Born in 1934 in Toronto, Peter Gzowski covered most of the last half of the 20th century as a journalist and interviewer. This first biography of the man is also a portrait of Canada during those decades, beginning with Gzowski’s days at the University of Toronto’s The Varsity in the mid-1950s, through his years as the youngest-ever managing editor of Maclean’s in the 1960s and his tremendous success on CBC Radio’s Morningside in the 1980s and 1990s, and ending with his stint as a Globe and Mail columnist at the dawn of the 21st century and his death in January 2002.

From the rise of state medicine to the decline of the patriarchy, Gzowski was there to comment, to resist, and to participate. Here was a man who was proud to call himself Canadian and who made millions of other Canadians realize that Canada was, in what he claimed was a Canadian expression, not a bad place to live.

Rae Fleming’s previous biographical investigations include a biography of railway entrepreneur Sir William Mackenzie entitled The Railway King of Canada and an edited collection of essays on biography. He has also written several articles, most of them biographical in one way or another, for The Beaver. Fleming lives in Argyle, Ontario.

Among the important stories that need to be told about noteworthy Canadians, Lincoln Alexander’s sits at the top of the list. Born in Toronto in 1922, Alexander embarked on an exemplary life path that has involved military service for his country, a successful political career, a thriving law practice, and vocal advocacy on subjects ranging from anti-racism to the importance of education.

This biography traces a remarkable series of events from Alexander’s early life to the present that helped shape the charismatic and influential leader whose impact continues to be felt today. From facing down racism to challenging the postwar Ontario establishment, becoming Canada’s first black Member of Parliament, and entertaining royalty as Ontario’s lieutenant-governor, Alexander’s is the ultimate, uplifting Canadian success story, the embodiment of what defines Canada.

Lincoln M. Alexander graduated from McMaster University and Osgoode Hall Law School. Now retired, he was the chancellor of the University of Guelph and has served on the boards of many cultural and charitable organizations. He lives in Hamilton.

Herb Shoveller is a journalism graduate of the University of Western Ontario and worked at the London Free Press for two decades before leaving in 2005 to start a writing, editing, and consulting business. He is the author of The Story of Ryan and Jimmy and lives in Guelph, Ontario.

Josephine Mildred Curl Penny grew up in Labrador during the 1940s and 1950s. Like many Métis, she and her family lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, moving inside to the primitive settlement of Roaches Brook each fall to hunt and trap, and outside to Spotted Islands in the spring to harvest the rich fishing grounds.

Sent away to hospital at age four, to boarding school when she was seven, and forced out to work at age eleven, Josie lost the family bond so important to a young child. She recounts the years spent at Lockwood Boarding School where she suffered atrocious punishments, merciless teasing, and the humiliation of two rapes. The depersonalization and constant punishment eventually took their toll, and her once free-spirited nature was broken. Reading became her only escape.

Set against the beauty and ruggedness of the Labrador coast, So Few on Earth is a story of perseverance in a harsh environment and the possibility of life starting anew from shattered beginnings.

Josie Penny attended writing courses at McMaster University in Hamilton, where she was encouraged to seek out a publisher for her memoir. Josie pushed ahead with the idea, participating in several writing seminars and earning a certificate from the Long Ridge Writers Group in Connecticut. She lives in Dunnville, Ontario.

William C. Van Horne was one of North America’s most accomplished men. Born in Illinois in 1843, Van Horne started working in the railway business at a young age. In 1881 he was lured north to Canada to become general manager of the fledgling Canadian Pacific Railway. The railroading general pushed through construction of the CPR’s transcontinental line and then went on to become the company’s president. During his time with the CPR, Van Horne developed a telegraph service, launched the Empress line of Pacific steamships in 1891, and founded CP Hotels. He capped his career by opening up Cuba’s interior with a railway.

A man of prodigious energy and many talents, he also became Canada’s foremost art collector and one of the country’s leading financiers. For all of his amazing accomplishments, Van Horne was knighted in 1894. When he died, Cuba staged a day of mourning and the CPR ceased operations for the day.

Valerie Knowles has published nine previous non-fiction books. From Telegrapher to Titan won the 2004 University of British Columbia Medal for Canadian Biography and the 2005 City of Ottawa Book Award for Non-Fiction. She lives in Ottawa.

Hap Wilson is back for another journey, this time on the lighter side of the adventure trail where the bizarre melds with the sublime. Nurtured by the writings of Canadian environmentalist and wannabe-Native Grey Owl, Wilson adopted a lifestyle similar to the 1930s conservationist but with his own twists and turns along a meandering path full of humorous misadventures. Wilson, too, learned much of his nature skills as a youth, paddling in Temagami, working as a wilderness canoe ranger, and following in the footsteps of one of Canada’s most revered outdoor icons.

