Neil Christopher is an educator, author, and filmmaker. He first moved to the North many years ago to help start a high school program in Resolute Bay, Nunavut. It was those students who first introduced Neil to the mythical inhabitants from Inuit traditional stories. The time spent in Resolute Bay changed the course of Neil’s life. Since that first experience in the Arctic, Nunavut has been the only place he has been able to call home. Neil has worked with many community members to record and preserve traditional Inuit stories. Together with his colleague, Louise Flaherty, and his brother, Danny Christopher, Neil started a small publishing company in Nunavut called Inhabit Media Inc., and has since been working to promote Northern stories and authors.

Germaine Arnaktauyok is an Inuit artist and illustrator, best known for her prints and etchings depicting Inuit myths and traditional ways of life. In 1999, she designed the special-edition two-dollar coin commemorating the founding of the territory of Nunavut. She is the co-author, with Gyu Oh, of My Name Is Arnaktauyok: The Life and Art of Germaine Arnaktauyok, and illustrator of several children’s books on Inuit myths. She lives in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Long ago, a curious spirit inhabited the bodies of different animals and

was known as the spirit that lived in all things. After the spirit was born as an Inuit shaman, Inuit found that they had knowledge of all the animals in the Arctic.

Celebrated artist Germaine Arnaktauyok’s stunning illustrations complement Neil Christopher’s compelling story about the journey of the spirit that lived in all things.

Nadia Sammurtok is an Inuit writer and educator originally from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. Nadia is passionate about preserving the traditional Inuit lifestyle and Inuktitut language so that they may be enjoyed by future generations. Nadia currently lives in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with her family.

Siuluk is a very strong man. He’s so strong that people tell him he must be the last of the

Tuniit, friendly giants who once lived in the North. Just like those giants, Siuluk is so strong that he can carry an entire walrus over his shoulder.

But not everyone believes that Siuluk is strong. One day, when a group of men tease Siuluk about his size, he has to find a way to prove his strength once and for all—but how?

Based on traditional stories from the Chesterfield Inlet area of the Kivalliq region of Nunavut, this tale of Siuluk and his legendary strength will captivate young readers.

In this Inuit tale, the actions of a hare and a fox change the Arctic forever by creating day and

night.

In very early times, there was no night or day and words spoken by chance could become real. When a hare and a fox meet and express their longing for light and darkness, their words are too powerful to be denied.

Passed orally from storyteller to storyteller for hundreds of years, this beautifully illustrated story weaves together elements of an origin story and a traditional animal tale, giving young readers a window into Inuit mythology.

Growing up, formal education was strongly encouraged by her grandmother, alongside traditional Inuit beliefs. After high school, Paula attended Nunavut Sivuniksavut in Ottawa. there she learned much about Inuit history and culture. She realized how important it is to connect with her culture and began to learn as much as she could after her year in the program. She returned home for a year and learned how to sew, spoke to the elders in her community, and began to feel a very strong connection to her culture. Her first book, The Legend of Lightning and Thunder, was published in 2013.

“Takannaaluk” means “the one down there”—a term used in the High Arctic to

refer to the mother of sea mammals, the most important being in Inuit mythology. This unique picture book tells how she came to be both feared and respected. As a young woman, Takannaaluk is tricked into marrying a sea bird posing as a man and then betrayed by her family. Her story is brought to vivid life by respected elder Herve Paniaq and renowned artist Germaine Arnaktauyok.

Herve Paniaq is an elder who was born around the Iglulik (Igloolik), Nunavut area. His adopted children are Melanie, Itani, Cindy, Moses, Agnes, and Catherine. He likes to record traditional stories and legends, and he likes to tell stories. When his sisters were young, Herve would grab a comic book and tell stories about what he thought the pictures were saying. His siblings who were able to read in English would come around to listen to him, and he would tell them to go away as they knew how to read in English. They enjoyed his versions better as they were more interesting. Herve is also the author of Animals Illustrated: Walrus.

