The determination and effort shown in the pre-season training revealed that everyone was in the right mindset to continue the success in the domestic season. We began our season with a traditional trial match against that school from Cobham. There was a good show from the forwards and in the back play. A highlight was a cross kick from Swindell which led to a try from Crabtree showing that the team had flair. There were also tries from Cox and Harvey, and the man mountain Mays who came on after a long few months of injury to bosh his way over the line in a storming run from a quick tap penalty. The next trial match against St John’s College Southsea was closely fought all the way although we had improved considerably since the previous game and we narrowly won 13-12. Tries came from Bluck and Charalambous and two penalties were kicked by our star lock (who often thinks he is a centre) Peter Hyams. With the trial games finished and a team firmly selected, we headed to Emanuel School. With tries from Bower and Crabtree, a penalty from Hyams, and a late try and conversion, the final score was 22-20 in our favour. The next fixture was at Seaford College. The team showed great flair in attack and defended admirably which led to six tries and a final score of 34-0. A great individual piece of skill secured Jake Wilkinson a try with the others coming from from Bluck, Bower, Swindell, Reavley and Crabtree with Hyams kicking two conversions. The next huge challenge was Sutton Valence away – it had been several years since a Freemen’s 1st XV had won at the Kent school. We welcomed back James Wilson from injury and with the Lower 6 boys leading the charge we came away with a 21-3 win with tries from Harvey and Wilson, whose boot also landed two conversions and three penalties. The following weekend we played away at Reading Blue Coat. We had really started to get used to playing with one another and the team spirit and understanding was high. This spirit came through in a great showcase that led to 32-8 win with tries from Orchard, Hyams, Cox, Wilkinson and Taylor and an impressive debut performance from Jamie Graham at full back. Wilson’s boot also helped secure the victory with a penalty and two conversions. Our early season success led the team to earn the prestigious Evening Standard ‘Team of The Month’ award which was a huge highlight of the season and a massive confidence boost going forward. Our first official game at home was against Caterham. We played well again and in a very physical game we came away with a 27-3 win. Two tries came from flying full back Crabtree and Wilson was again impressive kicking five penalties and converting one of the tries. Our biggest test of the season was playing Chislehurst and Sidcup away. We had unfortunately sustained injuries to a couple of players but knew we had strength in numbers with players who could come up from the 2nd team. The game was close all the way through, and with each try we scored, the opposition came back to cancel it out with a try of their own. Unfortunately we narrowly lost 24-26 which did not reflect our performance. A special mention has to go to the quiet giant, prop Ben Pooley who put in an incredible performance in the absence of his propping partner. Tries came from Hodgson, Swindell, Pooley and Hyams, who also kicked two conversions. Our unbeaten streak was over, but we got straight back to training hard, and a pressure was lifted, which meant we could start to express ourselves even more. We were determined to bounce back in our next game against the extremely hospitable St Dunstan’s College. The game reflected this determination with a plethora of tries from Mays, Charalambous, Taylor, Hatcher, Hyams (who also kicked two conversions) and a hat-trick from Crabtree leading to a 44-3 win. This victory took us onto the next game against Dartford Grammar away. The game was not our best performance but we came away with a 13-5 win, with tries from Crabtree and Mays and a penalty from vice captain Swindell. CITY OF LONDON FREEMEN’S SCHOOL 101

After Christmas we played Wallington athome, who put a strong team out everyyear and was never going to be an easymatch. In a close fought match we securedanother victory with a final score of 14-10thanks to a try from Hyams and threepenalties fromWilson.

The following weekend we were away atGlyn. We dominated and they could notkeep up with our pace and intensity. Glynnever looked like scoring and we managedto secure our largest win of the season –72-0, including hat-tricks from Cox andReavley as well as two tries from Swindell, and tries from Hodgson, Taylor andJackson. Wilson kicked five conversionsand a penalty with Hyams kicking twofurther conversions.

We next played London Oratory at homeand again put in a solid performance wherewe were in control for the majority of thegame. Our maul was a real strength in theside and led to two tries from Mays. Goodwork at the breakdown set up a goodplatform for Jackson, Bluck and Swindell toalso cross the white wash and threeconversions fromWilson. This resulted in afinal score of 33-7 to us.

We then had a real treat in playing StGeorge’s Weybridge. The atmosphere in thechanging room before the game was electric.Everyone was determined to put in a goodperformance against one of the best sidesaround. The whole team was completelycommitted to winning the game. The powerof our forwards and skill of our backs weretoo much for the opposition and the defenceshown was impenetrable. In the best teamperformance that I personally have everbeen involved in, we came away with a 31-17 win which I’m sure the players will neverforget. Tries came from Cox, Charalambous,Reavley, Hodgson and Swindell.

The next game against Tiffin away, wasalways going to be tough. Unfortunately thestrength of their scrum and their hunger fora win in their last game saw us lose 38-0.

Although this hurt the team, we knew wehad to bounce back for our final gameagainst Reigate Grammar.

We had the pleasure of playing Reigate on afloodlit pitch at Sutton and Epsom, whichwas a great opportunity for the team. After afocused and emotional hour of preparationand motivation from Mr Moore, we wereready to go. We exploded into action andused our set moves and pace in the backs toout manoeuvre the opposition and ourpower in the forwards to dominate thecontact situation. Our efforts for the wholeseason were rewarded with a 36-11 winwhich was a very enjoyable last memory forthe Upper 6 leavers.

SEVENSOn 6th March, we were at the Reigatesevens. Unfortunately, John Fisher Schoolwas the better team on the day and qualifiedfor the main tournament. Nonetheless, having won our other two games wequalified for the plate quarter-final but lostto Tonbridge.

The Surrey Schools tournament took placeon 23rd March. In the first fixture we hit arelentless rhythm against Eltham College. Inthe second match the boys gave St Joseph’s arun for their reputation right up to the finalwhistle until their international scrum-halffound a rare gap in the last play. Nick Bluckand Philip Earle deserve special mention fortheir considerable efforts in the match. Thegroup’s conclusion saw us again face up toTonbridge which, despite ending in a similarfashion, provided a fantastic spectacle foreveryone involved. Their physicality againproved too great and even marked the endof the tournament for Olly Mays whoreceived a taste of his own bone-crunchingmedicine and came away with concussion. Ahighlight of the game was Cox’s hand-offwhich gave a Tonbridge player a reluctantflying lesson.

Our efforts were rewarded with qualificationinto the Surrey tournament where weplayed the tournament’s top seed,

Richmond. However, we engaged in ourbest performance yet. The highlight of thematch was a characteristic Tresadern skipand run through a baffled Richmonddefence. In the semi-final against RGSGuildford fatigue took its toll and wenarrowly missed the opportunity of a final.

The Nationals at Rosslyn Park marked thelast day the Upper 6 would play inchequered red and blue, therefore itpromised to live up to its epic reputation. The day kicked off against the Welsh team,Bassaleg. We had all guns blazing, eachattack led intuitively by James Wilson.Taylor also showed off his consistent talentand made many breaks, unfortunatelyfailing to finish the majority on account ofhis characteristic ‘Moon-Walker’ runningstyle. Two further wins followed making itthree wins out of three. However Juddplayed an admirable brand of rugby whichmeant we came out second in the group.Overall, we achieved a plus 46 pointsdifference which is to be commended.

The team’s performances were gladlyreceived by a loyal party of parents whoattended every game and never failed tooutnumber the opposition’s supporters. Aspecial mention should go to the Hyams’supporting party who never shy from theirtrademark “Go on Petee”. Finally, I mustthank Mr Moore and Mr Deighton, both ofwhom contribute valuable time into a veryclosely knit team atmosphere. Mr Moore’scommitment and popularity within the teamhas been an integral facet to our successand enjoyment. Mr Deighton’s passion hasbeen second to none and his positiveattitude to the game has been respectedand replicated by the squad. We play towin for ourselves and, more importantly, for each other and the memories that wehave woven together will always have apermanent spot in our hearts.

The season started with a squad containinga core of senior players and a majority fromLower 6. From the first training sessions itwas clear that the group enjoyed eachother’s company and were fully committedto making the most of their rugby with hardwork in training and utter determination inmatches. The group were fortunate to trainwith the 1st XV and when called upon theystepped up to provide solid deputies forthe senior side.

The major highlights of the season includedan excellent victory at Emanuel where a haulof 16 points from fly-half Frederick Daviescontributed to overturning a six point half-time deficit into a 25-31 victory. Amongstfive different try scorers, Richard Cookseycontributed a hat-trick in the 7-45 victory atSutton Valence which was a remarkableeffort for a front row forward. The try of theseason was scored in the 5-19 victory atDartford Grammar with superb build-upwork by Jamie Graham and John Ellis finishedin style by William Straughan. The seasonended in the early spring sunshine with ahard track being used effectively by theteam to out-pace Tiffin in a comfortable win.

The disappointments of the season

included the long period without rugbybefore Christmas owing to the snowalongside a sense that the team was a littlebetter than the end record might suggest. However, incredible defence and resolutetackling against bigger teams such asCaterham and Reigate Grammar Schoolsuggested no lack of courage and effort.

