WELCOME

from Organizing Committee

Hongde Zhou (Chair) University of Guelph, Canada

Val S. Frenkel (Vice Chair) ARCADIS US, USA

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, We would like to warmly welcome you to Toronto to participate in the 7

th IWA Specialised Membrane Technology Conference and Exhibition.

Built on a series of previous successful membrane technology conferences, this event will again cover the entire range of water related membrane technology, give a platform to present results of the latest research and industrial experience, and facilitate close professional linkages among our membrane communities and water professionals. This conference is addressed to everyone concerned with fundamentals, engineering and applied aspects of membranes or associated sustainable water management. Young water professionals are particularly welcome to participate in the competition for the best poster and best presentation awards. A technological exhibition will be included as well, showcasing premier membrane technology.

We are pleased to have you here. We hope you enjoy the conference and have some time to experience the vibrant cosmopolitan life of Toronto together with the natural beauty of Canada. Together we will have another successful conference.

Welcome from

IWA MTSG Chair

Chung-Hak Lee, Seoul National University Korea

We would like to express our sincere thanks for your constant interest in the Biennial Conference of MTSG (Membrane Technology Specialist Group).

Fourteen years ago in 1999, the 1st biennial conference of MTSG was held in Tokyo, Japan.

Since then it continued at worldwide locations: Tel Aviv-Israel (2001), Seoul- Korea (2004), Herrogate-UK (2007), Beijing-China (2009), Aachen-Germany (2011). The 7

th event has

landed at Toronto-Canada to exchange various useful information about membrane technology and water environment.

All of us recognize well that it is the right time to expand Membrane Technology’s horizons through refining and upgrading its missions to solve various water problems such as water shortage: tackling throughput-limiting issues such as control of membrane fouling and development of energy saving membrane processes from the view point of computational fluid dynamics, interfacial chemistry/engineering, molecular biology, etc. We are sure that the event will contribute to the accomplishment of those missions. We would like to thank the members of Organizing and Scientific Committees for their constant efforts to make the event successful.

Keynote Speaker Tony Fane

Tony Fane is a Chemical Engineer from Imperial College, London, who has worked on membranes since 1973. His current interests are in membranes applied to environmental applications and the water cycle, with a focus on sustainability aspects of membrane technology, including desalination and reuse. He is a former Director of the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology at the University of New South Wales and Head of Chemical Engineering at UNSW. Since 2002 he has directed membrane research in Singapore as Temasek Professor (2002-2006) at Nanyang Technological University, then since 2008 as Founding Director of the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre (SMTC) at NTU. He is now Director-Mentor at SMTC. The SMTC has a group of over 85 researchers dedicated to fundamental and applied research into membranes for the water cycle. He is on the Advisory Board of the Journal of Membrane Science (former editor from 1992 to 2005) and Editorial Board of Desalination. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Technological Science & Engineering and the Patron of the Membrane Society of Australasia.

Keynote Speaker Pierre Côté

Pierre Côté studied Civil Engineering at l’Ecole Polytechnique (Montreal) and obtained a Ph.D. from McMaster University (Hamilton) in 1986 for a thesis on hazardous waste stabilization. In 1989, he joined Zenon Environmental Inc. to develop membrane-based products and processes where he initiated the development of ZeeWeed®. Dr Côté currently works as a consultant and advisor with a number of companies in water treatment. Over the 30 years of his R&D career, Dr Côté has authored some 100 technical publications and obtained more than 77 patents related to membranes and membrane processes. He led a team that won a French Academy of Science prize for a project on nanofiltration in 1995. In 2000, Dr Côté won the $100,000 Manning Principal Award for the ZeeWeed® technology; the award was shared with co-workers and all Zenon employees. In 2011 he won the L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Alumni Award from McMaster University.
