As we enter our 21st year, I am pleased to share with you not only the achievements of the past year, but also to celebrate our journey to reach this milestone.

Reflecting on last year I am so proud of the way in which our pupils and teachers rose to the challenges it presented. The school community demonstrated remarkable resilience and creativity as we transitioned seamlessly to online teaching and learning. I am particularly proud of our Year 11 pupils who have much to celebrate with 57% of their grades being 9-7 and 99% at 9-4. These grades were carefully moderated by us and we believe reflect what they would have achieved had they sat their actual examinations. A high percentage of 9-7 grades was achieved in many subjects including: French, Art & Music 100%, History 86%, Geography 80%, Spanish 78%, English Language 61%, Chemistry 60% and Maths 50%. The wide range of subjects we offer enables pupils to become well-rounded individuals with a good understanding of the world and a strong grasp of skills increasingly demanded for employability: creativity, communication and problem solving.Looking forward during this extraordinary time, I am convinced that young people deserve a vibrant school, a community of stability and hope. Reflecting on these individual achievements indicates for me that Thames is just that. Stephen Holsgrove Head

tanzania 2019

In October 2019 a team of 20 Year 10 and 11 pupils travelled to Musoma, Tanzania, to work with the charity Go MAD. Pupils saw seriously contaminated water sources from which villagers drink. They helped to build three water tanks, each to be used to capture rainwater for a family. The team also built six goat sheds and provided milk goats for families with little income. Each goat will generate an annual income of £200. As well as funding the water tanks and goat sheds, the team also funded a malaria education day at a primary school and gave out 300 mosquito nets. Go MAD is also working with local farmers to plant 20,000 trees. As part of this reforestation initiative, some pupils flew a drone to map the area.

In March Team Tanzania raised £12,300 at an auction dinner, funding projects for the 2021 Thames team visit. At our annual sponsored XC, pupils raised £8,800, divided between Go MAD and A21 Campaign who work to abolish human trafficking.

We took advantage of our Google IT platform moving our learning environment online the day lockdown started. The whole curriculum was broadcast live to pupils in their homes, including tutor times, assemblies, practical subjects such as art, live PE sessions and one to one support lessons. Parent feedback was incredibly positive: children were engaged, motivated and connected to each other and their teachers at a difficult and isolating time. lockdown opened up many innovative opportunities:

Biju Thampy, founder of Vision Rescue, joined an assembly live from Mumbai, discussing his work in the slums bringing education and healthcare to thousands of children. He inspired pupils not to take their education for granted.

Tony Jarrett, former Olympic hurdler & Commonwealth Gold medal winner, spoke about making the most of your potential by setting clear goals and running your own race.

Year 9 enjoyed live cookery classes, creating some healthy recipes and learning good hygiene and safe knife skills.

In Thames’ first photography competition, pupils were invited to submit images inspired by lockdown. Third was Matilda, Year 7, second, Cecilia, Year 8, and joint first were Tsion, Year 10, and Freya, Year 8.
