OHIO UNIVERSITY SPORTS ADMINISTRATION GRADUATEPROGRAM & THE CENTER FOR SPORTS ADMINISTRATION

Ranked #1 in the World

Under the direction of Executive Director, Jim Kahler, OhioOhio University’s Sports Administration program was ranked number one in the world by SportBusiness Inter-

national. The postgraduate sports course ranking (2012) is the first-ever authoritative assessment of teaching in the sector of postgraduate education catering for the business of sport. The ranking assessed courses that were Master’s level and above, 100 percent covering the business of sport, and have been rrunning consecutively for more than three years. Ohio Univer-sity was the sole course provider to place 100 percent of its graduates in full-time jobs within the sports industry just 12 weeks after graduation.

History & Background

A man of many talents, Walter O’Malley was a baseball pioneer. He anticipated the expansion of baseball to the West Coast, moving the Brooklyn Dodgers to Los Angeles prior to the 1958 season. Considered an owner ahead of his time, O’Malley oversaw the development and construction of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Lesser known, yet still profound, was O’Malley’s role in the formation of the world’s first sports administration program at Ohio University. Founded in 1966 by Dr. James Mason, its mission was to provide an education that develops well-trained and highly educated administrators in the sports

and entertainment industry. Inspired by O’Malley, the program focuses on crafting a high-level business curriculum that also possesses a unique application to sport. In the 1950s, O’Malley and Dr. Clifford Brownell, a professor at Columbia University conversed numerous times regarding the business of baseball. Ever the pragmatic businessman, O’Malley lamented the lack of properly trained administrators for the Brooklyn Dodgers (the organization that O’Malley had been majority owner and general partner since 1950). More specifically, the Dodgers lacked well-trained prprofessionals in the business related functions. O’Malley believed that if a university could train students in such areas as contract negotiation, facilities management, and marketing those individuals could contribute to a more efficient and effective sports organization. Remembering these conversations, Brownell later recounted them to James Mason, a doctoral student who Brownell advised at Columbia. After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Mason took O’Malley’s revolutionary idea and brought it to life, founding the world’s first sports administration program at Ohio University in 1966. From its budding days in the mid to late 1960s to present day, the sports administration program dedeveloped a reputation as the place for aspiring sports execu-tives to gain industry knowledge and build the foundation for their future jobs in the sports and entertainment industries.

JIM KAHLER HAS ELEVATED THE PROGRAM TO NEW HEIGHTS... STRENGTHENING CON-NECTIONS BETWEEN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY, ALUMNI, FACULTY, AND CURRENTCURRENT STUDENTS.

NCAA President Mark Emmert (center) meets with dual degree MBA/MSA students from the Sports Administration program at Ohio University during a visit to Wright State in Dayton, OH. Facilitating the experience was Christina Wright, Assistant Director of Educational Programs - NCAA (Ohio University MSA '10) pictured far left.

In addition to Dr. Mason’s early inspiration and vision, the Ohio University program has enhanced its position within the industry over the years thanks to the leadership of its coordi-nators/executive directors: Dr. William Stewart (1969-1977), Dr. Charles Higgins (1977-1994), Dr. Andrew Kreutzer (1995-2005), and Jim Kahler (2005-present). Under their direction, the program has expanded allowing students to gain extensive industindustry experience, notable leadership skills, and an all-en-compassing understanding of business professionalism. The Sports Administration program would not be where it is today were it not for the foundation that Dr. Charles Higgins created. Under his direction the program turned a group of students into a family and it is this culture that sets Ohio University apart from competitors. Moreover, the idea for an annual alumni directory began with Dr. Higgins. To date, there are over 1,200 alumni within the sports industry, and eveveryone who has graduated is listed in the directory. Dr. Kreutzer further advanced Ohio University’s Sports Administration program in 2001 when a Master of Business Administration (MBA) was offered in conjunction with the already prestigious Master of Sport Adminis-tration (MSA). Jim Kahler has elevated the Sports Administration program to new heights as its Executive Director. Created in 2005, the Center for Sports Admin-ististration was established with the purpose of strengthening connec-tions between the sports industry, alumni, faculty, and current students. In the fall of 2011, the program advanced even further by integrating MBA and MSA courses so that students could complete both degrees simultaneously. Over the past several years, the Sports Administration Program has partnered with several sports business organizations to enhance incoming students' practical experience. The fellow-ship program provides incoming students with a year’s worth of industry experience prior to starting the MBA/MSA dual-degdual-degree program. In 2010, the program also welcomed its first class of Professional MSA students. The Professional MSA program enables industry executives who have a minimum of three years sports business experience, to pursue their MSA degree by taking online classes that are designed to meet the needs of practicing sports professionals. The program is also unique in that it allows the Professional MSA students to interact with on-campuson-campus students during on campus residencies, profes-sional conferences, and in their academic work. This integra-tion provides the on-campus students with the opportunity to

gain first hand experience working with industry profession-als, while the Professional MSA students can showcase their skills and experiences as both groups work together to solve real industry problems. Throughout Ohio University’s Sports Administration program’s history, there have been many developments that have solidified its position as the world’s premier postgradu-ate sports education. The program’s commitment to excel-lence can be seen on all levels from its standard of placing 100 percent of its graduates in jobs upon graduation or in recog-nizing the exceptionally high level of success of its alumni. The program has made great strides since its inception in 1966; however, the potential for growth is unlimited, especially in an ever-evolving industry that requires leaders who possess the motivation to face the challenges of the future.

