Today we’re going to learn about some of the most popular sports in the United Kingdom.

FootballProbably the most popular sport in

the UK is football.

There are leagues in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland but English football is probably the most famous.

Football in Scotland

Supporters of the Scottish national football team are known as the “Tartan Army.”

Scotland’s first game was in 1872, against England. It finished in a 0-0 draw.

Gretna have been relegated from the SPL and St. Johnstone are currently playing in this league.

Rugby

WimbledonThe most important event in the UK tennis calendar is Wimbledon, which happens every year in June in Wimbledon, south-west London.

GolfScotland is regarded as the home of golf. There are over 400 golf courses in Scotland alone. The most important golf course in Scotland is the Old Course in St. Andrews, near Dundee.

Cricket

England’s national sport is cricket. Lords Cricket Ground, owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club is known as the home of cricket.

The London Marathon

This event is held every year in April. As if running 26.2 miles wasn’t enough, a lot of people run the race in funny costumes!

The Grand National

Horseracing is often called the ‘sport of kings’ and takes place throughout the year. The most important event in the UK is the Grand National, but a lot of people think it is cruel for the horses as horses often die during the race.

London 2012 / Glasgow 2014

Two huge sporting events are being held very soon in the UK. This summer the Olympics are being held in London and in 2014 the Commonweath Games are coming to Glasgow.