About fifty species of butterflies live in the North American Arctic. Where most Arctic

animals have warm, woolly coats or thick layers of blubber, butterflies have only their fluttering, delicate wings. The hardy butterflies that live in the Arctic have had to find clever ways to keep themselves warm in cool summers and survive icy cold winters. In A Children’s Guide to Arctic Butterflies, young readers learn about twelve of the butterfly species that call the Arctic home and how they survive from one summer to the next.

With a simple layout and easy-to-follow headings for each butterfly, this beautiful book is filled with fun, useful facts, including introductory material about the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies and how they begin life as caterpillars.

Step inside and journey north—you may even spot a familiar fluttering friend!

Red PhalaropeInuktitut Name: Saurraq

The female red phalarope is slightly bigger than the male. Her dark cap, white cheeks, and bright, rusty chest and belly make her much more colourful than the male. Phalaropes have long necks, short, grey legs, lobed toes, and yellow bills tipped with black.

Where to Look: Red phalaropes nest in wet tundra along Arctic shores. They like to nest close to Arctic terns, because terns chase away the predators that come looking for eggs!

What They Eat: Phalaropes eat insects and their larvae, snails, and crustaceans, picking up food as they wade along the shore. They also spin on the surface of the water in fast, tight circles, making whirlpools that pull food up to the surface where their bills are waiting!

Listen For: The phalarope’s call can be a high “Pseet!,” a long “Sw-eet!,” or a whistling “Wit!”

Nest: Phalaropes make a small hollow lined with moss, grass, or lichen that is often hidden in the grass close to water.

Egg: A phalarope lays 4 olive-coloured eggs freckled with brown. After laying her eggs, the female phalarope leaves the male behind to care for the eggs and chicks all on his own.

Chick: The downy, cinnamon-coloured chicks hatch after 18 to 24 days and can leave the nest on their first day out of the egg to hunt for food!

During the Winter: Phalaropes change into grey-and-white feathers for the winter and fly south to the deep, warm waters of the southern Atlantic ocean, off the coasts of South America and southwest Africa.

Length: 18–20 cm Wingspan: 40–45 cm

Feathered Fact: As they migrate, phalaropes have been known to gather in flocks around grey whales and bowhead whales, feeding on the crustaceans that the whales stir up from the mud as they are feeding.

Feathers, Bills, and Feet

FeathersWhat is special about birds? Many other animals have wings, such as butterflies, bats, and bees. Other animals, like turtles, lizards, and frogs, lay eggs. But birds are the only animals on earth that are covered in feathers. Feathers keep birds warm and dry, and they allow them to escape their enemies and fly far away as the seasons change. They also help them find and attract mates. The colours and patterns of a bird’s feathers can be changed with the seasons to keep birds safely hidden. Birds change their feathers by moulting. This means that old, worn feathers are shed away and fresh new ones grow in.

BillsBills come in many shapes and sizes. The shape of a bird’s bill can tell us a lot about what it eats. Seed-eaters, insect-eaters, and fish-catchers all have uniquely shaped bills. These special shapes help them catch their favourite foods. A long, curved bill is perfect for probing in the mud for tiny animals, while a strong, heavy bill can be handy for breaking seeds. Can you guess what each of these birds might eat by the shape of its bill?

Feathered Fact: A beak or a bill? The words “beak” and “bill” are both used for birds. Other animals, such as octopuses or turtles, also have beaks, but the word “bill” is most often used for birds. A broad, strong, short bill used for tearing or striking prey, such as those found on owls or hawks, is usually called a “beak.”

Akuluk is not excited about visiting her grandparents in Nunavut. She would rather

head south for summer vacation, somewhere with roller coasters and cotton candy. There can’t be much to do way up there, Akuluk figures. But as soon as she steps off the plane and sees all the exciting animals that the tundra has to offer, Akuluk forgets all about her dreams of going south. On her first full day in Nunavut, she can’t wait to travel out on the land with her grandfather to hunt for wild eggs. As she learns about the different types of eggs, how to collect

them properly, and the delicious meals that can be prepared with them, Akuluk knows that this is just the beginning of the exciting things she’ll learn about the Arctic. Named a 2017 Silver Birch Express Award finalist.

