LOGGERS DROP BASEBALL OPENER, 7-5

LACEY, Wash. - A five-run second inning proved to not quite be enough as the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the Saint Martin’s Saints, 7-5, in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Saints Field in Lacey, Wash.

The Saints (1-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the first after Shane Shoeneberg doubled to lead things off and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch by Logger starter Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes).

The Loggers (0-1) answered back in a big way in the top of the second. Freshman Charlie Bogart (Beverly Hills, Calif.) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman that allowed Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho) and Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) to score an give Puget Sound a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) picked up an RBI on a single to right field that scored Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) and then Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kala-heo) drove in Bogart as well as Zach Girod (Vancouver, Wash./Fort Vancouver) for an early 5-1 Logger lead.

The Saints answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tighten the Puget Sound lead to 5-4 but the Loggers were able to hold on to the advantage until the sixth inning when Jake Owens hit the sacrifice fly to center field to score Andy Cole. After a couple scoreless innings, the Saints found themselves with runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when Andrew Braegelmann hit a hard ball towards Crace at third base. Crace managed to scoop up the ball but his throw sailed wide, allowing Seth Drake and Michael McIver to score and give SMU a 7-5 lead.

Senior Kevin Jones came in to pitch the ninth inning for the Saints and got three straight outs to give Saint Martin’s their first win of the year.

The Loggers were led offensively by Resnik, who finished the game three-for-four from the plate with an RBI. Duvall looked solid in his first start of the season, despite allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings pitched.

Jeff Brooks collected the win for SMU, allowing one hit in one and two-third scoreless innings pitched. Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing two runs, neither of them earned, on one hit in one and two-thirds innings pitched. Jones collected the save, pitching one inning of no-hit ball.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Puget Sound picked up their first win of the young season over the Concordia Cavaliers 9-6 in a non-conference game at the Jim Doran Auto Classic, hosted by Linfield.

LOGGERS ATTACKED BY WILDCATS, 12-2

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Taking on the defending Northwest Conference champs and the favorite to win the 2009 crown, the Puget Sound Loggers fell to the Linfield Wildcats, 12-2, in a non-conference baseball game on Saturday at the Jim Doran Auto Classic in McMinnville, Ore.

The Loggers got on the board first in the top of the first inning when freshman Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) doubled to score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) to give Puget Sound a brief 1-0 lead.

Linfield answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning and then exploded for six runs in the third inning to open up a 7-1 lead. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 9-1.

Puget Sound scored again in the seventh inning when Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) singled in Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) but three more Linfield runs in the eighth gave them the eventual 12-2 win.

Logger starter Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) took the loss for the Loggers, allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings pitched. Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) pitched well in relief, throwing four innings with three strikeouts and just one walk. LOGGERS PULL PAST WHITMAN, 9-8

McMINNVILLE, Ore. - A sacrifice fly by Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) in the bottom of the eighth was enough to pull the Puget Sound Loggers past the Whitman Missionaries, 9-8, in a non-conference baseball game on Sunday afternoon at the Jim Doran Auto Classic in McMinnville, Ore.

After Whitman was able to sneak a run across in the top of the first inning, the Logger bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) got on base following a Whitman error that also al-lowed Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) to score and tie the game up at 1-1.

The Loggers got two more on the board a few batters later when David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea) doubled in both Matt Cox and Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo). The long inning wasn’t over yet as Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) reached on an error that allowed Thirlby to score and then Zach Girod (Vancouver, Wash./Fort Vancouver) scored on a double by Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) as Puget Sound held a 5-1 lead after the first full inning.

After three more Whitman runs in the top of the second got the Missionaries back within one run, Thirlby singled up the middle in the bottom of the inning to score Doug Cox and Resnik and push the UPS lead to 7-4. Whitman retook the lead following a sole run in the top of the fourth and three more in the fifth that put them up by a score of 8-7.

The Loggers tied the game back up in the sixth inning when Rockey singled to left field to score Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School). Puget Sound then took the final lead in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Cox used a one-out sacrifice fly to score Ringold and secure the 9-8 victory.

Junior Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani) collected the win, pitching two innings of scoreless baseball to close the game out. Blaine Mercado took the loss for Whitman, allowing nine runs, six of them earned, on 10 hits in eight innings pitched with a pair of strikeouts and a walk.

