If it’s been a while since you’ve checked out the new cars, this weekend would be a great time to catch up. The Spokane New Car Dealers Association presents its annual International Auto Show through Sunday at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center. This year’s slate of cars, trucks, SUVs and vans is the safest and most comfortable, reliable and efficient ever, says Kristin Goff, president of the New Car Dealers Association and owner of Wendle Motors. “Anyone who hasn’t looked at the new cars for a while will be amazed at what the manufacturers are building,” Goff says. “The technology is what amazes folks the most; they can’t believe what these cars offer.” Among the cars on display, there those that can stop themselves if an accident is imminent. There are cars equipped with inflatable seat belts, rearview cameras and blind-spot warning systems. Cars that encourage safe and efficient driving.
“Customers who haven’t bought a car for so long don’t realize how safe and efficient these cars are,” Goff said. ”With stability control, airbags, inflatable seat belts, they’re all so much safer than they’ve ever been.” It’s not necessary to spend a bundle to take advantage of the latest and great-est, she notes. The trend toward more comfortable, safer and better-equipped small cars continues. Even entry-level buyers will be surprised by what their hard-earned dollars will fetch.
Easier now to either buy or lease Dealership representatives will be on hand at the show to answer questions and offer demonstration drives, Goff says. “And for those that are ready to buy, it’s a time when the manufacturers and dealerships offer excellent incentives. “That’s another area where customers are surprised,” she adds. “we all have multiple banks we work with and the incentives and financing rates are unbeliev-able.” Leasing is back in a big way, too, she said, as manufacturers take advantage of the low cost of money to create attractive lease options.
Keep it home; buy local Spokane’s local dealer network actively supports the community, Goff says. “Our new car dealers are known for their generosity when it comes to volunteer-ing time and resources. “Our customers know that when they shop local, their sales tax dollars help fund our schools, parks, public safety, street maintenance and more.”
Just looking? Come anyway! It’s hard to beat the Auto Show for pure entertainment value, Goff says. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re a car enthusiast ... or just looking for something to do with the family this weekend, the auto show has something for everyone.” Twenty-seven manufacturers will be represented at the show, making it a per-fect opportunity to see all the new cars under a single roof. And you can come back as often as you like until the doors close Sunday at 6 PM.
See you there!

The potent and efficient Mazda3 sedan and hatchback are fully redesigned this year, starting with a new lightweight platform. Wider, lower and longer, the 3 gets a more aggressive look and a more powerful and efficient pair of four-cylinder engine choices. A dramatic interior makeover brings a more fluid and dynamic feel, along with vastly improved materials. There’s more standard equip-ment, including a new electronics interface and a batch of new safety gear. More refined, efficient and mature, the Mazda3 remains a ball to drive.
The Mazda6 is also redesigned, while remaining more entertaining than most midsize sedans. A new 185-hp four-cylinder engine produces 30 mpg combined, while a new 2.2-liter turbo-diesel is expected to return 40 mpg combined. Its roomy cabin, sterling driving dynamics and user-friendly controls give it a leg up in the midsize sedan category. Spry and agile, efficient and comfortable, the new 6 strikes an enviable balance among popular family sedans.

Subaru ventures into hybrid territory with the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid. Because it’s a full hybrid, the Crosstrek can be driven at low speeds on electric power alone, potentially improving efficiency in stop-and-go driving. Combined EPA fuel efficiency is rated at 31 mpg. Crosstreks equipped with navigation also get smartphone integration this year. The fully redesigned 2014 Forester grows this year, adding critical interior space for both people and their stuff. Engine upgrades and a new CVT transmis-
sion boost fuel economy to near-class-leading specs. The CVT replaces last year’s four-speed automatic, while a six-speed manual replaces the previous five-speed box. The base 2.5L, 170-hp four-cylinder engine carries over, with an optional new 250-hp, 2.0L turbocharged four on tap. The redesigned cabin has a more contemporary feel and features higher-quality materials. Rear-seat legroom grows and the cargo hold adds 6 cubic feet of storage space.