The squad as a whole must be praised fortheir consistent passion for the game andwillingness to adapt to the requirements ofselection and injuries in the team. Lower 6players Frederick Davies and WilliamStraughan were the leading point scorer andcontributor of tries respectively whilst JorelBajwa and Philip Earle showed 1st XV class.Credit must also be given to the superbefforts and leadership of the Upper 6students. Christopher Daniels and JamesTrinder provided strength from the forwardsand vice-captain Lewis Main was a tirelesspresence at the breakdown. Above all, captainJamie Graham was inspirational on thepitch with incisive running and tenacioustackling at full-back. Next season’s leaderson the pitch will have much to live up to,but excellent role-models to follow.

I arrived at Freemen’s after the season hadbegun, and the team had already wonthree of four games. The match reports Ireceived were very encouraging and madea solid foundation in which to build on forthe season. These consisted of one verytight fixture against Reeds with a brilliantcomeback in the second half only to end ina narrow loss, a very close victory againstSt John’s College 17-12, an outstandingwin against Emanuel and another closewin against Seaford College.

My first game in charge was against SuttonValence, in which we were able to squeezea win with Nicholas Mays and SebRougemont each grabbing a try andCharlie Morrison nudging a conversion.

My first game as a Freemen’s Rugby Coachand my first win but more importantly theboys had four wins from five games, atremendous winning ratio and Septemberwas not even finished.

Our next game was against ReadingBlue Coat and playing against a mucholder and bigger team, it was always goingto take a good performance to come awaywith a win. We left after a great performance, with a dominating victory 26-0 with equallydominating individual performance fromCharlie Morrison and Philip MacDonaldwho finished with two tries each.

In the following two weeks we played twogames against Caterham and Chislehurst& Sidcup with a mid week trial matchagainst King’s College School, Wimbledon. We showed great determination againstCaterham but couldn’t manage to salvagemuch more then a 38-8 loss but after a veryinfluential trial/training match againstKing’s we turned our mistakes intopositives with a resounding win againstChislehurst & Sidcup 36-0 thanks to greatgame management by Charlie Morrisonand Alex Culhane.

We squeezed one more game in againstDartford Grammar before the weather bit, which led to games against Wallington andSevenoaks being cancelled. Having lost toDartford, our losing streak continued withlosses in the rearranged game againstWallington and an away fixture against agood Glyn team.

We managed to pick ourselves up for ournext game against a very good LondonOratory team as we won 33-12. This was

the most accomplished team performanceof the season with a dominating displayfrom our forward pack. Stand out playersin this game were Ben ‘The Bull’ Madywith some controlled aggressive running,Steve Pilley with his leadership andtackling skills and Harry Househam, whohas managed to progress and get betterwith every game and training sessionalong with his second row accomplishCallum Lightfoot.

We went on to beat Wimbledon College47-0, which saw an enormous amount ofconfidence within the team and powerfulrunning from our backline, ultimatelyreflected on the score sheet with all triesscored by Rougemont, West, Carter andMacdonald. In another closely foughtgame we went down to Tiffin by only onepoint but we managed to close the seasonwith two emphatic wins against ReigateGrammar and Harrodian – the latter gamebeing a great example of what everyplayer in the squad has achieved this yearwith good running rugby and a teamatmosphere that slowly built upthroughout the season.

Jean-Pierre Rives once said “The wholepoint of rugby is that it is, first andforemost, a state of mind, a spirit” and ifthat is the case, this years Under 16s havenot only relished this season but they havebecome better friends, better players andbetter human beings. A very good seasonthat every player will hopefully rememberand be proud of when they look back attheir time at the School.

We always play Emanuel first – we werewell prepared by successful trials and overa week's practice. However, against abigger Emanuel pack we disappointed bygoing down 0-12. Our second match, against Seaford College at home, wasincredibly exciting but we lost 19-22.Turton, Jackson and Duke all crossed the

opponents' line, with both Jackson andSolway converting – but tackling let usdown, and indeed proved to be aweakness in many of our early matches.

Our third match, against Sutton Valence athome, proved equally exciting. We lost 10-17, Sheehan and Jackson dotting down. Wekept our dignity through this match, notbowing to provocation, and for this, specialcommendation is extended to Harvey forexcellent captaincy and command. Ourfourth match was disastrous. AdmittedlyReading Blue Coat is always a toughmatch, but a 0-40 drubbing at home is notpleasant, especially when the differencebetween the opposition and ourselves wasthe art of tackling. We were soundlydefeated by Caterham next, away, 0-26.

November was our changing point. Wenever should have lost to Chiselhurst &Sidcup 10-17. We were the better side, butour organisation let us down. Both Earland Catlow dotted down. Significantpositional changes were offered hereafter.Roberts and Etherington both moved towing, Davies came from the Bs to playscrumhalf, Duke moved to fullback, andShabankareh to centre. Against StDunstan's, Catlow, Turton, Shabankareh,Harvey, Bucks and Evans all crossed thetry-line to secure a satisfying victory 38-5.

The next victory over Dartford Grammaraway, 37-0 was proof that everything wasbeginning to gel; Etherington, Bucks,Ntow-Aninkora and Roberts all scored in amatch where we dominated up front, andwhere Davies shone in his new role.

In our first match after Christmas wedestroyed Wallington 46-0. Bucks, Turton,Solway, Etherington, Jackson and Earl allscored tries in a match which was dominatedby a powerful wind and our soaringconfidence. We linked forward and backlineplay with effortless confidence, and began toplay exhibition rugby. Next was Glyn, whowere a tough, physical side but we secureda satisfying victory of 24-10. It was ourbest performance yet; we played wellagainst a very strong, physical andtalented side – and won.

Against London Oratory in Barnes, we lost5-14. We played organised, controlled rugby, but kicked unwisely and inaccurately. Theloss was keenly felt by all, especially afterwinning the last four matches soemphatically. Bucks scored our only try.The following week witnessed a resurgentside destroy Wimbledon College 70-0. Inmitigation, they did field their B side, but thisdoes not at all detract from the nature of ourvictory. Jackson scored 34 points, scoringsix tries! Shabankareh and Etherington

The team had a difficult year but theattitude of the boys meant that spiritsremained high and there were manypositives to take. Although the teamsuffered some heavy defeats at the startof the season the hard work in trainingpaid off when the boys picked up anexcellent victory against Seaford College.Although we weren’t able to build uponthis victory over the course of the seasonthere was a notable improvement in theperformances and the team played an

excellent brand of rugby. It wasencouraging to see the boys put intopractice the challenging back line movesthat Mr Windle introduced to the side. Theforwards improved their game greatlyand grasped many of the core skills overthe season. Hopefully some of the squadwill be able to take this into next season asthey challenge for a place in the U16 side.

The team was led very well by AngusRobertson who showed great passion andcommitment to Freemen’s rugby. MrWindle also provided valuable assistancein training sessions and was a real assetto the team. On behalf of the squadthanks goes to Angus Robertson, MrWindle and Mr Moon.

dotted down twice each, while Robertsand Bucks also added to our tally with atry each. Analysed, that is 11 tries to thebacks, and one from a forward – indicativeof our forward domination, offering thebacks clean ball to showcase their speed.

The next two matches provided a huge test– against Tiffin we lost 5-24 and againstReigate Grammar we lost 7-17. Theopposition proved powerful, and indeedplayed a similar brand of rugby to ourown, based upon a dominant forwardpack. Earl crossed the Tiffin try-line andCatlow the Reigate try-line, but unfortunatelyour tackling let us down in each match.

We ended the season on a high defeatingHarrodian 41-7, reserving our best rugbyfor our last match. Try scorers includedtwo from Catlow, three from Bucks, and atry each from Shabankareh and Roberts.Jackson slotted three conversions. Thepost-match team talk conveyed the pridein their achievements this season; pride intheir team spirit, and pride in their skills.

A special note of appreciation must beextended to my captain, Michael Harvey, who

led this team superbly, and his professionalattitude was inspirational. From start to finishhis conduct was exemplary offering asense of responsibility to me and the team. The pre-match warm-up drills, the team-talk, his steadfastness and encouragementon the field, the understanding of ourstrengths and weaknesses, and his post-match maturity and civility all speak of ayoung man of outstanding leadership.

All of these boys are superb ambassadorsfor Freemen's. I am proud to have workedwith them. As usual I offer an enormousdebt of gratitude to Messrs Deighton, Mooreand Lang for their unstinting support, coaching and enthusiasm. Likewise, Iexpress a heartfelt thanks to all the parentswho supported and cheered from thetouchline – their encouragement is anotherwonderful feature of Freemen's.

SEVENSWe played in the Surrey competition heldby Caterham School on their OldCaterhamian fields. Our pool matcheswere a shock – we lost to John Fisher 0-38and Halliford 5-22. They were two very

strong outfits, and perhaps ironically weneeded that blasting to wake us up. Itallowed us to play very good sevensthereafter. Being placed third in our pool,we were entered into the Shield tier of theknock-out competition, and came upagainst Esher College in the quarter finals, whom we convincingly beat 31-0. Thesemi-final opposition, Ashcombe Schoolwere beaten emphatically 36-0, and then inthe finals in a thrilling encounter we beatIbstock Place School 22-5. In a repeat oflast year's ceremony, the proud boysclaimed their victors' medals and a smallshield. Jackson was the outstanding playerof this squad, his acceleration over 20metres coupled with his innate reading ofa gap, or an opportunity to put a team-mate away, and a fearlessness in the tackleallowed this squad of boys to excel – andwe did. Once again Freemen's played anexciting, fluent and compelling brand ofsevens rugby.

