The Japanese-Americans who were forcibly interned inthe Topaz War Relocation Center, Utah brought withthem the skills from their interrupted lives. Topaz: Artistsin Internment will show rarely seen artworks created atTopaz during this confinement. The San Leandro HistoryMuseum and Art Gallery is one of two California locationsselected to host this exhibit, on loan from the TopazMuseum. Representative artists include Chiura Obata,Setsu Nagata Kanehara, Charles Erabu Mikami, ThomasRyosaku Matsuoka and Miné Okubo. Refreshments &featuring poet, Lawson Inada. Coming this summer!!!Junior Swim Instructor Program • Do you want to be a swim instructor? Are you between the ages of 12 and 16?Join us and develop your skills and build your confidence while learning what it is like to be a swim instructor. Oneweek training and the opportunity to volunteer at any of the three City pools for a session of swim lessons.

Junior Lifeguarding Program • Participants will undergo a one week training learning Lifeguarding skills includingin-water rescues, CPR w/ AED, and First Aid training. Along with this training, participants will have the opportunityto continue their training by volunteering for a week at the San Leandro Family Aquatic Center during RecreationalSwim hours.

Swim Lesson DescriptionsAquababes • Age: 6 months - 3 yearsSign up for Aquababes and let your child enjoy their first aquatic experience. This class is great for water introductionand parent/child bonding while getting a little physical exercise. Participants will enjoy games as well as water safetylessons. Parents are to accompany their children in the pool. If children are not potty-trained, they must wear leak-proof diapers.

Tiny Tots • Age: 3 - 5 yearsThis class is designed to teach basic water skills, breath holding, floating, jumping in, and more depending upon the child’sswimming interest and ability. Children have a great time learning new skills while building up their confidence in andaround water. Parents do not accompany children into the pool.

Learn to Swim (LTS)-Beginner • Age: 6 - 16 yearsThis class will increase your child’s confidence in water and create a solid swimming foundation. The class emphasizesthe basics, including floating and kicking on both front and back, alternating arm action, rhythmic breathing, combinedstroke on front and back, turning over front to back and back to front, water safety moves, and how to get help in anemergency. This class is for children entering levels 1 or 2 with little or no swimming experience and those with a level1 card or equal skill.

Learn to Swim (LTS) - Intermediate • Age: 6 - 16 yearsThis intermediate-level class teaches the various swim strokes, emphasizing on the fundamentals of front crawl,backstroke, elementary backstroke, deep-water bobbing, introduction to sidestroke and breaststroke, turns at the wall,treading water, self-rescue skills, jumping into deep water with a lifejacket and familiarity with CPR and rescuebreathing. This class is for children entering levels 3 or 4 with a level 2 or 3 card or equal skills.

Learn to Swim (LTS) - AdvancedThis advanced-level class works on techniques and helps your child refine their strokes; front crawl, back crawl,elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Additionally, this class will familiarize your child withmore difficult techniques like alternate breathing, swimming underwater, deep-water bobbing, turns at the wall, divingsafety, alternative kicks for treading water, and the approach stroke. By the end of the course, your child will also knowhow to incorporate learn-to-swim skills and activities into lifetime fitness, various conditioning principles and in-waterrescue techniques. This class is for children entering level 5, 6 or 7 with level 4, 5 or 6 cards or equal skill.

Semi-Private - Beginner • Age: 6 - 16 yearsThis class is for children with little or no swimming experience that need a smaller class environment. This class will increaseyour child’s confidence in water and create a solid swimming foundation. The class emphasizes the basics, includingfloating and kicking on both front and back, alternating arm action, rhythmic breathing, combined stroke on front and back,turning over front to back and back to front, water safety moves, and how to get help in an emergency.

Lesson emphasisis on starts, turns, endurance, concentration, and stroke correction.Prerequisite for beginners: Ability to swim 15-yd. crawl stroke while breathing to the side.Prerequisite for advanced: Ability to swim 25-yd. crawl stroke while breathing to the side. Also must have taken and completedcompetitive swim for beginners.

Exceptional NeedsIndividual swim lessons for elementary school-aged children who are physically or mentally challenged. Parents mustenter the water with the student. This class offers opportunities for parent/child bonding while your child developsnew skills in the water.

Big Read 2012 • Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20 GreatMexican Short StoriesThe Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of Americanculture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperationwith Arts Midwest. The goal of the Big Read, which is the largest reading program in the U.S., is to bring together partnersacross the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.

The San Leandro Public Library, which is fortunate to be the recipient of a second Big Read grant, has selected an anthology ofsome of Mexico’s finest authors titled Sun, Stone and Shadows: 20GreatMexican Short Stories. • Kiddie Kollege strives to provide our registered participantswith a quality program involving close supervision andattention by our staff. For this reason, unpaid siblings willnot be permitted to attend classes.

• Registration and payment are due on the 20th of the monthprior to the start of each session. If the 20th falls on Sundayor a holiday, payment is due the first business day followingthe Sunday or holiday.

San Leandro FLEX Shuttle

The City of San Leandro offerstransportation services for SanLeandro residents age 60years old and over and forpeople with disabilities.

The FLEX Shuttle provides two types of service:

• Shuttle: Allows San Leandro residents who are 60years old or older, or at least 18 years old and EastBay Paratransit certified to access the shuttle fromany of the planned stops within San Leandro.The shuttle operates Monday through Friday from9:00am - 4:00pm and is free.

• Medical Trips: Allows San Leandro residents whoare 75 years or older, or at least 18 years oldand East Bay Paratransit certified to call andmake a reservation for pick up and drop off formedical purposes within Alameda County.Fee is $4 per 10 miles each way. OperatesMonday through Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm.Note: FLEX Shuttle Services do not operate onCity observed holidays.

What is Project Literacy? • Project Literacy provides freetutoring and support for English speaking adults who wantto improve reading and writing skills. Trained volunteers areavailable as tutors for adults age 16 and older who havedifficulty with basic skills. Project Literacy welcomes thefamily by providing monthly story times and free children’sbook distribution at the main library and has a wonderfulcommunity outreach program that provides literacy servicesand resources to parents and their children ages 0 - 4 years.

How can you help? • Be a tutor! Meet with your studentfor only 2 hours a week and you will make a valuabledifference in their life. Lead a weekly small group session,teach a basic computer class, provide office assistance, bean outreach reader to 3-5 year olds.
