The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, July 10, 2017 SPORTS DEMOS KEEP GETTING OLDER GOLF OLDEST, SOCCER YOUNGEST With just one exception, the relatively low-rated women’s tennis, the average age of viewership for every sport on TV has risen in the last decade, in one case (NASCAR) by as much as nine years. That’s the conclusion of analysis done by Sports Business Journal and Magna Global. Even the highest-rated sport—obviously NFL football—has seen its average viewer age by six years since 2000 and four years since 2006. The youngest skew goes to a generally low-rated sport, soccer, with numbers coming from Fox, Fox Sports 1, NBC and ESPN. Its viewers’ average age is just 40 years old, up only one year in the last ten years. While golf now has a number of rising young stars, they are being watched by the oldest audience of any sport. The PGA Tour’s viewers are an average of 64 years old (up from 59 ten years ago) while the LPGA isn’t much better at 63 (also up from 59 in that span). Also averaging 63 is a much less-televised sport, horse racing, whose viewer average was twelve years younger in 2000 and seven years younger in 2006. Of the big four professional sports, Major League Baseball has the highest average age of 57, up from 52 both in 2000 and a decade ago. The NFL’s average viewer age has been creeping up from 44 in 2000 to 46 in 2006 to 50 last year. The National Hockey League has seen its average viewer age rise dramatically, from as low as 33 years old in 2000 to 49 last year, an increase of about a year in viewers each year. The National Basketball Association, however, has not aged much since the turn of the century. Its average age of viewers was just 40 in 2000 and stayed the same when surveyed six years later—it has grown a mere two years to 42 now, suggesting perhaps that older viewers may be showing less interest in the sport but are being replaced by younger viewers. And the WNBA skews older than the men’s professional game—in sixteen years its average viewer age has grown from 42 to 55. The two major college sports fall about in the middle of the rankings, as both college football and college basketball attract audiences with an average age of 52. That’s five years older for football than its viewers had been 16 years ago, and eight years older for college hoops. The Olympics likewise fall near the middle with an average age of 53. The 2000 games had averaged a viewer age of 45, while the games six years later drew an average age of 50. NASCAR, which drew an average age viewer of 49 ten years ago, now averages 58. ADVERTISER NEWS It’s getting difficult to keep track of all Sears Holdings Corp’s store closure announcements but on Friday the company said it will close eight more Sears stores and another 35 Kmarts. It also plans to reduce the size of some other unprofitable locations……While some other auto manufacturers talk proudly about cutting back fleet sales, Toyota is going in the opposite direction and plans to increase sales to rental car companies and other fleet buyers. Total sales for the company have been down 3.6% at the year’s half-way mark, worse than the overall market’s 2.1% decline. Toyota fleet sales had been down about 20% so far this year but its North American CEO says it will finish flat with last year’s fleet sales after a heavier second half……The National Automobile Dealers Association’s monthly Market Beat notes Nissan is the biggest gainer of market share so far this year, with Fiat Chrysler the biggest loser……Fred’s, which had hoped to become the third largest drug store chain after buying hundreds of stores in the failed Walgreens/Rite Aid merger, now has to continue to do business on its own and find other ways to grow. Same-store sales were down 1.6% in June and in his first monthly commentary after the deal to buy the Rite Aid stores fell through, its CEO says strategy is now geared to “growing scripts and optimizing our supply chain and store fleet”……True Religion Apparel is the latest chain to be forced into a bankruptcy filing. It has about 140 stores in 33 states and also sells its products in hundreds of department stores and specialty stores……Good Times Restaurants had a better quarter than most of its competitors; same- store sales were up 3.7% and June peaked at plus 5.3%. Secondary chain Bad Daddy’s, a full-service concept, was up just 0.1% but is seen as the primary driver of growth in the next few years……Cirque du Soleil is buying Blue Man Productions and its Blue Man Group shows. Both companies run permanent attractions in tourist areas such as Las Vegas and Orlando, and each has traveling troupes going to different markets for short periods…… One of the largest owners of U.S. convenience stores is a Canadian company (Alimentation Couche-Tard with its Circle K brand), so why not an Irish company getting into the business here? Applegreen, the c-store banner of Petrogas Group is buying 42 Pitt Stop c-stores (and eight standalone Burger Kings) from The Brandi Group. Applegreen’s CEO said the purchase is “an ideal platform from which to further pursue our strategy for growth along the East Coast of the U.S.”

CONSUMERS AREN’T ABANDONING TV NEWS A new study, reported by Forbes, finds that America’s media environment is more polarized than any other Western country. The Reuters Institute recently released its 2017 Digital News Report, which reveals that while 51% of left-leaning Americans trust the news, only 20% of conservatives say the same. Right-leaning Americans avoid the news because “I can’t rely on news to be true.” Conservatives’ skepticism is nurtured by their deep, almost exclusive, commitment to Fox News. Two-thirds of conservatives watch Fox News, and an increasing number, 19%, visit the ultra-right wing site Breitbart.com. Liberals gravitate towards online sources like Buzzfeed, CNN, or the New York Times for their news. But most consumers are not abandoning TV for online news. Instead, they are integrating online and social media content into their existing news diet.