The team had a successful season not just agood season but a great one. The amount ofdesire within competitive games and trainingsessions was exemplary and the knowledgebase the players have acquired will allowthem to make huge progress in future years.

The season commenced against Emanuel, ahard-fought game finishing 17-17, with triesfrom Pasche, Pilley and Walton. An 11 pointloss to Seaford College led to consolidationwithin squad sessions and this approachled to a demolition of Sutton Valance 31-0,Walton scoring a hat-trick and Penfoldscoring a brace.

Against Reading Blue Coat we conceded 38points, and against Caterham both teamsplayed competitive rugby sadly leading to a24-31 defeat but a very encouraging display.Against St Dunstan’s we out thought abigger side winning 26-7, with tries fromLumsden, Ghosh and Penfold, and againagainst Dartford winning 36-12.

After Christmas we resumed with a fantasticdisplay to beat Willington 31-7 and Glyn 29-7.A strong London Oratory beat us comfortably.Wimbledon College came next and therewere 97 points scored – fortunately wescored 58 with seven different try scorers.

The game that epitomises the season wasTiffin at home – a 5-5 draw with Stringer

crossing the white wash. A tough defensivestructure soaked up their attack and ourtactical awareness exceeded Tiffin’s defence,a pleasure to watch. The final two games ofthe season against Reigate GS and Harrodiancould not have been two different games. We lost to Reigate 17-46 whilst their centrescored six tries, and when we were on theoffensive against Harrodian we had sixdifferent try scorers, testament to our allround ability and cohesive work ethic.

The squad effort to succeed made it apleasure to work with. Tom Slater led theside with all the characteristics a trueleader should employ, Rory Penfold wasthe most influential player and scored vitaltries and used the chip and chase to reaprewards. Stephen Gordon played in anumber of positions and is elusive withthe ball in hand, David Pilley enjoys takingthe ball to the gain line from a platformand Matthew Pasche has made hugestrides and is now a very accomplishedloose forward.

We had high hopes for this season after ourgreat successes of last year. Led by Mr Retzlaffthe team had a good mental and physicalattitude going into each game. We walkedthrough the first few games beating Emanuel,Seaford College, Sutton Valence and ReadingBlue Coat. Pete Wilkes and Ryan Cooper ranrings round the opposition scoring four trieseach against Sutton Valence and alsocontributing in each of the other games. AshleyMarshall was on fire with the boot (11conversions) in the four games.

We then faced a hard run of matches. Firstlyagainst Caterham, where we only won by sixpoints having to defend continuously in thefinal few minutes. We then faced Chislehurstand Sidcup winning by a very narrow marginthanks again to Ashley Marshall. StDunstan’s didn’t put up the same kind offight and the team rolled them over 50-5 withthree players (Callum Room, Ashley Marshalland Elliot Barnes) each getting two tries.

The team travelled to London Oratory andwe knew they would put up a tough fightbut we didn’t realise just how tough it wouldbe. We played some sloppy rugby andcouldn’t keep the ball, resulting in our firstloss in just under two years. Whilst sad, losing is a part of sport and it taught us thatwin or lose we must always hold our headshigh. We won our final match in a ratherscrappy game.

Tim Newhouse led the team enthusiasticallyall season and always managed to keep theteam focussed and determined to maintaintheir unbeaten record. On occasions whenthe match situation was tough Tim cooledthings down and regained the focusgenerally leading to a good fight back.Ashley Marshall controlled the backline andled it always by example.

Thanks must go to Mr Retzlaff for coachingthe team tremendously well, as well as MrBird for coaching the U14 side as a whole.

The team has had a really good season andshould be proud. The hard work put in hasreally paid off this season. Squad sessionswere extremely well attended, with morethan 50 boys attending each session with aprofessional and committed attitude.

The season started against Emanuel whichwe won comfortably as we were on top forthe whole game.

Throughout the season we showed heart anddetermination and we played some brilliantfree-flowing running rugby. We put in someclassy performances against Sutton Valence(46-14), Reading Blue Coat (32-10), StDunstan’s (51-10), Amesbury (38-0),Wallington (50-5), Chinthurst (48-7), Reeds(55-12) and Harrodian (58-14). These werebrilliant games and the boys worked reallyhard to achieve these victories. There weresome very close performances too, includingtwo losses against Caterham (14-19) andChislehurst & Sidcup (14-22) and two winsagainst Glyn (14-12) and Rokeby (34-24).

By the end of the season the players wereunrecognisable in terms of their individualdevelopment and understanding of thegameplan. Our front row of Swinders,Freeman, Kavanagh and Child were solidwith some powerful running and some“classic Swindell” dummies. You know youhave some great front rows in the loose whenthey goose step out of a tackle and run 30yards to score, with Swinders grabbingabout ten tries in the season. In the second

row were Cook, Penteado and Else, whowere awesome in the loose and workedincredibly to win ball. Our back row ofFitzpatrick, Mays, Harvey and Slater weresuperb and although not the biggest wereknocking people about everywhere andJared always amazed us with a bone-crunching tackle each game to inspire histeam mates.

With so much great ball created from theforwards the backs had a much easier ride, being able to ‘mix it up’ with our big varietyof moves. Abraham had a solid season, distributing the ball perfectly to Orchard andmaking the odd sniping break each game, adding a couple of tries to his tally. Richardsand Lumsden were our hard hitting centresthis year, boshing some people out of the wayon the crash ball and making some bone-crunching hits on the opposition. Our wingsof Williams, Boardman and England were thepace of the team. All of our wings developeda taste of crossing the whitewash throughoutthe season; Boardman being our top tryscorer, despite being out with injury for 14weeks of the season; the Williams classic“show him the outside” split some of theteams apart; England’s finishing off ofscintillating team tries added to it. Finally,Sidwell playing at full back showed flashesof excellence with the ball in hand and wassolid under the high ball. Whilst he mightmove to nine next year he is certainly aplayer to watch.

Towards the end of the season, the rugbywe played in the sevens tournamentswas of extremely high quality, butunfortunately we lacked some finishes.Despite this it was a hugely satisfyingseason. Thanks to all the boys that wereinvolved, to Mr Gibson for all his effortsand to the parents (and grandparents) forall their support throughout the season nomatter the weather.

Oliver Orchard

Excellent teams normally have very goodplayers and strong leaders and this was noexception. Orchard was an inspirationalleader throughout the season. His trainingethic is outstanding, from watching andanalysing videos of every game to theintensity and time spent developing hisskill sets. He spoke to the boys like anothermember of staff and produced performancesand team talks well beyond his years.Oliver’s potential has been recognised bythe Harlequins academy and whilst thedepartment and team wish him the verybest, we know he’ll be to a great loss tothe side and School. However, this teamhas plenty of big players and lots ofpotential. It has been a pleasure boys, thank you for making my last Freemen’sside a special one!

Our season got off to the best possible start with a home win.In my three years as U13C coach this was the first time we hadregistered a win in our first game of the season. Pud andPaddy scored tries from close range. Eli Pooley had an absolutecracker of a game and it was not surprising that Mr Chadwickcalled him up to the B team two or three weeks into the season.

The season saw us suffer two heavy losses, at the hands of

London Oratory and St John’s Beaumont. We also drew twomatches against some of our local rivals before notching up aconvincing win against Willington in our final game. I wish allour players the best for the future whether it be as U13B nextseason or as U14s.

The season was a great one for all of theboys. We started on a high with a 5-0victory over Emanuel which was a veryclose game with some great try savingtackles by Vinter and Gamber. We thencame to one of the best performances allseason with a 52-0 victory over SuttonValence with most of the team scoring. Forour remaining games we had our big guy ateight taken away from us. We struggled forthe first half of the next match, with a tensefinish to the game. Goodman convertedtwo important kicks to equal the score andin the dying moments of the game a kickwas sent long downfield by Wilkinson. Weput a lot of pressure on them and Wilkinsongot over the line to win the game. We hadcompleted an undefeated half term.

On our first game back we were stunned byChislehurst & Sidcup and lost our firstgame. However we bounced back stronglywith victories over St Dunstan’s andAmesbury. We lost again to much biggerand stronger sides London Oratory,Wallington and St John’s Beaumont. Wefinished our season on a high withvictories over an U12AReeds side, our localrivals Downsend, Chinthurst and Milbourne.Tom Harmsworth’s debut against Harrodianwas notable for him scoring four tries butthe best performance of the season wasagainst Rokeby when the team combinedto produce some amazing try-scoring play.

Overall it was a brilliant season and I hopethat the future U13Bs have a great seasonwith our brilliant coach Mr Chadwick. To

Our first fixture against St George’s was asteep learning curve. We were selfish inattack and squandered numerousopportunities, whilst in defence we fell offtackles and looked a rather sloppy outfit.

Our next against St John’s Beaumont wewon. It transpired that every otherFreemen’s team had lost against St John’s,so it was an even more pleasing victory.

We picked up some big scalps during theseason. Our most memorable matchesincluded convincing wins against localrivals Downsend and Chinthurst. Apersonal highlight was our match againstCaterham where the forwards were terrificand the backs displayed the type of rugbyI dream of.

