Spotlight on the First Floor

In the Office with Mrs. Booth

By: Marissa Cappiello

Mrs. Booth started as the full-time secretary at St. Bernadette School last school year. She became sec-retary because she likes helping kids and working in an office at-mosphere. She started as a volun-teer and worked in the office for 16 years. Mrs. Booth likes working on the first floor close to the kin-dergarteners. “I get to listen to their songs,” Mrs. Booth says.

Earlier this month we talked to Andrew Flanagan and Gabriel Losacco, our Sixth Grade Student Council Representatives.

Andrew Flanagan is a very hard-working young man who is always trying to be a part of things and helping others. He wanted to become a Student Council member because

he wants to help more people. This is his second year as a representative. He was very nervous at first because he didn’t know if everyone would accept him as a member, but when he was elected, he was very excited to start. Andrew has done a great job helping our school become a better place.

Gabriel Losacco is one of our newest students at St. Bernadette’s. He wanted to become a Student Council

member because, like Andrew, he enjoys helping people. When he was elected he was thrilled, but also sad because his other friends didn’t win. Gabriel is a kind-hearted, smart, and generous person. He is planning an Ice Cream Day in the spring to help raise money for our school. We look forward to the rest of the year with these two as our class representatives.

Getting to Know Our Sixth Grade Student Council Reps

The first floor is currently blooming with activities and fun crafts preparing for the upcoming holiday season! Mrs. McKee's Pre-K 4C class has been working very hard for their Christmas Show! Each student has been preparing for their own parts, and they will all be wearing headbands to portray his/her character.

One of the class' favorite things to do is make decorations for the Christmas Show and creating gifts for their moms and dads. They are working on an act a for the Jingle Ball, but that's a Christmas Surprise we must wait for! The Pre-K 4C class is very active in playing games and learning to work together to figure something out. A great example is "Tell and Show" which they enjoy very much. Every student creates 3-4

clues on an index card with their parents. Mrs. McKee then whispers each clue to the students one by one. The child repeats it to the class and the class then has to work together to figure out what the object is.

The Pre-K 4C class is very fun to hear about, but let's shine some of that spotlight over to Mrs. McKee! Mrs. McKee never knew she'd become a pre-school teacher, she always taught different grades until she assisted our fellow 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Montie in a pre-school class one day and knew she had found the thing she loved to do most!

The first floor is most definitely just as active as the older grades, so let's give them a big round of applause for being in the spotlight!

There are approximately 25-30 million

Christmas trees sold in the U.S.

every year. The states that produce the most

Christmas trees are Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan,

Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The first Christmas tree lights

were produced in 1890. For every Christmas tree that is harvested,

three seeds take its place. The ever-green tree was an ancient symbol of life.

A Night Divided

by Jennifer Neilsen

Review by Bridget Grazel

Gerta, a twelve year old girl, lives in East Berlin. In 1961, a wall was built between East and West Berlin overnight. Gerta, her mom, and her older brother, Fritz, are on the east side, while her dad, and her middle brother are on the west side in search of work. Their family is separated, and Gerta is very upset. One day, while Ger-ta was walking to school, she sees her dad standing on a raised platform look-ing above the wall. As Gerta walks past, her dad starts dancing a particular dance from her childhood. Except, he changes some of the moves into dig-ging motions. Gerta isn’t sure whether he forgot some of the moves or wheth-er this might be a sign for her to dig.

I liked this book because I enjoy exciting stories about certain times in history. This book takes many twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it. I rec-ommend that you read this book be-cause it is certainly one of the best I have ever read. It shows how far some people will go to reunite with their family.

Our Volleyball Season By: Lizzy Hennessy

The girls volleyball season was a lot of

fun, and they worked together as a team!

They did average this year, but all the girls

had fun. They are a really great team that

has a great bond with each other. The

girls all tried their best, but they hope

they will do better next year! Also,

congratulations to Alexis Piccone, Kathryn

Yuknek, and Allissa Lavin for making the

all star team! Overall, they had a great

season, and can not wait for it next year!

Field Hockey Banquet By: Catherine McDonald

Every year the St. Bernadette CYO field hockey team has a banquet celebrating their season. This year on November 20 in O’Brien Hall everybody enjoyed a variety of food and cake for dessert. All the players were awarded with a certificate for what they had achieved during the season. Also every player received a ‘Bernies’ headband. After the awards the varsity players read speeches to the coach, for her last year. Finally, the night ended with a slideshow of pictures of the team. Everybody had a really great time!

Varsity Football with the Turkey Bowl Trophy

On a beautiful Thanksgiving morning, St. Bernadette football

won 2 out of 3 games over St. Dots. Flag Football started it off

with a 14-6 victory. The varsity followed it up with a thrilling

14-8 victory. JV put up a good fight, but fell short in a 28-6 loss.

The Turkey Bowl was an exciting day that was very well

attended. Congratulations to all teams!

Flag Football Team Had a Stellar Season Story and Photo by Hailey Horan

The flag football team finished the season off in the most satisfying way- a win against archrival St. Dot’s!

Bernie’s beat them 13-6 on Thanksgiving Day in the Turkey Bowl. It was an all-around great effort on both

sides of the ball.

After beginning the season with back-to-back one touchdown losses, they went on to win 7 of the next 9

games. The other two games ended with one as a tie, and the other was a loss in the last play of the game.

Their overall record is 7-3-1.

The offense is led by the running attack of tailback, Jake

Horan. He leads the team with 23 touchdowns. Liam

Blaney has played solid all season at both quarterback

and defensive end, where he has proven to be a true

leader. Thomas Stromberg, Max McGovern, and

Matthew Niznan have been a steady force on both

sides of the line. Clearing the way for most touchdowns

is the job of Matthew Quintus, along with his stellar

play at linebacker. Perhaps the highlight of the season has been the outstanding duo of Jessica Horan and

Lucia DelGiorno. They set the standard for snatching opposing team’s flags. “It’s been my pleasure to

coach this wonderful group of young kids. They worked hard all season, improved every week, and

developed into one darn good team,” said Coach Bill Horan. “Let me tell ‘ya something, these kids got the

right stuff baby. The future looks bright!” added Coach Ed Quintus.

Congratulations to all of the players for a great season. The other key members of team that will be

returning next year to try to continue their winning ways are: Luke McGovern, Jack Benner, Owen Bonner,

Michael Murphy, Luke Sheridan, Dean Teti, Aidan McGillian, Jack Coyne, and Declan Stromberg. Good luck

next year!
