4. An Island Sancutary. A House in Greece John Stefanidis

£32.50 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 208 / 200 colour photo-

graphs / 28x24cm

John Stefanidis has created the quintessential island house in Patmos, Greece. Distinguished by its bold Mediterra-nean colors, natural materials, and crisp, clean lines, the house is spaced-out with sun-drenched rooms, built from materials such as tile, stone, and stucco. One of the hall-marks of the house is its emphasis on indoor/outdoor living: spaces such as the „garden rooms‟ are outside, yet are thought of as parts of the house.

In this book, Stefanidis explains how the house has evolved over many years. Reflecting the designer‟s love for the island, the Patmos house displays his original use of vibrant color, his eclectic and cosmopolitan aesthetic, and a desire to combine comfort with style. With two hundred photographs, An Island Sanctuary demonstrates how the picturesque scenery of an island retreat and its rich history and culture can provide inspiration for pre-sent-day living.

Now he introduces readers to a range of those styles—from casual to formal, vintage to urban—with stunning photography and charming design stories. O'Brien carefully describes the design process involved in each of his chosen projects, including a downtown loft, a traditional estate, and a converted schoolhouse. 23. Arts and Crafts Master. The Houses and Gardens of M. H. Baillie Scott Ian Macdonald-Smith

£35 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp.224 / 200 colour illustrations / 25.5x23cm

As a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, Baillie Scott adhered to the philosophy that good design should be made available to everyone. He maintained a characteristically English dedication to the domestic landscape, designing houses and gardens whose exterior forms and interior details were rooted in a romantic vision of vernacular construction and craftsmanship. But his spatial planning signaled a revolution in the organization of interior space, with the development of the open plan around the same time that Frank Lloyd Wright was engaging in similar experiments across the Atlantic. Photographer Ian Macdonald-Smith has captured thirty of the most characteristically innovative and charming extant houses designed by Baillie Scott, as well as their delightful gardens, in photographs that express the vibrant craftsmanship and prescient planning of this early-twentieth-century master.

Philippe Chancel‟s beautiful photographs offer another unique view of this jewel of theatres, and of its exceptional renovation.

30. American Glamour and the Evolution of Modern Architecture Alice T. Freidman

£45 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 272 / Profusely illustrated throughout / 29x23cm

The sleek lines and gleaming facades of the architecture of the late 1940s and 1950s reflect a culture fascinated by the promise of the Jet Age. Buildings like Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal at JFK Airport and Philip Johnson's Four Seasons Restaurant retain a thrilling allure, seeming to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. In this ground-breaking work, Alice Friedman draws on a vast range of sources to argue that the aesthetics of mid-century modern architecture reflect an increasing fascination with 'glamour'. Featuring examples ranging from Mies van der Rohe's Seagram Building to Elvis Presley's Graceland estate, as well as vintage photographs, advertisements and posters, Friedman argues that American and European architecture and design increasingly reflected the values of a burgeoning consumer society, including a confidence in the power of objects to transform the identity of those who owned them.

31. Katsura. Picturing Modernism in Traditional Architecture Yasufumi Nakamori

£35 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp.224 / 100 black-&-white illustrations and 15 colour images / 31x28cm

Originally published by Yale in 1960, Katsura: Tradition and Creation of Japanese Architecture is the most significant pho-tographic publication about the relationship of modernity and tradition in postwar Japan. Designed by famed Bau-haus graphic artist Herbert Bayer, Katsura comprises 135 black-and-white photographs by Ishimoto Yasuhiro de-picting the 17th-century Katsura Imperial Villa in Kyoto, with essays by architects Walter Gropius and Tange Kenzo. This new publication argues that Tange, moti-vated by a desire to transform the architectural images into abstract fragments, played a major role in cropping and sequencing Ishimoto's photographs for the book. The author provides a fresh and critical look at the nature of the collaboration between Tange and Ishimoto, explor-ing how their words and images helped establish a new direction in modern Japanese architecture.

37. Les Lalanne Olivier Gabet £35 / pp. 144 / Hardback / 200 illustrations / 21x29cm François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne, a French husband-and-wife team of sculptors, have worked side by side for more than half a century. This catalogue accompanies a

major retrospective of their work at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, their first Parisian exhibition since the 1970s. Two individual artists regarded as a single entity by the public, the Lalannes are primarily known for having made nature and animals the vehicle of many of their creations. Unclassifiable as sculptors or designers, they have always exhibited together, with the joint idea of giving sculpture a specific use. Their often hybrid works puzzle, amuse and delight: creating a kind of surrealist poetry that plays with words, forms and materials. This book celebrates their work with both archival and installation photographs, claiming their place at the centre of histories of twentieth-century sculpture and the decorative arts.

