I am a sucker for these little “pie-crust” side tables. They are called pie crust tables because the elevated, curved, and pinched edges look exactly like a homemade pie crust! The fluted legs, scalloped top, and triple pedestal base mean lots of room for creativity. You can really make these unique details stand out with paint, so I am always on the lookout for these types of pieces, and can find them pretty regularly.

Returning time and again to this singular, secluded beachfront, Chaize

seeks out its nuances and captures the subtle changes of the landscape

from moment to moment, day to day. Each is taken from what was

essentially the same elevated angle. From a distance, he observes the

variables: light, weather, time of day, the ebb and flow of the ocean, and

the sunbathers, unaware, below his large-format camera. The images

are shot vertically, a departure from the traditional horizontal format

in landscape photography. Carefully, one might even say lovingly, he’s

created a portrait of this seaside place, which unfolds in the pages ahead.

I’ve lived and worked with these images for the past several years, exhibiting

large-scale photographs from the series at my gallery in New York City

and art fairs across the country. We’ve installed larger ones still — their

proportions too outsized to fit into our modest storefront space — in some

of the city’s most glamorous abodes, and seen them published in the pages

of shelter magazines. I’m also proud to say that quite literally hundreds

of thousands of people have had the opportunity to become familiar with

this body of work via our online venture, 20×200.com, with thousands

of those viewers being proud collectors themselves, hanging prints from

this series in their homes at dimensions that range from a modest slice

of paradise all the way up to those aforementioned outsized proportions.

With the publication of this book the series enters into a whole new and

rather fitting dimension, its form being a perfect mimic for the passage of

For nearly a decade now Christian Chaize

and his family have spent their summer holidays

at what Christian has named Praia Piquinia,

a small stretch of coastline in southern Portugal.

And while Christian has certainly accumulated

the requisite shoeboxes (or digital folders)

full of snapshots that one normally associates

with family holidays, he’s also undertaken

a photographic creation of another sort,

documenting the place itself with his antique

8×10 camera.

154. chapter 4: getting it on 155. how to deal with a bad kisser

HOW TO DEAL WITH A BAD KISSER

Too Aggressive

Slow him down.Ask your date to kiss more gently. Say, “Can I show you the way I really like to kiss?” and slowly lean for-ward to offer a demonstration.

Kiss your date.

Draw away from the kiss.Briefly drawing away from the kiss is another way of saying slow down.

Gently hold his face.Your hands can provide a caress, and also prevent him from zooming back in for more.

Tilt his head. While your hands are in place, tilt his head to the angle of greatest comfort. Tilt your head accordingly.

Surround his mouth with gentler kisses.Reinforce the message by sighing and saying, “I love it like this.”

Repeat as necessary.

Be Aware • Very aggressive tongue kissing may be just right

when you are very aroused, but not so great when you are just beginning. Be careful not to scare him away from things you might enjoy later.

Tilt his head to the angle of greatest comfort, then adjust your position accordingly. Use your hands to hold him back or draw him in.

Maddie on ThingsA Super Serious Project about Dogs and Physics • By Theron Humphrey

Maddie is a sweet-tempered coonhound who accompanied her owner, Theron, on a yearlong, cross-country trip while he worked on a photojournalism project. In his spare time, Theron took photos of Maddie doing what she does best: standing on things. From bicycles to giant watermelons to horses to people, there really isn’t anything that Maddie won’t stand on with grace and patience. The poignant Instagram photos of this beautiful dog and her offbeat poses have captured the imagination of all those who long for a road trip with a good dog for company. Maddie on Things celebrates the strange talent of one special dog and will resonate with any dog lover who appreciates the quirky hearts (and extraordinary balance) of canines.

Theron Humphrey is a photographer who has lived and worked across the country, most recently in Idaho. He embarked

on a cross-country trip, meeting and photographing someone new every day as part of a Kickstarter-funded project.

He took his coonhound Maddie on his travels, and also photographed her along the way.

