Becs, who has worked at Surrey CCC since 2007, is heading off to Uganda in October to work at a Cricket without Boundaries (CWB) project that, as well as spreading the word of our great game, aims to spread the awareness of HIV and AIDS. CWB’s training sessions have at their heart discussion about the disease in terms of prevention, treatment and equality of treatment for those with and without the disease. CWB hope that by integrating these messages into all of their training and coaching the messages will have a long term sustainable impact in the fight against HIV/ AIDs. Speaking today, Becs said: “I’ve always wanted to do something worthwhile and challenging. I hope that by going out to Uganda I will be able to make a difference; even if it’s just to one person’s life. I thought the CWB was a great charity to do this with. “It’s something different and I like the way it uses cricket to interact and teach HIV/AIDS awareness. CWB also returns to the areas it has previously visited to ensure that the messages previously given are still being used and in order to create sustainability the charity and the Uganda Cricket Association support two local coaches to work with us during our trip.” To sponsor Becs, please either visit the Ticketing and Membership office or go to her Just Giving page at justgiving.com/Rebecca- Lockyer1. League tables don’t lie and we find ourselves at the very bottom because over the course of this season we quite simply haven’t played well enough. Throughout the summer we have won just one championship game and that wasn’t until our twelfth one and therefore we got exactly what we deserve - relegation. To have won just one game meant we had no option but to gamble with certain decisions going into the final run of matches. Whether it was the type of pitch we’ve played on at home or the declaration we had to make at Edgbaston last week, that’s the situation we’ve put ourselves in. We’re playing Division Two cricket next year and we’ve got no other option than to accept it. We obviously need to play far better and improve our overall cricket disciplines – both batting and bowling. It’s a challenge that everyone is prepared to accept and take on. Individually and collectively we all have to take responsibility. Nobody has a divine right to play in the top division and as I’ve said earlier, we got what we deserved. Looking to this last game against Yorkshire, we will prepare for this game as we would any other. We have to be professional and go about it in the right way. I promise you that the players will do that and take pride in their performances while wearing a Surrey shirt.

The search for a new coach to lead the side next season is still ongoing. We have very deliberately not set ourselves any kind of timeframe for this so we are able to secure the very best candidate for the job. When an appointment is made, the club will ensure that Members are the first people to know, so make sure you keep an eye on the club website and social media channels over the coming months. I would like to end by thanking you for your support during what has been undoubtedly a tough season. Reaching the Twenty20 Final, something we hadn’t achieved since 2004, was a small achievement but overall we accept the results have not been good enough. Whilst we have enjoyed the odd high alongside the lows – and the list of End of Season Awards at the back of this newsletter reflects that – the support of the Members is greatly appreciated by myself, the coaches and the playing staff. Best Wishes, Alec Stewart

SECOND XIThe Surrey Second XI ended their season well, with a thrilling victory over Hampshire at Wimbledon CC.

After Gary Keedy inspired Surrey to dismiss their visitors for just 139 in the first innings, Surrey posted a strong lead when 49 from captain Tom Jewell, 30 from Gary Wilson and 22 from teenage opener Olly Batchelor helped them to 212 all out in their first innings.

However, Hampshire bounced back strongly in the second innings. Young wicket keeper Michael Bates – who also captained the side – posted an unbeaten 139 and was supported by Lewis McManus’ 105 as they reached 390/8, a lead of 317.

In their final chase of the season, Surrey struggled initially – losing triallist Hamish Gardiner as well as Batchelor, Wilson, Roy and Jewell to leave them 120/5.

That brought Jack Winslade and a second triallist – Dominic Michael – to the crease and the two started to undo the early damage, with Winslade blasting a quick 24 before being dismissed, followed rapidly by Michael Burgess who went for a duck.

That left Surrey back in trouble at 170/7 but Jon Lewis came to the crease, in what was to be his final appearance for the club.

He joined Michael as the two started to play very aggressively, throwing caution to the wind as they chased the final 150 to win the match.

Michael smashed an unbeaten 125 from 112 balls, supported by Lewis’ more measured 45 from 37 as the two turned the match on its end and eventually cruised to a three wicket victory.

The victory meant Surrey finished the Second XI Championship South Group in seventh place ahead of Hampshire, Sussex and the MCC Universities with three wins, two draws and four defeats.

