The Witches’ Wail April 2005 Volume 05, Issue 3 Sports Car Club of America - Wichita Region RE-REPEAT – Dave Geis Cabin Fever IROC 05’ – Bruce Bettinger What? Only $100?? For two days?? Yep, it’s one heck of a deal for all the track time you’ll get at the PDE at Hallett on the May 21/22 weekend. In fact I’ve heard one “racer” complain that it’s more track time than he usually gets for a $300 race weekend ;-). Not to mention that Heartland Park is charging $205 for the same thing and at least one other car marque is at $125 per day. So if you’re receiving the Wail for the first time after the March Solo or the Road Dog Rally, a little more information might be in order. The Ark Valley Race Group is having a Performance Driving Event (sometimes called an “alphabet soup” – more on that in a minute) in conjunction with the Driver’s School/Regional Races on that weekend. You will get multiple sessions of laps of Hallett with your daily driver or Solo car. There will likely be a speed limit and passing is very limited. If your car can pass a Solo tech, it can run the PDE, and a Snell M rated helmet (no loaner helmets available) and long pants and long sleeve shirt (preferably 100% cotton) is all the driver’s gear that you will need. For even more information, contact me, Scott Bettinger or George Morrison. Alphabet soup? Well, originally it was called a PCDE – Performance Car Driving Event. Then it got changed to HPCCC – High Performance Car Control Clinic. And since the first of this year it’s gone back and forth between PDC – Performance Diving Clinic to PDE – Performance Driving Event to finally settle on the current Performance Driving Experience. I think it’s just safer to call it the Alphabet Soup since everyone knows what that means anyhow <g>. RE REPEAT cont.

competition seasons have started – it’s been a busy few weeks. Maybe after everything is up to full speed, things will slow down a bit. What am I talking about? Let’s take the last few weeks in the life of an RE. Sunday was inspecting a new race car. Monday was the Solo Steering Committee meeting. Wednesday was the Board of Directors meeting. Saturday was a Rally training session. Sunday was the first Solo of the year. Wednesday was the audit of the Club’s financial records. Saturday was the Road Dog Rally. Wednesday was the Membership meeting. And in my spare time I . . . . But it looks like I’ll unfortunately have a break coming that will probably screw up at least one Solo and the first race of the year. The ol’ dermatologist has found even more skin cancer that he’s taking off at the end of March. Depending on the size of hole(s) he makes, it will probably be a while before I can get a helmet on again. For the obligatory public service announcement – use your sunscreen religiously!!!!!!! Are we havin’ fun yet?

WANTED!!!! Lake Afton T-shirts

Do you have a drawer full of Lake Afton T-shirts that you no longer want? If you do, please donate them. I would like to make a quilt (or two or three) to be raffled off at the MidDiv Convention with proceeds going to a charity such as Ronald McDonald House or the Wichita Children’s Home, etc. I would appreciate receiving them as soon as possible. Please contact me at 316-832-1369 or bring them to the monthly meeting. With much thanks, Linda Timmons

BOD MAR 05 – not approved a given amount to the Humane Society even if the rally didn’t take in that much. It was decided to table the recommendation until the next board meeting. Old Business: Lawrence Duty reported that he had attended the Chisholm Trail Festival Board Meeting to discuss the possibility of a Rallycross with their Festival. A location seemed to be the biggest problem. Dave Geis had checked with National about insurance and stated that it wasn’t a problem. It was decided after much discussion that because of the logistics of putting on a spectator event with only a couple of months to plan it in that maybe we would consider it for next year. New Business: Dave Geis requested an audit of the books from 2004. It is to be held at the Geis residence March 16th. Attending will be Dave Geis, John Houston, Bruce Bettinger, and Tom Urbanik. Charlene Bettinger received information about the Ride For Red. A rally that is being put on by the American Red Cross. She has info if anyone is interested. She also announced that someone had volunteered to make a quilt with Lake Afton T-shirts to raffle at the Convention this year and suggested that we donate the proceeds to a charity. Move to adjourn by Charlene Bettinger second by Bill Preheim. Motion passed.

