Location • in the center of the Spis region• 634 meters above sea level• on dolomit rock• it is located above Spisske podhradie

History• is very rich• the rock under castle was inhabited already 40 000 years ago• first tower of the castle was built in 11th or 12th century• other parts were built in 13th century

• in 1312 Matúš Čák Trenčiansky wanted to conquer the castle without success

• as a result, the castle was enlarged and rebuilt in the Gothic style shortly after

• in 1443 Jan Jiskra gained the castle and rebuilt it to the actual appearance

• later the king donated the castle to the family Zapoľský and it became their seat

• later it became properity of the house of Habsburg, Turzo and Csaky

• in 1780 the castle burned • from that time the castle became a ruin• in recent years the castle was reconstructing and

repairing• the lower courtyard was open to public in 1983

Castle today

• biggest castle structure in middle Europe• it is opened from April to November• in summer there are big middle age actions with

soldiers, battles, lords and craftsmen• there is still archeological research in the basement

of the castle

• You can also visit Spišské podhradie and Spišska kapitula which is very beautiful church

• lot of hiking routes of difirent dificulties• lot of restaurants not far from there• It is near highway, so transportation is not problem
