AGENCIES – BARCELONA A fired-up Lionel Messi led Barcelona to a 3-1 win at home to Napoli yesterday for a 4-2 aggregate victory which took the club into the Champions League quarter-finals for the 13th consecutive season where they face Bayern Munich. The Catalans had a shaky start but took the lead in the 10th minute with a powerful header from a corner by Clement Lenglet before Messi scored a superb second in the 23rd, seeing off four defenders to curl the ball into the far bottom corner. Messi had the ball in the net again soon after following a superb team move but the goal was harshly ruled out for handball by the Argentine fol- lowing a VAR review, although Messi later won a penalty which Luis Suarez converted for Barca's third. Napoli got one back when Lorenzo Insigne converted a spot kick at the end of the first half and were the better side after the interval but Barca sur- vived to set up a mouth- watering clash with Bayern in the Final Eight tournament in Lisbon next Friday. Bayern Munich cruised past Chelsea 4-1 yesterday to reach the quarter-finals with a 7-1 aggregate victory and remain on course for a treble of titles after Robert Lewandowski scored a double. The Bavarians, who won the domestic league and Cup double, quickly killed off the tie with a ninth minute Lewandowski penalty, after having won 3-0 in London in the first leg in February. Bayern will be on an 18-game winning streak across all competitions as they head into next week’s Final Eight tournament in Lisbon. Polish striker Lewandowski, with 53 goals in 44 matches in all competitions this season, turned provider to set up Ivan Perisic in the 24th minute as the hosts showed no lack of fitness despite a five-week gap since their last competitive game. Chelsea, who conceded seven goals in a two-legged European tie for the first time, got onto the scoresheet with Tammy Abraham’s tap-in from a Manuel Neuer pass a minute before the break. Bayern sub- stitute Corentin Tolisso restored their two-goal lead in the 76th and Lewandowski headed in his second eight minutes later to make it 13 goals in the Cham- pions League this season. Meanwhile, Former Italy and Juventus star Andrea Pirlo was appointed the Italian champions' new coach, a day after the Italian giants crashed out of the Cham- pions League in the last 16 to French club Lyon. Sarri, 61, leaves Juventus after just one season. The 41-year-old Pirlo, with no previous top-level coaching experience, recently took over the Juventus U23 side and arrives on a two-year contract. At QEF’s Indoor Arena, the 10th round of the popular series was successfully completed yesterday after a break of more than four months because of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the world. “I take this opportunity to thank all those who put in great efforts to get the season restarted,” Al Darwish said yesterday. “I thank the riders, the ref- erees, the technical staff and members of the media covering the 10th round,” he added. “We were keen to resume the incomplete season and I am glad to see everything moving ahead successfully. “The organising committee teams took exceptional care in putting everything together. Tabata strikes as Al Sadd edge Al Duhail FAWAD HUSSAIN THE PENINSULA Rodrigo Tabata scored the all- important goal as Al Sadd defeated Al Duhail 1-0 in a thrilling QNB Stars League (QSL) match at Al Sadd Stadium, yesterday. While the result did not change the positions on top of points standings, it may play a big role in deciding the QSL champions during the last two rounds. Following the defeat, Al Duhail, who are leading the standings with 46 points, saw their lead over Al Rayyan cut to just one point, while defending champions Al Sadd also kept their mathematical chance of retaining the title alive, with the crucial win. The 24th minute strike, which gave Al Sadd their third consecutive victory following league’s resumption, was Tabata’s first goal for his new team. Top Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb also played a key role in Al Sadd’s victory with several outstanding saves in the second half. It was an observing battle, which was dominated by Al Sadd by showing a balanced performance in both defence and attack. Ahead of the kick off of the highly-anticipated tie, both teams showed solidarity with Lebanese people with captains displaying their national flag during the opening ceremony as part of Qatar's ‘Lebanon in Our Hearts’ campaign. Meanwhile, Al Duhail’s Han Kwang Song took first shot on target within seconds of kick off as match got off to a fast start, with Al Duhail holding a slight edge in the first 15 minutes. Both teams fought to take control of the game early with maximum ball possession. Al Sadd gained momentum and won their first corner in 19 minute before Tabata put them ahead with an all-important goal. The veteran was on target from a close range off an assist from striker Baghdad Boundejah, who got a rebound from Al Duhail goalkeeper Mohammed Ahmed, trying to block a fine hit by captain Hassan Al Haydos. The goal gathered more pace as Al Duhail took an aggressive approach. But, it was Al Sadd, who came close to scoring their second goal but Boundejah’s hit just missed the target. Al Duhail striker Almoez Ali’s attempt on a header was a little high in 44th minute as Al Sadd went into the half-time with an advantage. The second half brought more thrilling action with both teams exchanging attacks, and referee Abdulrahman Ibrahim Al Jassim had to caution Al Sadd’s Abdulkarim Hassan at one stage. Al Sheeb kept Al Sadd lead intact by blocking a header from Mohamed Muntari in 59th minute, and two minutes later he again made a fine save by stopping Song, who sprinted inside the circle, with only goal- keeper to beat. The Qatari goalkeeper made few more saves as Al Duhail continued to attack in search of a leveler. They were unlucky in 87th- minute when Paulo Edmilson’s hit struck the top bar. Al Duhail, bringing fresh players to return in the tie, con- tinued to push for a goal late in the match but Al Sadd were solid in their defence yesterday, defying all attacks to take sweet revenge of their loss in the first leg. Earlier yesterday, Umm Salal and Al Ahli played out a 1-1 draw at the Al Janoub Stadium. Rasul Bezerra’s goal in the 45th minute gave the lead for Umm Salal against Al Ahli, who were helped by an own goal by The Orange Fortress’ Rami Fayez in the 72nd minute. Bottas pips Hamilton to 70th Anniversary GP pole