38. Guglielmo Ulrich Luca Scacchetti

£70 / Hardback / pp.509 / Profusely illustrated throughout in colour and black-and-white / 29x26cm

He worked from the late 1920s to the 1970s, playing a fundamental role in the formation of an Italian style. Alongside Gio Ponti and other designers he promoted a mid-century idea of modernizing Italian liv-ing. What distinguished his own style was the ability to interpret eighteenth- and nineteenth-century traditions in an elegant, modern and comfortable way.

This catalogue draws on a body of very rich visual mate-rial, including designer's drawings and watercolours from Ulrich‟s Milanese archive. This stunning illustrative con-tent is accompanied by a lively text which places this im-portant designer in relation to the design contexts in which he worked.

55. Shared Space. The Joseph M. Cohen Collection Ray Merritt

£50 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp.336 / 330 illustrations in colour / 32x23cm

The reasons why people collect art are no doubt as simple and as complex as the reasons why people fall in love. The New York collector Joe Cohen has been quietly amassing a stupendous art collection for four decades—excluding no medium or subject—for the love of art, and its acquisition. The Cohen Family Collection is vast, but also very personal, often with a tale behind each work. Among its highlights are paintings by Tiepolo, Degas, Matisse, Picasso, Chagall, Balthus, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Joan Mitchell and David Hockney, and photographs by Atget, Dorothea Lange, Irving Penn, Avedon, Sugimoto and Chuck Close. This massive celebration of the collection illustrates many of the works in situ, and, through informative and entertaining commentary, casts light on their diversity and significance.

Focussing for the first time on the relationship between drawing and painting in Van Gogh's art, this stunning book addresses the principle of drawing as the root of his practice. In a beautifully-illustrated set of arguments, the book‟s authors draw attention to the ways in which Van Gogh drew with his brush on canvas, graphic structures posited as the essential means of expression with which he overcame Impressionism. From the earliest works, through the wheat fields and cottages of his final summer, the reader is invited to follow Van Gogh‟s “fervid hand” as he “merged color and line to form an indissoluble bond within expressive „colored lines.‟” Beautifully pro-duced, the book includes reproductions of 50 paintings and 120 major watercolours and drawings.

58. The Indian Portrait, 1560-1860 Edited by Rosemary Crill and Kapil Jariwala

£25 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 176 / Illustrated throughout in colour / 30x24cm

Between 1560 and 1860, the portrait served in India as an official chronicle or eye-witness account, a means of re-vealing the intimate moments of everyday life, and a tool for propaganda. Yet the proliferation and mastery of In-dian portraiture in the Mughal and Rajput courts brought a new level of artistry and style to the genre. The rise of the 'observed' portrait saw Mughal artists addressing real-ism, which in turn led to the development of the 'empathy' portrait. Here the sitter was depicted as a psy-chological entity for the first time in Indian art. The so-phisticated product of indigenous development and for-eign influence, the beautiful paintings reproduced here are a record of a rich and complex history, embracing influ-ences from Iran to Europe, as well as Hindu and Muslim traditions. The catalogue to an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, this book brings together over sixty works to celebrate the beauty, power and humanity of In-dian portraits.

£34 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 200 / 160 tritone plates, 150 black & white plates / 24x30cm

Jeanloup Sieff was the complete photographer. He was gifted in every arena of the medium: fashion and advertising, nude, reportage, portraits and landscape. Sieff left a rich collection of works created from the 1950s until the turn of the 21st century. He was a prodigiously productive artist and was often overtaken by the speed of the medium and his own success, normally short of the necessary time to delve into his archive. Hence many of the works published in this book have never been seen or previously published. With his characteristic sense of humour and light-hearted approach he wrote: “my pictures are little black and white pebbles that I dropped on my way to adulthood, meant for leading me back to my adolescence.”