Our forwards provided a fantastic platformfor the backs week after week and no matterwho we came up against we would alwaysscore. We occasionally leaked tries but formost of the season we outscored the

opposition and registered far more winsthan losses.

SEVENSAt the Donhead Tournament, we came secondin our group and had to play the eventualwinners in our quarter final and wereknocked out. We witnessed some attractiverugby and started to understand what thiscode of the game was all about.

Four days later we found ourselves at theRokeby Tournament, an event Freemen’slast won in 1994. We made light work ofour group and barely conceded a try in ourpool. Our semi final against King’s was anail biter and not only did we concede ourfirst try, but we also fell behind on thescoreboard for the first time. We dug deepand won 21-14.

We were into the final against ShrewsburyHouse. We scored early on in the final anddefended like troopers for the rest of thegame, depriving Shrewsbury of any tryscoring opportunities. Having attendedthis tournament every year since 2000 itwas one of the most rewarding momentsduring my time at Freemen’s.

The Surreys Tournament is usuallydominated by the strong all boys schools. In our second match of the day we werebeaten by the Mall. For the rest of theevent we were ‘on fire’ crushing everyonewe played. Our semi final against Whitgiftwas one way traffic which gave us hugeconfidence going into the final againstTrinity, a school we had beaten in ourgroup earlier in the day. The first half wasa close run affair and we went into thebreak a try ahead. The second halfhowever was poetic and we produced

some scintillating sevens to defeat Trinityand earn the honour of being crownedSurrey 7s champions.

Our final event of the season was a hometournament. Once again we produced someoutstanding rugby brushing aside schoolslike Cumnor House and local rivals DanesHill convincingly. The final on thisoccasion against Donhead proved a hurdletoo far and we were dealt our biggestdefeat of the season in our final game.

I’m not sure whether another U11 team willever reach the heights achieved by theteam of 2011, but this year gave me enoughwinning memories to last a lifetime.

I would like to thank Mr Moore for hisvaluable input during games sessions andMr Lang for the ‘good cop’ role headopted at the Surrey 7s. They have bothgiven me valuable insight.

To the parents, thank you for your supportthis season, we couldn’t have done itwithout you, and we couldn’t have got toDonhead without you. You were there forus when we were trounced by St George’sand you were there at Rokeby when webroke our 17 year drought. I havethoroughly enjoyed my season as coachand am sure you enjoyed the thrills andspills as much as I did.

Boys, whether you find yourself playing inthe U13As or Bs next year remember, yourLower 4 year will be a chance to reunitethe ‘Dream Team’. Good luck.

The season kicked off in its usual formatwith the Oratory School Tournament forwhich we have had great success in recentyears. The team acquitted themselves verywell getting to grips with the law changesand won two out of five games beating thehosts Oratory and Abingdon.

We then travelled over to St John’sBeaumont losing 10-45. The best way toget over a heavy defeat? Beat local andtraditionally strong Donhead 15-5, withtries from Sidwell, Boardman and Taylor. This was followed by a series of close foughtgames against St George’s, Amesbury andDanes Hill. Unfortunately we were on thewrong side of the score line but these tightgames were the ideal preparation for theannual Cheshire Tour after Christmas. Thisexperience away from families andfocussing on rugby for three full daysallowed the boys to return with a greatdeal more confidence, energy and cohesion.

On their return, superb victories ensuedagainst Chinthurst, Milbourne Lodge andFeltonfleet, all of whom are great scalps.Narrow defeats followed to both Caterham

and Downsend before the traditionallystrong tournament season, with St John’sBeaumont, Cumnor House and Donheadhosting large competitions. With adisappointing display of physicality, westruggled. At St John’s we won one gameagainst The Old Vicarage, and reached thesemi final of the Plate Competition atCumnor House before losing to NewBeacon. However we beat Chinthurst insudden death in the semi-final of theDonhead Tournament and then Donheadin the final to take the Challenge Cup, agreat reward for a long season.

Further games against Rokeby, Lanesboroghand Willington concluded the season and Iam sure the boys learnt a huge amount aboutthe game itself. The success of the team couldnot have been achieved without thecontribution of a few fine young men.Charlie Sidwell brought his outside backsinto the game and always created space.Max Lowrey captained the side, led fromthe front and always committed himself toevery contact situation, Nick Ruddell madehuge strides in his all round game andReuben Rowe dominated opposition withhis competitive edge and hunger. Specialmention must also go to Henry Nice whowas unfortunate at the start of the season tosustain a fractured leg but rarely missed atraining session to watch his friends andteam mates, coached during fixtures andmanaged to make a try scoring return inthe final game of the year. I look forwardto seeing the team progress and wish themluck as U11s.

Spring began with a tour of the NorthWest and three fixtures against TerraNova, Altrincham Prep and SandbachRUFC. Although we lost all three matchesnarrowly, the performances were asignificant improvement. Fred Geen wasthe team’s player of the tour with five tries.

The boys experienced a purple patchfollowing the tour with three consecutivevictories. Chinthurst were defeated 25-5with tries from Geen (3), Tom Hobbs andAdam Taylor. Milbourne Lodge were thenbeaten 40-5 thanks to tries by AranPandian (3), Geen (2), Taylor (2) and AlexJepp. This was followed by our first awaywin at Caterham, with Jepp (2), Pandian(2), Taylor and Tran on the scoresheet.

This winning streak was followed by lossesagainst Feltonfleet, Reigate St Mary’s,Downsend, Rokeby and Lanesborough.

The side finished the season with theirfinest performance – a 45-0 victory overWillington. The defence was superb, withno points conceded, and in attack weproduced some expansive rugby, resultingin scores for Tran (3), Taylor (2),Brandon, Jepp, Phillips and Henry Nice.

This season we assembled a new youngsquad of 14 players in time for the firstfixture which come only days after thestart of the year. Although slightly rustyafter the long summer break, the teamperformance was impressive. The newgroup of girls clearly had huge potentialand the fixture provided the team withconfidence and inspiration for the season.

Sure enough the side rapidly establishedthemselves and before long weresuccessfully scoring goals at one end anddefending them at the other. We dominatedin our first home fixture, beating St John’s10-1, and throughout the season weshowed encouraging development both asindividuals and as a team.

Besides the 1st XI Christmas dinner, theseason highlight came with the U18 SurreyHockey Tournament. We anticipated thatthe first match of the tournament wasgoing to be the toughest, as we were to facehosts and rivals, Epsom College. Althoughapprehensive, the squad performed withoutstanding discipline and intensity, securing a stylish 4-1 win. In the match

debrief, Coach Martin Durban assessed theteam’s performance as the “best he hadever seen a Freemen’s team play”.

The girls ended the season with a matchagainst a confident 1st XV Freemen’sRugby Team. Despite having played somebig matches during the term, this was thematch the girls feared the most. The boyswere stronger, fitter and faster than thegirls, and unless they kept theircomposure, the boys may just have earnedthemselves an ego boasting win. Not longafter the stands had filled with supportersthe whistle blew and the game began. Fora few moments it was unclear which waythe match was going to go, howeverwithin two minutes the girls scored their

first goal, and four minutes later theyscored their second. At the end of the 30minute match the score was 6-0 to the girls. For the team this was a splendid end to ahighly enjoyable and successful season.

On behalf of the team I would like to say amassive thank you to Mr Martin Durhamfor all the time and energy he has investedin us over the years. This was his finalseason coaching at Freemen’s and I knowthat he will be greatly missed by all.

Finally my thanks go to the rest of theteam. It has been a fantastic season andhas provided the perfect end to my hockeycareer at Freemen’s.

Although the team have not had the mostimpressive set of results, we have playedreally well as a team and everyone put inan incredible amount of effort in everymatch that we played. Despite the fact thatwe played numerous A teams from otherschools, we rose to the occasion every timeand refused to let the final scoresdishearten us.

In many of our matches we started at adisadvantage by the fact that ourgoalkeeper, Becky Baker, was unable toplay on Saturdays. However every week a

member of the team would step up to thechallenge and take their turn in goal.

Our second match of the season wasagainst St George’s where we verynarrowly missed a win, drawing 1-1 with afantastic goal from Maia Penfold. After thisgame we lost a series of matches until weplayed Ardingly justbefore Christmas. Atthe end of the first halfthe score was 2-2 andit looked as though itwas going to be adraw until we scoredin the last few minutesof the game makingthis our first and mostexciting win of theseason. One of thehighlights of theseason was a 1-1 drawagainst Harrodianwhich was the lastgame of the seasonand Jennifer Dingscored an exciting goalto secure the draw.

The team have had a really successfulseason and have formed a very strongside. Our first match against Sevenoakswas one of the few we drew. Our onlylosses this season were againstWoldingham where the score was 0-1 andagainst St George’s which we lost 1-3.However these losses motivated us to tryharder in future games.

There were some matches in which wescored a notable amount of goals; such asArdingly and Tormead where we got tengoals in both. One of our best matches thisseason was our penultimate match againstReigate Grammar. We won 3-0 but we all

worked really hard for the win and it wasa highly competitive match. This year wehave worked really well as a team andunder Mrs Clark’s coaching managed toget such a rewarding set of results.

Our highest goal scorer this year was, byquite a way, Zoe Clarke with 25 goals outof 61, followed by Georgina Chapmanwith 10 out of 61. However the whole teamdeserve credit and our defence improvedvery well throughout the year.

