Commodore’s Report
Ready, set, sail!
Here we are, Season 2018/19 has
come and again the club is ready to
embark on a busy sailing season both
on and off the water.
First and foremost, I would like to
thank all the members for coming
down last weekend and preparing the
club for the season ahead. It’s always
great to see the passion all our mem-
bers show for this little family club,
steeped in tradition and punching well
above its weight.
Your Committee has changed for the
season ahead with a new flag officer
joining our ranks. I would like to intro-
duce Ian James. Ian has been an active
sabre sailor at the club for many sea-
sons and has taken a step forward in
joining the committee as rear Commo-
dore. It’s great to now have a full com-
plement of flag officers ready to steer
the club in years to come.
Throughout the season we will be em-
barking on many projects to update
the club facilities and prepare the club
for the I14 World Championships in
2020 and years beyond. These projects
include landscaping and completing
the building works, upgrading the male
and female amenities, storage com-
pound for more boats, improvements
to the undercroft boat storage and
general maintenance. Lots to do but
improvements we all can enjoy for
many years to come. The first of these
projects is the installation of a storage
compound so our members can leave
their boats on site, in a secured envi-
ronment. All plans are in place with the
committee just waiting on a permit
approval to come through before we
push the “Go” button. In the interim,
the temporary storage compound will
be reinstated at the front of the club
just after Opening Day to ensure all
boats have a safe home.
As you will all notice the builders have
vacated the upper carpark and we
have access to more carpark for this
season. Unfortunately, this will only be
short lived with the plans for Forrest
Hall Stage 2. This new building will be
built on the remainder of the carpark
as you see it with construction to com-
mence in April 2019. The club has
again been in talks and consultation
with UWA to ensure our club and
members are able to benefit from
Andrew Wilson
these works. Once more details
come to hand I will keep you all in-
formed. We have a meeting planned
with UWA and our neighbors this
week with plans to be confirmed. So
stay tuned…
Your committee is looking forward
to the coming season and all the
activities planned. Our first social
night is a bond themed casino night
at the end of November and by
sheer chance it just so happens to
coincide with “someone’s” 40th
birthday. This will be a great night
for all so hope to see you all there.
I would like to wish all our members
a successful start to the season
ahead and I look forward to seeing
you all at the club over the coming
weeks.

International 14 Most of the International 14 fleet hi-bernated over winter with just BD and Footy venturing to MBSC Opening Day to win another bottle of wine for the mantlepiece.
Whilst most the fleet rested, three of our finest found their way to the I14 World Championships hosted by Rich-mond Yacht Club on the windswept San Francisco Bay.
Commodore Wilson, Rear Commodore Stuart Sloss, GE, Courtney and Elliot Mahar made their way to the Golden City to battle the local conditions and enjoy the Californian hospitality.
Some great results were achieved with results posed at:
i14worlds2018.com
We look forward to hearing of their many adventures upon their return.
On the home-front, things are looking great for the season ahead with a good fleet expected to hit the start line each week.
Planning for the 2020 Worlds is well underway with river space and social venues already booked.
The international fleet have shown great interest in the event and a good number are expected to make the jour-ney for what is for many a “bucket list” sailing adventure not to be missed.
See you all on the water! Senor Frog

A Guide to Good Crewing (continued) On Race Day
Make sure you turn up late,
without a good excuse and pref-
erably hungover.
If the boat is not already rigged,
make a note of the time and get
there later next time.
If you have to help rigging up,
then a similar attitude to boat
maintenance is best—stuff it up.
Under no circumstances do any-
thing properly and don’t admit
to knowing how to fix anything.
As soon as the boat is rigged,
disappear to the bar taking as
many crews with you as possi-
ble.
Stay in the bar as long as you can
without actually missing the
start. The idea is to avoid any
pre-start training the skipper
may have in mind.

Javelin Well here we are, at the dawn of new
season. I hope we are all ready for the
new challenges, new threats on the
water and renewing acquaintances
with the Club, fellow members, adver-
saries, friends and anyone else you
choose to mingle with.
Some amongst us have already wet
themselves on the river.
For the record, all positions for the As-
sociation have been filled again by the
previous incumbents for the season.
So we can expect a steady hand (ship!)
once again. Check out the Sailing Pro-
gram for the details, contact numbers
and details for our meetings, etc. A big
thank you to all for nominating and
being returned.
Looking to the 48th Australian Champi-
onships for the Javelins, these will be
held at the Gippsland Lakes Sailing
Club in Victoria from 28th December to
3rd January. The NOR and entry form
have already been circulated and this
will be discussed further in the near
future. Our Association has committed
to provide substantial financial assis-
tance to parties attending the regatta
in an endeavour to keep the faith and
ensure the continuation of the Javelin
rivalry with our friends in the east.
See the emails from the Club for re-
minders that Club fees are now due
and need to be paid. The easiest and
quickest way is to process renewal by
going online from the Club’s website.
Speaking of fees, we will be chasing
you shortly for Association fees and
completion of the entry forms for the
State Championships which commence
in a few weeks after the season open-
ing. The Sailing Instructions are near-
ing completion and will shortly be cir-
culated.
See you on or near the water.

