RINGSThe

Ancient Egyptians believed that a circular ring was a sign of undying never ending love, a love without a beginning or an end.

Today, almost every bride wears a wedding ring and it is now becoming increasingly popular for grooms to recieve a ring as well during their vows. The choice of wedding ring styles is virtually

limitless; you may want to visit several jewellers before making your final decision.

Engagement Ring

If a bride is wearing an engagement ring, the choice of wedding ring must

centre around that ring. There may be a ready made match available although in some instances the

bride's wedding ring may have to be custom made to ensure a super fit

with her engagement ring.

Groom's Ring

Many couples think in terms of matching wedding rings, but if the bride's wedding ring is to

complement her engagement ring then in some cases the groom will have to pick a different style to his bride, which pleases him and suits

his hand.

The Fit

Ensure you achieve the correct fit as day in, day out, year after year no other piece of apparel can compete

with the hours you wear your wedding ring.

Rings are available in yellow or white gold; 9ct., 18ct., 22ct., and platinum, they can be traditional or modern, wide or narrow, incorporating diamonds or

coloured stone detailing and personalised engraving... The choice is yours!

The

DRESS

TheWeddingGuide.co.uk

All eyes on youOnce the initial excitement of your

wedding is over, one of the first things you will probably picture when

dreaming of your big day is your wedding dress.

Your dress is one of the most important wedding items that you will purchase and on the day all eyes will be on you and your gown. Make sure you take enough time to choose one that really suits you and gives you that perfect shape so you can look and feel wonderful on your special day. Remember that you will be standing, walking and dancing throughout the day and evening so your dress should not only look fabulous but should also feel comfortable. With so many choices for your dress, it can be an overwhelming task, but remember that shopping for the dress of your dreams should be fun, easy and painless.

BODY SHAPE - BE HONEST

Before you start, think about what type of dress you are looking for. Wedding dresses are made in several different silhouettes such as the ball gown, empire line, fishtail and ballerina style to name a few. It is important that you know which type of gown will flatter your figure the best. Look at your body shape and be honest with yourself. Consider the features you want to show off and those you want to hide.

Looking great on your wedding day means being radiant and relaxed, how you look and feel in your dress is a key element to this. This is a very special time in your life when you get the chance to try on as many exquisite gowns as you want to. You will be the centre of attention so relax, enjoy the whole experience and most of all, have fun!

THE OUTFIT

The day ahead will be full of excitement and sheer exhilaration, not forgetting a few tears of joy along the way. Before you start looking for your outfit, both mothers must discuss with the bride suitable colour schemes. After all you are part of the bridal party and it would be nice for the photographs if you all tone in with the general colour scheme of the bridesmaids and gentlemen members of the party.

HATS, SHOES AND HANDBAGS

You may decide to go for the subtle sophistication of a smart tailored suit with a twist of glamour added by beading or lace details to the jacket, or the sheer elegance of a flowing dress made out of floaty chiffon or splendid crepe, accessorised with a neck scarf.

Hats, shoes and handbags should all be picked to compliment your outfit, and work in harmony with it, along with any jewellery you have chosen to wear.

STYLE THAT SUITS

Remember it is better to wear the style that suits you rather than what you think others expect you to wear! There are a wide range of boutique shops, who specialise in dressing the mother of the bride so it is well worth your time visiting them and trying their sample items. They will give you help and advice. Purchasing your outfit should be enjoyable and not a chore.

What better excuse does a mother need, than to buy a fantastic new outfit for her son or daughter's wedding?

Your

GROOM

TheWeddingGuide.co.uk

Be complimentary

Once the bride has decided on her colour, theme and style of dress it is time for the groom to decide on his

attire.

In today's modern world, there is now a wide choice of outfits for the groom and his male attendants: the traditional style of a morning suit, the timeless elegance of the frock coat or the Prince Edward jacket, the contemporary nehru jacket or the less formal, but very smart lounge suit.

It is a good idea to echo your bridemaid's colours in the ties, cravats or waistcoats of the male attendants. For those finishing touches wear a double cuff sleeve with cufflinks and ensure your shoes are shiny.

You can hire any of the above outfits from a variety of menswear shops. It is always an advantage to order and have your fitting for your hire clothes at least 3 months before the wedding.

The three favourites: traditional morning suit, timeless frock coat,

less formal lounge suit.

TOP HAT AND TAILS

If the groom decides to wear top hat and tails then all other male members of the bridal party must follow suit. Morning suit is usually available in black, grey and navy blue, accompanied with striped trousers and the look is completed with a waistcoat, cravat, top hat and a pair of grey gloves. Frock coats and the short style of the Prince Edward jacket are available in a wider range of colours than morning suits.