We were really pleased to be awarded theTapping Shield for the most successful

team this season. Philippa Nicholls wasawarded the Fowler Trophy for the mostimproved player in the Upper School andEllie Irwin won the Keith Cup for the mostpromising defender with Zoe Clarke themost promising attacker. The team have developed and progressedall aspects of our play throughout theseason due to the excellent coaching wehave received and the challenging matcheswe have played. We began the year wellwith a draw and a decisive win.Unfortunately we then lost to strongopponents St Georges and Reigate but weregained our ground and three successivewins soon placed our hockey in a betterlight. In early November we went to the

Surrey Tournament and our team was ableto prove our worth against some of thebest teams in the county. The first matchversus Epsom College was one of thehighlights of the season and even thoughthe result wasn’t as good as we wished weplayed some of our best hockey. I wouldlike to give a special mention in that matchto Ellie Sloper and Zoe Lyon for theirbrilliant attacking play, the greatcoordination in the midfield and alsoto Julia, Jasmine and our goalieEleanor for a strong defencethroughout the game. We wenton to win three of fourremaining matches and wereplaced third. Other highlightswere the short corners at KingEdward’s and the focus anddedication of the team.

The girls worked incredibly hard thisseason and with some impressive results.Although the season started shakily, witha couple of close losses and a draw, wethen picked up the pace, with a string ofthree impressive wins.

The season started with a fierce matchagainst Sevenoaks. It was a close game, with the final score 0-0. The match madethe team determined and driven to win,and this attitude was continuedthroughout the season, and it was thisdesire to win that came through in ourrecord 7-0 win against Ardingly. There isno doubt though that this win was partly

due to our team’s pre-match ‘hokey cokey’to lift spirits and encourage the team. Ourfinal game of the season was most notable, even though it was a 1-1 draw, as the girlsshowed determination and did not give upuntil the last second of play. Although itwas not a win, this match showed theteam’s true colours of perseverance, willpower, drive and true team work.

A special mention should go to our newmembers who joined this year. Katie Collisis an enthusiastic and wholehearted teammember, with most of her playing takingplace on the attacking side of the pitch, her contribution to theteam was fantastic, scoring many goals for theteam. Nicola Elliot’smidfield position provedterrific for supporting thewhole team. She is askilled player, helping setup many goals, and herconstantly cheery attitudecontributed to the wholeteams mind set. Zoe Elsejoined with little hockeyexperience, but thisproved to be no hindrance

as her constant enthusiasm andpositive outlook meant that her skillsimproved immensely over the season. She is now a confident player and wehope to see all three girls next year foranother terrific season.

We would also like to thank the staffwho helped us and coached us along ourjourney. A special thanks also needs tobe given to the parents who were therewhatever the weather, supporting us andencouraging us and standing by our sidethrough our wins and losses.

The season didn’t start particularly wellwith our first two games lost at home. However we picked it up with a goodmatch against Prior’s Field, which resultedin an 11-0 win. We then had variousmatches against tough opponents but ouronly loss was an unlucky 0-1 defeat bySutton Valence. The IAPS hockeytournament proved a tough day with manystrong sides there. Next we had anothertournament this time at Woldingham wherethe team performed better with three wins, three losses and one draw. Our next biggame was at Cranleigh in a minitournament where we played well and

worked together excellently as a team. Wewon two, lost two and drew one. The twowe lost were against St George’s who area very strong side; therefore I was verypleased with our score of 0-3 (against theirA team) as it was an improvement on the

earlier game in the season against them. This just shows how much the teamimproved through out the season.

The A team have had a highly successfuland winning season only losing withinshort-game play in tournaments and onceto Beachborough Under 13s. We playedexceptionally well as a team anddemonstrated great understanding of eachother’s positioning on the pitch. Rarely didthe ball get through to the goalie as ourmidfield and backs worked in support ofeach other. The speed through the wingsand middle of the pitch enabled the foraysinto the D to be highly successful andoften culminating in a handful of goals.Their tournament play was also verysuccessful: we came third in the IAPScompetition to go through to the nationalfinals (unfortunately cancelled due toweather) and we reached the final for onlythe second time in 14 years of competingat the Arnold School tournament inBlackpool. All our training paid off.

The B squad had a mixed set of results butplayed encouraging hockey throughoutthe season. Again, well done to all thosewho trained hard together and playedwith such spirit in the matches.

The Cs have this year had matches whichenabled every girl in the year group torepresent the school. Well done to all –especially those girls who joined us andwere playing their very first hockey matches.

Our spirits were highuntil we played Beeston Hall. We lost 3-0.However after lunch, we found out thatwe had got through to the Nationals!

In the next round, we played GreshamSchool. They were a very strong team andunfortunately, they beat us 1-0. Next, weplayed Edgeborough in the third placeplay off and this time we beat them 2-0!

The As had a great season with somereally good results. We started off playingin a tournament at Ardingly and won all ofour four games so we were overallwinners. Then we had a tournament athome where the team came second afterlosing to Downsend.

Both the As and Bs travelled to theHawthorns. The As won 5-2 but the Bs

unfortunately lost 2-0. The As thentravelled to Clifton for a tournament, staying overnight to keep everyonefocused. It seemed to work as we got tothe semi finals of the plate competitionand overall, against some strongopposition, we won one, drew two,and lost two.

The As and Bs then had a couple of homegames against Sutton High and Downsend. Both sides beat Sutton High, the Asmanaged to squeeze a goal past Downsendin a nail-biting match, but the B’s lost 3-1.The Cs also played Downsend and won 4-2. In the next fixture against Hoebridge, the opposition proved too strong for theAs on their home ground, beating us 2-0but the B’s secured a 0-0 draw.

At the end of November the As went off tothe IAPS tournament in Hertfordshire. Itgave us some really good experience andwe played well as a team. However we didnot score enough goals so we finishedthird in our group and just missedprogressing to the next round.

In the New Year the As, Bs, and Cs playedDownsend away. The As managed a draw,

the Bs lost 3-0 and the Cs lost 2-1. All fourteams then went off to Danes Hill andunfortunately couldn’t overcome strongeropposition. We then travelled to Christ’sHospital where the As won 4-2 and the Bslost 2-5.

The As then had a tournament atCranleigh so we knew it was going to betough but everyone played their best. Weactually only lost one game, drew threeand nearly progressed to the semi-finals.Overall we finished sixth after penaltystrokes. In the meantime the Bs and Csplayed Hawthorns and Sutton High anddespite some great efforts the Bs lost bothmatches but the Cs won their last match.

The season for the As was rounded off withan excellent 7-0 win against Claremont.Well done to everyone in all four sides forworking so hard against tough oppositionand a big thank you to Miss Bone for allher coaching and support.

There weremany encouraging wins against some verystrong opposition including KCS Wimbledon(17-15), Claremont Fan Court (20-14) andSutton High (15-10 and 10-8). The teamplayed consistently well and worked hard toimprove overall and as individuals byplaying to each other’s strengths. The Firstsalso played in the District NetballTournament held at Rosebery. Out of sixgames, three were won and three werelost, placing us third.

The Second VII, captained by Ayesha Waugh, played a record number of matches this season. This gave more people the opportunity togain experience and match practice.

Another achievement for the netball squadthis year was to be invited to make a speech

at the Leavers’ Sports Dinner. This was thefirst time netball had ever been asked tomake a speech and it shows how much thesport has progressed recently at Freemen’s.At the beginning of the year there was arecord number of attendances at SeniorNetball and this has allowed the squad todevelop and improve a lot.

In the Hawthorns tournament, we playedseven games and won one, drew one andlost the rest. We still played well in thetournament and tried our best but theteams were tough! We had a blast andwere happy to be involved.

Then we played Aberdour. The team wasready and we won 10-2. In the CaterhamTournament the team won three matchesand lost six fininshing tenth over all. During the Autumn term, we were luckyto have Miss Eldridge working with us,putting the girls through their paces eachweek with a series of drills and fungames aimed at improving their passingand shooting skills. Miss Eldridge wasan inspiration to the girls and we were allvery sad to see her leave, but wished herwell as she returned to Australia. We alsohad Alex Willis, an Upper 6 netballplayer helping coach the team eachweek. My thanks to them both for theirdedication and support.

We had a good start to the season whenwe played Feltonfleet at home. The Aswon and the Bs drew, giving everyoneconfidence and enthusiasm. Following

on the As won their next three matchesagainst Dunottar and local rivals,Downsend. There was then a slight midseason drop where we lost againstSutton High and Hoebridge.

Undeterred, we accompanied the girls tothe Caterham Prep U9 Tournament. Despitebitterly cold conditions, this event provedto be a steep learning curve for the team.We lost our first two matches against SuttonHigh and Derwent, but won against NotreDame and Caterham and drew againstHazelwood.

Meanwhile, the Bs and Cs continued towork on their skills during practicesessions, representing the School againstDunnottar, Sutton High and Hoebridge.