NATIONAL JAVELIN NEWS
November 1984 Edition
At the Dinghy Club, most people have spent the winter preparing their boats.
The sailmakers in WA have been busy with Ron Cohen, Buster Hall and Andrew Fatin all paying visits to various establishments.
Even Graeme Everett (Mac-si-mum) has started on his boat. Someone suggested they saw him a week ago with a bit of sandpaper in his hand; we all know Graeme doesn’t rush into these things, but he will get there eventually.
After selling Christie-Lee, Mau-rice Raphael and Chris Woods have built a 14 footer. Maurice tells me his greatest concern is how to overcome the deafness that will undoubtedly follow from listening to Woodsy for an hour and a half every afternoon with Woodsy’s mouth only a few inches from his ear.
Just a friendly hint to the visitors. The old timers in WA are signing up heavy crews. It looks as though it could be a heavy sea-son this year.

Cherub
Haydon , who will be replacing the pregnant Steve Fryer this season and sailing with Todd, managed to escape the winter all together by running off to work in America as a councillor at a kids summer camp before heading to the North West of France to compete with Andrew Briggs in the Uni World Games hosted by Yacht Club de Cher-bourg, where they finished in 6th place.
Brendon has been busy coaching the CCGS Teams Racing Team who made it to the Nationals after coming 2nd place in the Schools States. And since competing in the Viper World Cham-pionships at SOPYC, I (Jac) have been spending my weekends coaching at CYC and being taught by Brad Devine how to foil.
Jacques and Virginia also fled Perth
Since the last edition of Spraytalk, the PDSC Cherub Fleet have been keeping up their fitness by attending Brads weekly Boot Camp, however the boats have all had some time off the water while their sailors either travelled the world or instead stayed at home re-pairing any major damage from last season (Todd) and getting them ready for the upcoming State and National Championships occurring over Decem-ber and January.
After the shocking luck that Teesh and Todd had over the summer—with Teesh snapping her rig and Todd being taken out by a Sabre as well as by Pan-damodium , the two enjoyed a Tour de Bunnings and an exciting winter of boat work and paint fumes, getting the two boats converted and up to scratch in time for the PDSC Opening Day.
for the winter for work, heading to Sydney and Europe before driving the 4700km from Sydney to Melbourne to Adelaide then finally home. The two also attended a farewell dinner and a rebuild project launch at Lane Cove Sailing Club after an overnight fire in the boat shed destroyed 8 cherubs along with a handful of other classes.
Brad and Briggs have now sold their well known Cherub, Pandamodium, to one of the NSW sailors who's boat was burnt in the fire, but don’t wor-ry—we will still see the two out on the water competing at PDSC, as after Vir-ginia turned down a generous offer of Brad and Briggs filling in for them at a wedding during the states, it was de-cided the two would sail Serenity Now for that day as long as they stay away from Todd on the start line.

Cherub (continued)
Briggs is also taking on the challenge of sail-ing and I14 with Emilia Horn for the seasons to come—Good Luck.
This years State Championships will be held over one weekend (8/9 December) , 3 weeks before the Nationals which are being held at Largs Bay Sailing Club in Adelaide from the 27th December until the 4th January. So far Virginia and Jacques, Jac and Teesh, Hayden and Todd and Will and Leo are the sailors planning to go, and we are all very keen to continue the great Cherub tradition of spend-ing a week getting messy every night and getting thrown around the ocean every after-noon.