The author recounts early days of winter camping and living on roadkill as well as teaching actor Pierce Brosnan how to throw knives and paddle a canoe for the Richard Attenborough film about Grey Owl. He also takes readers to a few of his favourite places and shares intimate secrets of wilderness living. Here, Grey Owl has returned as an ever-present critic — a buckskin-clad spectre in a modern world of Gore-Tex, plastic canoes, and gear freaks.

Hap Wilson, a self-taught artist and photographer, is one of North America’s best-known wilderness guides and canoeists, as well as the founder of the environmental group Earthroots. He lives in Rosseau, Ontario.

In spring 1917, Allied troops on the Western Front began the largest-ever artillery barrage on German positions, using more than 2.7 million shells. During the battle, they succeeded in capturing Vimy Ridge. However, the ultimate cost of fighting was immense — with a daily casualty rate 40 percent greater than the Somme and almost double that of Passchendaele, making the battle hour for hour the most dangerous campaign of the First World War.

In this major new account of the conflict, Peter Barton showcases more than 50 rediscovered British and German panoramic photographs of the battlegrounds, from the start of the first Battle of the Scarpe to the final push on Vimy Ridge. Also included are previously unpublished testimony, letters, and memoirs from the serving regiments, sourced from archives in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and elsewhere, along with stunning mapping, plans, and diagrams throughout.

Peter Barton is a historian, archaeologist, and filmmaker. He wrote The Battlefields of the First World War after researching the forgotten Imperial War Museum panorama archive for eight years. His other books include The Somme and Passchendaele. He is co-secretary of the All Party Parliamentary War Graves and Battlefields Heritage Group.

On April 22, 1915, the men of the 1st Canadian Division faced chlorine gas, a new lethal weapon against which they had no defence. In defiance of a particularly horrible death or, at the very least, severe lung injury, these untested Canadians fought almost continuously for five days, often hand-to-hand, as they clung stubbornly against overwhelming odds to a vital part of the Allied line after the French units on their left fled in panic. By doing so, they saved 50,000 troops in the Ypres salient from almost certain destruction and, in addition, prevented the momentum of the war from tipping in favour of the Germans.

In this new, deeply researched account, George H. Cassar skillfully blends into the history of the battle the graphic and moving words of the men on the front line. Illustrated with outstanding photographs and numerous maps, and drawing from diaries, letters, and documents from every level of planning, Hell in Flanders Fields is an authoritative, gripping drama of politics, strategy, and human courage.

George H. Cassar, who obtained his Ph.D. from McGill University, is a leading authority on the First World War. He has written many books on the subject, including Kitchener’s War, and Lloyd George at War, 1916–1918. He lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

First published in 1935, Pilgrims of the Wild is Grey Owl’s autobiographical account of his transition from successful trapper to conservationist. With his Iroquois wife, Anahareo, Grey Owl set out to protect the environment and the endangered beaver. Powerful in its simplicity, Pilgrims of the Wild tells the story of Grey Owl’s life of happy cohabitation with the wild creatures of nature and the healing powers of what he referred to as “the great Northland” of “Over the Hills and Far Away.”

A bestseller at the time, Pilgrims of the Wild helped establish Grey Owl’s international reputation as a conservationist. His legacy of warnings against the degradations of nature and the dangers of industry live on, despite the posthumous revelation that he wasn’t, in fact, the First Nations man he claimed to be.

Grey Owl (1888–1938), an Englishman, immigrated to Canada as Archibald Belaney in 1906 and quickly constructed an identity as a Native, assuming the Ojibway name Wa-sha-quon-asin and eventually settling in Saskatchewan on Ajawaan Lake. He spread his message of preservation through multiple bestsellers, including Tales of an Empty Cabin and Men of the Last Frontier.

Michael Gnarowski co-edited The Making of Modern Poetry in Canada, compiled The Concise Bibliography of English Canadian Literature, and edited the Critical Views on Canadian Writers Series for McGraw-Hill Ryerson. He lives in Kemptville, Ontario.

The second installment in Gavin K. Watt’s Revolutionary War trilogy, I am heartily ashamed, picks up where A dirty trifling piece of business left off. It’s a new year with new challenges.

An incredibly fierce Canadian winter was endured before raiding was resumed against the enemy’s frontiers. After the poor results of John Ross’s October 1781 raid, Frederick Haldimand chose to alter his strategy. For years his First Nations allies had sent small war parties against the frontiers, and in the summer of 1782 he gave command of large projects to Native leaders whose methods greatly challenged the rebels.