U8 NETBALLA Team

B Team

Squad:Whole year group

Both the A and B teams have had arelatively successful season consideringthat in September, many of the girls hadnever played before. With enthusiasticcoaching, all of the girls started to pick upthe basic rules of netball, with their matchplay and awareness of each other on thecourt continuing to improve throughoutthe season. This development was helpedby matches played very early in theAutumn which helped the girls bond as ateam. The girls continued to be well

motivated and started to develop theirpassing and shooting skills with increasedaccuracy. The hard work put in by everygirl should be applauded and the strengthof their improvement, as commented onby umpires from opponent schools, clearlybodes well.

The girls began the season playing awayagainst Feltonfleet. Despite facing strongopposition and both teams losing, the girlslearnt a lot from the mistakes they madeand were determined to come backfighting in their next match. This was athome against Hawthorns in which ourgirls struggled against their powerfulattack, with the As unfortunately losingagain (but by a smaller margin), and theBs holding them to a draw. Our localrivals Downsend again proved strongopposition, but the As were buoyed bytheir first goal of the season scored byAbigail Dopson, from which a huge cheerwent up and determination kicked in.

Spring therefore started with a newlyfound vigour and a renewed team spirit, with the girls having had time to improveconsiderably in all aspects of their game.In the following six games, the A teamconvincingly won five of them, includingthe eagerly anticipated rematch againstHawthorns which the girls won 5-0. Thingswere also looking up for the B team withanother draw against Hawthorns, followedby a superb home win against Reigate StMary’s. The season ended triumphantly forthe As with a convincing 10-4 win againstAberdour – really emphasising the progressmade throughout the year. All the Form 1girls should be incredibly proud of theirachievements as they have certainly come along way from those early days in September. We are now looking forward to hear oftheir successes as they move into the U9s.

With a lot of talent in the younger agegroups this was a season for them to gain alot of experience at first team level. GeorgeMacdonald in Upper 5 became the secondhighest run scorer for the season including94 against Reeds, and with two more seasonsof first XI cricket ahead of him I’m sure hecan outdo himself with the confidencegained from his good form. Only ahead ofGeorge was Fred Davies with 561 runsincluding 100 not out against John Fisher.Fred continues to be invaluable and we arevery lucky to have such a talented youngplayer leading the side next summer.

Marcus Dawes is another young playerwith immense talent; his reliable top orderbatting and off break bowling should serveschool cricket well in his final two years. Also, Alex Culhane showed us how effectivehe is with the ball taking 23 wickets, including two four-wicket hauls. He is alsoone of the louder members of the team inthe field and I hope he carries this forward.

We had a decent season, with many good

performances, including a successful tourof one win and two draws. In the firstgame we salvaged a draw. In this tenseencounter our lower order batsmen rose tothe challenge and held off a fast bowlingattack from Christ’s Hospital – Culhanemaking an important 38 not out.

The second game of the tour was one of thebest team performances of the season; wegot a big total with Davies hitting 96 off 97balls. St Peter’s, York worked hard to reachour total but fell short, just holding on to adraw nine wickets down. We bowled welland although it was disappointing not towin, the performance really showed howgood the team could be.

The last game was a more comfortablevictory against King’s School, Bruton. They batted first reaching 106 for no wicket. Then our bowling came together and Brutoncollapsed, losing all ten wickets for lessthan 30 runs. In his last game for Freemen’scaptain Jonathan Lewis-Oliver came out

with figures of 11 overs, five wickets for 15runs making him leading wicket taker forthe season with 24. In response Freemen’swon the game by nine wickets withMacdonald making 54 not out and Lewis-Oliver 49 not out.

We must thank our coach Neil Stewart forhis work on the team, Mr Moore for hisorganisation and Gary Marshall, forpreparing such good quality wickets everyweek. We also say goodbye to long servingscorer of the first XI, Martyn Holloway-Neville. His contribution has been immenseover the years and the time and devotionhe has put into it all will be sorely missed.

It was a successful end to a season in whichthe team gained a lot of experience whichthey can carry forward. With such talentwithin this team, so long as the commitmentand enthusiasm is there, there could begreat success in the coming years.

The season was a tough one and by usinga squad rotation system we competed in anumber of close games. The first weekendgame perhaps set the tone for the season.Whilst the country was caught up in royalwedding fever a committed bunch ofFreemen's cricketers suffered the agony ofa last ball defeat despite fine efforts fromWilson (bat and ball), Pilley and Lown. Afew more narrow defeats followed beforewe were roundly beaten by a Berkhamstedteam fielding one of surely the quickestbowlers in schoolboy cricket. Despite thedefeat, the game will be remembered forWill Vinter's lower order counter-attackingwhich saw him move into the 30s off just11 balls. The season also saw many ofFreemen’s Upper 6 rugby stars represent

the school for the last time as they dustedoff their whites for their swan songperformance, Ben Reavley stealing theshow with a display of power hitting andclever edges to third man securing 81 from50 balls. Eventually we secured a fine winwhen fielding a development squad awayto Sevenoaks. After restricting them to 80runs from their 20 overs with the help of afine direct hit from Turton on the fine legboundary and one of the best catches everseen from Godfrey, we went into teaconfident of victory. The runs were securedwith the minimum of fuss. This was apleasant end to the season and justrewards for those that had showncommitment to the team.

The season was mixed with a toughschedule and some difficult games.Despite this we managed to win a coupleof games and had some outstandingindividual performances.

Coming off a successful last season therewas always going to be pressure right fromthe first game. We didn’t know what resultwe were expecting against Trinity as theprevious game was rained off. We bowledfirst and with a few early wickets the teamwas expecting a good game. Then withsome big scores from the opposition Trinitymanaged to get 155, an achievable target.Jack Roberts bowled superbly taking fourwickets for 35 runs. We got off to animpressive start as the top four all gotdecent scores. Tom MacConnol 37 andDom Catlow 39. Then, with one of theopposition bowlers taking six wickets,Trinity bowled us all out for 139. We justfell short and it was a disappointing resultgiven the circumstances but overall a goodteam performance.

Reigate Grammar was our second game.We batted first and until the end of theinnings, managing a total of 127 runs helpedby Dom Catlow’s 37. With another earlywicket we started to get confident but thisproved costly as the rest of the top orderbatsmen scored high scores. They reachedour score late in the game which made atense finish. Another close loss for the teambut a few signs of improvement gave usconfidence for the next game.

Our next game against KES Witley was agame we expected to win. KES scored over100 which surprised the team, but still atarget easily achievable. Our two openingbatsmen made big scores to secure the win, with Hugo Solway scoring 58 not out andTomMacConnol scoring 48.

Berkhamsted was next and they batted firstand showed some big hitting with many

players scoring big runs. With a high scoreto beat it looked tough to get a win and westarted off slowly showing a few low scoresbut some runs started to come our waywith Dom Catlow reaching 77.Unfortunately we could not pull off thewin but the team knew we had playersmissing so it wasn’t a disappointing result.

Against John Fisher we came out bowlingfirst and straight away showed some greatperformances. Jack Roberts got threewickets, with Jack Hamer and HugoSolway getting two apiece. We bowledthem out for a low score of 59. With achanged batting order for this game webatted well. Jordan Turton got an impressive33 runs and Alex Duke had a solid gamewith two wickets and batting for ten not out.Other key performances were MichaelSheehan taking two good catches, JonnyEvans bowling a good one wicket for onlyone run scored and Jack Cooper bowlingagain one wicket for only three runs.

We had a 20/20 game next against KCSWimbledon and they showed they had astrong team. They batted a good 154 runs inthe innings and we thought we would haveto bat very well to reach the score. We cameout batting very well with Solway reaching30, MacConnol scoring 27 and Catlowgetting 35 not out. Although we had thosescores we came up short losing by 49 runs.

We had another game against Trinity but itwas in the Surrey Cup. We had some good

bowling performances such as Jack Hamergetting four wickets and a hat-trick. Welimited them to 153 runs. We started battingslowly but well and then unfortunately thegame was called off due to rain so sadlywe lost.

Caterham was our next game and we battedfirst with two top scores of 59 from DomCatlow and 41 runs from Nick Etherington. We pulled of a good score of 167 and itlooked to be a good game. We came outbowling well but could not find a wicket astheir two opening batsmen both got goodscores. Unluckily we lost the game butplayed a very good game.

Our last game was against Reeds. Wehad lots of players missing and only nineplayers in total but we still went out tofinish the game. We batted first and cameup with a score of 58 with Matt Jacksonbatting for 23. With some decent bowlingwe managed to get a few wickets but Reedsquickly matched our score to beat us.

Overall I think it has been a good season. Wehad many great individual performances ineach game and a good all round teamperformance through the season. Many thanksto Mr Bird for coaching us and being ahelpful and good all round coach for the team.

The squad had a respectable year; each playergave his all in every game which resultedin some very solid team and individualperformances. The boys’ enthusiasm andcommitment was second to none whichmade them a very easy and enjoyable teamto have the pleasure of coaching.