Board Members Present: Dave Geis, Robert Foster, Charlene Bettinger, Kellie Barker, George Morrison, Bill Preheim, Tom Dupler, Scott Bettinger, Tom Urbanik Non-Voting Board Members Present: Hal Larcher, Lawrence Duty, Amy Timmons, Linda Timmons, John Houston, Lu Geis Visitors Present: Bruce Bettinger, Tony Cope, Othal Vrana Dave Geis called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Secretaries Report: Given by Lu Geis for the February Bod Meeting. Motion to approve by Charlene Bettinger second by Top Dupler. Passed. Membership Report: Given by Charlene Bettinger. She reported that we currently have 227 members. Notices were sent out to the dual members. She will have new membership forms ready for the Solo on the 13th. Merchandise Report: Lu Geis gave the financial report of Merchandise so far for the year. Wail Report: Lawrence Duty gave this report. He noted that the mailing list was below 200 pieces but that it should be back above that number this month. IROC Report: Bruce Bettinger gave a

financial report on the IROC held in March. Web Report: Robert Foster reported that hits were down this month. He has new pictures on line now. Asked the various chairs to check their pages and see if changes need to be made. AVRG Report: George Morrison announced that Texas had moved their race in July and that now there wouldn’t be a conflict. Sound control needs a new chief. If you are interested in learning this position please contact George Morrison. Activities Report: Amy Timmons presented a revised financial statement for the Awards Banquet. Also listed all the upcoming events. Treasurers Report: John Houston gave the report. Motion to approve by Charlene Bettinger. Second by George Morrison. Passed. Solo Report: Tom Urbanik reported that everything is ready for the first Solo and we have 30 preregistered so far. He also stated that Onex will be looking into allowing us to continue to use the lot after the sale is complete. Rally Report: George Morrison made a recommendation to donate

Solo 2 Report – Hal Larcher / Tom Urbanek

Our first event of the 2005 season is in the books. Hal and I would like to thank everyone who made the event a success and especially Dave Guilliams for getting the event started on time. The weather was less than desirable but we all survived. Me personally, I’d rather have it cold than hot because at least you can dress for the cold. I thought the course was very fun and it utilized the space available very well. Attendance was good with 75 drivers signed up with 3 fun runs. We would have had 76 drivers if Gary Blessing Jr wouldn’t have broken the hub on the Spyder before his dad could take a shot at the track. First event and first major failure during an event, we hope this doesn’t start a trend for us. However, we did get 12 new members at this event and that’s a trend that we would like to see continue. Dave Green snatched up FTD away from Jim Harrison by little more than .2 seconds. AS had a close battle between Dave Gird, who must have decided to blow the dust off his Corvette, and the always smooth Jim French and newcomer Mark Hill. Dave edged out Jim by .344 to win. STS had yet another close battle between Tim Harmon, Chris Lawrie and myself. I let Chris drive my car and he told me he was going to take it “easy”. He ended up finishing little more than .5 seconds behind me. If that’s taking it easy then I’m glad he didn’t go all out! I know I couldn’t have duplicated such a driving feat had I been behind the wheel of his car. Way to go Chris! I know I’m probably leaving out other class battles worthy of mention but Lawrence only gives us so much space. Up next we have Raytheon chaired by Tony Cope on April 3rd. With any luck you will be reading this before that event. I haven’t seen the lot since we were out there last season but I have been told that the ditch that we used to cross over has been repaved and leveled off. Combine that with the sweeper that Bob Howard is going to be arranging for us that weekend and we have the potential to have a very nice lot. Tom and Hal

March 13 was the first Solo of the year and thanks to the help of many individuals setting up the trailer and assisting with the course set up, we managed to start at 10 AM sharp. There was an excellent turn out as 75 people drove around the Boeing parking lot trying not to kill too many cones. This was more remarkable because the weather did not cooperate. A north wind and overcast day was made even worse by the memories of a beautiful Saturday. The temperature was a full 40 degrees cooler than the day before. David Green, in his super quick 1999 Miata, set an FTD with a super quick 43.588. This was 2/10s of a second faster than Jim Harrison in his 1972 Corvette. Looking at the PAX results gave Dave an even larger margin. The only major breakdown of the day when to Gary Blessing who had his front suspension fail leading to a wounded Fiat being escorted off the track with one corner resting on a jack. Tom Urbanek took a lot of pictures of the event and they are now posted on the Wichita Area home page, www.wichitascca.org be sure and check them out. As a first time event chairman I learned a few things. First, 6AM is way to early for me. I also relearned that even if it is cloudy, if you spend 10 hours in the sun it is important to remember sunscreen. And the most important thing that I learned is that being an event chairman is fairly easy when there are so many good people at the event eager to help out. After volunteering to chair the event, I was a little nervous about getting the event together especially since it was the first one of the year and I wanted to set a good tone for the season. Thanks to the assistance of Dave and Lu Geis, Tom Urbanek, Jim French, Hal Larcher and a host of others, the event practically ran itself and I would gladly volunteer to chair another event. Thanks everyone and see you at the next meet. David Guilliams