A new British ministry announced a cessation of arms in July, soon followed by peace talks. When Haldimand discovered that the treaty’s articles threatened the security of Canada and made no provisions for the aboriginals or loyalists, he con-fessed, “My soul is completely bowed down with grief … I am heartily ashamed.”

Gavin K. Watt is a founding member of the Museum of Applied Military History. His previous histories of the American Revolution as waged from Canada include Rebellion in the Mohawk Valley and Burning of the Valleys. He currently lives in King City, Ontario.

When the passage of the Abolition of Slavery Act, effective August 1, 1834, ushered in the end of slavery throughout the British Empire, people of African descent celebrated their newfound freedom. Now African-American fugitive slaves, free black immigrants, and the few remaining enslaved Africans could live unfettered lives in Canada — a reality worthy of celebration.

This new, well-researched book provides insight into the creation, development, and evolution of a distinct African-Canadian tradition through descriptive historical accounts and appealing images. The social, cultural, political, and educational practices of Emancipation Day festivities across Canada are explored, with emphasis on Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and British Columbia. Attention is given to the idea of freedom as a continuous journey for African Canadians from chattel slavery to equal rights.

Natasha L. Henry is the director of programs and an elementary teacher at a private school just outside Toronto. She is also a curriculum consultant and speaker specializing in the development of learning materials that focus on the African experience. She lives in Mississauga, Ontario.

Four Years on the Great Lakes978-1-55488-393-6$28.99 £16.99

The steamer Wexford, with its flared bow, tall masts, and open, canvas-sided hurricane deck, charmed spectators as it carried cargo across the Great Lakes. Under newly appointed 24-year-old captain Bruce Cameron, the Wexford ’s fateful final voyage was punctuated with opportunities to be saved from destruction, but his persistence in trying to make port at Goderich, Ontario, led to tragedy — a victim of the storm of 1913.

Over the next 87 years, the Wexford eluded many efforts to locate its remains, but was finally discovered in 2000 by a sailor using a fish-finding device. Since then the wreck has been visited by thousands but has been the victim of unfortunate plundering. Author Paul Carroll traces the steamer’s history from its British construction in 1883 through its days in the South American trade, the transition to become a “Laker,” the eventful storm, the search, the ship’s ultimate discovery in southern Lake Huron, and the controversy over how the wreck should be protected.

Paul Carroll, a “wharf rat” in his youth, brought forward the first Waterfront Development Plan for the long-term evolution of the Goderich, Ontario, shoreline and was involved with the sidescan sonar search for the Wexford. He lives near Goderich.

Come on a nostalgic and exciting journey along the Canadian shores of the Great Lakes. Visit a world very different from today’s hectic and turbulent place, a world where people explored the Great Lakes and shot the Lachine Rapids for the sheer joy of travelling on the water in steamers large and small.

The 307 harbour scenes in this book range from Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) way up on the northern shore of Lake Superior, to the Niagara Region of Lake Ontario, and on to the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Port of Montreal.

In more than 42 years of collecting Great Lakes postcards, Lorenzo and Carol Marcolin have accumulated an important visual history of the Great Lakes. Lovingly restored, without tampering with their historical veracity, the cards reveal a landscape appealing for its scenic beauty yet also repellent for its industrial ugliness.

Lorenzo Marcolin was born and raised in Port NcNicoll in the Georgian Bay region. He always had an interest in the Great Lakes, especially in the boats, shipping activity, and history. He graduated from the University of Toronto in medicine and trained in orthopaedic surgery in Cleveland, Ohio.

A Canadian invention that very few persons have heard of had a profound effect on the pine-logging industry during the late 1800s and the early decades of the 1900s. The logging of eastern white and red pine in Ontario’s Ottawa Valley, Georgian Bay, and north shore of Lake Huron was of major economic and social importance. The accessible stands of timber when logged were routed along fast-flowing rivers leading into the Ottawa River or Georgian Bay.

Once such stands were depleted, the logging moved into the more distant hinterlands. But how to move the timber? Something was needed that could transport booms of logs both on a lake and then overland to the next lake, using its own power. Steam power was the new technology of the day. Enter the inventors John West and his partner James Peachey, who with their foundry staff built the initial steam warping tug, which was unveiled in 1889 at Simcoe, Ontario, the first of many that popularly became known as northern alligators.

Harry Barrett, a long-time resident of Norfolk County, is a noted naturalist, conservationist, and historian. Barrett was the founding chair of the Long Point Foundation for Conservation. He lives in Port Dover, Ontario.