Heralding one possible scenario for future basic transport, Mitsubishi gives us the all-new subcompact Mirage hatchback. Powered by a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine, the littlest Mitsu garners 34 mpg city/42 mpg highway/37 mpg com-bined with its standard five-speed manual transmission and 37/44/40 with a CVT. Standard equipment includes such items as keyless entry and automatic climate control, and options include navigation, a rearview camera and parking sensors. The 60/40 split rear seats fold for added cargo space and the four-speaker sound system includes a CD player and USB and auxiliary audio inputs. The third-generation Outlander crossover gets improved fuel mileage and a more stylish interior with better materials and a telescoping steering wheel. Third-row seating is standard, as are foglights, heated mirrors, rear privacy glass, full power accessories and automatic climate control. Both engines -- a 166-hp four and 224-hp V-6 -- see a jump in combined fuel efficiency of 2 mpg.

From the Big Things in Small Packages department, Buick’s compact Encore gets such standard gear as a new-and-improved version of Buick’s IntelliLink touchscreen interface, a rearview camera and a folding front passenger seat that makes room for 8-foot-long objects. A new turbocharged four boosts Regal’s power by 17 percent, with efficiency up by as much as 18 percent. A new AWD system uses an electronic limit-slip rear differential for superior traction. For 2014, Regal and LaCrosse add optional adaptive cruise control, lane-change alerts, rear cross-traffic alerts and the updat-ed IntelliLink interface.
The fully redesigned, third-generation Highlander seats up to eight, sees a significant boost in cargo space and gets a more refined and functional cabin. A more muscular look incorporates Toyota’s emphatic new grille, a raised hood-line and pronounced fender flares. Standard equipment includes a 6.1-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth, rearview camera, blind-spot monitor and a pre-collision system. A new six-speed automatic transmission enhances performance and fuel efficiency, and a revised rear suspension improves ride quality and helps boost cargo space. The all-new Corolla also wears Toyota’s aggressive new grille, which is flanked by LED low beams. Slightly longer, lower and wider than before, Corolla adds 5 inches of rear-seat legroom. An updated instrument panel and new,
improved interior materials dress up the cabin. A CVT replaces last year’s four-speed automatic in some trims and a new LE Eco trim fetches EPA ratings of 35 mpg combined (30 city/42 highway). All Corollas have power windows and mirrors, air-conditioning, Bluetooth phone connectivity, steering wheel audio controls and more. 4Runner and Tundra receive updated exterior styling and freshened interiors. A touchscreen-based audio system and Toyota’s Entune suite of smartphone-connected apps are standard on all 4Runners, as is a rearview camera. With its squared-off lines, larger grille and elevated hood, Tundra’s sheet metal gains a more rugged look. Its gauge cluster is cleaner and more contempo-rary. Relocated audio controls are easier to reach.
The 2014 Encore offers a flexible seating package, big tech and newly available blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alerts.

Scion’s fun-driving tC picks up some style tips from its FR-S sports-car sibling, receives key cabin updates and lands an improved transmission. An aggressive new front fascia, sculpted hood and new wheels add new splash to the exterior, while the cabin gets a 6.1-inch audio-system touchscreen, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth. The revised automatic transmission makes quicker shifts and rev-matches downshifts. The tC’s chassis is stiffer and the suspension and steering are retuned for sportier responses. Also, a monochromatic 10th anniversary model arrives.

Those living in the suburbs and enduring a lengthy daily commute probably won’t reap the full benefits of a hybrid powered car compared to those residing in urban areas, according to a recent study conducted by research-ers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. “We found that for highway drivers, hybrid and plug-in vehicles cost more without much benefit to the environment,” says Jeremy J. Michalek, a professor of mechanical engineering and engineering and public policy at CMU. “But for drivers who experience a lot of idling and stop-and-go traffic, a hybrid could lower lifetime costs by 20 percent and cut green-house gas emissions in half.” That’s because a hybrid car’s electric motor does more of the work at slower speeds, with the gasoline engine generally running the show on the highway. What’s more, a hybrid’s engine automatically shuts down at stoplights or while at idle to further save gas. – Jim Gorzelany© CTW Features

Coupes receive new styling front and rear and LX and Si trims add firmer suspension tuning. New options include a larger touchscreen, enhanced smart-phone integration and a blind-spot camera.