Sabre
has not replaced that terribly heavy back breaking dolly.
Ray Martin has sold his boat so we are flat out trying to get him another so we can get him on the water. He is now retired so has plenty of time on his hands but is not a fast decision maker .If you know of a good glass boat up to $8,000 he is a buyer.
As previously mentioned Clayton and Ian have jumped ship for the Heron nationals and we expect them to keep the good name of the Sabres up the front all the best to them.
Good Sailing for season 2018/19.
Bill Gillham
Bruce Brodie unfortunately wont be sailing this season. His Knee problems are still on going which is bad luck as he is keen as mustard to get back out there we wish him well and hope for a speedy return.
Heidi Miller has a new YMS sabre from Melbourne which is really going to jump her up the front well done we are looking forward to seeing it all the best.
Russel Stranger has done a magnificent paint job on his boat with a new colour change it looks faster watch out.
Narelle Thomas likewise has done a beautiful paint job on her boat but still

29ers The 29er season has started again with a few of our members attending West Sail and the 2018 State Youth Champi-onships held at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. It was a different West Sail this year compared to previous years where it was held at TCYC Rockingham. We all agree that we had many years of fun at that camp … there was this one memory where the coaches were in the coaches debrief and a bunch of the Open Bic kids (now 29er sailors) including myself snuck outside at night and went to BIG T’s car and tied an unlucky camper to the top of his roof racks!! many great memories…
Out of the 3 PDSC boats that attended the Youth’s Jonathon Everett and Sam Rose finished ranked the highest com-ing in at 4th position, well done boys! With some of these boats heading to
Tasmania for the 29er Nationals, the training and experience of West Sail and Youth Championships was benefi-cial.
Ahead of the new season we invite all 29er sailors and their families to take the time to respond to the club’s sur-vey regarding training. Your feedback is important to us. Look out for the link on your emails and Facebook.
Looking forward to a great season ahead.

O’Pen Bic Three of our Open Bic members were selected to attend the annual Westsail training camp at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club over the first week of school holidays. With coaching provided by WAIS instructors Jenna Everett, Aiden Grove and Kaison Puls continued to de-velop their skills leading into the Youth championships on completion of the four day camp. The two day Youth championships was a tight battle at the front with Jenna coming out on top in a talented fleet of sailors to win the cham-pionship. Kaison also had a great week being awarded the most improved sailor and at only 7 years of age has a promis-ing future.
Following the Youth championships Roy-al Fresh Water Bay Yacht Club held a three day development camp for gold, silver and bronze Bic sailors. Eight PDSC sailors attended the camp which fo-
cused on techniques and boat set up which they all got great experience leading into the season.
Mounts Bays opening day was anoth-er fantastic event with six of our Open Bics attending in a fleet of 18 Bics. The conditions where perfect for Bic sail-ing and great to see a strong silver division racing. Jenna continued her great form dominating the Gold divi-sion from start to finish and Kaison winning the Silver division but more pleasing was to see our entire silver division get around the course.
The PDSC Bic sailors are about to have a fantastic season with great talent in both Gold and Silver divisions, can't wait to get racing underway.
See you all at training soon.

Summary of Winter Results
A quiet winter for most of the PDSC O’Pen BIC fleet with 2 winter series being conducted; 2018 FSC Huck Scott Winter Series -
Fremantle Sailing Club and 2018 Dinghy Winter Series - Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. Strong fleets from MBSC and RFBYC in
both regattas and only one PDSC sailor Aiden Grove, achieving 2nd place in the Fremantle regatta and 7th at Freshwater after
missing a few races. Winds were variable either too strong or absent and many races were abandoned during the series’.
The season kicked off with WestSail training between 22-25 September at RFBYC for those lucky enough to be invited. The for-
mat did not include a camp this year much to the disappointment of the parents, sorry kids. WestSail was immediately followed
by the 2018 WA State Youth Championships also at FYBYC with a bigger contingent of PDSC sailors. Jenna Everett won the event
on countback from Zachary Sprunt, with Aiden 9th and Kaisn Pulus a respectable 16th.
Hibernation has finished with a full calendar of club races and regattas