Clarence F. Coons, now deceased, was a well-known professional forester in Ontario. Coons did the original research for this book, and Harry Barrett completed the work. He lived in Kemptville, Ontario.

In this rare combination of history and memoir, Lorraine O’Donnell Williams details life within Toronto’s Beach community in the 1930s and 1940s from the vantage point of her front verandah, which abutted the boardwalk. Her extensive research has uncovered numerous hidden facets of the heritage of this exceptional neighbourhood, including the stories of what was in its time one of North America’s most remarkable amusement parks, the elegant dance hall, and how the area escaped becoming a railway corridor.

Also included is an array of prominent personalities for whom The Beach has been home. Growing up in The Beach infused Williams and her friends with a resiliency as multifaceted as the moods of Lake Ontario and a foundation as firm as the grand old willow trees that line the boardwalk. This book is a must for history buffs, especially those with an interest in Toronto.

Lorraine O’Donnell Williams was born and raised in The Beach district of Toronto. Her career has included senior positions in the correctional, forensic psychiatry, and psychiatric fields of social work. She recently retired from private practice to write full-time and currently lives in Markham, Ontario.

Travel with Ron Brown as he probes the shoreline of the Canadian side of Lake Ontario and discover its hidden heritage. Here were the beginning of the popular American Chautauqua movement, the creation of Canada’s first mounted police to patrol Ontario’s gold fields, and the once-flourishing commercial fishing fleets. Explore “ghost ports,” forgotten coves, ghost rail lines, historical lighthouses, rum-running lore, and unique features such as Scarborough’s “Dutch chapel,” the alvars of Prince Edward County, Second World War gun emplacements, and a shipwreck visible from the shore.

Even within burgeoning cities such as Hamilton and Toronto, there are forgotten stories and unusual sights. Hikers and cyclists will find that much of the unseen heritage is accessible along the new Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail. Brown offers a treasure trove of the past to entice today’s explorers of Ontario’s history.

Ron Brown, author, geographer, and travel writer, has long had a love affair with the landscapes of Canada and has written many books and travel articles on the little-known aspects of the past. He is a member of the Travel Media Association of Canada and is a past chair of The Writers’ Union of Canada. Brown lives in Toronto.

Manitoba’s Hayes River runs over 600 kilometres from near Norway House to Hudson Bay. On its rush to the sea the Hayes races over forty-five rapids and waterfalls as it drops from the Precambrian to the Hudson Bay Lowlands. This great waterway, the largest naturally flowing river in Manitoba, served as the highway for settlers bound for the Red River colony, ferrying their worldly goods in York boats and canoes, struggling against the mighty currents.

Traditionally used for transport and hunting by the indigenous Cree, the Hayes became a major fur trade route in the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, being explored by such luminaries as Pierre Radisson (1682), Henry Kelsey (1690), David Thompson (1784), Sir John Franklin (1819), and J.B. Tyrrell (1892). This is the account of the author’s invitational journey (he was thrilled to be asked) on the Hayes from Norway House to Oxford House by traditional York boat with a crew of Cree, and later, from Oxford House to York Factory by canoe in the company of other intrepid canoeists — modern-day voyageurs reliving the past.

Anthony Dalton is president of the Canadian Authors’ Association. His books include Alone Against the Arctic and Baychimo, plus many illustrated articles in magazines such as Wooden Boat and Yachting. Dalton is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club. He lives in Delta, British Columbia.

The development of the Avro Arrow was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the CIA play in the scrapping of the project? Who in our government was involved in that decision? What, if anything, did Canada get in return? Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes? And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program?

When Storms of Controversy was first published in 1992, its answers to these questions sent a shock wave across the country. Using never-before-released documents, the book exploded the myth that design flaws, cost overruns, or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow.

Now, in this fully revised fourth edition of the bestseller, author Palmiro Campagna brings readers up-to-date on the CF-105 Arrow, the most innovative, sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s.

Palmiro Campagna works for the Department of National Defence and has acted as Canadian representative to NATO in the area of electromagnetics in military aircraft. Campagna is the author of The UFO Files as well as Requiem for a Giant. He lives in Ottawa.

The 21st century has brought the perfect storm of conditions to create substantive global instability. This contemporary operating environment (COE) is characterized by complexity, ambiguity, volatility, and constant danger in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a human invention that requires a human solution.

Special operation forces (SOF), a group comprised of highly trained personnel with the ability to deploy rapidly and apply special skills in a variety of environments and circumstances, is the logical force of choice for success in the COE. As a group that favours humans over hardware, it makes sense that they should be empowered with the tool of choice for the COE — cultural intelligence (CQ). CQ, or the ability to recognize the shared beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviours of a group of people, and most important, to apply this knowledge toward a specific goal, is this potent weapon.

