Developing Strategic VisionsThe development of strategic visions is critical to the success of organizations. Through my professional and volunteer work I have, on several occasions, been an integral part, individually and collaboratively, developing strategic visions.

At Temple University, I was involved in supporting the Division of Student Affairs Strategic Vision through a variety of initiatives. First, I supported the Vice President of Student Affairs as a key leader on the Communication and Collaboration Task Force and developing initiatives to celebrate the division’s strategic vision. During the 2008-2009 fiscal year, I created a campaign to redesign print materials used to illustrate the division’s Mission, Vision, and Values and distributed these promotional items through each office within the Division of Student Affairs.

Also, in the spring of 2009, I created and executed a new division-wide recognition program aimed to recognize five colleagues within the Division of Student Affairs who best exemplify the divisions’ Values. Now in its third year of operation, the program has been a huge success and has generated increased awareness and support of the divisions Strategic Mission.

I also served on the planning committees for division wide staff development initiatives such as the annual, week long Summer Retreat Program, as well as the annual Winter Retreat for senior Student Affairs administrators.

Through my volunteer activities, as an Executive Officer of the Mid-Atlantic Association for College and University Housing Officers (MACUHO) I have

been involved in the development and execution of the Association Strategic Vision. One of the highlights of this vision has been the restructuring of the Association’s Organization Structure that was passed at the Fall 2011 Conference in Reading, PA. For

over four years, I provided leadership and direction in designing thoughtful goals and objectives and through my leadership as Vice President and President of the Association, successful led a team of over 40 officers and volunteers in successfully executing most of the goals outlined in the Strategic Plan ahead of schedule.

The ability to develop sound strategic visions and generate support of these strategies involved effectively collaborating with numerous individuals, involving them in the strategic planning process, and effectively communicating objectives, goals, and expectations at various levels of each organization I have helped to improve the organizational success.

Setting a Vision

“All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse.”

Engaging students through integrated marketing communications.

This has been an area of great success for me during my thirteen-year career in advertising and higher education.

As an advertising professional, I worked and managed accounts for clients in the Philadelphia area in the travel and tourism, education, banking, and telecommunication and cable industries. Understanding the needs and wants of both consumers and business-to-business markets was something I addressed successfully for my clients. Utilizing a variety of promotional mix strategies, I was able to develop several creative services for clients reaching their business goals.

In higher education, I was able to utilize this experience in my role in the administration, communication, and execution of housing services at La Salle University and Temple University. In my roles, I have developed annual integrated marketing communications plans, collaborated with divisional and institutional partners, and solicited feedback from students and parents in the successful implementation of marketing programs.

As a member of the Association for College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I) I have served on the Marketing and Communications Committee, serving as Chair, and helping the association to raise awareness and standards in the area of marketing and communications within the field of University Housing and Residential Life on a national level. I have presented nationally on developing effective marketing communications

programs, on-line housing selection, use of the Apple iPad to deliver housing services, and information technology in Student Affairs. I also serve on the Task Force for the Certificate Program for Occupancy Management.

At Temple, I worked with the University’s Creative Services department, including Web

Communications, University Communications, Temple Review, and the Undergraduate Admissions Office to effectively enhance the University Housing and Residential Life brand through a variety of initiatives and campaigns.

I was also asked to lead efforts to support the development of brand building for the Division of Student Affairs. For example, during the spring 2009 semester, I lead an effort to develop a print and on-line Guide to Student Affairs celebrating the diversity of our division and the impact Student Affairs has on the Temple community.

Engaging students through through marketing

“The organizations of the future will increasingly depend on the creativity of their members to survive. Great groups offer a new model in which the leader is an equal among Titans. In a truly creative collaboration, work is pleasure, and the only rules and procedures are those that advance the common cause."

As a senior level support staff member in housing services at La Salle University and Temple University, I have been involved in managing and leading efforts to maintain, secure, and enhance residential facilities. In addition I developed efficient and effective administrative processes to support the services at both institutions.

Security and Guest OperationsAt La Salle University, I supervised the Front Desk Security staff across five residential complexes including eleven residence halls and apartment buildings. With a staff of over 30 Security Desk Receptionists and 3 Shift Supervisors, I helped supervise the operation providing 24-hour security coverage of the residence halls and oversaw the enhancement of our guest registration system.

At Temple University, we used Allied Barton Security, so managing this staff was less of a time constraint on our department.

Maintenance and Capital ProjectsAt both La Salle University and Temple University, I participated in strategies for the regular update and maintenance of residential facilities.

At La Salle University, a team comprised of Physical Facilities supervisors and managers worked collaboratively with the Administrative Services department on a weekly basis to review important jobs, scheduling of building maintenance and capital projects, and planning for any major disruptions of service to the residential student population.

At Temple University, a group of Assistant Directors within University Housing and Residential Life met bi-weekly to review, strategize, and plan for similar tasks. I was one of the creators and facilitators of the Assistant Directors Workgroup and for over four years I have planned, executed, and facilitated meetings and the intentional collaboration between the three units within the department: Housing Services, Residential Life, and Maintenance Operations.

On a yearly basis, the Maintenance Operations staff would develop a Maintenance Plan for it’s facilities and routine cleaning and maintenance would be conducted during the summer months.

Administrative Processes for Housing ServicesAt both La Salle University and Temple University, I directly planned, managed, and executed strategies aimed at the effective and efficient use of processes for students acquiring housing services.

These services included:• Housing Selection• Fall Early Arrival• Fall Move-in• Housing and Break Extension• Room Change Process• Meal Plan registrations,

changes, and cancellations

During my time in the University Housing and Residential Life field, I have led strategies to improve the process of requesting these services with a special emphasis in the area of information technology. Through my guidance and leadership at both La Salle University and Temple University, web applications were developed to streamline application procedures and enabling staff to utilize web applications to process these requests and monitor requests in a time efficient manner. Furthermore, these improvements enhanced reporting capabilities that improved customer services and billing functions.

Delivering services to students and overseeing the execution of technologies used for requesting services.

At La Salle University, one of the area of responsibility in addition to supervising the Front Desk Security staff was also managing three mail room operations for on-campus students.

At Temple University, one of my main areas of responsibilities was the management of our occupancy management system that included annual planning for the housing selection process utilizing RMS and the Student Web Self-Assign (SWSA) system. As part of the procedures for planning and leading these efforts, I was responsible for developing an annual Occupancy Management Plan, that included an occupancy strategy, weekly occupancy reports, and all relevant marketing material to promote the process and encourage participation from students in registering for housing and meal plans. In addition to working with Enrollment Management, Admissions, and the Welcome Center, I collaborated with Temple’s Athletics department, various Living Learning Community Programs, various academic departments, Disability Resource Services, and Residential Life staff.

At both La Salle University and Temple University, I served in a leadership role in developing occupancy management strategies, developed policies and procedures related to on- and off-campus residential populations, and utilized information technology to enhance the efficiency of these processes for superior customer services.

At Temple University, I led a team of programmers and designers in developing a series of web applications in a system called Housing On Demand, a series of applications designed to improve the administrative processes involved with requesting housing services for more than 5,200 residential students including undergraduate and graduate students.
