A Prayer For Those We Love

Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to thy never-failing care and love, for this and the life to come; knowing that thou art doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

This is “RiverDance” with boots and rifles! I can’t remember ever seeing a display of precision to beat this! THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF PRECISION! Those are U.S. made Garand M-1 rifles (WWII), and they are heavy weapons (9 POUNDS EACH). When that one young fellow goes on his own - YOU’VE NEVER SEEN

A RIFLE SPUN THAT FAST - note the collective “Ooooooooo !” from the audience.

Did you know that each post can put their own pictures and information of upcoming events on their post page on the website?

Anyone interested in putting their post pictures, information or upcom-ing events on the web please contact Nancy Shiverdecker [email protected] and I will get you set up. It is not rocket science. Anyone with basic computer skills can do this.

AMVETS Post 201 Holds “Salute to Veterans” at Lake Royale Clubhouse

On November 13, AMVETs Post 201 held the 2nd annual “Salute to Vet-erans” in recognition of Veterans Day at the Lake Royale Clubhouse. The ceremony was opened with a prayer by Rev. Daniel Jenks, Lt. Col.

US Army (Retired) and Pastor of Franklinton United Methodist Church. The National Anthem was performed in a duet by Linda & David McCray of the Royale Aires. Forrest Johnson Adjutant Post 201 led us in the Pledge of Al-legiance, and then, welcoming remarks were given by Dick Maryman, Com-mander Post 201.

Guest speakers included: Stuart Nottingham, representing the Lake Royale POA; Victor Alston - Franklin County Veterans Service Officer; Oceanous Lowry- AMVET NC Department Commander; and Representative John May of the NC House of Representatives. Each added meaning and purpose to the event leading to our key note speaker.

Sergeant Major Jacob Roth US Army (Retired) provided the key note ad-dress. He is the present NC Commander of Ex-POWs and had personally been held captive for over 37 months by the North Koreans during the Korean War. His personal account of his own capture and the “Tiger Death March” that fol-lowed was a moving experience with details that are dehumanizing at the hands of the enemy. He along with 700+ military captives and civilians depended upon faith, fellow detainees and survival instincts plus perseverance that few of us can relate to in our lives. Only a small percentage of the Korean War POWs have lived to tell of their experience.

We recognized collectively the veterans of each war and conflict of the 20th and 21st century. Due recognition was given to one World War II veteran who joined us for the ceremony. We were honored by his presence.

Opie Pearce laid a wreath at the podium in recognition of those veterans who have passed on. Lt. Col. Jenks provided a moving rendition of “God Bless the USA” before he closed our ceremony with a blessing.

Currituck CountyVeteran’s Day Parade 2010

The Moyock service organizations of the American Legion Post 531, AMVETS Post 269, VFW Post 10949 and the Moyock Ruritans will be putting on the annual Currituck

County Veteran’s Day Parade once again this year on Thursday, November the 11th, 2010 with staging by 10 am and the parade commencing precisely at 11am. Refresh-ments will be provided at a modest cost by Moyock’s American Legion Post 531, and marching units of U.S. Marines, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard will be par-ticipating as well. Patriotic music and pa-rade announcements will be provided by DJ John Downs Sr.

Of very special interest for this year’s event will be the inclusion of Pilmoor Me-morial’s “Pre-Schoolers”, who will be rid-ing in the parade in a trailer decorated by themselves and waving flags provided by Moyock’s VFW Post 10949 in support of our county’s veterans (all 14 of the kids - and trust me, they really put some effort into their trailer).

This effort was also co-sponsored by American Legion Post 531, VFW Post 10949, and the Ruritans - all organizations from Moyock, NC. Despite the threat of rain - we had a good turn out, and a lot of fun doing the parade.

Welcome sign

Ok gang - when you have a chance - check out the “Welcome to Moyock” sign posted up at the Moyock Wel-

come Center. LOOKS GREAT :)I won’t go into all the battle details other

than to say that, thanks to some close cooperation with Commis-sioner Paul O’Neal - I managed to get our AMVETS and their VFW Posted on the Moyock sign - which you can now all see.

Dear Mr. Cooke,It was a particular pleasure to meet with you, Mr. Moore, and Mr. Wilson

this past Tuesday and I am exceptionally grateful for your extremely generous donation to Mooresville High School’s Naval Junior ROTC Program. The money will be put to good, and immediate, use in ensuring that each Cadet is able to participate in all the events and activities we offer without regard to their family’s personal financial status. Your AMVETS Post has been, and continues to be, our strongest and most consistent supporter, not only financially but also in providing annual recognition to some of our best and brightest Cadets.

On behalf of Chief Tate and all the Cadets of the Mooresville High School Naval Junior ROTC Program, please know we are very grateful for your support. You have the respect and gratitude of us all and we thank you for your generosity as well as your service. It will never be taken for granted.

27 October 2010 – Breast Cancer

Awareness Month – “Think Pink II”

Our yard sale for St Jude. Auxiliary members Linda Rumsey, Ingrid Weaver and Rachel Okun.

Having lost my mother this past year to Breast Cancer and Alzheimer’s, I de-cided to choose the Lower Cape Fear

Hospice and Care Center for the Think Pink packages.

Sixteen care packages were provided, on behalf of AMVETS Post #906, to the female patients. The pink packages were wrapped in a pink toile, a pink ribbon and a rose. They con-tained some small personal hygiene items and tagged with our logo and post number, the pink ribbon symbol with the message “Because We Care”.