REUTERS – SILVERSTONE

Valtteri Bottas pipped championship-leading Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to pole position for Formula One's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone yesterday with Nico Hulkenberg qualifying a stunning third for Racing Point.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen joined the experienced German on the second row.

Bottas's 13th career pole, and first since the Austrian season-opener last month, ended six-times world champion Hamilton's bid for a fourth in a row and second at home on successive weekends.

It also ensured a reversal of last Sun-day's British Grand Prix grid, held behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pan-demic, which Hamilton took his 91st pole and won despite a last lap puncture.

"Things are going to be a bit different to last weekend in terms of the strategy," said Bottas, who beat Hamilton by 0.063 seconds with a last flying lap on a hot afternoon.

"My expectations for tomorrow are nothing more than to win the race."

Pirelli have brought softer tyre com-pounds for Sunday's race, meaning teams should have to do two stops rather than risking excessive wear as they did last weekend.

The front row lockout was a record-extending 67th for Mercedes, who have taken every pole so far this season and won four out of four.

Hamilton congratulated the Finn on ending his own run of three in a row.

"Valtteri did a fantastic job today. Just a bit too quick for me," said the Briton, who leads his team mate by 30 points and looks set to equal Michael Schumacher's record of 155 podiums on Sunday.

"Ultimately he did a better job."Australian Daniel Ricciardo qual-

ified fifth for Renault, with Canadian Lance Stroll sixth for Racing Point.

Charles Leclerc was the highest-placed Ferrari driver in eighth, with his four-times world champion team mate Sebastian Vettel failing to make the top 10 session and qualifying only 12th.

Vettel will start 11th, however, after Renault's Esteban Ocon was handed a three place drop for impeding Williams' George Russell.

REUTERS – BRNO, CZECH REPUBLIC

Johann Zarco claimed a first MotoGP pole position for Avintia Ducati at the Czech Republic Grand Prix in Brno yesterday, edging fellow Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, who crashed on his final lap.

Zarco produced a blis-tering lap of one minute 55.687 seconds, which was enough to ensure he was 0.303 seconds faster than championship leader Quar-tararo on the Petronas Yamaha.

“I can’t believe I got to pole,” Zarco said. “Now I need to use this good position to start well tomorrow.

“The pace is still not the best to hope for a victory but I will continue to learn more about my bike and improve myself (this season).” Quar-tararo tried to claw back the top spot for a fifth consecutive pole but crashed on the penul-timate corner on his final effort.

The 21-year-old Quar-tararo was awarded a front-row spot after KTM’s Pol Espargaro best effort was scrapped for breaking yellow flag rules.

“At the end of the day, it was really important to finish on the front row,” Quartararo said. “I felt I was at the limit and braked way too late in the second-last corner.

“But I’m really happy today as we improved our pace through the final practice round.” Petronas Yamaha’s Franco Morbidelli clinched the final front-row spot on the grid, while Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro finished fourth.

Valentino Rossi’s bid to become the first rider to record 200 premier class podiums suffered a blow after his Yamaha finished 10th

fastest, while Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso failed to make through Q1 and finished 18th.

Quartararo leads the championship standings with 50 points and will look to extend his 10-point lead over Yamaha’s Maverick Vinales, who will start fifth on the grid.

World champion Marc Marquez is unavailable this weekend after undergoing a second operation on a broken arm.