Rally Report – Keith & Judy Pfautz

ALBERT WEAVER AND RICH BIRETA ARE THE CAT’S MEOW

AT ROAD DOG III Round one of the MIDIV REGIONAL RALLY SERIES is in the books. The rally was won by the curda crankers from up north. Thanks go out to Dave Geis who came out and helped with registration and sent the cars off even though he was not feeling well. Thanks to Charlene Bettinger who was the registration and then worked check points (she was also the safety steward and put up with me). Thanks to Linda Timmons who helped in registration and worked check points. Thanks to Greg Laws, Paul Herder, and Scott Bettinger who worked check points. Thanks to Tom and Sheri Huxtable who were the sweep team. Thanks to Hal Larcher who ran lead with me. That may all seem to be redundant, but this event would not have been worth a d#*n if these fine folks had not spent their Saturday working so the rest of could play. This years version of the Road Dog was a simple drive in the country on some well known and loved roads here in south central Kansas. Brisk driving was the order of the day as this was a three hour rally that had been expanded to four. The check point workers deserve a real pat on the back as two crews did the work of three crews and everything went off with out a hitch. Entry was also down a little and I will take the hit on this. I had know idea that spring break would effect us so much. That and Salina had a test and tune on top of the rally. We ended up with eight teams. Most were experienced, but we had three teams from the Britsh Car Club who were first timers. The good part is that all teams made it to the party and made all the check points except control one. 1st Albert Weaver Rich Bireta 76 2nd Judi Pfautz Keith Pfautz 375 3rd Warren Meyer Stan Smith 425 4th George Morrison Maxine Morrison 573 5th Tony Cope Zorrie Cope 634 6th Don McMillan Gail McMillan 641 7th Kendall Clark Dana Clark 675 8th Charles Anderson Kathleen Dennis 872 Albert and Bireta were the only class A team so their dominance of the event is not surprising. All the other teams were class C and really the spread was not so great when you factor in that the bottom three teams had never done a time-speed-distance rally before. From where I sat everybody (workers and entrants) seemed to have a good time. As a rallymaster I have learned that the first thing I must do at the end of a rally is look for plucked chickens and smell for hot tar. If neither of these are evident it is ok to go into the after event party. If they are… drive on home and hide. Thanks again one and all for either entering or working. You made the time I had spent on the event worth it.

Have You Lost Your Shirt

Because You Just Didn’t Know The

Rules? Not a problem. Just give Lu a call and replace that shirt with a brand new Wichita Region T-Shirt. And while you’re at it ask her about the 2005 Solo rule book so it doesn’t happen to you again. Assorted patches, decals and stickers also available. Call Lu at 266-8234 or 832-

0496, or e-mail at [email protected].

By the time you read this, the Race Season will have started. I have not been to a race yet, however, St Louis has had a Double School/Regional and Memphis a Regional/National. I have not heard of any Wichita members who went. The first Race for me will be the Regional/Regional in Topeka. I don’t think I will be running, but I will go and work, which is a lot of fun. Next Race is April 9 & 10 at Hallett. It is a Regional/National. I will be working than event as well. Hopefully I will have everything ready to race at the May 21/22 event (Driver School/Regional) at Hallett. Remember that the May 21/22 event is also a PDE. Make plans to come to both the Topeka event and the Hallett event. Whether you are working, or racing, I am sure you will have a GREAT time.

