Vulcraft & Verco Teammates Collaborate and Design at the Nucor Detailing CenterAs the nation’s leading producer of steel joists and steel deck, the Vulcraft/Verco Group of Nucor Corporation knows that to remain on top you have to be innovative and focus on continual improvement. Since February 2009, a group of Nucor’s talented teammates have been working from the custom-built Nucor Detailing Center (NDC) in Norfolk, Nebraska. Not only are many great minds in one place, they are working in a setting specifically designed to shorten detailing times, improve detailing quality and decrease detailing costs. The success of this environment is emphasized by the continued addition of other Nucor divisions utilizing the detailing center for their detailing needs.

NDC was the idea of Nucor Executive Vice President Ham Lott. NDC’s location was chosen in part because of the success of three local Nucor divisions, support from the surrounding community, and the availability of a talented future workforce.

“Our team members are what make this company successful. Giving them a space to be creative, learn from each other and collaborate seemed like the perfect investment,” said Lott.

Getting things right the first time is something Vulcraft/Verco practices every day. This is evident in the way NDC sets up a team of four detailers in a pod, an area of desks with open space in between, to encourage collaboration. These areas feature multiple windows and lots of natural light. The result of this environment is exactly what we had hoped for – shortened times, improved quality and decreased costs – all things that help us to “Take Care of Our Customers”, a Nucor priority. In fact, we refer to our detailers throughout the company as part of our “Repeat Sales Team”, where every teammate and our collective performance are responsible for selling the next project and building long-term customer loyalty.

The structure and workplace environment is so impressive that it is a valuable education and recruiting tool for the Nucor Detailing Center. The building details were intended to showcase Nucor and Vulcraft/Verco products. Students from local colleges and high schools frequent the location on a regular basis to further comprehend real world detailing and learn from experienced professionals.

Vulcraft/Verco

“Working at the Detailing Center gives recent graduates a great foundation,” notes Morrow. “They have the chance to become not only well-versed detailers and drafters, but to immerse themselves in the Nucor culture and learn how to work as a team. Most will work for NDC or another Nucor division for the remainder of their careers.”

NDC is constantly improving customized detailing software. Vulcraft/Verco has been using 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) since 2009, quickly gaining traction and customer approval. Complicated 2D drawings are being replaced with 3D versions of steel joists and deck, designed by Vulcraft/Verco to represent the “as built” product that will be delivered to job sites.

The Vulcraft/Verco Group continues to set the pace for industry standards by providing its valued team members with the top resources available, such as a facility like the Nucor Detailing Center.

Fisher & Ludlow Teams Up in CanadaFisher & Ludlow is not new to the trade show scene, but they hit a first in Canada with a joint presentation at this year’s 2014 Construct Canada. The annual Construct Canada conference was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on December 3-5, 2014 concurrent with PM Expo, HomeBuilder, Renovator Expo, Concrete Canada and IIDEXCanada. These shows combined created The Buildings Show, Canada’s largest exposition, networking and educational event. Influential buyers and decision-makers of the design, construction and real estate industries attended the show to experience more than 1,600 exhibits and 350 seminars and demonstrations, delivering the very latest in products, technologies, best practices and applications.

Fisher & Ludlow partnered with Vulcraft and American Buildings Company at the trade show, displaying products and services offered in their industries. Fisher & Ludlow found this first joint show to be a success. Many architects, consultants/engineers and structural companies were present. It presented an opportunity not only for Fisher & Ludlow, but part of the newly created 1NUCOR Canada Network to be known in the Canadian construction industry. New contacts, leads, feedback, networking and even orders were positive outcomes from the joint venture. Construct Canada allowed the Nucor group to see the mutual customer base we are currently dealing with and most importantly, the ones we are not.

Present as main exhibitors were Bill Zawydiwski (F&L), Suresh Jacob (NPG), Adam Scott (ABCVA) and Wes Brooker (ABCAL). Many others from the group also made appearances both within Canada and the United States in supporting the joint trade show booth and are all recognized for their travels and contributions.