The highlight was the away fixture to JohnFisher. After losing the toss and being sentinto the field the boys were keen to get theirfirst win for the season. They didn’t have towait long for their first wicket with GeorgeEarl striking the first blow with a beautifulfirst over of bowling. Not to be outdone,James Salisbury also took a wicket in his

first over leaving John Fisher struggling atfive for two off two. The boys kept thepressure on and with two additional wicketsto Earl, and three from Captain Florentinethey were all out for 96. Chasing was nevergoing to be easy and when openers Wilbyand Earl fell for four and six respectivelythings weren’t looking good. Hugh Wardentered the fray with some aggressivehitting and put the side back into a morecomfortable position, but wickets fellconstantly. Ward eventually fell for 22before Florentine steadied the ship. Afterlosing two more quick wickets, defeat waslooming, Alex Balderstone came in atnumber 10 and against tough bowling fromthe opposition, Florentine and Bladerstonemixed aggression with finesse and lookedto be leading the side out of trouble and tovictory. After Florentine was caught andbowled for 27 it was down to the final pairto win the game. Balderstone held hisnerve and hit the winning runs in the finalover and ended the game on 20 not out.

It was a pleasure to coach the boys

throughout the season and I hope they hadas much fun as I did. I wish them all thevery best for their future years.

Theopposition struggled in reply, finishing on48-5 with two wickets for Michael John.We started our campaign in a very positivemanner.

We started the season against MillbourneLodge. We didn’t field terribly well and webowled too many extras. Despite Butcherplaying so well for his 73 not out, we fell14 runs short of 147.

The next match was against a very strongParkside team in the Surrey Cup. Ourbowling lacked good line and length andParkside reached 112. We had a slow startwith the bat and despite Cuthbert’s solidinnings of 34 not out we fell eight runs short.

Our third game was away at Lanesborough. We started positively with Matt Stanleyachieving a solid innings of 14 and JamesStanley had a cameo of 15 so we achieved93. Lanesborough started poorly. A verygood 22 came from their third batsmen beforebeing bowled by Oliver Chesover-Dennard.

Their five, six and seven scoredsome quick runs and with afew extras they reached 94.

Our fourth game of the seasonwas against Danes Hill. Webatted first and started wellwith the openers Stanley andButcher scoring quick runs.Wilks then came in and hit arapid 40 to boost our total to128. Our opening bowlersstarted well with an earlywicket, but their second andthird batsmen made a good partnershipThey carried on well but fell 15 runs shortof our total on 113 thanks to a very strongfielding performance and Wilks picking upfour wickets and Stanley with two. Thiswas a good victory against a strong side.

In the next game against Cranmore we battedfirst and our opposition paid the price forsome early dropped catches, when Butcherand Chesover-Dennard made 111 in only15 overs. Wilks then chipped in with auseful 24 to keep the runs flowing. Wefinished our innings with a total of 144. Ourbowlers then had a successful start, withCranmore losing five wickets with only 28on the board. They rallied after this andmanaged a total of 110 after a variety ofbowlers had taken the remaining wicketswith some great catches. Another success.

Then we were up against Parkside again, whom we knew by experience were a strongside. Parkside batted first and after an early

run out, their number two batsman made ascore of 73, the backbone of their innings, which left them with a total of 100. Afterlosing an early wicket Stanley and Butchermade a good partnership. Butcher stayed into achieve 38 but we ending up needing toomany runs in the final overs and so wefinished our innings 28 runs short with atotal of 72. A narrow loss to a tough opponent.

Our final game of the season was againstChinthurst. In damp conditions it turned outto be a pitch which favoured the bowlers. Webatted first and with Chesover-Dennardstarring with 34, we finished on a good scoreof 85. Our bowlers started economically butdid not pick up enough wickets to troublethem too much. In a close finish ouropposition narrowly won.

The team had a very good season winning five of the eightgames played. There was no shortage of talent in the side withevery boy being able to contribute with bat, ball and in the field.Co-Captains Max Lowrey and Charlie Sidwell led from the frontin each game and their enthusiasm inspired the rest of the team.Max’s ability to score runs and becoming a Countyrepresentative made him one of the standout players of thesquad. Leonidis Kanavos’ four wickets at Reigate Grammarplayed a major part in that victory. Reuben Rowe’s aggressivebowling and fielding gave us a mental edge over many teams.Ben Boardman was like a brick wall behind the stumps andshowed tremendous displays of glove work, including anincredible four catches in the win against Milbourne Lodge.Henry Nice’s mature contributions in the middle order were attimes, a godsend. His combination of aggressive hitting with asolid defence proved that he was a more than capable batsman.

The boys had their first win in a competitive game in an awayfixture to Milbourne Lodge. After a loss in the following game, the boys were keen to get another win and the home fixtureagainst Donhead gave them just that. They came away with acomfortable six wicket win. Their next game was away toReigate Grammar School. Having only minimal time to recoverfrom their last game it would have been easy to think they mightstruggle, but with Lowrey scoring 28 not out and Kanavos taking

four wickets the boys notched up another victory. With the halfterm break coming just as the boys had put together a few wins itwas thought it may take them some time to find their form again.Their first game back was at home against Lanesborough, and anythoughts of form being lost were diminished as they came awaywith one of their best wins of the year winning by eight wickets. The penultimate game was at home against a strong Parkside team, who in a competitive contest, were the better side on the day. Inthe final game of the season the boys travelled to Chinthursthoping for a final win. The boys put in a fantastic effort for thelast game and came away with a well-deserved victory.

U8 CRICKET

Squad: Entire Year Group of Boys

For the first time in school history anUnder 8 team took the field in three

competitive games against local rivals. The primary aim of Under 8 cricket is tointroduce the pupils to the complex skillsof the game and also integrate them intothe Under 9 teams but due to the numberof pupils in Form 1 several extra fixtureswere sourced.

The team produced victories againstDownsend and Milbourne Lodge and

were narrowly defeated by Danes Hill. All pupils in Form 1 attended squadsessions and formal exposure to thegame at a young age will only benefitall concerned.

The team started the season with the usual trip to DonheadLodge for a pair’s version of the game. Blooding several pupilswho had not played A team cricket before the boys both battedand bowled well and displayed their desire to succeed in thefield. This resulted in a win by 43 runs, a significant amount inpair’s cricket. Two weeks later the team played Lanesboroughand although bowling with accuracy and variation they did tendto lapse in concentration in the field which allowed the visitorsto win by a narrow margin.

Following half term and a number of pupils benefitting from aweek’s intensive cricket course, the team remained unbeatenfor the remainder of the season beating local rivals Downsendby 39 runs. This was the teams first experience of the ‘hardball, out is out’ format of the game as the team showed greatcharacter to defend their total. The boys then beat Reigate StMary’s by 19 runs and went into the final hard ball games withthe best preparation possible.

Two great victories against Milbourne Lodge and Danes Hillusing the hard ball completed the season and one which can beclassed as a successful one. Ben Butcher captained the side withknowledge and understanding, Jack Hamilton continued toimpress with the ball as did Oliver Turner with the bat. PeterBoardman made superb levels of improvement throughout theseason and many others including those Form 1 boys whomade the step up to U9 cricket all contributed to the greatresults.

Mr Andrew Bird

The squad had a good season with many of the boys playing theirfirst game of competitive cricket. The boys travelled away to DonheadLodge for their first hit out of pair’s cricket, showing good potentialwith both bat and ball. Up against a strong side, they did a great jobshowing fantastic enthusiasm in the field and good performanceswith both bat and ball. Donhead however, proved to be the strongerside on the day and won in a hard fought game.

The first home game against Lanesborough, and buoyed by a goodprevious performance, the boys were keen to impress. A strongperformance from both sides ensured an exciting game withLanesborough running out winners by 18 runs in a tight game.

The boys were keen to get a win in their second home game againstDownsend, but although they played with a high level ofenthusiasm, Downsend were far too strong and ran out with aneasy victory.

The next fixture was at home against a strong Reigate St Mary’s side.Looking to improve on previous performances and get their firstwin, the boys played one of their best games and in a very closegame came out victorious by two runs.

The final two games were against Milbourne Lodge and Danes Hillwith strong performances in both games.

Towards the end of the season, a number of Form 1 boys played theirfirst game and showed great potential. A vast improvement was madeby all members of the squad who will benefit greatly from thisexperience.

We had a mixed set of results during ourseason. Everyone played really well in thefirst match against Harrodian – we wonnine games to zero. It was a great way tostart. Then we played Christ’s Hospital, and the As won 6-3, and the Bs lostnarrowly 5-4. Cranleigh is a very strongschool when it comes to tennis, and theybeat the As 8-1 and the Bs 9-0. 8-1 wasagain the score in the next match for theAs against St Mary’s, however this time we

won. Unfortunately oncemore, the Bs lost 9-0. Our lastmatch was against EpsomCollege. It was raining andquite windy but we still allenjoyed it as the scores werevery close, and as a result Ithink it was a great match toend the season with. The Aslost 5-4, and the Bs won 5-4.

Additionally, the top four players in the Ateam played in the Aegon League. Thiswas Zoë Clarke, Georgina Lascelles, SamEarland, and me. When we played anotherschool we would all play a singles matchjust to one set, and then we would playdoubles to one set. We played the RoyalSchool, Kingston, and Sutton High.Against Kingston, we all won our singlesmatches and so didn’t have to play anydoubles. Incredibly, we got to the finals of

the league having played only threematches, but unfortunately couldn’t playin it as the term was very short andextremely busy, so there were hardly anydays that we were all free. Overall, theseason was really enjoyable for all of usbecause, even though we did lose a few, everyone tried their best which lead to agood quality of tennis being playedthroughout the team.