Cabin Fever IROC 2005 – Bruce

(this is what we call practice), I start looking over who is there and making up teams. The first year I did this it was some what easy as I had no idea what I was doing and most of us didn’t either, but as there have been a wide difference in scores. So I began getting a little better at creating teams. I think it worked out very well this year as the completion was very close. I know it was mostly luck, but I take luck over skill any day. This year twenty people entered. Now lets see… Eight lanes, twenty people, what is the best team split? For better or worst, this year I went for seven teams of three. Ok, I know that doesn’t work so I settled for six teams of three and one team of two. Team A was made up of Mark Braun (a known ringer), Heather Clapp and Lawrence Duty. Team B was Andy Timmons (another ringer), Lu Geis and Dave Grid. Team C was Lonnie Heston (a rusty ringer), Greg McGehee and Rachael Duty. Team D was Robert Foster (experienced, but not a ringer), Steve Schvag and Greg laws. Team E was David Guilliams, Jonathan Epler and Carolyn Laws. Team F was Dave Geis and Kevin Kruse (note that this team would really get the most time on track and should be the odds on favorite to win). Team G was Bill Preheim, David Voth and Robert Clapp. Ok there are the line-ups, pick the team you think should do well and well see what happened when the flag falls. Heat one: Team E started out sandbagging so as not to tip their hand and turned only 43 laps. Team B turned 47 laps. Teams A, C, and G got one more at 48. Team D got 50 with Team F (the one that gets more time as one driver gets to drive twice per heat) took 1st with 52 laps. Team A turns the fastest one lap at 5.715. Heat two: Team E holds on to last with 35 laps (total 78). Team G backed into 6th with 46 (total 94). Team B is 5ht with 48 laps (total 95). Team D got 47 laps for 4th (total 97). Team A moved to 3rd with 51 laps (total 99). Team F fell to 2nd with 48 laps (total 100). Team C jumped to 1st with 53 laps (total 101). Team A again gets the fastest lap at 5.545. Can we see any patterns yet? Heat three: Team E holds last place with 38 laps (116). This was on what I think is the hardest lane to drive. Team B and Team G tie for 5th with 50 and 51 laps (145). Teams A and D tie for 3rd with 48 and 50 laps (147). Team F is 2nd with 51 laps (151). Team C gets a tight grip on 1st with 51 laps (152). Again Team A turns in the fastest lap with a 5.622. Wonder if that could be while Mark had the controller? Heat four: Team E ditto with 38 laps (154). Team A drop to 6th with 43 laps (190). Teams

B, C, and D become tied for 3rd with 49, 42, and 47 laps (194). Team F and G fight into a tie for 1st with 44 and 50 laps. Team A… no, Team D is fastest with a 5.609. Now where did that come from? Did they not let Mark drive? Heat five: Do I need to tell where Team E is with 40 laps (194)? Team A holds onto 6th with 43 laps (233). Team B falls to 5th with 45 laps (239). Team C claims 4th with 49 laps (243). Team D hangs onto 3rd with 50 laps (244). Teams F and G still run neck and neck for 1st at 51 laps each (246). Fastest lap goes to Team C with a 5.637. Heat six: Team E, 44 laps last (238). Team A is stuck in 6th with 51 laps (284). Team B hangs on to 5th with 49 laps (288). Team D drops to 4th with 46 laps (290). Team C is up to 3rd with 48 laps (291). Team F falls behind for 2nd with 52 laps (298). Team G turns in a great run with 53 laps (299) on red the second hardest lane to run. Team A woke Mark up so they took fastest lap at 5.711. Heat seven: Team E, 44 laps (282), well it’s taking six teams to beat them. Team A (fast lap and all) stays in 6th with 47 laps (331). Team D slips to 5th with 46 laps (336). Team B and C with 53 and 50 laps tie for 3rd (341). Teams F and G move back into a tie for 1st with 50 and 49 laps (348). Team B’s fast lap of 3.272 is protested and fasted lap goes to who else but Team A at 5.956. Heat eight: Last chance… Let it all out… Go for it… Team E was not sandbagging as it turns out. They get 47 laps (which is the same as two other teams this heat) which locks them into 7th with a total of 329 laps. Team A (one of my picks) keeps 6th with 47 laps (378). Team D holds to 5th with 52 laps (388). Team B tumble to 4th with 49 laps (390). Team C makes the podium with 52 laps for 3rd (393). The fight between teams F and G is resolved when Team F puts 47 laps on the boards for a total of 395, but is answered by Team G with a 50 lap run for a total of 398. Team B got the fastest lap this time with out protest at 5.928. If you look at the scores and if you don’t know slot car racing you will not realize that with a spread of 69 laps that the racing was real close. After the race if you looked at the car bodies you know how close some of the racing was. Several cars will not be going into the rental paddock. We had a great time and Mark didn’t win and more surprising Lu didn’t lose. She will have to stop harassing my team selection now or at least till next year.