Signet Like most migratory birds, SigneTs fly north for the summer to avoid the cold, wet winter weather (and those misera-ble household chores that have accu-mulated over the sailing season).
This year’s “most travelled” award must go to Rob and Jenny Warner, who trav-elled to Europe twice during the off-season. Through May and June they were winding their way along the back roads of Italy and more recently they returned for a cruise through the French canals.
It is always instructive to see how other people travel. Perhaps trying to mask their limited Japanese language skills, Peter and Marg Harffey tried to blend in when travelling to Japan by dressing like the locals…when in Rome.
Spraytalk June/July 1984
Picnic at Ledge Point
The number of Siggies and friends that turned up to the Kunzli’s shack was fantastic, considering that it was rain-ing like #$%! And blowing like $#*!
It was a great day with eve-rybody sitting inside eating and drinking. Some, howev-er, ventured into the fresh air and this is where the re-ports became somewhat dis-torted.
Some say that Rob Warner went skinny dipping, others that he jumped fully clothed into the surf to rescue his kids football.
What apparently happened was that Brian Wales who is used to a round ball and is left footed as well, got hold of the kids footy and set it sailing aided by an offshore gale. Rob, very bravely took off socks and shoes but the ball soon disappeared rapid-ly in a westerly direction aid-ed by the offshore breeze. Soon he was seen swimming out to sea in his bare essen-tials.
The happy ending was that he did come back with the ball.
Bert Pielage
I also hear that Peter and Marg are the proud owners of a new caravan so I am sure we’ll be seeing them showing off their Japanese costumes in Broome next year.
For the record, Kay and I also travelled north this year, visiting Virginia in Italy where she spent the first half of the year working and studying. Driving a naturally aspirated Fiat Panda over the Alps made the SigneT feel fast.
I’ve heard rumours that there will be at least two new sets of sails being un-furled for the first time on Opening Day. Step Aside and The Menace are hoping for fewer tears and more pen-nants this season, so watch out for some colourful new kites.

Mudlark Sept/Oct School Sailing Course
After the mammoth effort last off sea-
son to refurbish the mudlark fleet, the
club was able to offer courses for Start
Sailing 1 as per the Australian Sailing
syllabus, using the PDSC’s Discover Sail
Centre status. These were offered to
club members and general public.
As always there was a dedicated group
of volunteers working behind the
scenes to help get everything ready to
go. Thanks to Chelsea, Scott and Ben
for all their hard work with promotion,
and enrolments and Jan for being at
the club supporting the coaches and
ensuring things went smoothly. The
instructors for the courses started their
sailing journeys at PDSC in the Mudlark
class, which seems very fitting.
A course was run in both weeks of the
recent holidays. The first week’s course
was held with beautiful warm days
light steady breezes just right for
learning to sail. The participants
learnt the basics quickly and were
extremely keen to spend every mi-
nute on the water.
The following week was a different
story … the weather was very cold
and wet with a strong easterly blow-
ing most of the first day. The river
had white caps rolling into the club
beach. The intrepid young sailors
completed lots of on shore drills, the-
ory sessions including tying notes
until the wind subsided enough for
them to get on the water. The second
day was much
better weather and
all the sailors en-
joyed putting what
they had learnt on shore the previous
day into practice on the water.
The courses were well received and
enjoyed by all participants, many of
which expressed an interest in contin-
uing learning to sail at the club during
the season.
It is anticipated that these courses will
run during future holidays with the
continued support of the club man-
agement and our volunteers.

Mudlark Mudlark sailors at Opening Day
Mudlark sailors are welcome to come down on the day and join in on the fun. Note formal classes will NOT com-mence until the week after, however kids and parents - especially those vis-iting the club for the first time, at an Open Day, are welcome to attend, mainly from lunchtime onwards. Mud-lark Class Rep's and old salts would love to chat with you. Perhaps a great day to dust off the mudlark and check things out in the morning.
Mudlark States 6 & 7th April 2019
Don't forget PDSC is hosting the Mud-lark States this coming season. Once again we will invite all the kids to come and enjoy the weekend of sailing.
See you at the Club.

With our Club membership fees now
due and being paid, it is a good time
to raise an item that appears on the
suite of charges that are billable
when paying your fees. One item is
a donation to The Ron Tough
Yachting Foundation.
The Foundation was established in
1980, with Syd Corser as the inaugu-
ral chairman. Its mission is to en-
courage excellence in sailing in
Western Australia, with an emphasis
on emerging talented youth. The
Foundation is unique across the oth-
er Australian states and territories.
The Foundation is pleased to have
supported many promising young
sailors from most Western Australi-
an yacht clubs. Many of them have
gone on to considerable success in
the competitive yachting world, in-
cluding Olympic campaigns and
World Championships. Notable re-
cipients have been Belinda Stowell,
who won a Gold medal in the 470s
at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and
Colin Harrison who similarly won
Gold in the Para Olympics at Rio in
2016. Funding this level of yachting
is expensive and difficult. The Foun-
dation has also been able to support
a number of yacht clubs and class
associations in their endeavours to
grow the sailing talent pool within
Western Australia.
Each year, applications for financial
grants are sought from supporting
clubs, class associations and individ-
uals, with the Directors of the Foun-
dation determining the awards
which are presented annually in
conjunction with the WA Sailing
Awards.
A number of junior and intermedi-
ate members from PDSC have re-
ceived grants to support various
Championship series in their en-
deavour to compete at the higher
levels including international events.
For PDSC over the past 5 years, the
Foundation has donated $4,000 to
the club mainly to purchase on-
water equipment such as junior life
jackets and other training aides.
Admittedly club members, mainly
full sailing members, as part of their
normal club fees, have donated
funds (currently $5.00pa) over many
years. Donations over the last 5
years of around $3,000 have been
made and PDSC is and has been a reg-
ular donor. Following the 2018-19
season the Foundation will achieve a
milestone of having donated a total of
over $1 Million since the 1980s.
In the past 12 months the Foundation
has undergone a major revamp includ-
ing establishing a Board of Directors
(formally trustees) who are responsi-
ble for the day to day management of
collecting and investing the capital
funds of the Foundation. Currently I
am a member of the Board and nomi-
nated Secretary to the Foundation.
The refreshing of the Foundation in-
cludes a dedicated website to market
the work of the Foundation over the
past few months.