NEHRU JACKETS

Nehru Jackets are becoming increasingly popular, available in fabrics such as silk, rich velvet, and brocade, with either black or matching trousers. Finally the lounge suit, which can be accessorised with a fashionable tie to create an exquisite, unique look.

LOOKING WELL GROOMED WITH

A Groom's Diary

One of the most popular tasks in the early stage of planning is finding a suit

or tux for a wedding. Midnight’s team have been dressing grooms for many years now. With 20 years of experience on Savile Row in men’s tailoring, we share our experience with grooms at this time. We will give you tips on when to start looking for your outfit and explanations why some men are delaying the purchase.

Ideally, the groom starts looking for his wedding attire usually a year in advance. You should come early, to get ideas about what’s out there ready-made or opt for a more personalised look with made-to-measure. It is worth keeping in mind that after the garments are made, you should keep a couple of weeks for the alterations. Couples are particularly busy prior to the wedding with other arrangements.

Bearing in mind that March and April are the busiest times, so if you are looking to buy for late spring and summer weddings remember to save time for fittings. At the beginning of May, we usually meet people, who thought they had time left to decide on their wedding wear. However, time is now limited, and decisions must be made. People who visit us mid-May are still able to get away with not much pressure, but the fittings after the garments are made must be done very quickly.

brings the Savile Row experience to you in Essex from their shop in Brentwood

The challenging time comes at the end of May when we meet people who either thought they can find any colour ready made, or were genuinely too busy to look for suits, or even perhaps just decided to get married a few days ago. We can manufacture in 3 weeks, but it is really not advisable.

The last stage is when someone visits and needs a suit a week before their wedding. We have had quite a few cases like this. The situation they are in is similar to when you try to cross the street after the traffic light has stopped the count down and there is this brief moment when you can still cross the road without getting run over. In other words, yes - it is possible to make a suit in about a week and no - it is not advisable to leave it so late.

The ultimate question is why do men delay wedding wear shopping? Not all of us wear suits and some of us never. Even if we wear suits for work, there is still so many details to think about. Starting from the right shade of colour, the style, the fit. On top of this we have a shirt and tie to worry about. Finishing with the smallest details like cufflinks. However, once you step into our store, you come into our hands which have prepared hundreds of men for their weddings. We have dealt with a vast range of customers starting from the modest and ending with the flamboyant. So, there you go - you have no more reasons to delay, come and visit us because you do not have to decide everything on your own.

The

VENUE

TheWeddingGuide.co.uk

You may already have a dream wedding location in mind or you may be starting with a blank page. Either way,

choosing your wedding venue is one of the first and most important decisions you will make.

CHURCH OR CIVIL

There are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise, the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. You may have your heart set on a traditional church ceremony, which is still a favourite choice for couples. If this is the case then the reception should be planned around the church's location. You will need to consider ease of transport for your guests from the ceremony to the reception venue. The second option is a civil wedding where your ceremony and reception will be held at a licensed venue.

FEEL FACTOR

When you have decided on a Church or Civil Ceremony, there are certain factors to consider. Firstly, the venue must look and feel right to you. You may have a particular style of venue in mind for example, a Castle, a Manor House or somewhere dramatic or chic. The choices are endless and where

you choose will help you dictate the style and theme of your wedding.

SIZE AND LOCATION

The venue must be able to accommodate the number of guests you are inviting so you should have a good idea of numbers before you start looking around.Importantly the cost of the venue must suit your budget. Castles, country houses and stately homes are among the locations many dream of for their big day but consider your budget carefully.Properly planned, your reception will become one of the most joyous parties you will ever host, so remember to savour every minute and enjoy it!

VENUE SUMMARY

TheWeddingGuide.co.uk

Wedding

Traditions are kept alive in the belief that they will bring good luck and happiness to the couple when their lives are changing.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW...

The poem about bridal attire: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" is familiar to everyone. What is not so widely known are the origins wherein a bride borrowed an item from a happily married woman because the giver's happiness was said to be passed on to the bride. Blue is considered to bring constancy to the relationship.

GARTERSThe bridal garter originates from at least two different cultures. In days of old, when knights were bold, the groom removed the virginal girdle from his bride on their wedding night. The Old English custom of "Flinging the Stocking" is thought to be another possible origin; maiden wedding guests would sneak into the bridal chamber, pick up the bride's discarded stockings (and presumably the garters that held them up), and throw them at the couple. If a stocking hung on the bride or groom's nose the thrower would be the next to marry.

