Kia Ora Koutou
Nau mai ki te Kura Tuarua o Tarawera. Welcome to Tarawera High School.
Tarawera High School were delighted to have the Associate Minister of
Education Tracey Martin visit the school on 2 July to see the new national
register of student learning support need and resourcing in action (Te Rito). The
register is a key component of the Learning Support Delivery Model that
provides an accessible, flexible, child-centred and connected approach to
learning support and wider social, disability support and health services.
Learning Support Coordinator for Tarawera High School, Deb Ninness has
worked closely with the Ministry of Education including during Lockdown, Level
4 via Zoom communication to ensure our students were placed on the register
as part of this initial rollout.
Previously schools across the country have not had a full picture of what
specific needs individual students have as they move through the various
schools they attend throughout their educational journey.
"When this programme is fully up and running local
schools and communities will know what they need for
their children, the Ministry of Education will know how
this looks at a national level and the Government will
have a far better picture of how programmes are
working and how students are being supported."
Minister Martin said.
It will work with schools in areas such as Kawerau, to
ensure that the completion of the learning support
register at contributing schools allows the learning
needs of students to be identified prior to arrival at a
new school. This gives staff the opportunity to utilise the
register and explore innovative ways to improve the
learning outcomes of our rangatahi as they arrive at
Tarawera High School.
Hockey
Year 7/8 hockey team played their
first game of the season against
Whakatāne Intermediate Teal,
students had fun and showed
improvement as the game went
on. Well done to Wamarie
Tamatea who was the ‘Player of
the Day’.
Basketball
The Year 9-10 Junior boys basketball competed in the Bay of
Plenty Basketball Champs last week. They played three games
throughout the day winning one game and losing two, both

Girls Rugby
Nineteen girls travelled across
to Mount Maunganui to play
at Blake Park. They started off
on what felt like an even par of
abilities with Mount Maunganui
scoring first up and then
followed up by Kirimiria Timoti
scoring for us not long after.
Every student had an
enormous amount of fun regardless of the outcome, the team
was co-captained by Kayse Takurua and Cairo Herbert.
1st XV Rugby
The 1st XV rugby team geared up
to play Tolaga Bay Area School at
Tarawera Park. This was their first
game for the competition round.
There was a lot of excitement on
the side lines and the teams were
very well matched with the score
resulting in a draw of 24.

Newsletter 2020 Term 2
Remembrance Hikoi- ETHAN FITZPATRICK
(2.10.2003 -19.3.2020) Last term we were faced with a painful
and devastating situation we could never
have imagined. We gathered as a school,
to remember the life of Year 12 student,
Ethan Fitzpatrick, a young man, a son,
grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and
friend who was unexpectedly taken from
us at Lake Rotoma.
Saying good bye is never easy, we are
feeling emotions that are deep and
complex. In our hearts there is love; the
pain of loss, and profound loneliness. The
timing of his passing was made all the
more difficult, as Ethan left us and then the school closed for
COVID level 4 lockdown and the opportunity to grieve
together was lost.
On Thursday 2 July with the support of local Kaumatua Hori
Raerino, Minister John Clarke, and Kaikaranga Kutiwera Te
Maipi; members of staff, students, whānau, BOT, and
community members started their journey of healing. Leaving
school after karakia, cars and vans made their way to the
lakeside where a beautiful and fitting tribute was paid to
Ethan. Counsellors and fellow colleagues were with the group
to āwhi Ethan’s teachers and peers through this most difficult
time of returning to the lake.
As we said our goodbyes, we lay flowers, some entered the
water, we sang, we prayed and memories were shared;
Ethan’s laugh, his infectious enthusiasm, his cheeky
demeanour, his hopes and dreams. That is what defines a life
and creates a legacy. Nothing that is loved, is ever lost and no
one who has touched a heart, can really pass away because
some beauty lingers on, in each memory of which they’ve
been a part. While we are sad to go on without Ethan, we can
give his death a powerful meaning and keep him alive in our
hearts.
Early Childhood Education
Students that study Early childhood Education at Tarawera
High School are required to complete a six week placement at
an Early childhood Centre. Te Maungarangi is very popular
with the kiddies at Pūtauaki Kindergarten, as soon as he
arrived a group of children ran up to him and gave him a
warm welcome.
Future Leaders The Bay of Plenty Education Trust’s
Future Leaders Programme has
been specifically created to help
selected secondary school students
who are determined to develop as
a leader and will commit to develop
their leadership skills. Opal and
Alysha were nominated to attend
the programme and will participate
in four one-day workshops.
Attitude Attitude visited our school again with a hiss and a roar! This
time we were greeted by Tamatea who had whānau
affiliations in the area even though he travelled up from
Christchurch. He made himself known with a quality, humorous
introduction to grab the students attention from the very
beginning. Attitude deliver important messages around
hauora and growing up, and the Year 7 and 8's had the extra
treat of spending more time with him in a workshop setting. He
also loved playing ball with the older boys at interval.
Homework Club
Chromebooks are available to use and Teachers
are there to assist.
Duke of Edinburgh The Duke of Edinburgh award is an
international award that you can
achieve here in NZ. You can start
your Bronze Award in the year that
you turn 14. Create your own
programme by choosing an activity
in each of the first three sections of
the award; Service, Physical
Recreation, Skills and Adventurous
Journey. You can continue with
activities you’re already taking part
in, such as sports or volunteering, and
count these towards achieving your
award, or your award could be an
opportunity to try something new and
develop a passion for something
different. The Bronze Award is the first
step to getting involved in The Duke
of Edinburgh’s International Award.
Matariki has worked very hard and
achieved the Bronze Award recently
presented to him at Assembly.