dation?; follow the link at :

On the cusp of the opening of our
2018 - 2019 season, a few photos of
earlier Openings may be of some
interest.
The first two photographs are of
Opening Day 1985 - 1986 season and
two rather dashing members, Fred
Everett and Tom Burt! The inscrip-
tion on the back of this photo refers
to them as a “Couple of old war
horses”. That was more than 30
years ago, and they were referred to
as being old then!!
The second two photographs are
also of Opening Days. The larger
photo of members watching the pro-
ceedings is unfortunately not dated.
The photo of yachts leaving the
shore is Opening Day 1965 – 66 sea-
son. It’s interesting to note the
different sail profile, wooden hulls
and spars of the 14 footers com-
pared to the carbon rigs and fibre-
glass hulls of the current day I14’s.

Well another season is about to get
underway and I am busy printing,
laminating & organising the mem-
bership packs. The off season has
been busy with admin, as we moved
to a new Australian Sailing member-
ship management system and web-
site
For those that have already renewed
their membership, thank you and I
hope you found the process much
easier, feedback so far has been pos-
itive. For those that haven’t I en-
courage you to hop online and com-
plete your renewal. Should you wish
to not pay your fees online, please
still go online and complete the

The new website is revamped and
full of plenty of information. If you
haven’t been on our website lately,
please have a look. If anyone has any
news items or boats for sale, please
send them through.
I look forward to seeing you all at the
start of the season collecting your

What Makes PDSC so unique
Our club is one of the only yacht
clubs in Perth that is operated pure-
ly by volunteers.
Every aspect of the club from the
start crew, rescue boat drivers,
coaches, office staff and those run-
ning the canteen and the bar do so
on a volunteer basis.
PDSC also has the reputation as one
of the most family orientated,
friendly and welcoming yacht clubs
in Perth and yet capable of produc-
ing world-class sailors.
There are many benefits to being a
member of PDSC, which are out-
lined in our membership booklet.
We encourage all members to help
out with any aspect of PDSC and
continue to uphold our reputation
as one of the best yacht clubs in
Western Australia.

The heart of our club are our volunteers.
PDSC is completely volunteer operated.
Without our volunteers, races would not
be sailed, results would not be recorded,
the club would not be cleaned or main-
tained, food and drinks would not be able
to be purchased, no administration would
be done or regatta management carried
out.
Please do not hesitate to come forward if
you would like to lend a hand and help to

With the season fast approaching it
is time to have a look at what's hap-
pening this season in the canteen.
This year we have made a change to
the way the shop is rostered. We
will still have our normal shifts.
Where we require 3 volunteers per
shift..
1. 9am—11.30am
2. 11.30am—2pm
3. 2pm—5pm
And once a month we will have a
Crash The Canteen day, where we
will allocate the whole day to a
class. This is a day where each class
will provision, prepare and sell any-
thing of their choosing. Maybe a
hamburger day, or on a cold day
some pasta for lunch. Each class will
be expected to fill the roster for the
day.
The dates for each class are:
1. 3rd November I14
2. 24th November Signets/
Heron
3. 2nd February Javelins
4. 23rd February Bics/Mudlarks
5. 9th March Sabres
6. 6th April Cherubs/29ers
Talking Shop Sounds Great Sign Me Up!
The rosters for the season will be
placed on the notice board outside
of the canteen. You can come and
put your name down for a shift or
two that suits you. Initially, the
roster will remain on the notice
board for a two week period after
which, rosters will be allocated to
family names. Family members are
then responsible to fill their allocat-
ed roster or swap with another
member.