Treme™

Stories and Recipes from the Heart of New Orleans • By Lolis Eric Elie With a Foreword by Anthony Bourdain and Preface by David Simon • Food Photography by Ed Anderson

Inspired by David Simon’s award-winning HBO series Treme, this celebration of the culinary spirit of post-Katrina New Orleans features recipes and tributes from the characters, real and fictional, who highlight the Crescent City’s rich foodways. From chef Janette Desautel’s own Crawfish Ravioli and LaDonna Batiste-Williams’s Smothered Turnip Soup to the city’s finest Sazerac, New Orleans’ cuisine is a mélange of influences from Creole to Vietnamese, at once new and old, genteel and down-home, and, in the words of Toni Bernette, “seasoned with delicious nostalgia.” As visually rich as the series itself, the book includes 100 heritage and contemporary recipes from the city’s heralded restaurants such as Upperline, Bayona, Restaurant August, and Herbsaint, plus original recipes from renowned chefs Eric Ripert, David Chang, and other Treme guest stars. For the 6 million who come to New Orleans each year for its food and music, this is the ultimate homage to the traditions that make it one of the world’s greatest cities.

Lolis Eric Elie is a New Orleans native, the story editor

for the HBO series Treme, co-producer of the documentary

Faubourg Treme, and author of Smokestack Lightning.

Anthony Bourdain is an author, television host, and writer

co-creator of the HBO series The Wire and Treme. He lives

“ Food, music, and New Orleans are all passions about which—it seems to me—all reasonable people of substance should be vocal....This book gives voice to the characters, real and imaginary, whose love and deep attachments to a great but deeply wounded city should be immediately understandable with one bite.”

Tender ButtonsObjects • By Gertrude Stein • Illustrations by Lisa Congdon

First published in 1914, Gertrude Stein’s revolutionary poetic work Tender Buttons is a must-read for every serious lover of literature. Delighting in the rhythm of words, its first section, “Objects,” runs playful linguistic circles around teacups, ribbons, umbrellas, and other quotidian artifacts. Presented here in an exquisite small package, this new edition of “Objects” pairs Stein’s avant-garde verse with colorful con-temporary illustrations by indie art star Lisa Congdon, who illuminates and interrogates the classic Cubist text with visuals as capricious as Stein’s own prose. A celebration of independent thinking old and new, this captivating marriage of image and text is a treasure of arts and letters.

Gertrude Stein, American writer, poet, and art collector, was a

defining figure of Modernism in Paris.

Lisa Congdon is a mixed media artist and illustrator based in

San Francisco.

The Art of Clean UpLife Made Neat and Tidy • By Ursus Wehrli

The modern world can get messy. Fortunately, Swiss artist Ursus Wehrli is a man of obsessive order, as he demonstrates with eye-catching surprise in The Art of Clean Up. Already a bestseller in Germany, this compulsive title has sold more than 100,000 copies in less than a year, and the fastidiously arranged images have garnered blog love from NPR, Brain Pickings, swissmiss, and more. Tapping into the desire for organization and the insanity of über-order, Wehrli humorously categorizes everyday objects and situations by color, size, and shape. He arranges alphabet soup into alphabetical order, sorts the night sky by star size, and aligns sunbathers’ accoutrements—all captured in bright photographs sure to astonish even the pickiest of neat freaks.

Ursus Wehrli is an award-winning comedian, live performer,

But I Wanted a Pony!An Anne Taintor Motherhood Collection • By Anne Taintor

This new collection of vintage-with-a-twist work by Anne Taintor offers up a fresh serving of Anne’s signature hilarious commentary on the joys, challenges, and cocktail hours of motherhood. From the fundamentals (WOW! I get to give birth AND change diapers! ) to putting food on the table (you see them as pies . . . I see them as cries for help) to dealing with childhood questions (because I’m the mother . . . that’s why) and strategies for taking the edge off (now be a dear and fetch mommy her flask ), Taintor expertly captures the funny, frantic, and honest thoughts that most moms have experienced, with an attitude mothers everywhere will welcome.

