•Most live in salt water• Some live in fresh water rivers, lakes, and streams

• Babies swim through the water with flagella• Some adults get moved by being washed away by waves• Adults never move; they are sessile

• Has many body openings called pores & one central cavity

• Saltwater sponges - red, orange, yellow, or blue• Freshwater sponges - dull brown or green

• Extract food from water, pulled through its pores• Diet consists of bacteria, protists,
algae, and other materials

• Extract oxygen from the water through pores
How they get oxygen
• Release sperm into water• Sperm floats until they are drawn
into another sponge• Will also use asexual
reproduction (regeneration)