The Spaniard underwent a fresh procedure this week to replace a damaged titanium plate inserted after he broke his right arm in the July 19 season-opening race in Spain.

In the absence of Marquez, Repsol Honda have Stefan Bradl and Alex Marquez starting at the very back of the grid.

Celtics rip Raptors as Nets and Magic grab NBA play-off spotsAFP – MIAMI

Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum powered the Boston Celtics to a 122-100 rout of defending NBA champion Toronto on Friday, keeping the Raptors from clinching the Eastern Conference second seed.

Brown scored 20 points, Tatum added 18 and Kemba Walker added 17 for the Celtics (46-23), who pulled within 3.5 games of second-place Toronto and three ahead of fourth-place Miami.

“We’re getting there,” Tatum said. “I don’t want to put a cap on it, say where our ceiling is, but we’re improving every day and we don’t want to stop.”

The Celtics, who boasted seven double-figure scorers, never trailed against the NBA’s second-best defensive squad, jumping ahead 52-37 at

halftime and outscoring the Raptors 39-20 in the third quarter.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise when your offense is dialed in like that,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. Fred VanVleet led Toronto with only 13 points, but the Celtics and Raptors could face each other in the second round of the playoffs and both sides know it could be much different.

“They are a good team,” Tatum said. “We’ll probably see them again.” The Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic clinched the last two berths in the East playoffs in different fashions.

Brooklyn, led by 22 points from Caris LeVert and 21 from Joe Harris, routed Sacramento 119-106. The Nets (33-36) ensured ninth-place Wash-ington could not pull within four games to force a play-in series under NBA restart rules.

Orlando (32-38) had a chance to win and seal a berth but the Philadelphia 76ers rallied in the second half to beat the Magic 108-101.

Instead, the Magic reached the playoffs when Washington lost to New Orleans 118-107, leaving the Wizards (24-45) the only winless bubble team and too far back to threaten Orlando.

Cameroonian star Joel Embiid had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the 76ers while Tobias Harris added 23 points and 15 rebounds, Al Horford scored 21 and reserve Alec Burks contributed 22.

The Magic began the fourth quarter with a 3-for-17 shooting slump from the floor and the 76ers, missing Australian star Ben Simmons due to a left knee injury, went on a 9-1 run over 4:30 for a 97-87 edge to seal it.

China's Li grabs two-stroke lead at PGA Championship

REUTERS – SAN FRANCISCO

China's Li Haotong may not have been on anyone's radar ahead of this week's PGA Championship but he thrust himself into the mix with a bogey-free trip around TPC Harding Park on Friday to grab the second-round lead at the year's first major.

Li, whose best finish in 2020 is a share of 18th place at the European Tour's Oman Open in February, carded a five-under-par 65 in calm winds to reach eight under for the week, two shots clear of six players including two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka (68).

"I didn't even think I could play like this week," said Li, who missed the cut at the Memorial Tour-nament in July and finished in a share of 75th place at last week's World Golf Championships event in Memphis.

Li, in search of a maiden PGA Tour win, made a fast start to his second round with birdies at three of his first five holes, including a 22-footer at the par-four second, and then added another pair at the ninth and 10th holes.

Koepka was bothered by tightness in his hip that required attention from a trainer but birdied the dif-ficult par-four 18th to finish with a 68 to sit six-under through 36 holes.

Overnight co-leader Jason Day (69) was tied with Li before disaster struck on the par-4 12th when the Australian's tee-shot found the rough and he missed a putt for a double bogey.

Woakes and Buttler lead England to stunning winAFP — MANCHESTER

Chris Woakes hit an unbeaten 84 as England came from behind to beat Pakistan in the first Test at Old Trafford yesterday.

England were struggling in pursuit of a victory target of 277 after collapsing to 117-5 on the fourth day.

But Woakes, who had helped drag England back into the match with 2-11 in just five overs late on Friday, and fellow World Cup-winner Jos Buttler turned the tide with a stand of 139.

Nevertheless, with just 21 more runs needed, Buttler was lbw for 75 after trying to reverse-sweep leg-spinner Yasir Shah.

The batsman reviewed but all to no avail, with England now 256-6.

By the time Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi took the new ball, England needed just 13 more runs to win at a sun-drenched Old Trafford.

But there was still time for England to lose their seventh wicket when, with four more needed, Stuart Broad was plumb lbw on the sweep to Yasir.

Woakes, however, finished the match with an edged boundary off Afridi down to the third man rope as England went 1-0 up in a three-match campaign.

Victory meant England had won an opening Test for the first time in six series.

Defeat was tough on Yasir, who took eight wickets in the match.