This exqui-site monograph was the first to feature works selected from all of the artist‟s series‟ produced to date. Sugi-moto's celebrated portraits of wax figures seem to face up to their living audiences; his seascapes show us nothing less than a person's first conscious view of the ocean; the extremely long exposures of his theaters elevate the white, luminescent cinema screen, trans-forming it into a magical image of an altar; and the fas-cinating dioramas of scientific display cases allow us to travel with the artist far into the past. 71. Guy Bourdin. In Between Shelley Verthime

£34 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 272 / 400 photographs / 29.5x19.4cm

Guy Bourdin‟s vivid, narrative-infused work placed him at the vanguard of fashion photography for a career that spanned four decades. From his first provocative feature in 1955, capturing haute couture alongside butchered cow heads, Guy Bourdin pushed the limits of fashion photog-raphy. In Between delves into that career, charting the course of his artistic development from the 1950s into the 1980s with over 200 exceptional images. This monograph reassembles many of the original editorial layouts as they were published in magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, offering a new and illuminating critical context in the process. Guy Bourdin tailored his compositions to the constraints of the printed page both conceptually and graphically, and the mirror motif so central in his work finds its formal counterpart in the doubleness of the magazine spread. Layout and design become powerful metaphors for the photographic medium, engaging the eye and with it, the mind.

£35 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 224 / Illustrated throughout in colour / 26x25cm

Quilts evoke the past—they stimulate our earliest memories of security and comfort and resonate with historical and cultural references challenging the assumption that stitching is simply 'women's work'. Using stunning new photography, this book explores the personal and social histories which reveal the maker's complex engagement with the wider world. The myths and narratives handed down with each intricately pieced patchwork and stitched whole cloth are as much a part of our heritage as the silks, velvets and cottons which document our textile history. Primary sources, such as inventories, diaries and letters add context to the personal narratives documented by the quilts, exploring responses to marriage, childbirth, love and loss. The book includes contemporary material to show how artists such as Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin respond to the tradition of quilt making.

105. The Surprising Life of Constance Spry Sue Shepherd

£18.99 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 256 / Black-and-white illustrations / 23x15cm

‘Dress by Schiaperelli, photographs by Cecil Beaton, flowers by Constance Spry—The decorator of the mo-ment, the photographer of the moment, the florist of the moment—what more could you ask?‟ Thus Vogue maga-zine described the wedding in 1937 of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, but today Constance Spry is better known as the author of that bible of middle-class house-wives throughout the land, The Constance Spry Cookery Book. Those of us who recognize the name may think only of recipes, but her story is in fact that of a pro-foundly unconventional woman, who went from a pov-erty stricken childhood to the height of London society, taking in a career as rich and varied as it was unusual for a woman of her era. Connie began her life teaching slum children and ended it creating the floral displays for the coronation Queen Elizabeth II. Along the way, she es-caped a violent marriage, had an affair with a cross-dressing lesbian artist and built a hugely successful busi-ness as a society florist.

104. David Hicks. My Kind of Garden David Hicks

£29.50 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 304 / 328 colour photo-

graphs / 28x24cm David Hicks was one of the great designers of the twenti-eth century. He is primarily known for his interior design, but was also involved with carpets, jewellery, fabrics, fur-niture, wallpaper and gardens. What he seeks to impart in his books is „style‟ and it is very much a style of his own. His clear-cut attitudes are revealed in the new edition of this famous book about garden design. „What I have sought to achieve, all through my working life,‟ he writes „is a liaison between the past and the present day whilst maintaining a practical but somewhat experimental atti-tude to outdated tradition. I have attempted to introduce a lot of today and some of tomorrow whilst always keep-ing appropriateness and the client's requirements fore-most in my mind.‟ My Kind of Garden is superbly illustrated with photographs of gardens David Hicks designed, and gardens from all around the world which appealed to his personal sense of good taste.

107. The Garden at Charleston. A Bloomsbury Garden Through the Seasons Sue Snell

£16.99 / Hardback, dust jacket / pp. 112 / 150 colour

photographs / 27x25cm

Set in the heart of the Sussex downs, Charleston Farmhouse is the most important remaining example of Bloomsbury decorative style. But the garden, described

by Virginia Woolf in 1916 as „charming! Now run rather

wild‟ became and remained central to life in the farmhouse. The walled garden, the pond, the orchard and the fields beyond, all contributed in a major sense to the creative energies of the place. And this creativity is reflected in the numerous works of art placed around the garden to enhance, and sometimes to comment on or to provide a counterpoint to the simple but expressive planting schemes. Now, for the first time, the year-round beauty and glory of this garden has been captured by one of Britain's leading garden photographers. The result is a book that will enchant and entertain.