Leveraging the “People Puzzle” makes a convincing argument for the powerful union of the “force of choice” with the “tool of choice.”

Previously, she was the general editor of The Difficult War: Perspectives on Insurgency and Special Operations Forces. She lives in Prince George, British Columbia.

The year was 1910 and signs of progress were in the air. That June a new steam ferry for the Toronto Island Company was launched and christened the Trillium. Only briefly mentioned in the local dailies at the time, the double-ended, side-paddled island ferry cruised Toronto Bay for nearly 50 years. After 46 years of service, the Trillium retired in 1956, only to be saved from the scrapyard in 1973. The Trillium made its second debut in 1976 as a fully operational steam ferry and is still in service today.

As the Trillium reaches the century mark, Mike Filey revisits the history of the memorable Canadian landmark and serves up a few extra bits! With a new introduction and updated photographs, Filey traces the Trillium’s remarkable rise and fall and commemorates one of Toronto’s finest treasures.

Mike Filey has written nearly two dozen books on various facets of Toronto’s past, including A Toronto Album, The TTC Story, and Toronto: The Way We Were, which received a 2009 Heritage Toronto Award of Merit. For more than 35 years he has contributed a popular column, “The Way We Were,” to the Sunday edition of the Toronto Sun. He lives in Toronto.

Small things can often mean a great deal. For the past five years readers of the Toronto Star’s website have been telling one another that as they shared their stories in a feature called “Acts of Kindness.” The common thread is that a stranger helped when it was needed most, without thought of a reward and often without leaving a name.

Since its debut in December 2004, “Acts of Kindness” has become a daily fixture at thestar.com. About 4,000 stories have been submitted and 2,000 have been published. Acts of Kindness, the book, represents the best of the best — a collection of 200 of the most memorable tales.

The stories are a reminder that goodness is non-denominational, non-political, and transferable across race and language. They also remind us that although our lives are full of hard realities, the smallest gesture can raise a spirit or lift a heart, and the time to do it is now.

Adam Mayers is an editor at thestar.com, the Toronto Star’s website, and started the online “Acts of Kindness” feature in 2004. Mayers studied journalism in England, is a former business editor and columnist, is the author of four books, and has appeared on TV and radio. He lives in Oakville, Ontario.

Con men, swindlers, snake-oil salesmen, carpetbaggers, and plain everyday liars and cheats — these names and the scoundrels behind them have been around for hundreds of years, though their dodges and deceptions have been refined with the passage of time.

The worldwide growth of criminal fraud has mushroomed to such a degree that traditional law-enforcement techniques have been unable to cope effectively with the fallout. Criminal fraud is a billion-dollar industry and has become a staple of organized crime, rivalling drugs and prostitution as major sources of income. In North America the courts and governments fail to treat these crimes with the seriousness they deserve, often placing the blame on victims, or at the very least making them culpable.

Former Calgary police detective and fraud expert Gordon G. Leek illustrates how a variety of frauds work and how to protect yourself from them, including simple cheque scams, elaborate telemarketing schemes, Internet swindles, and identity theft.

Gordon G. Leek was a member of the Calgary Police Service for more than 25 years. With the Commercial Crime Unit he served as the primary investigator and liaison for the Calgary Police Service with the Alberta Partnership Against Cross-Border Fraud. He lives in Calgary.

As uncertainty continues in the U.S. automotive industry, Lemon-Aid Used Cars and Trucks 2010–2011 shows buyers how to pick the cheapest and most reliable vehicles from the past 30 years of production. Lemon-Aid guides are unlike any other car and truck book on the market. Phil Edmonston, Canada’s automotive “Dr. Phil” for 40 years, pulls no punches.

Like five books in one, Lemon-Aid Used Cars and Trucks is an exposé of car scams and gas consumption lies; a do-it-yourself service manual; an independent guide that covers beaters, lemons, and collectibles; an archive of secret service bulletins granting free repairs; and a legal primer that even lawyers can’t beat! Phil delivers the goods on free fixes for Chrysler, Ford, and GM engine, transmission, brake, and paint defects; lets you know about Corvette and Mustang tops that fly off; gives the lowdown on Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota engines and transmissions; and provides the latest information on computer module glitches.

Phil Edmonston, Canada’s toughest customer, is a former MP and Consumers Union Board Member. Over the past 40 years, he has written more than 130 Lemon-Aid bestsellers. About three decades ago, Nissan and Honda sued him for $5 million — and lost. Phil lives in Panama.