LOGGERS SLUG PAST BUCS IN HOME OPENERS

TACOMA, Wash. - Playing their first games at a renovated Logger Field, the Puget Sound Loggers swept past the Whitworth Pirates, 18-5 and 17-4, in a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Logger Field in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first game, the Loggers got on the board in the bottom of the first when Devin Black (Evergreen, Colo.) singled up the middle to score Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newcastle). The Loggers blew the game open in the bottom of the second as Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) singled in Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii) to make it 2-0 and by the time to Loggers were done hitting, the score stood at 7-0. Resnik also picked up an RBI and both Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) and David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea) drove in a pair of runs.

Whitworth scored in the top of the third when Dan Belet hit a two-run home run down the left field line to score Kevin Valerio as well but the Loggers answered back again in the bottom of the third, exploding for six more runs on six more hits. Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Huills, Calif./Harker School) drove in the first run and Resnik, Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek), Thirlby and Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) would also drive in runs during the inning.

Puget Sound added another run in the bottom of the fourth on a Black home run to left field and then the Loggers added three more on a three-run home run by Ringold in the seventh inning. Whitworth played to the end, plating three runs in the top of the ninth but the deficit was too great as the Loggers collected the 18-5 win in the NWC opener.

Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) collect the win and earned a complete game, striking out one and walking one in nine innings pitched. Peter Birdwell took the loss for Whitworth, allowing seven runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks in two innings pitched. Six Loggers had multiple hits in the game, including Ringold, who finished the game five-for-five from the plate with four runs scores and four RBIs.

Switching to their red alternate jerseys, the Pirates hoped for better luck in the second game but the Loggers’ home whites still had some pop left in them. Whitworth got on the board in the top of the first when Chad Flett singled through the right side to score Luis Tovar but the Pirate lead would be short-lived. In the bottom of the second, the Loggers took the led on a two-RBI single by Ringold that scored both Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) and Mentor. Rockey made it 6-0 with a one-out grand slam to right center that drove in Black, Ringold, and Grady as well.

Ringold picked up two more RBIs on a triple in the third that gave UPS the 8-0 lead and Resnik followed that with a two-run home run that scored Ringold. The Logger bats came alive once again in the sixth as Puget Sound pummeled the Pirates for seven runs on six hits, including a pair of RBIs from Mentor, Resnik and Rockey.

Whitworth added another run in the top of the eighth as Tovar scored on a Flett fielders choice. Two more Pirate runs would come across in the top of the ninth but, as was the case in the first game, it was much too little, too late.

Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) got the win for UPS, allowing just two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in eight innings pitched. Collin Gibbs shouldered the loss for Whitworth, allowing 10 runs on eight hits with three strikeouts in four innings pitched. Just like the first game, six Loggers had multiple hits in the nightcap. Rockey was three-for-five with six RBIs while Resnick was three-for-four in game two to go six-for-eight on the day with five total runs and six RBIs.

BASEBALL FALLS TO BUCS, THEN TO RAIN

TACOMA, Wash. - A day after putting up 35 runs in a pair of Northwest Conference victories, the Puget Sound Loggers got a taste of their own medicine on Sunday afternoon as the Whitworth Pirates used a nine-run second inning to take a 12-7 win in a NWC baseball game at Logger Field in Tacoma. The teams were supposed to play two games but the second game was washed away due to rain.

Whitworth took the lead in the second inning, taking advantage of three Logger errors to score nine runs, all of them un-earned, to take the early lead. The highlight of the inning came on a triple by outfielder Mitch Ramsay that scored a trio of Pirate runs as Whitworth gave the Loggers a taste of what Saturday was like for them.

The Loggers bats got to work in the bottom of the second as Puget Sound led off the inning with three straight triples. David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea) doubled to right center to score Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) and then Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) doubled in Thirlby to put two Logger runs on the board. Cox and Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) scored runs three and four respectively on a double by Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) as the Loggers cut the gap to 9-4.

Puget Sound got within two runs in the fourth inning as Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) singled in Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep). Resnik then singled in Hernandez and Ringold came around and scored on a Whit-worth throwing error following a failed pickoff attempt.

In the top of the sixth, the Pirates got a pair of insurance runs on a triple by Mitch Nelson that scored Luis Tovar and Mitch Ramsay and then Nelson scored one more on a Logger error as the Pirates collected the eventual 12-7 victory.

Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) took the loss for the Loggers, allowing nine runs, all unearned, on eight hits in one and two-thirds innings pitched. Chad Flett collected the win for Whitworth, allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with eight strikeouts in the seven-inning complete game.

Resnik continued his hot-hitting at the plate, going three-for-four with three RBIs on the game to lead the Logger offense. Ramsay led the way for Whitworth, going four-for-four from the plate with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Following a balk by David Colvin, Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep.) would drive in Rockey via a ground out to second.