Already a well-known and established name in the construction industry, Fisher & Ludlow is looking towards the future and working together with the 1NUCOR Canada group of companies. Fisher & Ludlow is optimistic in reputation and market share growth with future customers and projects, expanding the 1NUCOR Canada name, services and products throughout the growing Canadian construction industry.

Harris Rebar is Rising High in MiamiMiami is on the move again, and with it so is Nucor – as one! Over the past year, Harris Rebar and Harris Davis Rebar booked two landmark projects that will bless the skyline of Miami for years to come. Biscayne Beach Club Condo and The Bond Condo projects are both underway and combined will utilize in excess of 10,000 tons of rebar.

Servicing these projects requires a full complement of Nucor entities: Nucor Birmingham Mill and its Florida Depots will supply multiple grades and sizes of rebar, Harris Rebar Nufab LLC will detail, schedule, fabricate and deliver the rebar to the jobsites, and finally Harris Davis Rebar, as the Harris on-site subcontractor, will install the final product. This provides our Nucor customers a “ready to pour concrete” rebar service.

This 1NUCOR approach allowed the Harris Rebar team to be successful securing this work in a very competitive market. Both of the clients involved, South Pointe Construction and Baker Concrete, were convinced of the added value in combining our services, a one stop shop of rebar supply and install. By having a collaborative approach between the two, we can bring on-site problems to a resolution quickly and with minimal cost impact or schedule disruption to the customer and the owner.

Biscayne Beach Condo (pg. 8) is a 51 story high rise condo and parking garage located in Miami’s East Edgewater neighborhood. Its construction began in the third quarter of 2014 and it’s slated to be complete in 2016.

The Bond (pg. 9) began on-site activities in the second quarter of 2014 and is scheduled to top out in the third quarter of 2015. It is a 44 story condominium building with a parking garage and some retail space incorporated.

Both of these projects reflect the growing strength of the Florida market in general and the impact 1NUCOR can have on it! The sunshine state is getting hot!

NBS Helps Historic Forge Rise From the AshesWendell August Forge is America’s oldest and largest forge, producing hand-wrought ornamental metalware and elegant giftware in aluminum and other metals since 1923. In March 2010, days after celebrating the acquisition of two of the largest product orders in its 90-year history, the company was in mourning. Its Grove City flagship location, which included manufacturing, corporate offices and retail was completely ravaged by fire.

Wanting to rise from the ashes as quickly as possible, Wendell August engaged Wesex Corporation, an Authorized Nucor Builder, as the Design-Build Developer to construct a facility that employees, the community and visitors alike would once again embrace as a destination. The $8 million project included $5.75 million for the design and construction of a comprehensive 60,000 square foot facility.

Rising to the ChallengeOver the year following the fire, Wendell August made due in temporary space while receiving proposals from architects, general contractors and developers for a new facility. Due to a “funding-gap” from the under-insured loss, Wesex Corporation stepped in to assist with the procurement of a $4,000,000 grant for the project. In December 2011, the Wendell August team focus was quickly directed from operations to the construction of a new facility due to insurance and potential tax consequences if the facility was not substantially complete by December 31, 2013.

Wesex Corporation utilized an entirely integrated approach for this project, challenging traditional delivery methods by accepting responsibility for every facet of the project, thereby ensuring its success. The scope of work consisted of the design and construction of a 60,000 square foot manufacturing, warehouse, flagship retail store and corporate office facility located on a 12-acre parcel of land in Springfield Township, PA.

After selecting the site on farmland located within a mile of Interstate 79 in Grove City, PA with no road access or utilities, Wesex navigated all land and real estate development requirements on behalf of Wendell August. The inherent challenges of developing an industrial park in three months were daunting coupled with the requirements for utility approval for off-site systems that were near capacity.

BIM Keeps the Project on TrackBuilding Information Modeling was implemented into the project at the schematic design phase and the working model was utilized though construction drawings. The integration of BIM assisted in clash detection, budgeting, constructibility and scheduling. BIM models were shared across the design and construction team from day one through the construction documents and final close-out phases. The BIM model was also utilized for foundation integration and excavation based on OSHA requirements.