The subcompact Fiesta sedan and hatchback, Ford’s smallest cars, get a new look this year, as the company’s sharp new grille comes aboard. There are also new standard features and the MyFord Touch electronics interface is newly available. The really big news is the addition of the new performance-oriented Fiesta ST. Powered by a 197-hp four-cylinder engine, the ST runs a six-speed manual transmission, performance-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels and upgraded brakes. Nicely bol-stered sport seats come standard, with Recaros optional. On the heels of last year’s full redesign, the Fusion receives a new, high-mileage 1.5L four-cylinder engine option, as well as available inflatable rear seat belts, heated steering wheel and venti-lated front seats. All-wheel-drive is available.
Nobody knows diesel quite like Audi, so it’s no surprise to find its 2014 lineup littered with powerful and high-efficien-cy diesel-powered cars and crossovers. This year, the compact Q5 crossover adds a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 die-sel that makes 240 hp and 428 lb.-ft. of torque, while garnering an EPA esti-mated 24 city/31 highway/27 combined. Also new is the SQ5, a performance variant powered by a supercharged direct-injected 354-hp V-6. The A6, A7 and A8 families add clean diesel options, all of them quick, sophis-ticated and economical to operate. Audi’s bodacious R8 is back, with a new seven-speed S tronic transmission and the line-topping 550-hp R8 V10 Plus Coupe. Should be good for 0-60 in 3.3 seconds.

Acura’s less-is-more philosophy bears fruit this year with a lighter and more efficient MDX. It emerges from a full makeover 275 pounds lighter and with a 17 percent fuel-efficiency gain. A new direct-injection V-6 has less horsepower but more low-end torque than the engine it replaces; it’s quicker than before and can still tow up to 5,000 pounds. A new 2WD MDX debuts and all trims get a roomier, more attractive and more functional cabin and a new touchscreen con-trol system.
The new midsize RLX luxury sedan debuted in FWD/V-6 trim, but quickly morphed into an AWD hybrid. The hybrid is rated at 370 hp and produces 30 mpg combined mpg. Loaded with technology -- including a 14-speaker audio system from high-end home audio maker Krell -- and bearing Acura’s trademark lux-cum-performance mindset, it will appeal to drivers who value substance over flash. The compact ILX adds new standard equipment, along with a new hybrid trim.
Acura’s best-seller sheds 275 pounds, gets an efficient new engine and redesigned cabin. Also, a 2WD model debuts.

Roomy and efficient, the 2014 Nissan Rogue offers three-row seating in a thrifty compact package. Its 170-hp 2.5-liter four is paired with a continuously variable transmission to deliver 28 mpg combined EPA rating, even with AWD. Standard equipment includes LED running lights, power mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators, rearview camera, a 5-inch color infotainment display, Bluetooth connectivity and more. The handsomely designed cabin is line with soft-touch materials and NASA-inspired “zero gravity” seats are as comfortable in principle
as they are in theory. Two-row Rogues feature a handy cargo dividing system. The 197-hp Juke Nismo gets a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels with summer tires, unique styling details and sport seats. New fuel injectors improve GT-R’s mid- and high-range throttle response and a new oil pan baffle stabilizes oil delivery during high-performance driving.

For 2014, a new, 170-hp 1.8-liter turbocharged four replaces the Jetta’s venerable five-cylinder engine. Besides being more refined (i.e., quieter and smoother) it’s quicker and more efficient, boasting EPA ratings of 30 mpg combined (26 mpg city/36 mpg highway) with the standard five-speed manual transmission and 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway) with the six-speed automat-ic. Ride and handling improve, thanks to a newly standard independent rear suspension. Also new: an optional rearview camera and VW’s Car-Net telematics. Passat’s SEL trim also gets the new four, as well as optional telematics. A rearview camera is now standard on most Passat trims, including this year’s new Sport trim. A new limited-edition Beetle GSR sports a bold yellow-and-black paint scheme. The Beetle Turbo adds 10 horsepower and is now called the Beetle R-Line. The CC debuts a new midlevel Executive trim and adds new standard features. A sporty R-Line trim joins both the Tiguan and Touareg families.