Renowned author and journalist Sheila McLeod Arnopoulos uses her talent for investigative reporting to take us deep into the poorest villages in India. Yet, far from being passive victims of their circumstances, the women who live there have joined forces and are making astute use of microcredit to break the cycle of poverty.

Microcredit was launched by Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus and consists of very small loans made primarily to women for the production of essential commodities or to start small businesses. Based on a number of trips to India between 2001 and 2008, Arnopoulos shows her sense of solidarity and desire for authenticity by sharing the daily life of these villagers. This first-person account of her extensive travels focuses primarily on these women’s inspiring success stories. After witnessing many such situations first-hand, she believes these villages have a potential strength equal to that of the modern, high-tech cities in India.

Sheila McLeod Arnopoulos is the author of a novel and two other non-fiction books, shared a Governor General’s Literary Award for The English Fact in Quebec, and has earned several journalism prizes for exposés about marginalized women and minorities. A former journalism professor, she spent 21 months in India meeting grassroots women using microcredit to launch businesses and achieve social change. She lives in Montreal.

The UFO Files digs deep into the government’s archives to unravel the true story of Canada’s fascinating connection to the UFO phenomenon. Weaving together eyewitness accounts and secret government files, including newly declassified documents, Palmiro Campagna relates some startling episodes in Canadian UFO history. These stories include the revelations made to Wilbert Smith, a Canadian Ministry of Transport engineer, and the unexplained case of Stefan Michalak, whose close encounter with a strange, burning hot craft left him physically scarred. It also explores the United States’ so-called “black” program, which may have originated with the Avrocar (also known as Project Silver Bug), the United States Air Force flying saucer built in Canada.

The Toronto Star noted that The UFO Files provides “a detailed and convincing portrait presented with an astonishing array of archival evidence and photographs.” While George Filer, New Jersey State director of the Mutual UFO Network, said this book “is well worth reading and helps unravel the true story of UFOs in Canada.”

As Palmiro Campagna demonstrates, the truth is indeed out there.

Palmiro Campagna works for the Department of National Defence and has acted as Canadian representative to NATO in the area of electromagnetics in military aircraft. Campagna is the author of the bestselling Storms of Controversy as well as Requiem for a Giant. He lives in Ottawa.

Despite advances in DNA testing, forensics, and the investigative skills used by police, hundreds of crimes remain unsolved across Canada every year. With every passing day trails grow colder and decades can pass before a new lead or witness comes forward … if one comes forward.

In Unsolved, Robert J. Hoshowsky examines 12 crimes that continue to haunt us. Some cases are well-known, while others have virtually disappeared from the public eye. All of the cases remain open, and many are being re-examined by police using the latest tools and technology. Hoshowsky takes the reader through all aspects of the crimes and how police are trying to solve them using 3-D facial reconstructions, DNA testing, age-enhancement drawings, original crime scene photos, and more.

None of the individuals profiled in Unsolved deserved their fate, but their stories deserve to be told and their killers need to be brought to justice.

Robert J. Hoshowsky is an investigative journalist who has explored first-hand the world of cults, bikers, cops, killers, and thieves. A former researcher-reporter at Maclean’s, his work has appeared in more than 100 magazines and newspapers worldwide. His highly acclaimed non-fiction book, The Last to Die, was shortlisted for the prestigious Arthur Ellis Award. He lives in Toronto.

Why write in the first place, other than your grocery list? Eric Nicol believes it’s the second most satisfying thing you can do lying down. But it’s not enough to want to write. You must need to write.

Now, after 73 years of scribbling, Eric holds forth on dangling participles, punctuation, and literary jargon. What’s more, he answers the burning question: “How much should creative writers depend on editors to correct their grammar?”

Then Eric provides a wide selection of essays to demonstrate how it’s done. These include a dramatic demonstration of the chutzpah of a big Tom wild turkey and its harem on a B.C. Gulf Island, the discovery that Eric’s one-way-view window in the bathroom has been installed incorrectly, the trials and tribulations of computers and the creative process, and a riposte to the query, “Are nipples really necessary on guys?”

Pure Nicol. Minted in Canada. Priceless!

Eric Nicol was born in Kingston, Ontario, and claims to remember the dinosaurs well. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with an arts degree and a writing habit. He is the author of more than 35 books and has won the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour three times. He lives in Vancouver.

Jim Myers is a painfully shy kid living in Toronto’s west end Bloorcourt Village. Rarely is he able to muster enough courage to say anything beyond “ya” or “dunno.” After school he hangs around with his neighbour and only friend, Oleg Khernofsky, playing basketball against a no parking sign in a laneway. In the evenings, he haunts Nicky’s Diner, a restaurant owned by Oleg’s uncle.