2015 SPRING ISSUE | VOLUME 4 NUCOR STEEL PRODUCTS NEWS 11

A Design Honoring the PastHonoring the rich history of Wendell August was a priority to the Owner. The original facility lost in the fire had been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996 and preserving the glory of the iconic company was essential. The design intent was to preserve the company’s vintage look with a “Rural-Americana” flair that included attractive woodwork and natural, rustic materials throughout the new space.

A Nucor Buildings System pre-engineered metal building was selected as the ideal design solution for the project providing the most versatile and economical option. An immense amount of coordination between Wesex, Nucor Building Systems, and the architects using BIM was necessary to ensure every detail was accounted for. The result was a customized, contiguous pre-engineered facility featuring a 160’ x 80’ single slope structure housing the retail space connected to a 180’ x 226’ structure with stone piers, white Nucor Classic Wall Panel™, and a 226’ Architectural sign band on the exterior of the manufacturing area. The exterior of the retail area features cement lap-siding and trim, three dormers to let in an abundance of natural light, and a decorative metal sign tower. The facility also used Nucor ClearBay® roof joist system and a Nucor composite CFR Standing Seam Roof System™.

On the interior of the space, the retail area introduces thin-brick and rough cut lumber along the walls, exposed duct work and features that remind the visitor of a rustic barn. The office space reflects a more modern atmosphere with stained concrete, exposed spiral duct work, and large breakout areas for teamwork – all fostering a creative and collaborative environment. The use of alternate materials throughout the retail and office spaces saved roughly $1 million dollars.

After 8 months of construction, Wendell August’s new, modern 60,000 square foot facility was occupied in late October 2013, just in time for the Holiday rush. The new structure houses every component of the business: corporate office headquarters, retail flagship store, manufacturing facility, as well as warehouse and distribution functions. The project was completed on time, and on-budget, thanks to the utilization of BIM throughout the collaboration process.

In late 2014 Wesex Corporation, along with project team members including: Desmone Architects, Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc., and Nucor Building Systems, was presented with The National Award of Excellence for Commercial/Office Buildings from the Design-Build Institute of America for the Wendell August building.

ABC Brings Innovative Design to New ChurchS & B James Construction, an American Buildings Company (ABC) Authorized Builder brought new life to the scenic farmland and orchards of Central Point, Oregon with the Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church. The new and improved church, located in Central Point, Oregon replaces a small fruit stand that was originally converted into a church many years ago.

The 15,000-square-foot church includes seating within the main chapel for 590 parishioners, a day chapel which seats 60, sacristy, storage areas and various meeting rooms. To create the intricate design of the church at minimal cost, a pre-engineered steel building was divided into five different steel building structures with varying heights. The church features a “bell tower” element, a heavy timber entry canopy, traditional horizontal siding and trim, a metal roof of dark bronze roof panels, craftsman light fixtures, a stone veneer base and gracious eaves with a painted board and bead wood finish.

The use of metal on the project helped the builders create the column free high ceiling in the main chapel. It uses natural daylighting from high clerestory windows and high-efficiency windows and LED lighting to reduce the use of electricity. Additionally, the energy efficient building is zoned to allow the HVAC system to run only in areas that are occupied while equipment serving other unoccupied zones can be turned off.

The varying heights, decorative heavy-timber wood tresses and gypsum board ceilings suspended from the steel roof kept the building consistent with the local architecture. Together, the combination of high windows, decorative woodwork, heavy timber trusses and pendant lighting make the church a warm and inviting space.

For their work on the project, S & B James Construction was recently awarded first place in the 2014 ABC Excellence in Design Awards in the Church/Religious category. The ABC Excellence in Design Awards recognizes Builders and Roofers for their innovation in design and metal systems construction.

