Greetings family and friends of SPLC! Most food we make, purchase, and use has a shelf life.

Some longer, some shorter, but at some point, we know goods expire. This is especially true with

bread. When not used in a timely manner, bread dries out, hardens, and even molds. How

different is the bread Jesus teaches of, the bread that is Himself. Continuing in John 6, He

teaches the people what He came to provide, which is Himself from heaven. In our worship, in

our reception of His Means of Grace, in our prayers and praise, and in our daily lives, let us

rejoice in the Bread that lasts for our needs of faith and forgiveness, that we, too, may

continually “taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 34:8).

James 5:16 states, “The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” As we move through this pastoral transition period, continue to look to the Lord. Call on the Lord that in due time he will send another unique servant to lead his flock at SPLC. Let us pray… “Lord God, we are in need of a new pastor to be among us to lead us and walk with us. Direct us as we wait. Bless all who serve in the congregation, especially those who have the responsibility to lead us in the call process. Bless us, Lord Jesus. Amen.

THE CHURCH OF GOD IS MARCHING ON

During this time of pastoral transition, your participation and commitment is extremely important to the future of Saint Paul Lutheran Church. Here’s how you can help: Remain Faithful to Attend Services – If there is ever a time SPLC needs you, it’s now. Don’t use the absence of a permanent pastor or the virus as reason to stay away from church. This is the very time to increase your faithfulness in all areas: worship, stewardship, witness, study, and service. Remain Prayed Up – Satan will use our pastoral vacancy to “steal, kill, and destroy” if we’re not careful.

Let your prayers be ceaseless for our church, its membership, its leadership, and the call process. Remain Faithful in Your Giving – SPLC suffered two major blows since March 2020: shift to virtual worship due to the virus followed by the death of our Pastor. Despite those events, the church remains open and dependent on our tithes and giving to support mission and ministry. Remain Faithful in Service –While blessed to have a Pastor Emeritus temporarily shepherd our flock, the church is dependent on each of us to do our part to support all aspects of its operation and purpose – worship, evangelism, social ministry, Christian education, youth, property, spiritual care, etc. Now is the time to step up and volunteer.

You may have noticed that the worship service is not always available on YouTube. We are currently looking at the pros and cons of live streaming and its impact on “in-person” worship as well as our ability to staff the production each week. Stay tuned!

“Unwilling Prophet” is the title of Wednesday’s lesson. Jonah, a reluctant prophet, tries to flee God’s calling

to declare His message to Nineveh. Attempting to escape by boat, Jonah finds himself cast into the sea,

swallowed by a great fish, praying for deliverance, and spit up on the beach three days later. The people of

Nineveh receive and respond to the message Jonah delivers, repenting of their sins before God. Angered at

God’s mercy, Jonah heads out of the city to sulk. There, God reminds Jonah who is in control.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH – MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY – AUGUST 11, 2021

Unit 6 STUDY GUIDE

Lesson 5

UNWILLING PROPHET

Jonah

Jonah 1–3

BIBLE TRUTH

God rescues and gives life.

LEARNER GOAL

I can connect God’s mercy in the narrative of Jonah to God’s mercy to me and all His people in Christ.

BIBLE VERSE

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Class Reflections

OPENING REFLECTION What’s the most memorable “rescue” story you know from either media or just

your life?

JONAH 1:1–3 Why does the text say that God instructed Jonah to go to Nineveh? What do you suppose

was the reason Jonah didn’t go?

JONAH 1:4–17 Contrast Jonah’s view toward caring for others to that of the pagan sailors. Why do you

suppose so much attention was given to these details in the narrative?

JONAH 2 What are some details from the text of Jonah’s song that reveal God’s desire to rescue and save

the lost?

JONAH 3 What from this section reveals God’s usual means for bringing people to repentance and the new

life of forgiveness? What implications might this have for us today?

FINAL REFLECTION Connect God’s mercy in the narrative of Jonah to God’s mercy to you and all His

people in Christ.
