This summer, the City will be undertaking a newstreetscape redesign and improvement project inthe Credit Mills community. The existing CreditMills entrance features (pre-cast concrete pillarsand wrought iron fencing), located at the intersec-tion of Erin Mills Parkway and Erin Centre

Boulevard, were installed many years ago andare in need of redesign and improvements. Thenew features and materials are designed to beenvironmentally sustainable, low maintenance, and long-lasting (frost and salt resistant). Theremaining entrance features in the Credit Millscommunity are not scheduled for replacement atthis time.

as planting a variety of perennials and tallgrassesReplacing asphalt between the Erin Mills

Pkwy curb limit and the easterly edge of

    the centre median

    edge of the centre median

Some improvements were completed last year, including adjustments to the centre median curb, concrete curbing, and placement of granular andasphalt material for the road. The historic Streetsville Cenotaph monument, located at the intersectionof Main Street and Queen Street, will receive a much needed redevelop-ment plan thanks to 8-80 Cities Make a Place for Peopleproject. InDecember 2011, the City of Mississauga, with assistance from my office, submitted an application for redevelopment ofthe Cenotaph under the Make a Place forPeopleproject. The project focuses on collabo-rating with communities to create, improve, andtransform community public spaces into dynam-

ic spaces that encourage community participa-tion, civic engagement, physical activity, andsustainable communities.

8-80 Cities received 34 applications from inter-ested communities across Ontario, and only 8successful communities were selected to partic-ipate in this project. The City will be partneringwith the Streetsville Business ImprovementAssociation to facilitate community engagementfor this project. To assist with redeveloping the Cenotaph, 8-80 Cities willprovide the City with $25,000 in services, including the following:

Data collection and analysis, which will be used to form a com-munity vision for the site

Planning and assessment of the existing Cenotaph siteCommunity engagement through workshops, focus groups andplace evaluations/assessmentsAn action plan for the site, including renderings that reflect the

    communitys vision

The Cenotaph has been the centre of manycommunity gatherings and ceremonies for over70 years. The 18-foot Cenotaph was originallyconstructed in 1926, when the StreetsvilleOverseas Veterans Association, under theleadership of Major Rev. Frank Vipond (a localresident who served as a chaplain during theFirst World War), wanted to construct a memo-rial to honour local soldiers who did not returnfrom WWI. The monument was officiallyunveiled on July 1, 1926 and is constructed oflocally made red brick and Credit Valley stone. The Cenotaph now serves as a memorial to

fallen soldiers from subsequent military conflicts, as well as those fromWWI. The Cenotaph site was also once the location of a band shellwhere concerts and fairs were held. Through the Make a Place forPeopleproject, the Cenotaph and Town Square will be transformed into agreat public space for our community.