THE WEDDING KISSThe wedding kiss is an expression of the newlywed's faith and love. It grew out of the feudal practice of kissing the ring of a Lord of the Manor.

Traditions

WEDDING RINGSWedding rings, symbolising eternal love by their lack of beginning or end, grew out of the ancient tribal custom of using circlets of grass to decorate a bride's wrists and ankles. The Egyptians and the Romans, with their love of precious metals and jewels, initiated the practice of using silver or gold. Rings were worn on the third finger of the left hand because ancient cultures believed that finger to have a vein running straight to the heart.

CARS or CARRIAGES

GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME.

Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Daimler, Limousine or Horse and Carriage all go together with Love and Marriage...

An important part of the day's planning will revolve around your wedding transportation. Knowing you can rely on a professional chauffeur/ carriage driver will set your mind at ease and ensure you get to the

church/ venue on time. It is always a good idea to visit local wedding shows to view cars or carriages before definitely deciding on your method of transport.

THE CAR

Before you approach any companies, decide whether one car can take you, your bridesmaids and your mother to the church and on to the reception, or if a separate car is needed (remember, if the journey to the church is about 15 minutes then your bridesmaids will have to arrive at the church half an hour before you).Companies that have a good knowledge of churches and venues in the area where you wish to get married are always a good idea. they will also have a good idea as to traffic conditions on the day, which could prove to be vital.

HORSE AND CARRIAGE

An alternative to a car for your wedding transport is the ever elegant and timeless horse and carriage.

Carriages vary depending on the company you choose, Landau, Brougham, Victoria or glass Coach. Once again make appointments to go and view the carriages so you can really decide what fits your needs on the day, not forgetting that weather conditions are not reliable.

The carriage you choose may have one, two or four horse. They will have to stand for long periods of time, be surrounded by large numbers of people, and deal with traffic on the road, so it is vital you choose a company that has experience and whose horses are accustomed to being used for weddings. Finally, if you decide on a horse and carriage, remember that they will travel more slowly than a car so you will need to allow a bit of extra time.

The

DECORTheWeddingGuide.co.uk TheWeddingGuide.co.uk

DECORATION SERVICE

There are now many companies offering a complete function suite decoration service, combining the use of new and traditional materials - balloons, banners, garlands, flowers and plants.

BALLOONS

Balloons now come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be used collectively, made up as hearts, hoops, arches, entwined initials and a wide variety of other designs. They come in latex or foil, clear, pearlised or metalic and in a wide range of colours. Printed messages and even designs to match disposable tableware are also available. Ensure that you are using a professional decorator.

There are many banqueting suites and halls suitable in size and location for a Wedding Reception where the decor does not really

lend itself to the occasion. It has been, and still is, possible to improve the appearance of a room or marquee by decorating it with displays of plants, flowers and balloons.

Displays can be fixed in many ways and positioned almost anywhere, the professional will know the right materials to use to prevent damage. A bill from your banqueting suite for damage to its premises can be expensive and having your reception stopped by the Health & Safety Officer can be, to say the least, embarrassing! The professional decorator will avoid both of these eventualities.

Function room decoration is particularly well suited to enhancing the Wedding Reception. There are a number of professional organisations to which hall decorators may belong and they will be happy to identify your nearest registered decorator.

Scented ambience

An artistic florist will suggest lovely and unusual designs for your wedding bouquet and floral arrangements that compliment your dress and

ceremony venue. When you talk to your florist, be guided by the following elements: style of your dress, the theme of your wedding and the setting of your ceremony / reception.

Go to your consultation prepared, with swatches of fabric, and colours of your gown, your bridesmaids' and your groom's attire. With all this information your florist will be able to suggest to you beautiful and artistic arrangements.

Traditionally, the bridal bouquet is all white / ivory colours, but for that understated sophistication, do not worry about adding a hint of colour to your bouquet. The groom's buttonhole, worn on his left lapel, should echo the bride's bouquet, the ushers / groomsman wearing a slightly different flower on their lapel. Your attendants' flowers will also be different from your bouquet. Corsages for the mothers and buttonholes for the fathers are all co-ordinated within the general floral theme.

You may wish to select certain flowers for personal reasons, others may be chosen for tradition i.e. roses symbolise love and lilies symbolise majesty.

Finally, don't forget you will need a number of floral pieces for your wedding displays, for example: the altar in church, centre pieces for your reception tables, sprays for candlelabras and floral tokens for those special guests. The groom's buttonhole should be one of the flowers in his bride's bouquet. This is vestige of the time when a Knight would wear his Lady's colours to display his love.