On the first day of junior high, Jim crosses paths with Charlie Crouse, a brash, mouthy kid full of wild stories about his past. Charlie takes Jim under his wing and introduces him to the electronic strip poker machine at the Fun Village Arcade in Koreatown, a Queen Street hooker who calls herself Steffi Graf, and the diverse sounds and utterances of his landlord’s three lovers. As Jim and Charlie’s friendship grows, however, the realities of looming adulthood seep into their lives with surprising consequences.

Jules Lewis was born in Toronto and is still based there. He has lived in Montreal, New York City, and Istanbul, and has written for Toronto’s Eye Weekly. This is his debut novel.

In The Whiteoak Brothers, the Jalna household is electric with secrecy and excited expectation. It is now 1923, and while young love blossoms between Pheasant and Piers, Aunt Augusta’s friend, Dilly Warkworth, arrives at Jalna and tries to snare the heart of Renny. Eden meets a persuasive mining broker whose new venture promises miracles. One by one, Eden persuades the other Whiteoaks to part with their savings — even old Adeline.

In Return to Jalna, the Whiteoak family reunites after a year of separation. Piers, Renny, and Wakefield return in 1943 during the Second World War. Finch has been off on a concert tour, and Maurice has come home from Ireland. Fifteen-year-old Adeline returns from school and is now the stunning reflection of her namesake. It’s a time of change and strain, but the family remains united against all others.

Mazo de la Roche, in 1927, was an impoverished writer in Toronto when she won a $10,000 prize from The Atlantic Monthly for her novel Jalna. That book and the 15 subsequent novels in the series became immediate bestsellers. Jalna was eventually adapted for stage, screen, and television.

Self Condemned, originally published in 1954, tells the story of Professor René Harding and his wife, Essie, as they find themselves in Momaco, a fictionalized version of Toronto, following René’s resignation as an academic in London, England. Reduced to a position at the second-rate University of Momaco, René and Essie suffer through a bleak and oppressive isolation in a dreary and alien city.

The novel, a devastating, disturbing satire of life in wartime Canada, explores the difficulty individuals face as they struggle to adapt to new surroundings while preserving their sense of wholeness, as well as the bond that develops between people during a shared experience of isolation.

Wyndham Lewis (1882–1957) was born on his father’s yacht off Nova Scotia but grew up in England. The author of many novels, including The Revenge for Love, The Apes of God, and Tarr, he was associated with T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. Lewis spent the Second World War in Toronto, and his experiences there formed the basis of Self Condemned.

Allan Pero is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Western Ontario. He has published papers about Wyndham Lewis on the aesthetics of death and on hysteria and history. He lives in London, Ontario.

Travelling through the Chinese underworld, clandestine drug laboratories, and biker-ridden badlands, the troubled duo encounter murder, political corruption, police paranoia, and psychosis, but can they find love and redemption, too?

Deadly nightshade — the poison plant par excellence … and in historic Quebec City at an important scientific conference concerning the genetic manipulation of trees it means murder!

Police, RCMP, and a mysterious FBI agent from Washington converge on the scene. But the sharpest eye belongs to Sam Montcalm, a despised “bedroom snooper” from Ottawa whose primary concern is to clear a First Nations activist of the crime. Sam is middle-aged, tough, and sophisticated, yet he’s also a lone wolf who feels displaced nearly everywhere, and his relations with his colleagues, the police — and with women — are always complicated. “You’re a psychic wound without a health card,” a friend comments.

The story moves to its surprising climax as Montcalm follows the trail of murder back to Canada’s capital and into the Gatineau Hills, his deep sense of cynicism about human nature confirmed as he closes in on the killer and struggles to come to terms with himself.

Tom Henighan is an Ottawa writer and editor. His fiction includes The Well of Time, shortlisted for the Seal Books First Novel Award; Mercury Man, shortlisted for the Red Maple Award; and Doom Lake Holiday, a teen mystery set in Ontario’s Rideau Lakes.

Biography

January

By the time he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in 2007, Mischa Weisz had all he needed to face the fight of his life. A child of Holocaust survivors, he felt distant from his parents and had no idea of his own heritage until he was well into his teens — too late to adopt it as his own.

When Mischa and his first wife split, he battled for custody of their son and daughter, emerging as an unlikely but devoted single father living on unemploy-ment insurance as he plotted his move into his own business. His work with computers and bank machines positioned him to take advantage when the Can adian government opened the Interac network to independent operators. Weisz grew his company into a powerhouse, amassing a fortune processing ATM withdrawals that Canadians make at gas stations, variety stores, casinos, and other locations.