In the fourth, Puget Sound would take a 3-0 advantage as Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) singled An-drew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) home. The Sagehens would answer with a two run fourth off the bats off Mike Silva and Brandon Huerta, cutting the Logger lead to one.

Pomona-Pitzer would then take the lead in the sixth when Nicholas Frederick hit a two-run homerun to left field. The Loggers would waste no time tying the game as they manufactured a run following Ringold’s lead-off double in the seventh. Resnik’s sacrifice bunt sent Ringold to third and Devin Black (Evergreen, Colo.) drove in the run via a ground out.

Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the Sagehens would don their rally caps and drive in the game-winning run off the bat of Fredericks, who earlier pushed the Sagehens in front following a homerun.

Loggers reliever Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawai’i/Iolani) received the loss. Starting pitcher Taylor Volz (Portland, Ore./US Grant) threw 3.2 innings two runs on five hits and struck out a pair. Ringold went 3-for-4, including two, two-out hits and one RBI. Freshman Leo Rosetti picked up the win for the Sagehens, striking out two of the four batters he faced in the ninth. Colvin, the starter, went eight inning and allowed all four of the Logger runs, struck out four, and allowed seven hits in the no decision.

BASEBALL SPLITS WITH #19 REDLANDS

REDLANDS, Calif. - Facing off against the 19th-ranked team in NCAA Division III, the Puget Sound Loggers more than held their own, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with the Redlands Bulldogs, winning 9-6 before losing 14-9, at The Yard on Saturday afternoon in Redlands, Calif.

In the first game, the host Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead but Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) was able to knock in Mark Rockey (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./New Mexico) in the top of the second to even the score at 1-1. Redlands added one more in the bottom of the second and a pair in the third to push their lead to 4-1 after three frames.

The score would stay at 4-1 through five innings until the Logger bats came alive again in the sixth. Rockey led things off with an RBI double to left center that scored Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport). Cox then doubled to right field, scoring Rockey and then Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) hit a two-RBI double upt he middle that scored Cox and David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea).

Redlands would strike for one more in the seventh but Rockey picked up another RBI in the seventh as he drove in Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) and then Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) singled in Rockey to put UPS up, 7-5. One more Redlands run got them back within one in the bottom of the eighth but Rockey hit a bomb to right field to score a pair as the Loggers collected the 9-6 victory.

Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) got the win for the Loggers while Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore.) collected the save. Kevin Bissell took the loss for the Bulldogs. Rockey finished the game three-for-four from the plate with four runs scored and four RBIs.

In the second game, the Bulldogs took control early, putting up four runs in the top of the first. The Loggers answered back with a pair in the bottom of the first, including one on an RBI triple by Cox. The Bulldogs answered that back with two of their own in the top of the second on a home run by Jeffre Johnson. In the bottom of the second, Ringold got the Logger offense going with a two-RBI triple down the right field line that scored Grady and Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo). Chaz Kramer (Boulder, Colo./Silver Creek) then singled in Ringold to get Puget Sound back within one run, 6-5.

Each team added one run in the fourth and then the Bulldogs tacked on another run in the top of the fifth to push their lead to two runs. Redlands blew the game open in the top of the seventh, using five runs to build the big lead. UPS answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame but it would prove to be too little as the Bulldogs would win by an eventual final of 14-9.

Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) took the loss for Puget Sound, allowing eight runs on 14 hits in five and two-thirds innings pitched with three strikeouts.

LOGGERS SCARE WILDCATS By: Jermaine Williams (UPS Athletics)

TACOMA, Wash. - Following a series opening win by #20 Linfield, 14-4, the Loggers put a big fright in the Wildcats, coming up just short of the upset, 5-4 in a Northwest Conference matchup today at Logger Field.

The back end of today’s double-header was exciting from start to finish as the Loggers stood toe-to-toe with the Wildcats. Linfield scored right out of the gate via a pair of Logger errors. Will Mentor (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) tied the game at two with a screaming double down the left line.

Linfield would retake a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning off a single by Ryan Larson. However, the Loggers would answer the call, tying the game for the second time in the fifth inning. Mark Rockey (Montlake Terrance, Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) led off the inning by drawing the hit-by-pitch. Rockey advanced to second and then third via a walk and beautiful bunt by Casey Coberly (Boise, Idaho). Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawai’i/Kalaheo) would drive Rockey in with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Rockey would lead off the seventh inning with a double to centerfield that was five feet from clearing the wall. Following a passed ball, Coberly singled into left field, scoring Rockey and pushing the Loggers ahead 4-3. Linfield would rally in the fol-lowing inning off a double to deep center by designated hitter Stew David, tying the game at four and a throwing error on the Loggers, allowing the final run to cross the plate. The Loggers could only get one more hit before losing a heart-breaker 5-4.

Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) pitched a beauty today for the Loggers, going 7.2 innings. Wildcat starter Reese McCulley drew the no decision after pitching five innings. Mitch Edwards was awarded the win, following three innings of work. Andy Hunthausen picked up his first save of the year.In the opener, the day started our rough for the Loggers who allowed five runs in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats took advantage of getting their two lead runners aboard and continuing to move them around via base hits. Following a double by Mentor, Doug Cox singled to right field, putting the first Logger run on the board in the fourth, 6-1.

Linfield would add five more in the fifth before Mentor would come back up and send a three-run no-doubter over the fence to cut the Wildcat lead to 11-4. The ‘cats held on to their advantage, adding a few more insurance runs before ultimately winning 14-4.

Logger starter Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) drew his first loss of the season today, going four inning and allowing seven hits and nine runs. Cameron Larson, Linfield starter, improved to 4-1 on the season, as he threw seven inning, striking out six.

ROCKY’S SIX-RBI DAY NOT ENOUGH TO POWER PAST LINFIELD By: Jermaine Williams (UPS Athletics)

TACOMA, Wash. - In the final day of the Puget Sound/Linfield series, Mark Rockey went a combined 3-6 with two homer-uns and six RBI’s, but it was not enough power as the Loggers dropped the final two games, 11-2 and 10-4, in a Northwest Conference double-header at Logger Field.

In the opener, Puget Sound took a 2-0 lead early as Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) led the game off with a single. Rockey (Montlake Terrace, Wash./Univ. of New Mexico) would later follow with a two-run homerun to left center. That lead would stick until the fourth when Wildcat slugger Stew David lined a double down the leftfield line. Following a pair of hits and RBI’s, the ‘cats would have a 3-2 lead.

The sixth inning was the big inning for Linfield as they picked up six runs on four hits, capped by David’s two-run homerun down the leftfield line. Linfield would add two more in the top of the seventh, taking the win 11-2

Taylor Volz (Portland, Ore./Grant) went 5.0 innings for the Loggers. He struck out three in a losing effort. Evan Hilberg im-proved his record to 4-0 in the win. Hilberg also struck out six Loggers in 6.0 inning of work.

The late-inning work from Linfield bled over to the beginning of the second and final game of the series. The ‘cats scored a pair in the first, one in the third, and five in the fifth before the Loggers could answer. Resnik led off the fourth inning by getting hit by the pitch. Following a pop out, Rockey again stepped to the plate and a two-run homerun to left center.

Linfield added a run in both the sixth and seventh inning. The Loggers would not go quietly and mounted a small rally in the seventh. With two outs on the board, Marcus Luther (Newport, Ore./Newport) came in to pinch hit and drew a walk. That was followed by a Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) single, moving Luther into scoring position. Each runner would pick up a base off a passed ball by Linfield hurler Kyle Mosbrucker. This set up Rockey’s two-RBI single into right field, scoring Luther and Hernandez. This would wrap up the rally and the series as the Logger flew out to end the game 10-4.

In a losing effort, Colby Robinson (Gig Harbor, Wash./Olympic College) threw 3.0 inning. Garrett Dorn picked up his first win of the season, pitching 6.0 inning for Linfield. He only allowed two runs and struck out eight.

LOGS/PIOS SLUG TO DOUBLEHEADER SPLITBy: Jermaine Williams (Puget Sound Athletics)

TACOMA, Wash. – Saturday’s Puget Sound/Lewis & Clark doubleheader was a slugfest, tallying 48 hits between the two squads. The Loggers took the first game 15-4 while Lewis & Clark won the second 12-10 in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Logger Field.

The Loggers (7-14/4-9 NWC) opened the first game up in the second inning with four runs off four singles, capped with Travis Hernandez’s (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison)) shot to left field, driving in two. The Pioneers (5-17/5-12 NWC) would tack on one before the Loggers would put four more on the board in the fifth inning on eight hits. Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) nailed a double to right setting up the Loggers big inning. Following a RBI single and RBI sacrifice fly, Dakota Resnik (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) brought in two more with double to the centerfield fence.

