Noalee McDonald-Augustine is an Educational Consultant that specializes in Student Enhancement Services. She is nationally trained in CHARACTER COUNTS! and the Prudential Youth Leadership Institute, is a Bullying Prevention trainer, and coordinates the Smoky Hill Low and High Ropes Adventure Program. Noalee has a BA in Mathematics, a BA in Sociology

and her master degree work is in Physical Education.

Meet Our Staff

Allen Bachelor is an Emergency Response Consultant and works with volume purchasing for Smoky Hill ESC. Allen is a retired career officer with the Kansas Highway Patrol and provides crisis management training for our service member schools. He also provides training and certification for Rule 10

coaches and is a Defensive Driving instructor for school bus drivers.

Denise Brown has served the last several years as our sub-group specialist. In the past two years, Denise has served as the instructional coach/coordinator for Marion County Special Edu-cation Cooperative, working directly in classrooms with teachers and students of all ages. This has given her a fresh helping of practical experience you and your students will benefit from!

Judy Brummer is an educational consultant and previously taught high school math and has worked as a Parent Education Coordinator. Judy took part in the Career and Technical Educa-tion workshop sponsored by the Kansas Department of Educa-tion linking math with Career and Technical Education and will

provide support in this area.

Marty Christie is the Staff Development Coordinator for Smoky Hill ESC. Before coming to the service center, she had been a classroom teacher for over 20 years. Marty coordinates SHESC Staff Development and presents on various topics related to School Improvement; such as PDC’s, Six Trait Writing, and Student Improvement Team Training.

Jaye Ditter is an Educational Consultant for the Smoky Hill Education Service Center. With six years of experience working with educators and providing instruction. Jaye's trainings are hands on and focus on enhancing teacher instruction and student learning. Examining everyday classroom issues during trainings, Jaye's workshops look to enhance both student and

staff achievement!

Rachel Loersch recently retired from the Salina School District

after thirty-five years where she was a 5th and 6th grade teacher.

Rachel loves math and science and has provided professional

development in the past on cooperative learning.

Deb Kohn is an Educational Consultant and a graduate of

FHSU with a degree in secondary education. She began her

professional career as a county extension agent for KSU, and

served as the Director of Student Support Services at Colby

Community College. In 1999 she returned to her goal of

teaching and taught Language Arts at Oakley High School until joining the

SHESC staff.

Linda Loder is Coordinator of Integrated Technology at SHESC. Linda holds a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from Fort Hays State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Bethany College. Her background includes ten years of secondary teaching experience, two years as a district technology facilitator and three years as an educational

technology consultant at the Kansas Dept. of Education.

Pam Gaschler is an Educational Consultant for SHESC. She has a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University in Ele-mentary Education and a master’s degree from FHSU in Educa-tion. She is a certified trainer for Power School, Curriculum Map-per and a Master Teacher for Intel Teach to the Future!!

Chris Moddelmog is the Director of Technology Services. He graduated from Bethany College in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in education and earned a Master’s Degree in educational administration from Wichita State University. He has been involved in education for 12 years in teaching, professional

development, and administrative roles. Chris is a certified Power School Trainer.

Judy Nold is an Educational Consultant who came to us from Oklahoma with 17 years of teaching experience. Judy also served as a technology facilitator in her district. She presents workshops on various subjects and looks forward to providing teachers with training that will support curricular and instructional decision-

making.

Larry Smull is the Custodial Services Coordinator for SHESC. He graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Larry worked for USD #305, at the Salina Tech School for 35 years. His expertise is in custodial training, evaluation of workloads, and inspections

of custodial cleaning procedures, which he did for school systems in Kansas.

Larry Patrick is the Associate Director at Smoky Hill ESC and is beginning his 15th year. He has 16 years of science teaching experience in public schools and has taught science and education courses at the college level. While at the service center, Larry’s primary responsibilities have been in curriculum/instruction/assessment, school improvement, alternative

education, career & technical education, and information/instructional technology. Larry is a certified Power School and Achieve 3000 Trainer.

Joe Ryan is a Career and Technical Education Consultant for Smoky Hill ESC. Joe previously had been involved full time in production agriculture. Along with working with the Carl Perkins, Tech Prep and Non Traditional Initiatives grants, Joe does envi-ronmental consulting with asbestos and mold management and is a member of the Smoky Hill Crisis Management team.

