DEAR URBAN LEAGUE FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS:

As we continue to follow the guidance of our officials and prioritize the health and safety of our communities, the Urban League of Louisiana has re-imagined our annual Gala as a live-virtual experience. In our continuing promise to pivot and not pause, we forge ahead during these unprecedented times to serve the communities who need us the most. We invite you to join us in the virtual celebration of the Urban League’s Annual Gala, one of the largest and most recognizable fundraisers in New Orleans, on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2020.

This unique live-virtual experience will feature live music, inspiring programming and a wealth of entertainment, all in support of our 80 plus year legacy of empowering communities and changing lives. Urban League's programs focus on early childhood education, college and career readiness, workforce and economic development, educational leadership, parent engagement initiatives, policy, advocacy and social justice.

OUR MISSIONThe mission of the Urban League of Louisiana is to assist African Americans and other communities seeking equity to secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights.

OUR MOVEMENTCelebrating over 80 years of service, the Urban League of Louisiana works to enable African-Americans and other communities seeking equity to secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights. Programs of the Urban League's three Centers of Excellence are focused in the areas of education and youth development, workforce and economic development and public policy, advocacy and social justice. The strength of “the Movement” has been the identification of equality gaps in the African American community and the League’s ability to design and deliver vital programs and policy initiatives to bridge these barriers.

Throughout our history, Urban League programs have been focused to ensure quality education and access to information, equal employment, entrepreneurial opportunities, economic inclusion opportunities and shared dignity under the law. The Urban League believes the opportunities that emerge from closing these gaps will benefit business, industry, and the greater community, and create a sustainable and dynamic future for everyone. With our tradition of success coupled with support from every sector of the community, the Urban League is destined to remain the leading entity for social and economic equality as the new century continues to unfold.

In 2019, the Urban League has served more than 10,000 citizens through an array of advocacy and direct service programs housed within our Center of Education and Youth Development, Center of Workforce and Economic Development, and our Center of Policy and Social Justice. These important programs include Urban League Head Start; Project Ready; Parent Information Center; Education Empowerment Program; Office of Workforce Development; the Women’s Business Resource Center and Entrepreneurship Center; and Policy and Social Justice Initiatives.

OUR PIVOTWhen our state went into Phase 1 of lockdown due to Covid-19, we asked ourselves a different sort of question: What’s the MOST we can do?

To date, we have diligently and continuously asked ourselves this question as the pandemic sweeps through every aspect of our lives. We worked to quickly pivot, meeting people where they are and adjusting our strategies to be effective in this new normal. Since March, we have offered a variety of assistance and services including Virtual Job Fairs, Small Business and Entrepreneurship webinars and classes, Tele-Town Halls to discuss timely and pressing topics including how the pandemic is disproportionately affecting African Americans and police reform in the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. We have adapted our offerings to serve parents and headstart children, provided free masks to community members who need them, and activated our Wake Up Geaux Vote campaign for election season.

Though our state is no stranger to tragedies of incredible magnitude, nothing could have prepared us for this. And yet, we know we must press on and so we continue to pivot and not pause.