MINOR WAIVERS Just a reminder: Minor Waivers are only good for one calendar year. If you had one on file for your minor last year, you will need to do a new one for this year. The Minor Waiver can be used for all events in 2005 if both parents/guardians have signed the release and it is either notarized or a current member witnesses the signatures. A minor will not be allowed in a “hot” area unless twelve years of age or older and have the Minor Release with signature of both parents/guardians on it. We can do an event release for minors that will not be in a “hot” area with the signature of one parent/guardian, but that release will be good for that event only. You should have two copies (if you down load off the net) made and after presenting at the first event, you keep one copy and bring it to all subsequent events. You need to show that copy to the registrar at each event the Minor attends. You could also be asked to show the Minor Waiver to an event official at any time. If you use the form provided by National (not from the internet), it is has a carbon. You will keep the carbon copy after presenting the Minor Waiver at the first event. If the registrar forgets to give you back a copy, be sure to ask for it. It is very important you have a copy of the Minor Waiver form for each Minor you bring to an event. Hours: Mon-Fri 9:00-6:00 SCCA SUPPORT FOR OVER 30 YEARS

This week I got an ivite to AARP and thought to myself GOOD GRIEF where has time gone! Then I got to thinking about the many things in my life I have accomplished and witnessed. And being somewhat retrospective, I began to reminisce of the events that meant the most to me. The top items of course had to do with family, but of all the things that I remembered that made me the most happy had certainly something to do with cars. And right after that music. I remember driving with my grandfather in his Ford and getting to sit in the front seat, and drving on the farm with my mothers father, Grandpa Rex. Going to Nash car shows with my dad in his 48 Ambassador, and seeing the old cars in their “who can turn their engines the slowest” contest. Drving my neighbors baby blue Jag when I was only 14, and riding in my girlfriends gold GTO in high school. Watching the drag races at Newton’s Airport, and illegal racing out in the countryside around Newton. ( Not me I was just watching I swear Mom!) Riding in Ott’s canary yellow Mach 1 Mustang at triple digits, I was young and scared but wanted to impress my girlfiend who was with me in the backseat. Seeing A.J. Foyt in the Indy 500 on a televsion the teacher let us watch in grade school in the gymn. “Bullet, The French Connection, Mad Max, The Great Race, and 100’s of other movies with cars as stars”. Sitting on the roof of a garage with my best friends Craig and Dale and telling each other “Wow if we just had a car we would be kings”. Dale got his first, a 67 GTO, Craig got his second, a 65 Falcon, mine was last, a 72 Maverick. Now stop laughing, I rode my bike to school until I was a Senior, I was happy to have anything. That car was brand new and cost $2500.00 with 3 speed on the column. My dad got it for me when I was in the hospital, I think he did it because he thought I was going to die. All during these times of course in the background just like in the movies, was the music of our times. And of course the ones I really enjoyed had something to do with cars. Music seems integral in the memories that come back to me, and a lot of times I will hear a song on the radio and get jolted back in time to a specific incident. In the following months I am going to insert lyrics of some of my favorite songs in the newsletter. If you can guess the artist you might just win a big prize, or perhaps not. Some will be easy, but most are very eclectic.Someone said to me the other day that they did not go to car shows because they only were interested in cars that actually go. I got to thinking about that and how different that was in my case, I love everything about cars, and almost all kinds of cars, and no matter what the venue they might be in. Jay Leno is my idol, need I say more. And I always have to laugh when I hear people who are a specific brand car lover, and trash the others. No one is safe from a skeleton in their car manufacturing closet. Don’t make me list them! Any way enough of the past and on to the future. Hope to see you at car shows, rally’s, races, cruise in’s, car lots, car washes, or just come and drop by my garage. I ususally have a beer or a wrench for you.