A Bike Snob AbroadStrange Customs, Incredible Fiets, and the Quest for Cycling Paradise • By BikeSnobNYC

In his new book, BikeSnobNYC reaches the final frontier of cycling: riding with the family. As his choice to take to the road with his toddler son in tow is met with bewilderment and disapproval from onlookers and the occasional motorist, he ponders why it’s such a taboo. And what does it really mean to be a bike-friendly country? Seeking answers, he heads from the U.S. to London, Amsterdam, Gothenburg, and San Vito dei Normanni in search of an alternative. With humorous anecdotes and his trademark biting wit and wisdom, BikeSnobNYC takes us on his most personal narrative journey yet, and ultimately shines a light on the growing pains that exist in any culture that asks smartphone-obsessed text-happy pedestrians, the two-wheeled, and the four-wheeled to share the road.

BikeSnobNYC (a.k.a. Eben Weiss) is the blogger behind

Beer Makes Daddy StrongBy Andy Riley

Fatherhood is full of ups and downs, quirks and crises. But there is always humor to be found! Featuring 60 all-new cartoons from Andy Riley, Beer Makes Daddy Strong shows the world just how great dads can be: Daddy knows all the best car games (“Who can stay quiet the longest?”), likes to show off his scars (that he may or may not have obtained while running with the bulls in Spain), and is a great cook (when Spaghetti Bolognese is on the menu). Witty and wise, this affectionate tribute is a celebration of fatherhood and all of its joys, confusion, humor, and, of course, beer.

A Sky Full of KindnessBy Rob Ryan

Rob Ryan’s papercut prose is so exquisitely intricate, it begs closer examination— and always captures a lingering eye. The story Ryan tells in this jacketed hardcover is a celebration of love and family just as heartfelt as it is visually arresting: two songbirds eagerly anticipate the arrival of their first child, and as they tend to their nest, they can’t help but worry about becoming parents. It’s the generosity and support of their avian friends and neighbors that confirms the world awaiting their unborn chick is indeed full of kindness. Brimming with poetic verse, each page is a work of art that will charm new parents and longtime fans of Ryan’s evocative imagery.

Rob Ryan is known as the “Prince of Papercuts.” He is the

Dog lovers who haven’t raised puppies from birth have missed out on one of the most remarkable and adorable times in a dog’s life. From one to twenty-one days old, puppies undergo great changes, from needing their mothers’ complete care to opening their eyes and ears to the outside world, growing, stretching their legs, and learning to become the dogs that they are. Author/photographer (and new mother) Traer Scott’s love of dogs shines through these intimate images of a range of breeds and types, from champion pups to shelter strays, all of them irresistible. Including an introduction on puppies’ development and the importance of their welfare, this delightful book reveals young dogs as they embark on the adventures of growing up.

Line 135By Germano Zullo • Illustrated by Albertine

Journeys can be life-changing, whether they are literal—traveling from one place to another—or personal, like the quest for self-discovery. This meditative picture book explores both, following a young child on a train ride from the city to the country. As the landscape transforms from a bustling city to a richly imaginative world in this distinctively formatted book, the child’s sense of wonder and indepen-dence flourishes, as does a deep engagement with life and the possibilities that lie ahead—making Line 135 a quietly eloquent gift for anyone embarking on their life's journey.

Germano Zullo is an author and poet who lives in Geneva,

Switzerland.

Albertine has contributed illustrations to numerous books.

She teaches at the school of Visual Arts in Geneva.

Get rid of a pesky hanger-on in Brazil by telling him to dig for potatoes—vai ceifar batatas. To express disgust toward your brown-nosing German friend, accuse him of being a bicycle-rider—radfahrer, or tell someone off in Laos by letting him know you think his mother enjoys keeping intimate company with dogs—Ma see mea mung! Make new friends and enemies abroad with this handy guide filled with fighting words, scatological expressions, dozens of ways to insult someone’s mother, and many other suitably offensive phrases.

