    A Brief Anthropology of AlcoholInstructor: Dustin McKenzie

    Whether you are a teetotaler or a party-animal, it iseasy to see that the consumption of alcoholic beveragesinuences culture. In fact, some anthropologists haveargued that the production of beer and wine was thecausal factor leading to the agricultural revolutionand the growth of civilization nearly 10,000 yearsago. Cultural drinking patterns are affected by politics,gender, religion and even socio-economic class.Cultural norms and values dictate what we drink, howmuch we drink, and even where and why we drink.We will discuss the early development of alcohol,the negative effects of prohibition, and the growth ofthis billion dollar industry among other intoxicatingsubjects pertaining to alcohol and culture.

    Food is a fundamental human necessity, essential tothe sustenance and survival of our species. Culturapractices inuence what we eat, how we acquireprepare and even consume food. Food is directlyassociated with cultural identity. People may change

    their dress, speech, and even religion before theyalter their food ways. In addition, recent researchhas shown that specic food products includingcod sh, sugar, and salt have had signicant impacton world history. From hunter-gatherers to modernagricultural societies, this course will focus on theelaborate relationship between human culture andthe foods we eat.

    Learning more about your ancestors can be afascinating journey, whether the quest is to ndancestral homelands, make a family tree or solve a

    family mystery. This course will help participantsfollow in the footsteps of their ancestors whileavoiding common pitfalls in family history research.

    The course will start with the basic steps necessaryfor beginning a family history project, including anintroduction to the Genealogical Proof Standardand instruction regarding the preparation of aresearch plan.     The Tibetan Book ofLiving and DyingInstructor: John ProvostMany people approach death with fear and confusion.The aim of this class is to offer another perspective,from the ancient text of The Tibetan Book of theDead, as interpreted and commentated by Sogyal

    Rinpoche in his book, The Tibetan Book of Living andDying. Well explore why Buddhists feel its essentialto face our deaths with as much consciousness andunderstanding as we can.     Roxane Buck-Ezcurra is a writer and editor. Sheconsults with not-for-prot organizations, charitablefoundations and independent publishers. Her projectsoften focus on natural history and marine topics,allowing her clients to benet from her familiarity withenvironmental and conservation issues.

    Julianne Burton-Carvajal, longtime Professorof Spanish Literature and Latin American Cinema atthe University of California Santa Cruz, has publishedextensively on the social, architectural and artisticheritage of this region. She also organizes art and historyexhibitions at the Carmel Mission and elsewhere.

    Gregor Cailliet is Professor Emeritus of Biology(Ichthyology) at the Moss Landing Marine Lab. At sea,Mr. Cailliet collected shes and data on their habitats.In the lab, he studies sh life histories (feeding habits,

    age and growth, reproduction and demography).Along with his graduate students, Greg has pioneeredtechniques for determining and validating the age ofshes.

    Dick Crispo has become a Monterey Peninsulainstitution. He has exhibited internationally and hasearned many awards. His work is in numerous privateand public collections. Mr. Crispo recently publisheda book on art history on the Monterey Peninsula andco-wrote a history of the Carmel Art Association.

    Renee Curry has a PhD in English and has publishedwidely (three books and over twenty articles) inliterature, literary theory, and lm studies. Dr. Curryhas taught literature for twenty-ve years at theuniversity level, and is currently the Dean of the Collegeof Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at CSUMB.

    Karen Davis is Senior Film Programmer for theMill Valley Film Festival. She teaches courses inworld cinema and cultural studies, and has beenon the faculty of several institutions, includingCSUMB and Vassar College. Ms. Davis has writtenproduced, and directed numerous lm and videoproductions, primarily in the documentary genre

    Bruce Elliott is a retired Senior Biologist Supervisorwith the California Department of Fish and Game.

    David Epel is the Jane and Marshall Steel ProfessorEmeritus of Marine Sciences at Stanford UniversitysHopkins Marine Station. Hes received numerousawards recognizing his work on toxic chemicals in theenvironment and for fostering undergraduate researchand science education. Known for his lecturing style, MrEpel has also been a visiting professor at universities in

    England, Japan and Italy.

    Pat Hanson, PhD is a veteran college healtheducator, public speaker, writer and hospicevolunteer. She has taught at CSUMB and MPCand is the sexuality columnist for a new magazineCrone: Women Coming of Age.

    David R. Henderson is an Associate Professor oEconomics at the Naval Postgraduate School and aresearch fellow with Stanford Universitys Hoover

    Wayne Martin retired from 35 years of parishministry in Boston, Philadelphia and Lincoln City,Oregon. He served as a hospice chaplain on theMonterey Peninsula. His church work emphasized the

    justice implications of biblical history, and included acommitment to alleviating homelessness and poverty.

    Dustin McKenzie has been involved in archaeologyalong the central coast of California for over 12 years.His research has focused on hunter-gatherer shingpractices and maritime adaptations from MontereyBay to the California Channel Islands. Mr. McKenziehas conducted archaeological investigations in theMojave Desert, the Great Basin, Mexico, Germany,and Australia. He teaches archaeology and culturalanthropology at Cabrillo College.

    Barbara Mossberg, PhD directs and is professor of

    the Integrated Studies Program at CSUMB and is anAdjunct professor for Pacica University.     Gerry Orton brings 17 years of teaching, directingand performing Improv. Following a career as anadministrator of a youth and family counseling agency,he followed his interest in theater, and improvisation. Mr.

    Peter Powles was born in Kenya of British parents. Heattended the University of Cambridge England readinglaw with Degrees M.A. and LLB. Mr. Powles practicedlaw from 1962 to 1998 while living in Australia, the U.S.and India. He retired to England in 1998 and moved toCarmel in 2000.

    John Provost is a philosophy instructor at MontereyPeninsula College and has been studying theinterconnection between philosophical ideas andpopular culture for nearly 30 years.
