italian parsley, chopped 3 green olives, chopped 1/4 c. Tomatoes, chopped 3/4 c. Lite Italian Dressing 2 tsp. Dijon mustard 1 tsp. Lemon juice Directions:

In saucepan bring broth and bulgur to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat; cover and simmer

for 20 minutes or until all liquid is ab-sorbed and bulgur is tender. Remove from heat and cool.

In a bowl, whisk lemon juice, mus-tard and dressing.

Add remain-ing ingredients to cooled bulgur and

stir together, drizzle with dress-ing mixture and toss to coat. Add kosher salt and pepper to taste.

Yummy additions/substitu-tions include sundried tomatoes, shredded zucchini, chopped grilled or raw asparagus.

Kale Appreciation Slaw ¾ lb. Assorted shredded veg-etables: broccoli slaw, kohlrabi, carrots, red cabbage, shaved Brussels sprouts ½ c. Dried cranberries ¼ lb. Chopped kale, stems re-moved Poppyseed dressing

Mix shredded vegetables with cranberries and kale. Add a very light coating of dressing and toss together well.
