SPRING 2018 QUARTERLY REPORT

Dear Supporter, The past three months have been a whirlwind for Young Voices. We launched a new partnership with the Reason Foundation, were accepted into the State Policy Network, appointed a new member to our Board of Directors, took LibertyCon by storm, and are brainstorming for the future. I’m excited to report these developments to you. The Young Voices Award Young Voices and the Reason Foundation are excited to announce a new partnership aimed at highlighting excellent libertarian writers under 30: the Young Voices Award. A $2,500 grand prize will be given to a policy writer or journalist at the Reason Media Awards, to be held at FreedomFest in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 14th. Nominations for the award are now open on Young Voices’ website through April 6th.

Prospective candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated by others. Young Voices will select three finalists who will receive a free trip to FreedomFest to participate in the festivities. I will also be hosting a breakout panel at the conference with the three finalists on the future of journalism.

Please nominate any journalist or policy writer under 30 who exemplifies excellence in promoting libertarian values at http://youngvoicesadvocates.com/yvaward/. Young Voices is thrilled to promote the work of tomorrow’s thought leaders for freedom! State Policy Network Membership On March 8, Young Voices was admitted as an Associate Member of the State Policy Network, the American consortium of pro-liberty state think tanks and nonprofit organizations. movement of our hard work. This news come just six months after we joined the global Atlas Network in September 2017. We are pleased to have so many partners for liberty and are excited to attend the State Policy Network’s 26th Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City from October 9-12. Campus Pundit Scholarship For two years, Young Voices has offered current college students the opportunity to submit an op-ed to our staff for editing without any long-term commitment through our Campus Pundit Program. We have helped dozens of students place pro-liberty articles in college newspapers, including at top schools like Duke, Harvard, Michigan, UT-Austin, William & Mary. In January, Young Voices relaunched Campus Pundit for the spring 2018 term... with a twist! In addition to editing op-eds at no cost, Young Voices will be rewarding the top three submissions and five honorable mentions with monetary scholarships. The grand prize winner will receive $1,000. So far, we have received submissions on topics ranging from the free speech crisis on campus to defenses of the Second Amendment in light of recent short-sighted calls for gun control. We look forward to working with more students in promoting further dissenting points of view from the liberal orthodoxy on campus. You can learn more about Campus Pundit at http://youngvoicesadvocates.com/campuspundit/. New Board Member: Jared Meyer Young Voices is excited to announce the latest addition to our Board of Directors, Jared Meyer. Jared is a senior fellow at the Foundation for Government Accountability and an alumnus of Young Voices. At FGA, he researches the economic effects that various government regulations have on labor markets.

Jared is the coauthor of Disinherited: How Washington Is Betraying America’s Young and the author of How Progressive Cities Fight Innovation and Uber-Positive: Why Americans Love the Sharing Economy. Jared’s research has been published in outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, New York Post, and National Review. He has appeared on many radio and

television shows, including the BBC World Service, ABC, Fox News, and NPR. Meyer is also a member of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 for Law and Policy.

During his tenure as an Advocate from 2013-2014, Young Voices booked Jared’s first radio appearances and scheduled him to speak at several of Students For Liberty’s Regional Conferences. Jared has this to say about this appointment:

Young Voices offers aspiring writers and researchers the crucial opportunity to get their first publications and media hits. It has been exciting to watch so many talented

individuals grow their careers by utilizing Young Voices' resources. As the organization continues to adapt to better serve Advocates, we will see more voices for liberty across a wide variety of media platforms.

Young Voices at LibertyCon Young Voices spent the weekend of March 2-4 networking with hundreds of students at Students For Liberty’s LibertyCon conference in Washington, DC. Here’s what we did:

• Public Relations Manager Stephen Kent conducted mock interviews for attendees passing by Young Voices’ table in the exhibit hall, giving them a taste of the media mentorship we provide for our 50+ Advocates across the country.

• Managing Editor Liz Wolfe appeared on Students For Liberty’s “Women in Media” panel with an all-star lineup including Katherine Mangu-Ward (Reason), Mary Katharine Ham (CNN), and Kat Timpf (Fox News), giving advice to liberty lovers on how to spread the message far and wide.

• Yours truly teamed up with the American Media Council’s Pagona Stratoudakis for a session where we talked about creative ways our organizations are reaching the masses. AMC is developing public service announcements for several partners in the liberty movement like Young Voices, and we played a preview of our PSA for this first

time in public.

• Young Voices’ Advocates, staff, and friends met up for happy hour Saturday afternoon to raise a toast to liberty. As a virtual organization, it’s rare that so many of our writers are in the same room together— let alone the same city. So, it was a real treat to take a group photo.

Record Interest in Advocate Program Looking to the future, Young Voices’ staff is currently strategizing how to accommodate more writers in our Advocate program, as we are experiencing unprecedented demand. In the past 50 days alone, we’ve received 93 inquires about our program from prospective Advocates through our website. We attribute this growing interest to some major endorsements of our work we’ve received lately — specifically shout-outs from Glenn Beck on radio and Sen. Rand Paul on Twitter. Last year, we received 110 applications to our program and, judging by these recent developments, we are expecting an even higher number this year. Applications will open in June and run through August. Ultimately, the high demand for our programs is a good “problem” to have, and we look forward to solving it by expanding our media outreach in the coming months. This growth is all thanks to supporters like yourself. Thank you for your investment in the next generation of pro-liberty writers. Together, we will make liberty mainstream!

Sincerely,

Casey Given Executive Director Young Voices 571-289-8904 [email protected]