On October 2, 2009, Mischa passed away at the age of 53. In this inspiring memoir he documents how it’s possible to thrive even in the toughest conditions and dem-onstrates how he lived on his terms while battling cancer for more than two years.

Mischa Weisz was born in Barrie, Ontario, and grew up in Hamilton. He set up TNS Smart Network, a key provider of access to the Interac network for 13,000 independently operated bank machines across Canada in the 1990s and sold the company in 2007.

Wade Hemsworth is a reporter with the Hamilton Spectator and is the author of two previous works of non-fiction, Killing Time and Both My Legs.

When Ivy’s father, Alva, arrives unexpectedly in Larkin, he turns out not to be the Prince Charming she imagined, but an illiterate peddler. In the course of their travels, Ivy meets teenager Charlie Bayliss, orphaned as an infant and raised by his aunt on a farm outside Larkin. The transition to life inside the Arctic Circle is a tough one. With temperatures of -30 Celsius, a hulking monster named Joseph Kiktorak threatening him at every turn, and not a lacrosse ball in sight, Mike’s resentment at moving north escalates.

As his friendships with local youth develop, Mike is introduced to the amazing spectacle and athleticism of traditional “Arctic Sports.” When his father witnesses the natural talent of Mike’s new friends, the idea of an Inuvik lacrosse team is born. With hearts full of desire, the motley group of athletes heads south to participate in the Baggataway Lacrosse Tournament, and to face Mike’s former team, the Rams.

Learning that a new force called the North-West Mounted Police has come west, the brothers continue south to locate them and ask for help.

The NWMP commander, Colonel George French, attempts to have the boys escorted home. However, the brothers manage to tag along on the 800-mile march of NWMP men and wagons headed for Fort Whoop-Up, in what will one day be Alberta, with the hope that they’ll catch up with the thieves.

Eleven-year-old Danny Ryan and 19-year-old Wendy Marshall think their friendship is only about looking after two baby raccoons that Danny has rescued. But when a bank holdup upsets Wendy so much that she can hardly stand to be around people, she leaves her job as a teller, retreats to a farm, and surrounds herself with injured and orphaned wildlife. Danny, neglected at home and considered weird in a town where other boys are into hunting, finds peace on the farm, too, plus excitement, as he and Wendy adopt ever more exotic animals such as llamas, bobcats, a serval, an ocelot, and a blind lynx.

Over time the two friends develop a bond that goes beyond care of the animals to caring for each other. As it turns out, Wendy rescues not just wildlife but Danny, as well. What’s more, the bank robbers are still at large and still a threat, and Danny, now 14, must act to save Wendy’s life.

“Invading Canada is an old American tradition. Invading Canada successfully is not.”

— Peter Carlson, Washington Post

Canadians have been celebrated participants in numerous conflicts on foreign soils, but most Canadians aren’t aware that they’ve also had to defend themselves numerous times at home. From U.S. General Benedict Arnold’s covetous attempts to declare Canada the 14th colony during the American Revolution, to the German U-boat battles in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the Second World War, Canada has successfully defended itself against all invaders.

Jennifer Crump brings to life the battles fought by Canadians to ensure the country’s independence, from the almost ludicrous Pork n’ Beans War to the deadly War of 1812. Then she reveals the complex invasion plans by the United States and Germany to conquer Canada. The most amazing of these plots was the nearly 100-page blueprint for invading Canada commissioned by the U.S. government in 1935 — a scheme that remains current today!

Jennifer Crump is a freelance journalist and author whose work has appeared in numerous North American magazines and several anthologies. The author of a Toronto guidebook and two previous books on the War of 1812, she lives in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario.

By the late spring of 1944, the world had been at war with Germany and its allies for five gruelling, murderous years. Then, in the dead of night on June 5–6, hundreds of elite Canadian paratroopers hurled themselves from aircraft well behind enemy lines to initiate actions that were critical if the Allied invasion fleet hoped to have any measure of success in France.

Men of Steel is the gripping story of some of Canada’s toughest and most daring soldiers in the Second World War and what they did in their finest hours. Through the lens of these gallant paratroopers we glimpse the chaos and destruction of combat in the greatest invasion in military history. From aircraft formations striking out on a turbulent flight across the English Channel to deadly hand-to-hand combat in the Normandy countryside, Men of Steel delivers a detailed account of Canadian paratroopers and their crucial role in D-Day.

Colonel Bernd Horn has held key positions in the Canadian Forces, including deputy commander of Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. An adjunct professor of history at the Royal Military College of Canada, he has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 28 books on military history and military affairs. He lives in Kingston, Ontario.
