D r. Stuart Higginbotham at Grace Episcopal recently talked to his parishioners about the role of mindfulness in the life and growth of the church. As I listened, his message resonated as having many similarities to BULLI. I asked Dr. Higginbotham if I could adapt some of his thoughts to convey to you through the BULLI lens, and he most graciously agreed. BULLI, like every organization, is constantly moving. Whether it moves forward or backward is the question that the BULLI Board and committees, as well as your director, often think about. Every year, a handful of volunteers has worked hard to maintain the BULLI model and live out the member-led, member-driven philosophy. We have enjoyed 23 years of lifelong learning opportunities at Brenau University. In those years we have thrived and grown as an organization, while hopefully you have thrived and grown as an individual. However, as new in-house adult community programs come along, as the Brenau pool and fitness center is no longer one of the very few exercise venues in town and as original members step aside because of health-related limitations, BULLI enrollment has suffered. Over 20 years ago, a group of Hall County residents gathered in the Wilson Room of the John W. Jacobs Building to talk about the idea of a lifelong learning program at Brenau. The group included local

visionaries and business leaders, lifelong Gainesville residents and individuals who were new to the area.

Some of the attendees had visited lifelong learning programs in other places. Others had attended Elderhostel programs throughout the country and had experienced firsthand the benefits of lifelong learning. All of them, however, were dedicated to the idea of creating a unique opportunity for learning on the Brenau University campus.

From their dedication, BULLI was born.

MONDAYLine Dancing

10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

It’s time to shake a leg! Dance has proven to be one of the best exercises you can do to age successfully. Come learn the steps to some of the most popular line dances, such as the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle and the Wagon Wheel. We will even learn the Macarena. No partner is needed; you’ll make some new friends as you dance to the music!

Cheryl Vassiliadis is the co-author

of “Creative Aging: a Baby Boomer’s

guide to Successful Living.” She has

a BA in Journalism and wrote for the

Daytona Beach News Journal. Cheryl

currently teaches both dance and Tai

Chi classes for adults from 60-95. She also teaches a monthly Creative Dancing class at the Gainesville Senior Center.

Marvelous Musical Prodigies

1 – 2:30 p.m.

What must it be like to start composing music at age 2 and create an opera by age 10 as Samuel Barber did? What was it like to be in Salzburg when little Mozart was writing music and performing for kings at age 4 and writing a symphony by 8? What went through the mind of Paganini’s father when he handed his 5-year-old Niccolo his mandolin and watched the child play any melody he heard?

Is it possible that another “Mozart” was born in England in 2005, when

young Alma Deutscher started playing

the piano at 2, the violin at 3 and

writing arias at 4? Who knew that a

slight 6-year-old boy born in Paris to

Chinese parents, playing Bach’s Cello

Suite No. 1 at the University of Paris

concert would later become known to

the world as Yo-Yo Ma? We’ll look at

these and other prodigies: their lives,

their music and their contributions to

the musical world in this class about

perilous journeys and remarkable lives.

Steve Coldiron holds a Master of

Church Music in voice and music

theory. He has done additional work

from Westminster Choir College

in Princeton, N.J. He is presently

associate minister of music, First

Baptist Church, Gainesville. Steve has

taught several courses for BULLI.

s c h e d u l e

Perhaps it is time to discuss BULLI in a new way. What if we were to take a mindful approach to grow and sustain our program? Our current approach focuses on a program maintenance model. According to Dr. Higginbotham, anxiety and stress surrounding this model come from wanting to find

people to fill spots of leadership and from making sure programming continues and that we have enough people to make the program work. The true picture of the health and vitality of the program is held only by a few people in leadership positions.

With a mindful approach, there is a shift. Leadership becomes a shared responsibility by all of the members of the community. Ownership,

participation and community awareness by all members become the keys to a successful program. Isn’t this what the concept of “member-driven” should be?

Sustainability and growth should be called forth from the entire BULLI community, and not be solely the responsibility of those at the top. The responsibility for success should be placed where it belongs – with all of us, for WE are BULLI.

TUESDAYWhile We’re on the Subject – Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and Long-Term Care

1 – 2:30 p.m.

As you may know, these four older

adult programs are interconnected

and controlled by the government.

How you manage your participation in these programs correctly isn’t always clear, so we will explain the ins and outs, all the rules and all the strategies to use the programs to your best advantage. Many decisions you make are permanent, but some can be changed during certain times of the year or at certain ages. Do you know when those are? This course may be especially helpful to those who fall in the “sandwich generation” taking care of their parents and your children and grandchildren.

Craig Lewis is a certified financial

planner who holds various licenses

in the investment field. For the past

five years, Mr. Lewis has been active

in the school system retirement

plan business, developing and

implementing investor education. He

is certified in Medicare and has taught

previously for BULLI, as well as for

the continuing education programs

for Pickens Tech and the University of

North Georgia.

Wine Without Pretense

2:45 – 4:15 p.m.

This course is a potpourri of wine explorations. Among the class offerings will be Wines of Portugal; Red Wines – Anything but Cabernet Sauvignon; White Wines – Anything but Chardonnay; Aged in Cardboard – a serious look at boxed wines and a surprise class. Randall Murray has been writing

about wine for nearly 35 years

in newspapers and magazines in

Pennsylvania, Florida and Georgia.

For about 10 years, his columns

were syndicated nationally. He

created his first wine education

course around 1986 and christened

it, “Wine without Pretense,” which

reflects his casual attitude toward

the subject.

This unique interactive course will examine these developments and how each has contributed to the other. Two excellent, highly acclaimed books by Siddhartha Mukherjee, The Gene: An Intimate History and The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, will provide the basis of the course; however, their purchase is not required.

World War I in the Middle East

2:45 – 4:15 p.m.

This history class will examine World War I, focusing specifically on the Middle Eastern theater of conflict. Over the six weeks, the class will consider the wide range of fronts that characterized the struggle across the region from the Sinai Peninsula in the south to the

Caucasus Mountains in the north, from the Straits of the Dardanelles in the west to the Persian Gulf in the east. The Middle East was impacted tremendously by the war in terms of the great stresses that it put on the regional populations and their societies, forcing many to endure food shortages, economic despair and involuntary relocations. The legacy of the war continued decades after the fighting ended as the victorious powers approved plans to partition the defeated Ottoman Empire and created a range of new emerging nation-states. All of these aspects will be explored, giving you an opportunity to broaden and deepen your understanding of the conflict and its enduring legacies.

Dr. Jonas Kauffeldt is an assistant professor of history at the University of North Georgia’s Gainesville campus. He earned his Ph.D. from Florida State University in 2006 and specializes in the history of the modern Middle East.
