My name is Jomo Tariku, an African American industrial designer who is on the verge of a breakthrough setting a new global trend in contemporary African furniture design. My idea for this grew out of my design thesis (in 1993) at the University of Kansas, Art and Design program where I developed and defended my African inspired furniture concepts. Since then, I have continuously refined and added to my design portfolio while simultaneously pushing the concept into the mainstream design world.
My furniture incorporates a deep appreciation for African art and culture and infuses my heritage into contemporary product designs such as chairs, tables, pendants and interior designs to offer an alternative to current styles and trends. I believe the market is ripe for disruption as current popu-lar trends are spin offs off Scandinavian and Italian masters from more than 50 years ago.
After persistently refining my craft over the last 20 years, I am finally attracting a sustained interest from curators, design shows and the global design community. Last October, my chairs and stools at Downtown Design Dubai attracted significant traffic from designers, editors and jour-nalists (See included media package). As a result, I have received invitations to participate at other curated shows sponsored by Financial Times and Wallpaper magazine in Ghana (March 2017) and the ICFF - International Con-temporary Design Fair in New York (May 2017).
The pinnacle of my achievement was though receiving an invitation to be part of he world renown Venice Bien-nale, Venice Design 2017 at Palazzo Michel (from 11th May until 26 November 2017) and the approval of my Birth Chair II installation proposal. (See attached invita-tion letter)
As you might expect shows like Venice Biennale can only materialize through support of art and design lovers, sponsors and supporters who believe my body of work needs the exposure on the international stage.