Maybe its because it is a mix of students and global sports executives from all areas of business, maybe its because the setting is a college campus, maybe its because the combina-tion of those two give the speakers a chance to be a little more loose and free thinking with ideas, but for the seventh straight year the Ivy Sports Symposium topped itself as one of the most unique and comprehensive one day gatherings on the sports business calendaon the sports business calendar. This year’s event was held at Columbia University for the first time, after a one year stop at the University of Pennsylva-nia and five years at Princeton University, and the over 100 speakers and 600 attendees were treated to a day of open conversation, leadership ideals, networking and sharing of best practices from areas ranging from social responsibility to new media to finance to team and league governance. Enjoy the pictorial.

Holly Koski, Editor in Chief and Host of Sports Business Now for Row27

However, she does admit that male dominated professions will involve stereotypes and inequalities, and advises young women not to be naïve to these things, but to continue to be who you are and use your femininity as a strength and a way to gain respect. Ashley said, “You’re going to be judged more harshly and quickly, what you say and do is going to be analyzed more closely…no matter how smart you are people just won’t think you’re as good as a man would be.”would be.” Ashley believes that networking is the key to finding new oppor-tunities and you must be persistent in reaching people because they may not return calls or emails the first time or even the second around. More than anything Ashley advises to don’t give up. The sports industry is a very competitive field and you must be “laser focused” to be successful. Ashley Millerick is a young woman that is going against the grain. She has shown first-hand what it takes to become a female sports agent in a male dominant field. It is women like Ashley who will continue to open the floodgates for more young women who are interested in working in sports.

Holly Koski, better known as “The Sportsinista”, lives, eats, and Holly Koski, better known as “The Sportsinista”, lives, eats, and breathes sports on a daily basis. She is currently employed at Row27, a digital sports marketing company based out of Minneapo-lis that specializes in the creation of team introduction videos, TV spots, ticketing microsites, and social reward programs for teams across the world. However, Holly’s main position at Row27 is Editor in Chief and Host of Sports Business Now, a blog and network that focus on the best practices and latest trends in sports. She is responsible for managing editorial staff of writers and also for creating and promot-

ing content of the company through social media outlets. Holly is also the host of a series of shows on the Sports Business Holly is also the host of a series of shows on the Sports Business Now network where she sits with industry experts and discusses the latest news developments in sports. Not only does Holly work with Row27, but she also promotes her own blog, “The Sportsinista” dot com, where she writes her own articles on happenings in the sports world. Does this young woman not do it all? Majority of Holly Koski Majority of Holly Koski’s opportunities have sparked from social media. Oh how we love Twitter! During college, Holly interned for the Minnesota Lynx (WNBA), Leverage Agency, and most notably Sports Networker dot com, where she was the face, literally, of their logo on Twitter. She was responsible for managing a team of writers, while also producing content for the site as their online marketing intern. Holly Holly’s involvement in industry chats on Twitter allowed her to show her expertise and opinions, and also to build her social network followers. The opportunity with Sports Networker ultimately led to Holly’s interview and eventual hire with Row27. She notes, “Just goes to show you that you’ll never know when or where you’ll meet your future employer.” As for women trying to break into the sports industry, Holly has named “getting involved in social media” as the highest recommen-dation. She endorses following the sportsbiz hash tag on Twitter because of the surprising ways in which you can become connected to people within the industry and also because of the difference in appearance you can make amongst peers. Being hungry and passionate about your love for sports, especially as a female, is Holly’s second recommendation. Holly shared that, “There are stigmas out there that women don’t know sports. It’s sad, but true.” This is not to say that dreams can’t come true. Women must outwork the competition and show that they are just as competent as men. “Be as knowledgeable as you can about the industry so the ‘just another pretty face’ comment is a statement without merit” says Hollwithout merit” says Holly. Lastly, Holly says don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one ever has all of the right answers, but knowing someone else in the places you want to go can make a significant difference. Feel free to tweet Holly at @TheSportsinista or even email her at [email protected], even just to say hi! Holly Koski is another female in the sports industry slowly but surely making a name for herself, with a willingness to help other young ladies do the same. Look out for her in the future!
