From Stubbs to Munnings: An exhibition of three hundred years of British Sporting Art In June, London based gallery Dickinson will hold an exhibition of over 40 Sporting pictures, including some outstanding pictures on loan from private collections that are rarely seen in public. Selected pictures in the exhibition will be for sale. Sculpture and Silver will also be in- cluded. The exhibition will cover 300 years of British Sporting Art and will include works by some of the finest Sporting artists of this period including George Stubbs, John Frederick Herring Snr., James Pollard, Henry Alken, John Wootton, James Ward, George Morland, Sir Edwin Landseer, John Ferneley and Sir Alfred Munnings. While the majority of the pictures included will be oil paintings, some selected works on paper will also exhibited. Selected Sculpture will feature in the exhibition, including works by Herbert Haseltine, and Silver by Patrick Mavros. The focus of the exhibition will be on hunting, shooting, stalking and racing, although other sporting subjects including fishing, dogs and African wildlife will also be included. The exhibition will run throughout June and is timed to coincide with The Derby and Royal As- cot race meetings, and the Olympia International Art and Antiques fair and the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques fair. The exhibition is supported by the British Sporting Art Trust. Included in the exhibition is A Lion and Lioness by George Stubbs (Liverpool 1724 – 1806 Lon- don). A newly discovered work, and a fascinating collaboration between Stubbs and the legen- dary English potter, Josiah Wedgewood (1730-1795). Further included are Sir Edwin Landseer’s Deer Fallen from a precipice and Deer just shot. Rare among the artists oeuvre as pairs, they exemplify Landseers technical abilities as the leading Victorian Sporting painter. Andrew Berke- ley Drummond mounted on Butcher at Cadland by John Ferneley (1782-1860) is one of the art- ist’s great masterpieces, and was exhibited in The Treasure Houses of Britain Exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1985-6. Further included are pictures by John Wootton, John Frederick Herring, Snr., Ben Marshall, John Emms, Thomas Rowlandson, William Shayer, Benjamin Killingbeck, Abel Hold, John Nost Sartorius, William Woodhouse, Sir Francis Grant, and many others.
