SpongeBob and Patrick love to go jellyfishing. They wondered if a new brand of jellyfish bait would help them catch more jellyfish. To test their idea, they bought a big container of bait for their next 3 trips to their top-secret fishing spot. SpongeBob fished without any bait, while Patrick used the new bait. Both of them kept track of how many jellyfish they caught in 30 minutes, which is shown in the chart. 1.Which person was the control? 2. What is the independent variable? 3. What is the dependent variable? SpongeBo b Patrick 25 24 18 28 26 19

Agenda:Notes: Composition of the Atmosphere

Objectives: I CAN . . Design and conduct an investigation to determine how the sun drives atmospheric convection.

Characteristics of the Atmosphere

Think about it

List the ways that the atmosphere is different from outer space.

The Atmosphere

• A mixture of gases that surrounds Earth• Contains the oxygen we need to breathe• Protects us from the sun’s damaging rays

The Composition of the AtmosphereThe atmosphere is made up mostly of nitrogen gas. Oxygen makes up a little more than 20% of the atmosphere, while nitrogen contributes 78%.

Atmospheric Pressure and TemperatureThe atmosphere is held around the Earth by gravity. Gravity pulls gas molecules in the atmosphere toward theEarth’s surface, causing air pressure.

Air pressure is the measure of the force with which the molecules push on a surface.

It is strongest at the Earth’s surface because more air is above you. As you move further away from the Earth’s surface, fewer gas molecules are above you.

As altitude increases, air pressure decreases.

Air temperature also decreases as altitude increases.

Lower parts of the atmosphere are warmer because they contain a high percentage of gases that absorb solar energy.

Layers of the Atmosphere

Page 11: SpongeBob and Patrick love to go jellyfishing. They wondered if a new brand of jellyfish bait would help them catch more jellyfish. To test their idea,

Layers of the Atmosphere

The Troposphere: The Layer in Which We Live The lowest layer of the atmosphere, which lies next to the Earth’s surface, is called the troposphere.

The Stratosphere: Home of the Ozone Layer The atmospheric layer above the troposphere is called the stratosphere.

The Mesosphere: The Middle Layer The mesosphere is the middle layer of the atmosphere. It is also the coldest layer.

The Thermosphere: The Edge of the Atmosphere The uppermost atmospheric layer is called the thermosphere.

The Ionosphere: Home of the Auroras In the upper mesosphere and the lower thermosphere, nitrogen and oxygen atoms absorb harmful solar energy, temp rises, gas particles called ions become electricallycharged. In polar areas, ionsradiate energy as auroras.

The Exosphere: the highest region of the atmosphere, where the air density is so low that a fast-moving air molecule is more than 50 percent likely to escape from the atmosphere instead of hitting other molecules.

describes each layer of Earth’s atmosphere.