In this third volume of In Those Days, Harper shares stories of the rise and fall of the whaling industry

in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. At the turn of the nineteenth century, whale baleen and blubber were extremely valuable commodities, and so sailors braved the treacherous Arctic waters, risking starvation, scurvy, and death, to bring home the bounty of the North. The presence of these whalemen in the North would irrevocably alter the lives of Inuit.

Along with first-hand accounts from journals and dozens of rare, historical photographs, this collection includes the myth of the Octavius—a ship that drifted for twelve years with a frozen crew—encounters between sailors and Inuit, tales of the harrowing hazing rituals suffered by first-time crewmembers, and much more.

Jon loves his life in the North. But when he feels a pain that won’t go away, he must go to a children’s hospital in the south to find out what is wrong. A doctor there tells Jon he has cancer and will have to stay at the hospital for a while.

Suddenly Jon’s life is upside down! But with a handful of tricks from the doctors and nurses, and new friends, Jon discovers ways to cope with some of the tricky parts of having cancer.

Accompanied by a resource guide for parents and caregivers, including hospital and support information, Jon’s Tricky Journey opens a conversation between Inuit children facing a cancer diagnosis and their families to help make a difficult and confusing time more manageable.

Ukaliq and Kalla Go FishingUkaliq and Kalla are two friends who could not be more different.

Ukaliq is loud, excited, and always looking for adventure. Kalla, on the other hand, is calm, quiet, and knows it’s best to be well-prepared

before travelling out on the land or sea ice.

When the two friends head out for a day of fishing, Ukaliq can barely wait to get his line in the water—but his eagerness to catch a fish

may just leave him empty-handed in the end.

There is a lot Kalla could teach Ukaliq about a successful fishing trip, if only Ukaliq would sit still long enough to listen!

Are you sure? Inuit aren't sure, and their stories have been around for a long time.

In the old days, it was easy to change shape. Animals lived like people.Their fur and feathers were like coats made of magic. But it was hard to

change colour. Sometimes, animals got bored. Everyone needs colour in life.

“The Arctic can be a dangerous place. In the winter we have extreme cold and vicious winds. The sea ice can be unpredictable. And the long nights can make life difficult. But the Arctic has other dangers that are unknown to outsiders. One of these dangers has a name—amautalik.”

The Dreaded Ogress of the Tundra introduces the world to the amautalik, one of the feared land spirits of the North. It is said that these powerful women wander the tundra looking for disobedient children and unsuspecting travellers, and carry them away on their backs. This book contains general information about these supernatural beings, as well as two spine-tingling retellings of traditional Inuit legends.

This revised and expanded edition—originally published as Stories of the Amautalik—brings the amautalik to life in even greater, creepier detail than the original.

Revised text and additional content make this new edition a must-read for young readers who are intrigued with

the dark and dreaded beings of the North!

Germaine Arnaktauyok is one of the Canadian Arctic’s most beloved Inuit artists.

Best known for her etchings and prints depicting traditional Inuit life, in Inuit Spirit she gives art lovers and colouring fans alike the opportunity to experience her work first-hand. With more than twenty line drawings depicting Inuit myths, legendary creatures, traditional lifestyle, and Arctic wildlife accompanied this book provides both an introduction to the work of a world-renowned Inuit artist, and a colouring experience like no other.

Arnaktauyok’s own colouring process—an innovative style inspired by pointillism—is also described to give readers a more complete understanding of her artistic process.

Inuit Inngiusingit: A Collection of Inuit Choral Music is a practical music educational tool centred around choral singing in Inuktitut. This performance-based songbook is perfect for classroom students (ages eight and above) and the teachers who guide them. Through active participation, students develop as expressive musicians and experience the thrill of musical and cultural discovery through artistic performance.

Inuit Inngiusingit: A Collection of Inuit Choral Music includes contemporary and traditional Inuit music from Canada’s Arctic region. Inuit pop classics from Susan Aglukark, Inuit folk music from Paul K. Irksuk, and traditional Inuit a-ja-ja songs and throat songs are a part of this collection.