CATERINGTheWeddingGuide.co.uk

Food glorious food

One idea, if the Bride's parents have a sufficiently large house and garden, is to hire an attractive marquee. Under these

circumstances, or if you are using a local hall, don't be tempted to take on the catering yourself. Everyone in the immediate bridal party will be too involved with other arrangements to want to worry about preparing food, and, if finance is the motivating factor, remember that there may be a variety of hidden costs involved in doing it yourself that you had not anticipated. You must consider using the services of a professional caterer who will also provide tables, chairs and a marquee, if required.

Remember to inform them well in advance of any special requirements and the number of vegetarian guests who will be attending. They will supply all of the necessary crockery, cutlery, table linen, glassware, waiting staff and drink requirements, although many allow you to supply your own drinks and make a small corkage charge to cover the service.

Menu prices may include rolls or French bread and butter as well as after dinner mints with coffee, but there may be 'extras' - check that you know exactly what is to be included in your agreed "per cover" price. Remember that good caterers get booked up well in advance, so early arrangements are essential. Some caterers do not ask for a deposit but payment in full is usually required before the day of the reception.

RECOMMENDATIONSIn common with all our advertisers, the caterers featured in this Wedding Guide all come highly recommended. When choosing your caterer it is always best to select one who comes recommended or whose catering you have personally experienced.

CHECK OUT THE CROCKERY

In any event, call and see them at their premises, as this will give you the opportunity to see the kind of operation they run and to discuss your requirements in detail. In addition to discussing your menu, the professional caterer will be able to advise you on the number of guests you can comfortably cater for at your chosen venue - there is nothing worse than a sit down meal which is overcrowded. Ask to see their kitchens and check out their crockery, cutlery and table linen. It is equally important to ensure that they are a Registered Caterer with the local Environmental Health Department. A good caterer will offer you a variety of hot and cold menus or buffets and yet be flexible enough to incorporate your own ideas.

Choosing the right wedding photographer can seem daunting. There are a few key things to look

for that will help you make the right choice.

THE COMFORT FACTORYou need to feel comfortable with your wedding photographer - they'll be capturing your emotions and working closely with your family and friends on your special day.

STYLESome wedding photographers favour a traditional approach with others offering more contempary images. Some photographers will be able to provide you with a combination of styles. Make sure you see examples of their relevant work to get a good feel whether they are the right choice for you.

COSTIt's important that you understand exactly what you'll be getting from your photographer. Although many now offer straight-forward packages do not be afraid to clarify exactly what your photographer will do on the day itself and provide you with after the event. Do check you know what's included in the price and what will cost extra

BOOK EARLYIt's worth arranging your photographer early in your planning as good photographers often get booked well in advance.

EXAMPLESTo form an idea of the types of photographs you want captured take a look at as many examples as you can. Discuss this with your photographer and any friends who have recently got married.

Often friends or relatives who are keen amateurs offer their services for free. Whilst it may be tempting to take them up for reasons of politeness or economy, you do not want to take risks with your precious photographs! If you want to guarantee high quality wedding photographs then you're probably best to leave the task to the professionals. To avoid causing offence to Uncle Bob, maybe you could offer him the important role of capturing candid images of the guests through the day?

MU ICThe music and entertainment for your wedding day is a reflection of your special

feelings of happiness. To make your wedding day unique, wedding ceremony ceremony music can be used and may feature soloists, instrumentals, choral or

congregational singing, a harpist, a classical guitarist, a piper or, where distances allow, even a jazz band walking in front of the wedding cars to the reception...

Contact a number of professionals who specialise in the types of entertainment you have decided upon. Attend one of their performances or rehearsals. Ascertain the number of performers and the amount of space they will need. Discuss whether you can supply lists of your families' favourite songs, or if their routine is preset. Ask about their attire and find out how often and for how long they "break". Compare costs, note whether the price is based on a flat fee or an hourly rate.

Finalise arrangements with your chosen entertainers as early as possible, as good performers are often booked up several months in advance. Two weeks before the wedding, talk to your chosen entertainers again to confirm the date, location, set-up schedule and the time performances will begin and end.

Traditionally, after a decision has been made regarding your honeymoon, the groom co-ordinates and completes the arrangements. There are a wide range of honeymoon destinations

that are popular from The Maldives to New Zealand and The Highlands of Scotland to the Far East. Some newly-weds decide on a two centered break incorporating a relaxing week with a less relaxing week, i.e. skiing. Be sure to budget out the cost of your honeymoon and make sure you know what is included and what is not included in your package.
