“I have enjoyed playing
football throughout my time at Wales and in particular in the Sixth Form. As a direct result
I have now been selected to play for South Yorkshire
schools U18’s.”
“The opportunities at school have allowed me to develop
my skills as a gymnastics performer and also develop
my skills as a gymnastics coach working with the
younger students.”
“The chance to play basketball at dinner
times really gives me the chance to relax in
between lessons. It is fantastic.”
PRESS RELEASE
England Hockey is delighted to inform you that Georgia Crowther has been selected onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme including the National Age Group Squad (NAGS) Academy. The AASE and NAGS Academy Programme for selected Year 12 hockey athletes is led by the Performance Department at England Hockey. It is our aim to ensure that hockey’s performance athletes of the future are supported, motivated and inspired to maximise their talent development and potential. This is a partnership approach that has the potential to deliver a major step change for both the athletes and England Hockey. We are excited by the prospect of a much bigger and more developed pool of talent to build our England teams for the future. The NAGS Academy programme will run for 12 months.

HEADTEACHERS’ RUGBY CHALLENGE Lower Sixth v Upper Sixth
Once a year Sixth Form students compete in a charity fundraising match to win the
prized Headteachers’ Trophy.
SPORTS AWARD EVENING The annual Wales High School Sports Award Evening celebrates the commitment and successes of our
students across a variety of sports, either when participating in school, or as a member of a local club, a
regional team or indeed, in some cases, national selection.
For the first time, the Physical Education Department moved the evening from school to the New York
Stadium, home to Rotherham United, which proved to be a very exciting venue for the 400, or so, students
who attended. With over 60 students receiving awards, the major Sixth form winners were:
Senior Sports Women: Georgia Crowther
Senior Sportsman of the Year: Alex Elian
Jim White Trophy for Cricket: Luke Hall
Sports Person of the Year: Beth Taylor
Maggie Senior Award for Sporting Endeavour: Ruth Archer
Headteachers’ Award: Genevieve Justice
“I am really looking forward to another positive, productive and successful sporting year here at Wales. This
annual event is the icing on the cake that enables us to celebrate the huge achievements of our pupils in all
sports across the school.”
Mr Riches, Director of Sport
SPORTS LEADERSHIP AWARD
“Sports Leadership in school involves working with younger students from primary schools in the
local area to run inter-school tournaments. This usually involves teams from all of our feeder-
schools. Leading a warm up, explaining rules, simple coaching and officiating games are common
tasks, with communication skills, motivational skills and enthusiasm all being essential for the role.
Sports Leadership in Y10 gave me the skills needed to lead a group of younger students in sporting
activities. Being named 'Sports Leader of the Year 2013" gave me the confidence I needed, and two
years later, I have worked for coaching badges in 3 different sports; cricket, tennis and field hockey.
I am now considering a career in sport coaching. My whole future stemmed from the confidence and
patience that the PE staff displayed and their eagerness to work with me to achieve my goals.”
Adam Blackwell
“The Sports Leaders course has helped me to
increase my confidence when talking in front of
younger students. I have worked with students of
all abilities and have had to learn to adapt the way
in which I lead the sessions depending on the
students in the session. My aim is to be a PE
teacher one day and I have enjoyed working
alongside my PE teachers at Wales.”
Ruth Archer
On Friday 13th November 2015, in order to raise money for Children in Need, the PE department
helped to raise money by having a "Challenge the Teacher" event. The teachers that were
involved in the event included Mr Oldale, Mr Bembridge and Miss Middleton, and students were
able to compete in Badminton doubles matches against their teachers.
In total, the department raised £154.06 for Children in Need.
Skiing Success “During the spring of 2015, I competed in the Austrian championships which were also the British
championships. The course seemed very scary to me; I'd never done anything like it before. On Saturday it
was the duals and I qualified 6th, behind my team mate who came 5th (out of 8), but we both lost our races,
so I got a silver medal for the British duals. Then on Sunday it was the individuals where I just missed the
final as the top 6 qualified and I came 7th (out of 10) but this time in front of my team mate and therefore I
am the new female British moguls champion. We were the youngest competitors from the women. We
have now travelled to Switzerland and have another competition next weekend.