The Lower Cape Fear Hospice is a beautiful care center filled with many caring and loving nurses and nurses aides. It really takes a special person to fill their shoes.

It is located in Wilmington and has 12 pri-vate rooms with views of the beautifulJapanese water garden and other gardens.

If you or a family member ever needs that individual care, they can be reached at (910)762-9422. God bless.

post 910 - aLBermarLeHoliday Celebrations

AMVETS Post 910 has been quite busy over the holiday season. We set a goal of providing 15 fami-

lies with food baskets and to send items to the troops overseas. With the help of Stanly County residents and businesses we were able to reach our goal. We de-livered 15 large baskets of food to fami-lies and sent four boxes to the troops plus accomplish quite a bit more. We took personal care baskets to 10 residents in nursing homes, put together 10 Christ-mas stockings for children, donated two large containers of beads to a young lady in Norwood so she could make bracelets. Helped a family give their child a Christ-mas with a stocking and presents for all in the family, plus a basket of food. All this was done because of donations from residents and merchants. Stanley County sure stepped up. Thank you for all your donations and help.

We had a Halloween party which was a great success. Gerry Pion and Hazel Hudson were the costume winners. We had quite a few members who dressed in costume, we all danced to a great band and had plenty of food to eat.

Twenty-four members participated in the Veterans day parade. Luckily the weather was great.

We sponsored an Elvis show, with several Elvis personators. Johnny cash also put in an appearance. Plus two sis-ters, 11 and 12. It was a great three-hour show.

Sons of AMVETS ReportThe Sons membership is down for the year.

The Son’s regret that they can’t have the fishing tournament or beach party, but we

hope to participate next year with the family pic-nic. The Son’s are seeking clothes, coat, and hats for the Vets at the V.A. hospitals. We also need phone cards for the Veterans to call their families.

The Sons are selling tickets for gas or cash. The price is a $250 cash or gas card. A dollar donation enters the raffle. This is to be given away at the April DEC meeting. I am looking forward to going to Washington in March with the Sons to talk with our Senators and Congressmen about the veterans and their ben-efits. We also will be going to the monuments where we place wreaths. I will be carrying the Sons N.C. flag during the ceremony.

DFAS customers affected by 2011 tax changes

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 10, 2011 - DFAS customers may be affected by recent changes to the tax law, tax tables and other legislation.

Some of the changes include:

• Reduction in Social Security tax withholding from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011 • Expiration of the Making Work Pay credit, which may increase the amount of wages subject to income tax withholding • 1.4 percent pay increase for Military service members

The amount of the changes in net pay will depend on several factors to include the following:

• Income level • W-4 elections

Military Reservists and National Guard members will be the first to see potential changes in their pay as a result of the law. Any changes will be reflected in their January 5 paycheck.

Active duty military personnel will see their pay changes in their January 14 paycheck and reflected in the January LES.

DOD civilian and other federal employees paid by DFAS will see social security withholding changes reflected in paychecks based on the pay period ending January 1 with paydates on January 7, 11 or 13. The tax withholding changes for 2011 will be implemented for the pay period ending January 15th with paydates on January 21, 25 or 28.

Military retirees and annuitants will see the changes reflected in their March 1 payment. Retirees can view the changes in myPay on February 1 and annuitants can view the changes in myPay on February 18. Account statements with the new net pay amounts reflected will be mailed to all retirees and annuitants affected by the change in February.

Please ensure you review your pay statement to see how these changes will potentially affect you.

DFAS customers with questions on the changes should contact their financial advisors or tax consultants for more details.

Tax information can be found at the IRS website www.irs.gov.

Air National Guard director: Equitable treatment of all a "moral imperative"

By Bryan RippleDefense Equal Opportunity Management Institute

Air Force Lt. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, director of the Air National Guard, addresses Guard and Reserve graduates of the Defense Equal Oppor-tunity Management Institute's Equal Opportunity Advisor Reserve

Component Program on Feb. 4, 2011, at the Institute. The EOARCP curriculum develops a base of knowledge and skills that allow graduates to assess human re-lations climates in the organizations they serve, and to provide advice and assis-tance to commanders to prevent, reduce or eliminate discriminatory practices. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. 1st Class Brian G. Rhodes) (Released)

"Our servicemembers in the National Guard and Reserve are indeed our most valuable asset," Air Force Lt. Gen. Harry “Bud” Wyatt told 87 National Guard and Reserve graduates of the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute’s Equal Opportunity Advisor Reserve Component Program.

“As leaders we owe them our very best efforts – and it cannot be with closed minds that we undertake this endeavor. We cannot meet mission success without the expertise and dedication of our equal opportunity specialists and advisors.”

EO programs have made important contributions to all Department of De-fense servicemembers and civilians serving in an environment of dignity, equal-ity and respect, Wyatt said.

Wyatt highlighted a photo of Army National Guard Sgt. Leigh Ann Hes-ter, vehicle commander, 617th Military Police Company, Richmond, Ky., who

received the Silver Star at Camp Liberty, Iraq.

Hester is the first female Sol-dier since World War II to receive the Silver Star.

New and evolving legislation may change to allow full equal op-portunity for women, including in combat, Wyatt said.

“DEOMI graduates are the ‘change agents’ that help to edu-cate people on the need – the mor-al imperative – to be equitable in our treatment of all people,” Wyatt said.

“Equal Opportunity Advisors recognize the responsibility to speak the truth in the face of adversity and injus-tice and are representatives of their commanders,” he said.

Below are links to this week’s stories about all the great work being done by you and your fellow National Guardmembers - both here at home and overseas.