Puget Sound would score one more time with a seven-run sixth inning. Matt Cox and David Thirlby (Seattle, Wash./O’Dea) would both hit doubles before Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) would hit his second homerun of the season. The Loggers continued to play strong baseball, winning the first game 15-4.

Tim Fogarty (Pacifica, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) pitched 8.0 innings in a winning effort. Forgarty, now 3-1, allowed three runs, four hits, and struck out four in game one. Alex St. Pierre drew the loss for the Pioneers. St. Pierre threw 5.0 innings, allowing eight runs and eight hits.

In the second game of the bout, Lewis & Clark took an 9-1 lead before the Loggers could really began doing some work. Doug Cox (Kailua, Hawaii/Kalaheo) hit a double to begin the sixth inning. Both Resnik and Hernandez would hit singles into the field to score runs, cutting Pio margin to 9-4.

Lewis & Clark would regain all three of those runs, aided by a seventh inning Jordan Wlodarczyk’s two-run homerun. The Logger faithful would don the rally caps in the final three innings, as Loggers would have the bases loaded in each of the last three innings.

In the seventh, the first two Loggers grounded out. Thirlby would draw the walk while Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) and Ringold both were hit by pitcher Roland Greene. However, Resnik would fly out, ending the seventh.

In the eight, again, the first two Loggers grounded and flew out. The bases would be load via a pair of singles and walk. Thirlby would follow with a three-run double off the right field fence, making the score 12-7.

Andrew Koppel (Makawao, Hawaii/Seabury Hall) came in to pitch the ninth and had a flawless inning, hurling nine of ten strikes and retiring the side. Ringold laced a single to the shortstop while the next two batters hit by Pio pitcher Sami Morgan. With the bases loaded, Will Mentor hit a two-run double to left field, and then advanced to third base via a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing another Logger to score. That would end the rally and contest as the Loggers fell 12-10.

Adam Rager was the winning pitcher, going 5.2 innings. James Lane (Silverdale, Wash./Avila College) drew the lost for the Loggers, going 1.2 innings and allowing three runs. (Line Score on Next Page...)

LOGGERS BOUNCE PIOS IN SERIES WINBy: Jermaine Williams (Puget Sound Athletics)

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound Loggers took advantage of the beautiful spring day to take the final two games and the series from the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 2-1 and 9-8 in a Northwest Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

It was a battle of the pitchers in game one as Cameron Duvall (Lakewood, Wash./Lakes) and David La Douceur each threw great games. The Pioneers (5-14/5-19 NWC) took an early 1-0 lead in the third. The Loggers (6-9/9-14 NWC) would finally strike in the sixth inning as Mark Rockey (Montlake Terrace, Wash/Univ. of New Mexico) sent a 2-0 pitch over the right-center fence to tie the game at one.

In the seventh, Andrew Grady (Cave Creek, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day) led off the inning with a single to left-center. Both Travis Hernandez (Burlington, Wash./Burlington-Edison) and Rockey were intentionally walked setting up Will Mentor (Seat-tle, Wash./Seattle Prep) to win the game on a RBI single to right field. Mentor’s walk-off hit gave the Loggers the 2-1 win.

Duvall improved to 2-4 on the season, throwing a complete game. Duvall allowed one run on six hits and struck out three. Roland Greene drew the loss for the Pios as he came in and allowed the game winning run.

In the final game of the series, the Loggers took advantage of the Pios early, taking a 5-0 lead after the first frame. After a pair of singles for the Loggers, Matt Cox (Salem, Ore./South Salem) crushed a two-run homerun to the deepest part of the park. Following Gregg Ringold (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Harker School) legging out a bunt single, Casey Coberly hit a RBI double to right center.

After allowing a run in the top of the fourth, the Loggers added one in the bottom of the frame and three in the fifth. In that fifth, Ringold and Coberly both hit singles to begin the inning. Jason Powell (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) hit a sac bunt to set up Grady’s two-run single out to left. The Loggers led 9-1 heading into the sixth.

Roland Greene added a run in the sixth off a sac fly to left. In the seventh, the Pioneers wouldn’t go away quietly as a pair of runs scored on a errant throw and a double. Following a pair of walks, Tucker Laurence hit a grand slam cutting the Logger lead to 9-8. Spencer Crace (Wilsonville, Ore./Wilsonville) then used three strikes to close out the game and the win for the Loggers.

Jarvis Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani), now 2-1, pitched 5.0 inning in the win. Nohara struck out three and allowed one run in the win. Crace picked the save for the Loggers. Evan Fairmont lasted only 0.2 innings, allowing all five of the early runs in the loss.
