Introducing...Ocean City Recreation and Parks is happy to announce changes and additions to our outstanding staff…

Cody started in his new role with OCRP in May of this year, however he had two years previous work experience with the town’s Special Events division, which also operates out of Northside Park. Growing up Cody attended a number of OCRP programs and camps including Camp Horizon, fishing, tee ball, basketball, and baseball. Cody Likes working with children, and is especially fond of our afterschool programs where he enjoys getting to know area kids. Cody is always willing to lend a helping hand!

Shaun McKenzie, Builidng Maintenance Work IWe are happy to welcome Shaun McKenzie as our new Building Custodian. Shaun started in his new role with OCRP in June of this year. Shaun is a resident of Berlin. He is a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School and holds an Associate’s degree in Computer Technology from Wor-Wic Community College. Shaun is responsible for keeping our facility looking in tip-top shape! He enjoys his work and in his spare time likes to play video games and go to the movies.

In Memoriam...ANN BRENTOur dear Ms. Ann hosted her last Valentine’s Dance event on February 14, of this year. She passed away peacefully on March 21, 2015 at the young age of 83. Ann was a dedicated employee, friend, and a ball full of energy! She worked at Ocean City Recreation Parks as our Senior Coordinator for 17 years. Ms. Ann was responsible for all of OCRP’s senior programming, including, bingo, fine arts, ceramics, water aerobics, yoga, one-day events, holiday events, picnics, trips, the bowling league and, of course, line dancing. She will perhaps most be remembered for the energy she brought to every event and performance. Whether it be for her memorable line dancing solos, the care with which she selected the music and decorations for each holiday event, or simply the ears she lent to so many, Ms. Ann will not soon be forgotten. Many have said it is the end of an area. She will be greatly missed.

REBA FELTYReba Ann Felty, former President of the Ocean City Recreation Boosters, passed away on June 12, 2015. Reba donated many hours of her time to leading a group of volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that area children are able to enjoy the recreation programs we have to offer here at OCRP. Reba was a member of the Boosters for more than 15 years. For 13 of those years, she led the efforts of the organization as President. In 2008, Reba was honored as Volunteer of The Year. Her efforts were tremendous throughout her time with us. She was a leader but also very hands-on with fundraising efforts, including assistance with Springfest, Sunfest, Winterfest, Sunset Park Party Nights and other holiday functions and special events. Reba told us that she thoroughly enjoyed the work that she did with the Boosters, as well as the people she worked with.

In addition to her work with the Boosters, Reba served a number of other to non-profit organizations. She was one of the original Ocean City Chamber of Commerce ambassadors, Ocean Pines Chamber of Commerce president, and GBC founder and president. Reba was also a member of the OC Parrothead Club, Worcester County Humane Society, Optimist Club, and OC Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association, to name a few. Reba was the ultimate community servant. A huge void was created in her passing. She will be greatly missed.

Introducing...Meet New Booster President, MEREDITH WALLACE Ocean City Recreation and Parks is thrilled to announce that Meredith Wallace will serve as the new president of the Ocean City Recreation Boosters. Meredith is a National Board Certified Teacher with a passion for “helping children be the best they can be. Meredith and her family have spent a lot of time participating in Ocean City recreation programs.” Her husband has been a volunteer coach for the past five years, coaching both of their children’s soccer teams. According to Meredith, “Given the amount of time our family spends participating in the recreation programs, becoming an active member of the OC Recreation Boosters seemed to be a perfect fit.”

Meredith thinks that all children should have the opportunity to participate in the recreation programs run by the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department. She works hard to not only manage the fundraising efforts of the OC Recreation Boosters, but she assists hands-on, as well.

Meredith and her family also support the Worcester County Humane Society through donations and volunteering during the summer and Worcester County GOLD at various times throughout the year.

Ocean City Recreation & Parks...get to know us!OCEAN CITY BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEEThe Town of Ocean City Beautification Committee works in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks to bring the beauty of trees and color to our barrier island town. The volunteer members are appointed and commissioned by the Mayor and City Council to help determine the needs of the town for the planting, maintenance, and protection of all trees on the streets and in the parks of Ocean City. The members provide assistance by making referrals for the enforcement of the landscape code. They also engage in a calendar year full of special events and activities. Each spring the Ocean City Beautification Committee, along with second grade students from Ocean City Elementary School, join to produce an Arbor Day celebration for the town, at Northside Park. During the festivities, the Mayor is presented with the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA Award and the MD P.L.A.N.T. Award, which is administered by the Maryland Community Forest Committee. Each summer the committee tours the town to review nominated properties for Beauty Spots Awards, which the Mayor and City Council present in September at a City Council meeting. Finally, each December, the committee beautifully decorates City Hall for the holidays. In January 2015, a long desired project of the Beautification Committee came to fruition with the completion of the aesthetically pleasing water feature at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center. The funds for it were raised from donations to the lovely metal sculpture, Reflections of Life, inside the convention center. For those interested in honoring or remembering a loved one or friend, there are still leaves available on the Reflections of Life tree. Donna Greenwood serves as the Chair of the committee and the members are Jennifer Albright, Eleanor Curcio, Steve Genua, Donna Reid, Nancy Smith, and Toni Wagner. Please visit the committee on the web at www.oceancitymd.gov/bc/ or email them at [email protected].