“Modern Sauces is my favorite book this year. It is destined to be a classic reference for the rest of my cooking life, on one of the most valuable but least understood facets of cooking: sauces. Martha Holmberg brings great intelligence and lucid writing and instructions to the important craft of sauces. She is both respectful of and illuminating about classic sauces, innovative in her thinking about contemporary sauces, and practical in terms of everyday cooking. This is a great book.”

Flower

Andrew Zuckerman’s Flower is predicated on contemporizing the well-mined terrain of botanical imagery. Culled from an investigation of over 300 species, Zuckerman aims, as always, to translate the essential nature of his subjects and unearth qualities that have previously escaped scrutiny.

In the blank field of pure white light, each flower exists on its ownterms. Every aspect is made explicit. What one notices immediatelyare the astonishing gradations of color and variations of form, followed by boundless textural nuance. The effect of this precisionis at once taxonomically specific and startlingly lovely.

The images contained within transcend still life. These are flowersin a distinct time and place, responding to the pull of light, gravity, and water. At close range, they reveal a kind of topography forsurvival, exposing the structural motivations—vascular, respiratory, reproductive—for such arresting physical beauty.

Andrew Zuckerman

Noted filmmaker and photographer, Andrew Zuckerman, utilizesa multitude of platforms to produce work that is systematicallyexecuted, conceptually based, and democratically presented.Minimalist in nature, Zuckerman aims to create atmospheres of clarity and neutrality to facilitate the viewer’s access to thematerial. “In this vividly illustrated encyclopedia of, and paean to, everything from Andean tubers to wasabi, Diane Morgan makes a strong case for the delightful possibilities of this vastly underrated class of vegetables. Her lore is fascinating and her passion for her subject is nothing less than inspiring.” —COLMAN ANDREWS, editorial director of TheDailyMeal.com and author of The Country Cooking of Italy

“Diane Morgan has done the impossible. She has transformed the subject of root vegetables into an extraordinary reference book and brought them deliciously to life with irresistible recipes. This is a must for any cook who wants to expand their culinary horizons and navigate the fascinating world of root vegetables with confidence.” —GRACE YOUNG, author of Stir-Frying to the Sky’s Edge

“Diane Morgan’s latest book illuminates the culinary underworld in the most marvel-ous way, allowing roots, rhizomes, tubers, and corms to bask in the limelight. Diane’s kitchen prowess elevates lowly root vegetables to (well-deserved) exalted menu status. While lotus root, tubers, and yams are staples in my own Japanese kitchen, mostly for savory dishes, thanks to Diane, I discovered the sweet wonders of Lotus Root Upside-Down Cake and the piquant pleasures of purple potatoes with smoked trout. Kansha: appreciation, in equal measure for nature’s hidden underground treasures... and for Diane’s insatiable curiosity and literary diligence that created this tasty tribute to the edible underworld.”—ELIZABETH ANDOH, author of KIBŌ (“Brimming with Hope”): Recipes & Stories from Japan’s Tohoku

“Diane throws open the doors of the root cellar and shines a strong beam of light on this subterranean wonderland. From burdock and beets to rutabagas and radishes (and beyond), she works through this often overlooked realm with inspired recipes and illuminating reference material. The word that keeps coming to mind: finally!— a book that helps me understand the real potential of these culinary outliers.”—HEIDI SWANSON, author of Super Natural Every Day and 101Cookbooks.com

Jacket design by Sarah PulverManufactured in Chinawww.chroniclebooks.com

For anyone who ever picked up a strangely shaped, gnarly looking vegetable at the farmers’ market (in the author’s case, burdock root) and said “what’s this?” Roots is your go-to guide to the veggies found underground.

This comprehensive cookbook reveals the underworld of roots, from the familiar (beets, carrots, potatoes) to the unfamiliar ( jicama, salsify, yuca) to the practically unheard of (cassava, galangal, crosne). Discover the fascinating history and lore of each one, their nutritional content, how to buy and store them, and—the best part—more than 225 recipes that bring out their best flavors.