Gulf States Brightens the Season for Local FamiliesSanta’s Elves were surely busy this season with all the gifts Gulf States was able to provide for local youth and families. The team at Gulf States Manufacturers pulled together to raise over $1500 in cash donations through a series of fun office fundraising events. The team first held a raffle for a fire pit. Each department took turns with the Christmas Chow Down where teammates brought in different foods and treats each day providing breakfast and lunch throughout the week. All proceeds went to fulfilling the Christmas wish list for two local Habitat for Humanity families, as well as providing backpacks, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves for children at the Sally Kate Winters Home, and the Palmer Home for Children. The team also held a coat drive for teammates to donate some of their gently used coats to the Sally Kate Winters Home.

Gulf States did not stop at cash donations. The team also decided to sponsor an Angel Tree for the Salvation Army. The Gulf States Angel Tree consisted of thirteen area youths ranging in age from infants to preteens. Gulf States team members provided all of the items in the above photo. Angel Tree donations consisted of toys, games, clothing, stuffed animals, and bicycles. “We are so grateful for the giving spirit of our teammates. To see teammates going out of their way to make someone else’s Christmas brighter is truly inspiring,” said Sales and Marketing Administrator DoNae Reggans.

Kirby Teammate Goes the Extra Mile for St. Jude Children’s Research HospitalSt. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a not-for-profit organization recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Patient families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing and food, because the only thing a family should worry about is helping their child live. With operating costs surpassing $2 million each day, St. Jude relies on funds collected during a number of charity events held throughout the year.

The 13th annual St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend was held on December 6, 2014. This was the single largest fundraising event of the year, raising $7.5 million. Over 18,000 people registered for the event. More than 60 percent of participants traveled from outside the Memphis area, with many forming teams and registering as St. Jude Heroes to raise awareness and funds. Since the event’s inception in 2002, the St. Jude Heroes program has raised more than $40 million for the kids of St. Jude.

Among the participants this year was Kirby teammate and St. Jude Hero Mike Wade, and his son, Brad. Together these Heroes raised over $600 for the kids of St. Jude, utilizing the organization’s website and social media. This was Mike’s seventh half marathon, and Brad’s first full marathon.

“One of the great things about the Memphis St. Jude Marathon is part of the race runs directly through the St. Jude campus,” said Mike, recalling the day of the event. “As I was making my way through St. Jude I spotted a young boy standing with his family. It was chilly, in the 40’s. He was bundled up with a blanket and wool cap. As I got closer, I noticed he also had his IV pole at his side and it was apparent he was probably in the middle of treatments.”

The sight of the young patient reminded Mike why he’s a St. Jude Hero, and made him thankful for his own healthy children. “As long as I am able, I will run the St. Jude Marathon,” he said.

Nucor Alabama Divisions Donate More Than $60,000 to Children’s of Alabama Beads of Courage® All Alabama divisions of Nucor Corporation recently participated in Nucor’s annual golf tournament to raise money for The Beads of Courage® program at Children’s of Alabama. Nucor companies in Alabama include American Buildings Company (ABC), Nucor Steel Birmingham, Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa, Nucor Steel Decatur, and Vulcraft. More than $60,000 was raised for the Beads of Courage Program.

Since 2007, more than $1.71 million has been raised by Nucor employees to support Children’s of Alabama. Nucor Alabama is the hospital’s largest corporate event donor.

“Through the Beads of Courage program, children tell their unique stories using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that they receive to honor and acknowledge each step of their treatment journey,” said Mindy Wald at Children’s of Alabama. “We look forward to sharing and expanding this life-changing program with Nucor.”

To promote donations each company incorporates an element of competition to see which can raise the most money. Nucor Tuscaloosa won this year’s tournament with ABC finishing third. Overall the challenge and golf tournament raised over $325,000. Participants agree that Children’s is the real winner.

“These children can benefit so much from something as simple as a colorful beaded necklace, so we are delighted to provide support any way we can,” said Ron Kuenkler of ABC. “We encourage our employees to give back – personal donations, gathering teams for group donations, asking friends and family – every little bit is necessary.”

Children’s of Alabama is visited more than 600,000 times each year by children needing specialized medical care.
