the concept for Sport contracting was developed because sport facility construction, whether indoor or outdoor, presents many unique challenges when conventional construction procedures are applied. this is in large part because the finishing work in a sport facility is not merely aesthetic, as it tends to be in other types of construction, rather it is the single most important aspect of the facility itself and critical to the long term success of a facility.

Some examples of this finishing work include sport surfacing, seating, sports equipment and communications equipment. these specialty elements of a sport facility are crucial to facility users and operators because of the highly intensive manner in which they interact with these areas.

So the concept for Sport contracting arose from listening to building operators, athletes and program coordinators who all emphasized that the long term success of their facilities were dependent on this highly specialized finishing work in their facility. Yet, they often felt that project design and contracting practices did not adequately prioritize this fact and it was impacting the overall effectiveness of their facility once the project was complete.

Seeing this theme consistently emerge, it was clear there was a need for comprehensive project guidance. While traditional contracting companies are highly specialized in managing construction budgets & schedules and design firms provide expertise in the general aspects of facility design, there is a lack of specialized expertise as to what it actually takes to build a successful sports facility, in terms of functionality, efficiency and profitability. Thus we developed our Sport Contracting Program.

Located on the banks of the Fraser River in Richmond, BC, the Richmond Olympic Oval was first constructed in 2008 as the future home for speed skating events at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Games. A major component of the project was to maximize the use of the facility for the community before and after the games. To meet this demand Centaur was contracted to supply and install a hardwood sports flooring system for the inner part of the oval prior to the games. Following the 2010 Winter Olympics, Centaur played a major role in the legacy phase of the project by supplying and constructing sports surfaces as well as providing scoreboards and sports equipment for the facility. This massive undertaking included 73,000 square feet of spike-proof synthetic sports flooring, over 42,000 square feet hardwood sports flooring, rubber flooring and sports equipment.

bc placeLocated in the heart of downtown Vancouver, BC, BC Place is the premier stadium sporting venue on the west coast. Centaur played an important role in the design, supply and installation of the new synthetic turf surface. The surface would need to be suitable for both professional football, professional soccer and International rugby competition. Centaur installed a new synthetic turf surface that has passed FIFA Quality Pro and World Rugby testing. The highest standards for synthetic turf. In addition, Centaur supplied a new state-of-the-art turf cover for the facility. The new cover is the strongest on the market and dramatically reduces conversion between sporting and non-sporting events.

saville community sports centreCentaur played a major role in the construction of this facility by supplying and installing over 130,000 sq.ft. of hardwood sports flooring consisting 9 NBA-sized basketball courts, 9 full-size volleyball courts, a 22,000 sq. ft. gymnastics centre and multiple meeting and party rooms. The facility is now one of the largest hardwood floor facilities in all of North America. In addition to the hardwood surfacing, Centaur supplied and installed 36 ceiling-folding basketball backstops, 9 divider curtains and provided a full scoreboard package complete with shot clocks, time of day clocks, scorer’s tables and a 2,500 seat telescopic seating system in the Competition Gym. This Centre is now home of the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas volleyball and basketball teams.

Centaur has a long history with Saint Francis Xavier and when the institution was awarded to host the 2018 Special Olympics, Centaur worked with the University to expand the stadium seating capacity at Oland Stadium with the installation of a new grandstand bleacher. The seating capacity was expanded to over 4,000 for the stadium, including over 500 chairs to go along with the aluminum bench seating.

Gryphon Soccer Complex, University of Guelph - Guelph, ON

Located in Aurora, ON, St. Andrew’s College is one of Canada’s premier academic and athletic institutions. Centaur worked with the school to provide a synthetic turf system complete with environmentally-friendly infill and a Poly-Shock Pad. The project also involved the installation of a PUR running track surrounding the field as well as scoreboards, some seating and sports equipment. This is now one of the premier High School athletic facilities in Canada.

st. andrew’s college

Brentwood College is situated in Mill Bay, BC, on Vancouver Island. Centaur worked with the team at Brentwood to assist with the design and planning of the new sports facility. The main gymnasium consists of 21,500 sf of hardwood flooring, scoreboards, telescopic bleachers, divider curtains, basketball equipment as well as volleyball and badminton equipment. In addition to the main gym, Centaur also installed 10,000 sf of synthetic sports flooring in a custom black colour for weight lifting and fitness rooms. Centaur also supplied artificial turf for the fitness room and constructed squash courts for the building. The facility is now one of the best of any high school in Canada.

greencourtGreencourt is a fully enclosed, free-standing, mini soccer pitch featuring dasher boards, built-in goals, protective netting and the option for an artificial turf surface. It can be set up on any flat surface, including, parking lots, parks, plazas and even unused tennis courts. The entire set up or take down takes less than 1 day so it can be used for a weekend pop-up 5v5 or 3v3 tournament or it can be permanently placed at a location long-term.