Start simply with easy-to-prepare Ginger Rhubarb Chutney. Save it in pretty glass containers and this tangy-spicy sauce makes a great gift (or eat it yourself straight from the jar!). Explore more unusual varieties like burdock, a long, thin root with a mild flavor and pleasing crunch that makes it ideal for pickling and stir-fries. Didn’t know turmeric was a root? Used mostly in Asian cooking, turmeric is best known for its beautiful golden color and its welcome presence in dishes like Chiang Mai Curry Noodles. And don’t forget the well-loved stand-bys like potatoes and carrots that make flavorful hearty stews and quick weeknight meals.

Whether you bring home your new-found roots from the grocery store or your local famers’ market, these delicious, nutritious, and easy-on–the-wallet veggies will add a new level of taste and sophistication to your everyday cooking.

90 recipes for the ultimate comfort food

“This is Polish food for the modern palate: All the flavors you would expect—sour pickles, tart beets, flavorsome game, bittersweet poppy seed—but lighter, fresher, and easier than ever before.”

—nigella lawson

Anne Applebaum’s family bought Dwor Chobielin, a falling-down

Polish manor house, in 1989, as Communism was dismantled. The

house had been confiscated, abandoned, and neglected, and they

set about rebuilding it. In making her home there, Anne had to

cook with ingredients that were local, fresh, and available, and

learned how to make food that was, if not exactly traditional, in

the Polish spirit. “And thus,” she says, “without really thinking

about it, I learned how to cook.”

And so will you, following these 90 recipes for simplified Polish

classics, some familiar—pierogi and cabbage rolls—and perhaps

some less so—wild mushroom soup or venison stew. The national

rebirth of Poland in the last two decades has meant the rebirth

of its cuisine, and Anne and fellow journalist Danielle Crittenden—

friend and fellow home cook—have accordingly modernized many

of its dishes, without losing any of the centuries-old flavors.

Dishes such as Braised Cabbage with Wine and Nutmeg, Pierogi

with Wild Mushrooms and Sauerkraut Filling, and Orange-Saffron

Rum Cake—all deeply grounded in their history and landscape—

evoke the tastes and smells of the Polish countryside, a place that

some of us are from, and that, after this book, many more of us

will want to visit.

Author Diane Phillips unveils a new compendium of

minimal-effort, maximum-deliciousness slow-cooker

recipes—with a Mediterranean twist.

Representing Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece,

and the North African and Middle Eastern coasts,

these recipes make up an array of menus as diverse

as the terrain they cover. Many Mediterranean dishes

traditionally rely on slow-cooked methods to bring

out the best of their ingredients, so the dishes here

are authentic and flavor-packed.

And the best part—any home cook with an electric

slow-cooker can create these tastes with ease. Get it

going in the morning and return hours later to a per-

fectly cooked dinner. With new and traditional dishes

like Greek Pastitsio, Creamy French Onion Soup, and

Moroccan-Style Beef seasoned with cumin, saffron,

and sweet paprika, you’ll have a whole new repertoire

of exciting slow-cooked meals at your fingertips.

Stock your pantry with such simple ingredients as

canned tomatoes, dried beans, dried fruits, spices, and

cured meats and you’ll have the makings for meals

that will whisk you away to warm breezes and sunny

skies—without leaving your kitchen.

Vader’s™ Little PrincessBy Jeffrey Brown

In this irresistibly funny follow-up to the breakout bestseller Darth Vader™ and Son, Vader—Sith Lord and leader of the Galactic Empire—now faces the trials, joys, and mood swings of raising his daughter Leia as she grows from a sweet little girl into a rebellious teenager. Smart and funny illustrations by artist Jeffrey Brown give classic Star Wars® moments a twist by bringing these iconic family relations together under one roof. From tea parties to teaching Leia how to fly a TIE fighter, regulating the time she spends talking with friends via R2-D2’s hologram, and making sure Leia doesn’t leave the house wearing only the a skirted metal bikini, Vader’s parenting skills are put hilariously to the test.

Jeffrey Brown is the author of numerous graphic novels and

comics, including Cat Getting Out of a Bag, Cats are Weird,

and Darth Vader™ and Son. A lifelong Star Wars fan, he

lives in Chicago with his wife and six-year-old son.