A new V-6 joins the Silverado lineup this year. It makes 285 hp and 305 lb.-ft. of torque and has 7,200-lb. tow rating. Its estimated 18 city/24 high-way mileage numbers are an attractive upside. Meantime, direct injection and cylinder deactivation boost power and efficiency on the company’s 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s. Suspension updates produce a smoother ride and new forward-opening doors enhance extended-cab models. An updated cab, with upgraded materials, and newly available safety fea-tures also debut. The all-new, 2014 Impala improves on its prede-cessor in every important way. Its roomy and rede-signed cabin represents a huge step forward, as do its excellent ride and precise steering. Three engines include a 305-hp V-6 and a pair of fours, one a mild hybrid that fetches EPA ratings of 25 city/35 high-way/29 combined. A turbocharged four-cylinder diesel good for 33 combined mpg adds to the compact Cruz’s pow-ertrain options. The Volt gets a big price drop. Performance notes: Chevy’s first rear-drive per-formance sedan since 1996, the new SS is powered by a 415-hp 6.2-liter V-6. A track-prepped, light-weight Z/28 joins the Camaro lineup, powered by a ‘Vette-derived 500-hp 7.0-liter V-8.

For 2014, Infiniti introduces a new product naming system. Going forward, its sedans, coupes and convertibles will fly under the Q prefix, while crossovers and SUVs will be designated QX. The first of the sedans to carry the Q is the all-new Q50, which replaces the G37. More dynamic inside and out, it’s equipped with a 328-hp 3.7-liter V-6 that feeds the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid version boasts a combined output of 354 hp. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. There’s a new, twin-touchscreen electronics interface
and new collision-prevention-based safety systems, including some not available elsewhere. The 2014 QX60 luxury crossover replaces last year’s JX and adds a hybrid ver-sion. The three-row rig can handle up to seven adults, thanks to a second row that slides fore and aft. The new hybrid uses a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cyl-inder engine, electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack to produce 250 horse-power and estimated combined fuel economy of 26 mpg.

Q: I’ve never leased a car, and am considering doing so. I’d like some information on several matters, including what kind of penalties there are if you go over the agreed-upon mileage when the car is turned in. A: I suggest you do a great deal of homework before you meet with the first leasing agent. Then you’ll be aware of the potential pitfalls, and you can, if you decide leasing is the right route for you, arrange the best possible terms for your particular circumstances. A good place to start your research efforts is USA.gov. When you get to that home page, type “leasing a car” into the search area and that will return several different documents and pages that provide, in combo, a quite-good basic education on the upsides and downsides of leasing. Among the things you’ll learn: it is vital to read – and understand – every single word of the leasing agreement you might sign, the terms can be very different from company to company, and it might be possible to negotiate a few details at the front end. Your question about excess mileage at turn-in time is extremely important – one that often, in fact, winds up biting the wallets of people who lease vehicles. Most deals allow you 10,000 to 15,000 miles annually. If you think there’s a chance you’ll exceed the mileage limit, you should definitely choose a higher-mileage deal, as 10 cents to 25 cents for each additional mile beyond the agreed-upon mileage is what you can expect to be charged. Several online tools help you calculate the financial aspects of leasing. Leaseguide.com and Leasecompare.com are easy to navigate and provide good leasing tips or links to them.Q: My nephew is planning to buy a new Jeep Grand Cherokee that he claims will go 600 miles between fill-ups. I’m doubtful. What about you?A: The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel gets, according to the EPA estimates, 21 to 28 mpg. Assuming an average of 26 mpg, this vehicle would, with its 24.6-gallon tank, get 600-plus miles between fill-ups. If 100 percent of the driving were city driving, it wouldn’t make the 600-miles mark, but with 60 or 70 percent highway driving (employing not-crazy driving habits) it definitely could. © CTW Features