Darla Smith is the Assistant Director at the Smoky Hill ESC. She has over 20 years of experience in education as a classroom teacher, staff development specialist, school improvement/assessment specialist and curriculum coordinator. Darla is pas-sionate about improving student learning and brings a wealth of knowledge to the task. She is also a certified NWEA/MAP

Trainer.

7 Making Learning Stick - Ways to Engage Students & Retain Learning, Hays

Frustrated after a lesson when students don’t seem to remember main points? With simple modifications, revise your lessons to improve your students’ learning: learn strategies to “hook” stu-dents and “glue” their learning; learn how strategies are supported by Marzano, Danielson, Wolfe, and Tate; and plan a lesson using templates to help insure successful learning.

9 Inquiring Minds - Hands-on Science, Grades 4-8, SHLC

Teachers will have the opportunity to participate in various ex-periments that meet benchmarks for Science in grades 4-8. Before leaving, you will have several experiments that are easy to do, inexpensive and ready to implement in your classroom curriculum.

12 Overview of Six Trait Writing 5th - 12th Grades, Hays

This workshop is designed for Language Arts teachers who wish to become familiar with Six Trait Writing. Opportunities will be pro-vided to review tested writing indicators, examine the new writing prompt format, and score sample student essays using the new state scoring rubrics. Tips for calibrating to improve scoring con-sistency will be shared, as well as any writing assessment updates from KSDE. Presented by: Deb Kohn

9 Annual PDC Training, SHESC, 9:00-12:00

The new Inservice Regulations require an annual training for Pro-fessional Development Councils. This session will fulfill that re-quirement. Each district should have at least one PDC member and any new members attend the annual update. Topics include: Inservice Regulations, how PDC’s interact with the new Kansas Licensure System, the Weighted Point System, Criteria for Quality Staff Development and other topics related to PDC’s. Time will be allotted for participants to ask questions.

15 SIT—Just Problem Solving, Hays

This training is for schools that have the Student Improvement Team process in place. If you are a new SIT member or it’s been a few years since you attended a SIT training, this workshop is for you! This is a one-day focus on the problem solving process. Re-ceive the current materials and take time to critique your team’s application of the SIT process. Participants do not need to attend with a team; individual participants are welcome.

We all know the statistics on boys and their lack of achievement compared to girls. How much can be attributed to physiological differences and how we “play the game of school”? In this work-shop, you will discover the physiological differences between the brains of girls and boys; learn how verbal skills affect academic performance in boys; discover the “why’s” behind male behavior in school; and gain strategies for building a boy-friendly classroom without shortchanging the girls!

The ability to articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through speaking and writing is a core skill that prepares students for an increasingly complex life and work environments in the 21st century. Designed for 6th - 12th grade teachers in all curriculum areas, we will look at text structures, note-taking strategies and content summarization strategies and how these contribute to the writing to learn classroom. 27 DIBELS & What to Do with the Data, SHLC

You’ve heard the word, now come learn how to use the tool with your students! This two-day workshop (2nd day March 10) is one of the quickest and easiest ways to target students who are in need of assistance, as well as monitor their progress, and begin to pinpoint changes needed in instruction. You will leave with an understanding of the Big 5 in reading; the DIBELS subtests; tools for breaking the students into groups; and strategies for building on students’ current levels of performance.

When a student makes a structure connection with text, he or she unlocks difficult reading materials and attaches the infor-mation to a framework. Middle and high school language arts teachers will identify text structures for each of the text types and explore strategies and activities to use with text structure to in-crease comprehension in this workshop.

We know, however, that the majority of bullying is perpetrated by males, stranger violence is still a “boy thing”, and 82% of the most violent crimes are committed by males. In this workshop you will gain awareness and make sense of bully behaviors; characteristics about the bullies, victims, and bystanders; and how to redirect and change bullying behavior.

How to search our Library online

1. Log onto www.smokyhill.org. Click on “Our Library.” 2. If you have a patron barcode and password go on to step 3. If you do

not, click on “1st Time User Registration” and email the requested infor-mation.

3. Click on “Search Library.” 4. Click “Log In” and enter your patron barcode and password. 5. Type in a word, title or author in the “Search For” box and click “All Words.”

6. If you see an item you are interested in, click on the title. 7. If the item is available that you want or it is out and you would like to re-

ceive it when it is returned, click on “Place Hold.” 8. If you would like the item for a specific date in the future, click on “Place Reservation” and enter the start date and end date. The normal check-out period is four weeks. New items are only available for two weeks.

9. Your order is placed! Your order should arrive via the SHESC delivery van to your school’s office. *
