From the Director of Sport

As the Lent term comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all

the pupils, staff and parents for their efforts and commitment throughout what can

only be described as a very busy term. There have been some outstanding fixtures,

results and achievements in all sports.

As Director of Sport I am very aware of the amount of work involved in all aspects

of the school’s sporting programme and it would only be appropriate at this time to

also thank all those involved behind the scenes. Everyone from administration staff,

grounds staff and catering, to name but a few, deserve praise as we would not be

able to operate as successfully as we do without their input.

I do hope that you enjoy your afternoon and may I also take this opportunity to

wish everyone a Happy Easter.

A special mention and congratulations to the following:

The golf team managed to beat the BB&O County side, one of the best junior

county sides in the UK, last weekend and later in the week were victorious in the

Gerald Micklem Trophy.

Last Friday, the U19 boys' and girls' swimming relay teams competed in the HMC

National Championships at the Aquatic Centre at the Olympic Park in London.

Our very young U19 girls' freestyle team of Imogen Livingstone, Neve McDonald,

Laura Brown and Annabelle Turner came 9th out of 40 schools.

The 1st XII lacrosse team ended their season on a high note and a winning streak

beating St Swithun's 9-4. Alexia Taee has also been selected to play for the London

South Academy U15B team at the Girls' Regional Tournament in Coventry over the

Easter break.

Matt Williams was named Rugby World Young Player of the Month last week. An

outstanding national achievement.

Wellington's 3rd XI football team put in a dominant display against St John's on

Saturday. Ably captained by Sam Beard, Wellington emerged as well deserved 3-0

winners.

The U15A netball team put up a tremendous fight v Marlborough. For the first

three quarters, the two teams couldn't be separated with play going goal for goal.

Wellington won the final quarter 12-2, meaning an overall 31-19 victory. The U15Cs

also responded positively to a similar challenge emerging winners 24-19.

The 3rd XI boys' hockey team had put in some excellent work in training in the

lead up to Saturday's game against St Edward's which resulted in a fantastic team

performance and a 2-0 win.

An excellent interschool ski competition was had by all members of the team

last week. There were some excellent individual run times by Toby Bryer, Jono

Foster, Lottie Boyd and James Thorne. There was excellent and consistent racing

from Paolo Rossi who successfully completed all his runs. Will Beardmore also

completed all of his runs and secured an excellent top 20 finish. Jono Foster and

Lottie Boyd both finished 6th in their slalom races. All skiers should be very proud

of their performance.

An outstanding week for the Yearlings 7s squad remarkably winning the QE Barnet

7s, the Surrey 7s and the Reigate 7s, three major tournaments in the space of 8

days. The U16s also reached the All England 7s final yesterday beating rivals Millfield

twice on the way but losing narrowly in the final to Brighton.

Teams of the Week

The U14A and 1st VII netball teams had a long journey up to Merseyside to

compete in the National Schools Finals. Both teams were placed in a pool of 9 and

were already placed in the top 18 in the country for making it to Nationals. The 1st

VII had some tough games including a nail biting draw against the overall finalists

Hartpury College. A great team performance from all 10 players saw some brilliant

wins in their pool as well as tightly contested games that put the spectators on the

"When considering the stature of an athlete or for that matter any person, I set great store in certain qualities which I believe to be essential in addition to skill. They are that the

person conducts his or her life with dignity, with integrity, courage, and perhaps most of all, with modesty. These

virtues are totally compatible with pride, ambition, and competitiveness."

- Don Bradman

edge of their seats throughout. They finished 3rd in their group and 7th overall in

the country, a massive achievement and something they should be proud of. The

U14As had only lost one game in the 8 group games as they entered their semi-final

to Millfield. A tough game which left Millfield going through to the final, then led to

the 3rd place play off versus Ripon High. The girls were calm and composed and

went on to rightfully win their bronze medal comfortably, putting them 3rd in the

country overall.

Congratulations to the College squash team who won the National Schools Squash

Trophy Competition last week in Manchester. The team consisting of: Captain

Maxim Smith, Chris Membrey, Ben Curran, Sam Corbett, Louis Lyne and Luke

Hambly beat Bedford School in the final. A fantastic achievement and a fine reward

for a long and demanding season. Special thanks to the coach, Steve Meads, for

getting them to the finals!

performance by all players.4. Avoid belittling a player for losing or making mistakes.5. Accept publicly official judgments.6. Support the players’ involvement and help them to enjoy the game.7. Use correct and decent language at all times.8. Maintain communication with coaches about schedules and fixtures.9. Support all selection decisions made by Wellington coaches.10. Parents, supporters and visitors should not, under any circumstances,

enter the playing arena unless invited to do so by the match officials or the member of staff in charge of the activity.

If a parent, guardian or guest has any issue concerning them about sport at Wellington, please e-mail the Director of Sport at [email protected], rather than individual coaches, unless it is on a purely administrative level.

Medical Cover for Sporting Eventsduring the Lent Term

Wellington College Health Centre is situated next to Apsley House, close to the Monro Pavilion. During Saturday matches there are two nurses on duty, based in the Health Centre.

‘Lifesigns Group’ provide the College with up to 6 paramedics, who will be based around the various pitches and sports venues. The paramedics can be identified easily as they usually wear green. They are the first point of contact for any pupil who has been injured and the paramedic decides whether to treat the injury pitch-side, take the pupil to the Health Centre for treatment or direct the pupil and a helper to the Health Centre. There is usually a Lifesigns’ ambulance on site to be used to help pupils to the Health Centre when necessary. Most treatment will take place on- site, in the Health Centre. Parents are obviously most welcome to accompany the pupil.

On some occasions if a more serious injury is suspected, the paramedic will ask for a nurse on duty to come directly to the pitch/venue to assess the injured pupil. If necessary, an NHS ambulance will be called directly to the pitch.

The Health Centre remains open after matches have finished for any medical concerns or minor injuries requiring advice. After sport has finished for the day, the nurse on duty exchanges any relevant information with the nursing team at the visiting College.

Sr Bev Gilbert, Nurse in Charge

May we please remind all our visitors that

this is a NO SMOKING campus.

Wellington College is pleased to present its plans to build a new and prestigious Real Tennis Court. With the support of a group of generous OWs and friends who have raised the majority of the funds, it is hoped that the project build will begin this summer.

The new court will be an impressive addition to the spectacular estate of Wellington College. It has been designed to enhance the sports complex, which has been developed over the years since 1867 when the College's rackets court was first built. Wellington has a proud association with racket sports of all types, and there is tremendous support from the Governing Body, and throughout the institution, to add to this heritage with the addition of Real Tennis.

For more information, please contact Development at the Foundation Office or see the display boards in the Health and Fitness Club.