BUSINESS BYTES What happened to the approximate $620 million is sales lost by Chipotle Mexican Grill last year when customers stayed away due to the company’s highly publicized food safety scare? Apparently that money just disappeared, according to analysis from Nation’s Restaurant News. Looking at competitive fast-casual Mexican food chains last year, Qdoba’s sales grew by 8.3% and Moe’s Southwest Grill sales were up 7.5%, each appearing to have benefitted from Chipotle’s troubles. But a deeper look shows that both Qdoba’s and Moe’s had even stronger growth rates in the previous year, before Chipotle started to lose business. Even Taco Bell showed slower growth last year than in the prior year. NRN concludes consumers’ decisions on where to eat are more nuanced than what might be expected. “People don’t decide to eat fast-casual Mexican before picking Chipotle,” NRN says. “They picked Chipotle first. When it ceased becoming an option, they chose something else altogether.” Marketwatch reports research firm CreditSights now sees nine retailers with a Credit Risk Estimate (the probability of a credit default within the next twelve months) above 5% as of the end of June. Bon-Ton Stores the most risky chain right now, with CreditSights estimating a 24.7% chance of a default before the next year is over. Sears’ chances of a default are seen as 20.2% with others above a 5% chance being J. Crew, Claire’s, Neiman Marcus, Toys R Us, Men’s Wearhouse, J.C. Penney, and Supervalu. “The high leverage and weak operating trends within the sector point towards an upward trend in default rates over the next six to twelve months,” CreditSights said in its commentary on the report. TRIBUNE EXECS READY FOR BIG PAYDAY Top Tribune Media executives are set for multimillion-dollar payouts if the company’s $3.9 billion merger with Sinclair Broadcast Group is completed. The payouts, reported by Variety from SEC filings, show Edward Lazarus, Tribune Media exec VP and general counsel, is estimated to receive $9.7 million from sever-ance compensation and the value of his existing holdings in Tribune stock and options. Chandler Bigelow, chief fi-nancial officer, will receive $9.2 million. Larry Wert, presi-dent of Tribune’s TV station division, is set to pull in $7.8 million. Former Tribune Media CEO Peter Liguori will re-ceive $1.7 million based on the value of his existing equity holdings. and Peter Kern, who has served as Tribune’s interim CEO since March, will take in $207,774. The sale is expected to draw opposition from media watch-dog groups since it creates a company with more than 200 stations, reaching more than 70% of U.S. TV households.

NBC WANTS $5M+ FOR SUPER BOWL 2018 SPOT Selling out all the commercial inventory in the Super Bowl has become a tougher proposition in recent years. But it’s might get harder as advertisers and networks (NBC for 2018) disagree on continuing rate pressure. With an audience that has soared consistently above 110 million since 2014, the Big Game has become one of the most reliable events on the media-industry calendar. But Madison Avenue seems eager to block TV networks from scoring more than $5 million for a 30-second TV ad, says Variety.com, in an exclusive report.

Advertiser demand for NBC’s NFL broadcasts has been strong, according to Dan Lovinger, executive vice president of ad sales for NBC Sports Group. “We expect our upfront sales will be ahead of last year,” he said, citing an influx of new sponsors as well as interest from fast-food restaurants, consumer-electronics manufacturers, movie studios and insurance companies, among other categories. Variety notes the cost of an average

30-second spot has rocketed more than 100% between 2007 and 2016, according to Kantar data – rising from $2.39 million to $4.8 million. Fox sought more than $5 million for ads in this year’s game, but there are some who believe it may have accepted less in certain cases. And ad buyers say they want to hold the line on the latest move to drive up the price of ads in the Super Bowl. More NFL news: In an article filled with as many puns as possible, Advertising Age says Viagra and Cialis are “pulling out” from advertising in NFL games, creating “Deflategate 2.0.” The reason however, is a serious business decision as both brands are facing the rollout of a generic that will be priced much cheaper than the two drugs that have been on the air for close to twenty years. It notes Viagra hasn’t been on the air nationally since May 15 and did not participate in the upfront. Cialis loses its patent protection about halfway through the NFL season, and while it’s still on the air, it did not buy any NFL inventory in the upfront. One sales exec told Ad Age, “Once a generic gets in the mix, that usually spells the end of any direct-to-consumer advertising for the legacy brand. Rather than continue to market something they no longer have any exclusivity over…the pharmaceutical company will reallocate that portion of its budget back into its brands that are still exclusive.”