For senior sportswomen, the start of theSummer term means the start of the longawaited tennis season, which we enteredwith the same enthusiasm and excitementas always. The seniors’ commitment totennis was better than ever, making my jobas captain an absolute pleasure. In themidst of the busiest term of the year, wepractised regularly at squads and gamessessions, honing our ground strokes, volleys and serves for the matches ahead.Every year, Freemen’s face the oppositionof some of the largest schools in Surrey, and this year was no exception. The seasonsaw a cracking victory against Christ’sHospital, against whom the first VI won animpressive eight out of nine matches, withthe second VI and third VI also winningconvincingly. The first and second VI alsobeat our local rivals St John’s, whichproved to be a satisfying victory for all.The only loss of the season was againstCranleigh. Yet the score did not reflect thequality of play: facing the challenge of

their talented team meant that all threesenior teams played some of the besttennis of the season, and put up amarvellous fight.

Unfortunately, tennis is a weatherdependent sport, and the variable summerweather resulted in the cancellation ofseveral fixtures. Despite this, the Upper 6have fond memories of tennis squad in theintermittent rain: a sign of true dedication!

In addition to inter-school fixtures, weenjoyed a number of other friendly events.House Tennis was as competitive as ever, with the heated rivalry ensuring closegames throughout. The competition wasfierce, but Whittington took the victory, coming out on top for the third yearrunning. We also enjoyed the company ofthe City Livery Members, joined by someof our best senior boys in an afternoon offriendly matches against the ladies andgentlemen of the Livery Companies. The

event was followed by a wonderful tea atMain House, at which I was kindlypresented with a City Livery Award forcontribution to tennis: a lovely symbol ofall of the memories I have enjoyed playingtennis at Freemen’s. Members of Lower 6were even lucky enough to enjoy a day outat Wimbledon during the Championships, the second successful trip of its kind, and amemorable experience for tennis fans.

2011 was yet another fantastic season, fullof successes, enjoyment and enthusiasm.I certainly feel, as do the other Upper 6players, that my tennis career at Freemen’sended on a high note. I would like tothank all of the players for their dedicationand contribution, and Miss Ridley forher unwavering help, support andorganisation. Let’s hope next seasonwill be one to match it!

This year both teams have put in atremendous amount of effort anddetermination with the As winning fivematches out of eight and the Bs winningtwo out of three. The highlight wasperhaps the A and B teams’ doublevictory over local rivals Epsom Collegein which we won 16 out of 18 individualmatches. The As also recorded victoriesagainst Christ’s Hospital, Sutton High,Harrodian and St John’s, whilst the Bs werealso victorious against Christ’s Hospital.

Aside from the excellent results, another

highlight was theoutstandingteamwork, enthusiasm andpositive spiritdisplayed by bothsquads throughoutthe season. A greatexample of this wasthe last Amatch ofthe year against StJohn’s where eventhough St John’sboasted two verystrong individualplayers, the squadrallied together todeliver aconvincing 12-4victory.

Congratulationsand thank you toboth squads for asuccessful andenjoyable season. Thanks also to MrsClark for coachingus so well andputting together aset of partnershipsthat really gelled.

Our first match against St Catherine’s,traditionally a strong tennis school, despite

playing their B team we lost 4-0. Our matchagainst Danes Hill was a much closer affair. It went down to the final match of the daybut we narrowly lost 4-5. Despite the loss, itwas apparent that the team were becomingmore confident at working out theiropposition’s weaknesses and starting tocommunicate with their partners on court.

Our next two matches were both leaguematches. We put in a confident display againstThe Royal School winning the tie convincingly4-1 to earn our first win of the season.

Our match against Priors Field was a closefought affair. We managed to winthree out of the four singles matchesand only needed to win one of thetwo doubles matches to win thematch overall. In what felt like thelongest match in history – with everyother player, mum, dad and coachwatching anxiously – we managed tobreak serve in the crucial ninth gameand in the following service gameheld on to record the win.

Our last two matches were bothfriendlies against schools we playevery year. We generally do well

against Dunnottar and after our two recentwins I decided to rest two regular A teamplayers and give two girls a chance who hadmade terrific progress at squad. However, welost the match 5-4. Despite the loss, I felt theplayers gave a decent account of themselvesand perhaps lost due to lack of matchexperience rather than being outclassed bythe opposition.

Our final match was against St Mary’s Ascot.Last year as U12s, St Mary’s had destroyed us9-0. This year we picked up three wins, whichwas a terrific improvement. Apart from the Ateam showing just how much progress theyhad made in a relatively short space of time, what was just as rewarding was watchingsome of our B team playing their first evercompetitive match and being able to serve theball in – something which seemed highlyunlikely at the start of the season.

I thoroughly enjoyed working with thisgroup of girls and although every Thursdaytennis squad would result in us all institches, somehow we managed to play sometennis and improve at the same time. Welldone ladies.

Junior BoysA large number of boys have represented theswimming squad this year. They lost toDownsend 189-220 early in the year andthis result was repeated againstHawthorns. We then hosted Harrodianwhich resulted in the first victory of the year.Cranmore and Cumnor House then visitedAshtead Park for a triangular event andswam in a positive manner throughout theevent and were worthy winners of two agegroups, but sadly finished third overall.

In Spring we beat Hazelwood 57-39 andalso Danes Hill 398-395 with the resulthinging on the final squadron relay whichreally did provide a spectacle, especiallyafter 64 previous events. Two further galasagainst Cumnor House and Cranmorefollowed and again resulted in two narrowdefeats, not ideal preparation for the thirdannual preparatory schools swimmingfestival which was the final event of the

season. The boys finished as winners, agreat achievement, beating Hawthorns,Cumnor House, Cranmore, and Hazelwood,a superb way to finish the season and thefirst time the boys have won this eventwhich includes over 160 swimmers.

Senior BoysThe strength in depth of swimming is oftenoverlooked but with the results this yearonly highlights this. Victories came againstReigate GS (200-136) a superb victoryagainst Sevenoaks (252-220) and prior toChristmas we defeated St John’s in their ownpool (181-168). During Spring the boyscontinued their success by beatingHarrodian, Reeds and Reigate GS for thesecond time but did not manage to maintaina 100% win rate as they lost to a very strongSutton GS team (203-218). A very pleasingseason with a large number of Upper 3 –Upper 6 pupils representing the team on aregular basis and a greater number of pupilsattending early morning squad sessions.

I would like to extend thanks to all pupilswho have captained teams, the PE andGames staff who assist with specific teams,Dan Cross our swimming coach andfinally Mr Richard Garfield our schoolswimming consultant.

In galas throughout the year, almost all squadmembers have competed, even though theU10 squad has probably the greatest numberof girls attending in Freemen’s history!Noise levels have usually been very highin the cheering department but everyone’sdedication has resulted in many victories.Due to the depth of talent to choose from wehave been able to swimA, B and C teamsand have had a couple of joint galas withthe boys this year. Memorable galas includethose we won against Danes Hill andSutton High and our close defeat againstHarrodian and a draw with Hazelwood.

AthleticsTOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW!The 2011 Central Surrey District AthleticsCompetition was on Tuesday 17th May. Thegirls were still riding high from a clean sweepat last year’s event where they won boththe Junior Girls’ and Intermediate Girls’titles by a large margin.

The U15 team saw the departure to theolder age group of many of the key athletesfrom last year’s winning team, leaving themsome very large shoes to fill!

First class performances from Zoë Lyon (firstin the Javelin), Emily Stewart (second in theLong Jump and High Jump), Amelia Reed(second in the 800m) and Aila Diffey (secondin the 200m and fourth in the Hurdles)secured a good base of points.

Other performances of note and in the pointsscoring zone came from Katharine Curran(third in the Discus), Jasmine Stephens(fourth in the 1500m), Gabrielle Eglen (sixthin the Javelin) and Tabitha Read Cayton(sixth in the 800m).

Two Upper 3 athletes joined the team on themerit of their qualifying times: Georgia Westfinished seventh in the 1500m and MaiaDiffey narrowly missed the cut off for herfinal in the 100m. Both will provide a strongbase of experience for the girls that will jointhem in next year’s Lower 4.

The U15 event was to be decided by therelay with very little separating the two topteams. Unfortunately we lost out by undera second to Manor House who won the relay, forcing us, for the first time in three years, toreturn without the Under 15 shield. We’ll besetting our sights on reclaiming it next year!

The U17 team suffered many casualties as anumber of GCSE girls opted out due toexam preparation. As a result we lost twohigh jumpers, an 800m runner, a 200mrunner, a Javelin thrower, a Shot Putter, aHurdler, a 100m runner and three of therelay team. Not to mention the girls whowere too old this year. Special credit must begiven to the versatile, well organised andcommitted Upper 5s who came along andrepresented the school on the day. Well doneto Francesca Crabtree, Hannah Anderson andKate Holmes – an inspiration to future years!

The Lower 5 stepped up to the challengewith a little help from Celia MacDonaldwho moved up an age group to fill the800m place – finishing a creditable sixth. They showed that despite being from the

As a reflection of our number of participants,House matches have been successfullystaged at Junior and Senior levels withboth A and B teams from all houses.

All this would not have been possible withoutthe high quality coaching given by MrMatthew Dean, Mr Neale Thomas and MrBryan Lewis, mostly after school, but also at

lunchtime and during senior games. Pupilsand their parents give up a great deal of theirtime and effort to make all these astonishingresults achievable.