Wicketkeeper Buttler had a poor game in the field, twice missing Shan Masood on 45 during the Pakistan opener’s 156 that was instrumental in leaving England with a first-innings deficit of over a hundred runs.

But whether it was cover-driving leg-spinner Shadab Khan or pulling teenage paceman Naseem Shah for another boundary, Buttler put the pressure back on Pakistan.

Buttler’s fifty came off just 55 balls, with seven fours, with Woakes no slouch in a 59-ball

fifty he completed by cover-driving Naseem for the eighth boundary of his innings.

It was Woakes’s highest Test score since his hundred against India two years ago.

Although Woakes is known to be vulnerable to the short ball, Pakistan did not pitch short to the all-rounder until he was well set.

Only twice has a team chased more than 200 to win in the fourth innings of a Test at Old Trafford, with England making 294-4 against New Zealand in 2008 and 231-3 against the West Indies in 2004.

Earlier, England lost four

wickets for 31 runs in slipping to 117-5, with captain Joe Root and Ben Stokes both falling in the collapse.

The slump started when Dom Sibley (36) edged a drive off Yasir to slip.

Root made 42 before he nicked Naseem to Babar Azam in the slips.

Stokes had guided England to an astounding one-wicket win over Australia from a seemingly hopeless position with a brilliant century in the third Ashes Test last year.

But there was no repeat of his Headingley heroics yesterday when he fell for just nine, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, impressive behind the stumps throughout this match, holding an excellent catch after Stokes got a thin glove to a Yasir googly that bounced.

Ollie Pope then received a brute of a delivery from Afridi that leapt off a length, the ball ballooning to Shadab as he ran forward from gully.

Pakistan had resumed on 137-8, a lead of 244.

Yasir led a tailend rally that saw 32 runs added in just 16 balls before his team were dis-missed for 169 in their second innings.

Yasir struck a quickfire 33 off 24 balls but, in the end, it was not enough to compensate for Pakistan losing four wickets late on Friday.

‘This defeat is on me,’ says Varane as errors send Real Madrid outAFP — MANCHESTER

French defender Raphael Varane insisted on facing up to his two mistakes that helped Manchester City knock his Real Madrid side out of the Champions League on Friday and admitted: “This is on me. I failed.”

City won 2-1 on the night for a 4-2 aggregate victory to reach the quarter-finals where they will face Lyon.

They capitalised on two shocking mistakes by Varane to get their goals, with Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus scoring either side of a Karim Benzema strike for the visitors in this last 16 second leg, played at an empty Etihad Stadium.

Varane was dispossessed inside the box in the ninth minute allowing Sterling to put City ahead, and his poor headed backpass attempt gifted Jesus another goal midway through the second half.

“I want to stand up because in my eyes, this defeat is on me. I have to take responsibility for it,” admitted Varane. “I am sad for my team-mates, for their efforts. I have to take my responsibility in the defeat, mistakes cost dearly at this level of competition.”

The 27-year-old French national captain added: “We gave everything on the pitch but sometimes you can fail."

‘Maestro to Mister’: Italy's legend Pirlo replaces Sarri as Juventus coach

AFP — MILAN

Former Italy and Juventus star Andrea Pirlo was yesterday named as the Italian champions’ new coach, just hours after Maurizio Sarri’s sacking.

Sarri, 61, leaves Juventus after just one season, a day after the Turin giants crashed out of the Champions League in the last 16 to French club Lyon.

The 41-year-old Pirlo, who has no previous top-level coaching experience, has signed a two-year contract until June 2022.

He had recently been appointed coach of the Juventus U23 side, who

play in the third division.“Pirlo has had a leg-

endary career as a player, winning everything from the Champions League to the World Cup in 2006,” Juventus said.

“In his four years at the centre of the Juventus midfield, Pirlo won as many league titles, a Coppa Italia and two Italian Super Cups.

“Today, begins a new chapter of his career in the world of football, as it was said almost a week ago: from Maestro to Mister.

“From today he will be the coach for everyone at Juventus, as the club has decided to entrust him with the technical

leadership of the first team, after having already selected him for Juventus Under 23.

“Today’s choice is based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and tal-ented squad to pursue new successes.”

Pirlo began his playing career at his hometown team Brescia in 1995 and went on to play for Inter, AC Milan and Juve from 2011 before moving in 2015 for two seasons with New York City FC in the MLS.

During his four seasons with Juventus he won Serie A four times and

one Italian Cup. Capped 116 times for Italy, Pirlo was a key figure in the team that won the 2006 World Cup.

He also won two Champions Leagues and two league titles with Milan during his 22-year playing career.