In the One Day Second XI Trophy – which had been concluded earlier in the summer – Surrey finished third in the South Group with five victories, three losses and one non-result from their nine games.

As previously reported, Surrey were victorious in the Second XI T20 Competition, topping the South Group, beating Gloucestershire in the semi-final and then narrowly defeating Middlesex in the final to claim the crown at the Arundel Castle Finals Day.

The Surrey Women will play in the LV= County Championship Division One next season after winning their relegation play off against Essex earlier this month.

The Women’s side, who finished bottom of the table during the eight game regular season programme, played off against second bottom Essex at Billericay CC.

The prize for the victors was to avoid relegation – whilst the losers would have to play off against Division Two Champions Lancashire for the final place in Division One next year.

After losing the toss and fielding first, Surrey picked up early wickets and had Essex in trouble at 22/4. Early highlights included an excellent slip catch from Anna Stevenson – playing her first match of the season – and a three wicket burst from seamer Katherine Robson.

Essex then mounted a steady recovery but, continuing to take regular wickets, Surrey maintained their control and eventually dismissed the home side for 193 shortly before the end of their fifty overs.

In response, Surrey got off to a solid start with fourteen-year-old Hannah Jones and Sophie Pout forming a strong opening partnership. When Jones was the first out, England T20 International Susie Rowe came to the crease.

An aggressive and innovative knock from Rowe allowed her to show her International class, forming an excellent partnership with Anna Stevenson to seize the initiative and take the score onto 170.

With just 20 needed for victory Rowe was dismissed for 92 – and when Stephenson (49) and Sarah Clarke were both run out it was up to captain Cecily Scutt and Katherine Robson to take their side home for a five wicket victory that secured their top flight status for 2014.

Surrey U15s were crowned National Champions late last month after romping to an eight wicket victory over Kent at Kibworth CC.

After losing the toss and bowling first, Surrey took two quick wickets at the start with James Culff taking both scalps.

A strong partnership between Edward Hyde (35) and Marcus O’Riordan (39) took Kent to 58/3 but Surrey maintained control when Rafeh Jafri had Hyde caught by Will Jacks.

From then on in, Surrey took regular wickets with Tom Homes in particular accounting for the Kent middle order. Only wicket keeper Kai Appleby (21) and Benjamin Earl (10) made it into double figures as the Surrey attack restricted run scoring opportunities

before eventually dismissing their opposition for 161 from 49.5 overs.

In response, Surrey opener Ryan Patel played a superb totemic innings of 63 to form the basis of the reply. After putting on 31 with fellow opener Kiran Beri (20), wicket keeper Oliver Trower was dismissed quickly to leave Surrey 41/2.

However, number Sam Curran (62*) came to the crease and played an equally important innings, partnering Patel for the rest of the game.

The two took Surrey to 164/2, with Curran playing aggressively to bring up his innings at close to a run a ball, with Surrey securing the win – and the National Championship – from just 36.5 overs.

Whilst the detailed fixture list for the 2014 summer has yet to be confirmed, the club has recently received an outline schedule giving some idea of the shape of the summer.

The LV= County Championship season will start on Sunday April 6th and the final game of the summer will start on Tuesday September 21st. The majority of Championship fixtures will start on Sundays.

The T20 season will begin on Friday May 18th and run throughout June and July. Quarter Finals will be played from the 1st to the 3rd August and Finals Day will take place on Saturday August 23rd.

Of the seven home games Surrey are due to play in the competition, we hope that five will be scheduled for a Friday evening.

The new One Day competition, played over 50 overs, is to be played in a block from July 16th to August 14th. There will be four home games and four away games and Surrey have been drawn in a group alongside Somerset, Kent, Sussex, Glamorgan, Durham, Middlesex, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. There will also be a Championship match played within this period.

The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, which will be played from August 26th to August 30th. The semi-finals will be played from September 4th to September 7th and the final will be played, at Lord’s, on Saturday September 20th.

The ground’s International schedule was recently confirmed and you should already have been told that the Kia Oval hosts the first match of the International summer, a T20 between England and Sri Lanka on Tue 20th May.

There will then be a One Day International between the same teams on 22nd May. As is tradition, the ground will then host the final Test Match of the season - against India - starting Fri 15th Aug.
